Arnold Toynbee

Post-modern theology is highly suspicious of social theory and its secular origins. After all, the founder who gave us the word “sociology” also coined the term “positivism.” An alternative strategy is that of Bernard Lonergan, a theologian with a highly developed sociological imagination. He was quite aware of the secularity but devoted a life-time in trying to think through some of the key issues. His was a mind on the move and perhaps it is not surprising that his contribution has yet to be assimilated.
In this paper I shall take a look at a key text from Lonergan’s magnum opus, Insight. I will suggest that, in a sense, this may be regarded as “social physics” (another phrase from Auguste Comte). As we shall see, Lonergan’s thought wrestled with many issues of concern to the other founders of sociology: Karl Marx, Émile Durkheim, and Max Weber, but his vision is quite original, and in fact, he will draw on Arnold J. Toynbee.
I do not believe Lonergan’s work is beyond criticism—as his later developments suggest—so I will try to identify some difficulties by examining closely some of those later changes. Before offering my appraisal, then, I will look at Lonergan’s social theory from five periods. First, I shall simply record his interest in the 1930s by referring to some work he retained in a file but never published. Then I shall give a more careful exposition of a chapter written in the early 1950s. I will suggest that Lonergan’s deployment of mathematical analogies to understand social theory underwent some changes and so I will look at that transition in the 1960s. I will then be able to take a glance at the new way Lonergan presented his ideas in Method in Theology (1972) and go on to sample a few developments in the last decade up to 1980. In my appraisal we will be able to see some of the strengths and weaknesses Lonergan encountered in his project of social physics and perhaps make a small increase to the stock of ideas myself.

In januari 1948 debatteerden twee historici in een radiostudio van de BBC over het vak en de ‘catastrofe’ die de wereld was overkomen. De ene historicus was de Britse oudhistoricus Arnold J. Toynbee, de andere was de Nederlandse vroegmodernist Pieter Geyl. Beiden traden in deze jaren naar voren als gezaghebbende public intellectuals. Het debat dat na 1948 uitgroeide tot een intense woordenstrijd illustreert hoe verschillend beide historici hun rol in de postwar en post-Holocaust wereld opvatten. Toynbee schrok er niet voor terug om over de grenzen van zijn specialistische kennis heen het grote publiek in politieke en morele zin voor te lichten, Geyl zag een meer afgebakende rol voor de geschiedschrijving weggelegd. In dit artikel komen deze twee opvattingen aan bod via een ontleding van een debat dat fundamentele vragen opriep over collectieve en individuele verantwoordelijkheid en schuld.

Döngüsel tarih, tarihsel olguların sistemli ve periyodik bir şekilde kendini tekrar
etmesidir. Döngüsel tarih anlayışı, bilimsel anlamda İbn-i Haldun ile başlamıştır. Oswald Spengler, bu anlayış için yeni bir model kurmuş ve bu modeli sınıflandırmıştır. Arnold Toynbee de Spengler’ın modelindeki döngü yılını artırarak kendi modelini oluşturmuştur. Pitirim Sorokin ise hem modelin coğrafyasını genişletmiş hem de iki model üzerine eleştirilerde bulunmuştur. Çalışmanın amacı bu modelleri geliştirmek ve yeni bir model kurmaktır. Çalışmanın kapsamı siyasi, iktisadi, diplomatik, sosyal sistemler çerçevesinde genel dünya tarihidir. Eski çağlardan günümüze kadar yaşanan tarihsel olgular ve uygarlıkların benzerlikleri esas konudur. Çalışmada, Dünya tarihinin değişken bir coğrafya içerisinde yaklaşık 2350 yıllık bir devirle kendisini tekrar ettiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Bu tekrar toplumların kültürel değerlerinden ziyade uygarlıkların iktisadi, sosyal ve politik yapıları üzerinde şekillenmiştir. Kurulan modele göre ele alınacak ilk periyot M.Ö. 2350 yılından M.S. 1 yılına kadardır. İkinci periyot ise M.S. 1 yılı itibariyle başlamıştır. Coğrafya olarak ikinci periyottaki Orta ve Batı Avrupa, ilk periyotta Mora yarımadasının ve Güney Ege havzasının karşılığı olmuştur. Buna göre ikinci periyottaki Güney Avrupa ilk periyottaki Girit’i, Doğu Avrupa da Fırat nehrine kadar olan Güney Anadolu bölgesini yansıtmıştır. Orta Doğu’nun ilk periyottaki karşılığı ise Levant ve Aşağı Mısır bölgesidir. Orta Asya ise Kuzey Suriye ve Kuzey Mezopotamya’nın, Çin de Güney Mezopotamya’nın yansıması olmuştur. Dünya’nın yuvarlak olması sebebiyle coğrafi keşiflerden sonra her iki periyot içinde ilk periyottaki Sicilya ve Güney İtalya’nın karşılığı, Pasifik Okyanusu olmuştur. Sonuç olarak ilk periyotta Luvi ve Hurri istilaları Kavimler Göçü ile ilişkilendirilmiştir. Feodalitenin yaşandığı ve Yunan ortaçağı olarak adlandırılan dönem ile Avrupa ortaçağı eşleştirilmiştir. Hiksos fetihleri ile Arap fetihleri arasında benzerlikler kurulmuştur. Ege göçleri Haçlı seferleriyle, Arami göçleri Türk göçleriyle, Asur fetihleri de Moğol fetihleriyle ilişkilendirilmiştir. Yunan kolonileşmesi ile Avrupa’nın sömürge hareketleri arasında bağlantılar kurulmuş, Yunan şehir devletlerinin gelişmesi ile Avrupa devletlerinin gelişmesi aynı çerçevede değerlendirilmiş, Peloponnez savaşları ile Dünya savaşları arasında ise büyük benzerlikler kurulmuştur. Son olarak Makedon işgalleri ile Nato faaliyetleri ilişkilendirilmiştir. Kurulan model birçok tarihi olay ile örneklendirilerek detaylandırılmıştır. Dünya’nın yuvarlak olması sonucu ilk periyottaki bazı tarihi olaylar, 1450 yılından sonra Doğu Asya’da tekerrür etmemiş, bu da tekrarlarda sapmaların yaşanmadığı Avrupa merkezli tarih anlayışıyla paralel “etkileşim alanı” kavramını doğurmuştur. Etkileşim alanı, ayrıca iktisadi olarak incelenmiş ve bu alanın, zıtların birliği ilkesiyle hareket eden bir sistem olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Her iki periyotta da etkileşim alanı, sırasıyla globalizm, tersine kolonileşme, feodalizm, kolonileşme, bütünleşme ve yıkım çağlarını yaşamıştır.

Yaklaşık iki yüzyıldır köklü bir medeniyet buhranı ile karşı karşıyayız.  Sarsıcı olan bu buhran hala varlığını devam ettirirken yaşananları daha iyi anlamak için evrensel ölçekte medeniyet teorilerini irdelemeye ihtiyaç vardır. Bu çalışmada tarihsel gelişimin evrensel yasalara uygun olarak gerçekleştiğini göstermeyi hedefleyen İngiliz tarihçi ve düşünür Henry Thomas Buckle’ın (1821-1862) “İngiltere’de Medeniyet Tarihi” adlı eseri özelinde medeniyet teorisi incelenmektedir. Bu çalışmamızda tarihi bir bilim haline getirme girişiminde bulunan Buckle’ın medeniyet teorisinin yanısıra İbn Haldun, Norbert Elias, Arnold J. Toynbee, Ebu'l-Hasan Habib el-Maverdi, François Guizot ve John Searl’ün medeniyet teorilerine de karşılaştırmalı bir perspektifle yer verilmektedir. Bu çalışma ile ulaşmaya çalıştığımız husus, medeniyet teorilerini “iyi”, “kötü”, “başarılı” veya “başarısız” olarak tanımlamaktan ziyade bir medeniyet teorisinin doğuşu, gelişimi ve tekamül sürecini anlamaya çalışmak, evrensel ölçekte kapsayıcı bir medeniyet tasavvuru sunup sunmadıklarını çok yönlü bir şekilde irdelemektir.

The history of international thought has been one of the most significant developments within International Relations (IR) during the past twenty years. Scholars have transformed the canonical understanding of the discipline, presenting a much more accurate account of its origins, consolidation and evolution. This essay focuses on a controversial author as Arnold J. Toynbee (1889-1975). Indeed, he was an heterodox historian who has also offered innovative but eccentric interpretations in the field of IR. This essay examines the tangled up relationship between history and international relations in Toynbee’s works in order to underline his limits and describe his legacy.

El colapso de la Unión Soviética y la intensificación del proceso de globalización, entendido éste como la profundización de las relaciones entre los Estados, así como el surgimiento de nuevos entes no-estatales con influencia en el ámbito de la política y de la economía, a veces mayores que los Estados, marcaron el fin del mundo bipolar de la Guerra Fría. Los nuevos protagonistas están constituidos por organizaciones internacionales, no gubernamentales y de entidades transnacionales como empresas, organizaciones mediáticas, grupos religiosos, organizaciones terroristas o criminales, así como entidades subnacionales, todos interactuando simultáneamente, para encontrar sus propios fines.

L’Europa sembra in crisi ma non ogni crisi è anche un declino inevitabile. Al fine di comprendere se il genio europeo od occidentale abbia un futuro è necessario descrivere la genesi e lo sviluppo storici di questo improprio “continente culturale”, rinvenendo la tipicità di tale genio, e osservare quale sia lo stato di salute di cui esso ancora possa godere attualmente: pur lontani da ogni pessimismo, i dati non sembrano incoraggiare l’analista, alla luce dell’impoverimento filosofico che affligge la cultura europeo-occidentale. L’unica via d’uscita sarebbe il recupero ermeneutico della tradizione filosofico-politica che ha caratterizzato tale cultura, di cui oggi sembra essersi smarrita la memoria, ma v’è da capire se e quando un tale recupero sarà possibile.

Ortega (1883-1955), Modern Tema (1923), Kitlelerin Ayaklanması (1929), Üniversitenin Misyonu(1930), Sistem Olarak Tarih (1935), Tarihsel Akıl (1940/1944) ve vefatından sonra yayımlanan Evrensel Tarihin Yorumu (1959) adlı temel eserlerinde tarih, tarihçilik mesleğine ve tarih eğitimine ilişkin görüşlerini yer yer paylaşmıştır. Öte yandan diğer yazılarında da tarih ve tarihçilere ilişkin görüşlerine kısmen değinmiştir.
Bu çalışmada birinci ve ikinci elden kaynaklardan yararlanarak Ortega’nın tarih ve tarihçilik üzerine görüşlerini aktardıktan sonra tarih eğitimi için ne gibi çıkarımlarda bulunulabilir? sorusuna cevap vermeye çalışacağım.
Ceplecha (1958) Amerika Katolik Üniversitesinde hazırladığı José Ortega y Gasset’in Tarihsel Düşüncesi (The Historical Thought of José Ortega y Gasset) adlı doktora tezinde temelde konuyu iki bölüm hâlinde işlemektedir. Bunlar, Ortega’nın tarih kavramı ve tarihsel değişim sürecidir. Ceplecha İspanyolcasının da verdiği avantajla Ortega’nın gazete ve dergi gibi süreli yayınlarına da atıf yapmaktadır. Ben ise, konuyu Türkçeye çevrilen ve yukarıda sözünü ettiğim temel eserleri ve diğer kısa yazılarını öncelik-sonralık ilişkisine dikkat ederek ele alacağım.

The friendship between Arnold J. Toynbee and Martin Wight is often noted but rarely fully explored. This article examines their personal and intellectual relationship and assesses the influence of Toynbee's work on Wight's thought, with particular concentration on their views of the past and historical method. It argues that Toynbee offered a 'challenge' to which much of Wight's work may be considered a 'response', some of it critical, and some of it sympathetic. It suggests that Toynbee's influence on Wight was greater and more lasting than is often recognized in International Relations, and concludes by addressing the nature of that legacy in Wight's international thought.

Seit Herodot und Thukydides gilt die Annahme, daß die historischen Strukturen der Vergangenheit früher oder später auch in Gegenwart und Zukunft wiederkehren, als methodologische Grundlage allen echten geschichtsphilosophischen Argumentierens und als ultimative gesellschaftliche Selbstbegründung der historischen Disziplinen. Unter den verschiedenen diesbezüglichen Denkschulen, welche sich in der Antike und im Abendland herausgebildet haben, war die Vermutung, politische oder kulturelle Einheiten könnten sich analog zum Lebenszyklus natürlicher Körper verhalten und biologistische bzw. zyklische Etappen wie Geburt, Wachstum, Reife, Alter und Tod bzw. Neubeginn erleben, ganz besonders wirkmächtig und prägt auch heute noch unter dem Schlagwort vom "Aufstieg und Niedergang" der großen Hochkulturen unser Verständnis von den notwendigen Etappen einer jeden Zivilisation. Vorliegender Band beinhaltet, neben einer breiten methodologischen Einführung in das Thema, ausgewählte Beiträge zu zyklischen und biologistischen Denkstrukturen in der Geschichtsphilosophie so unterschiedlichen Denker wie Platon, Aristoteles, Polybios, Sallust, Vergil, Livius, Seneca, Orosius, Simplikios, Proklos, Joachim von Fiore, Machiavelli, Vico, Kant, Hegel, Spengler, Thomas Mann, Toynbee, Huntington und Fukuyama.

Öz Nüfus cüzdanında belirtilenden çok daha fazlasını ifade eden ve içinde bir çok öğe barındıran kimlik için " beni başka hiç kimseye benzemez yapan şeydir " diyen Amin Maalouf, Ölümcül Kimlikler isimli bu çalışmasında kimlik ve aidiyet ilişkisini ve bu kavramlar ekseninde yaşanan sorunları etkileyici bir anlatımla gözler önüne sermektedir. Tek bir aidiyeti ön plana alarak kimlik tanımlaması içine girilmesinin yanlışlığını vurgulayan Maalouf, insanların bir çok aidiyetten oluşan tek bir kimliği olduğunu belirtmektedir. Bu noktada ise insanların hem kendi hem de karşısındakilerin aidiyetlerini kabul edip, saygı göstermeleri gerekliliğinin altı çizilmektedir. Özünde kimlik ve aidiyet ilişkisini sorunsallaştıran Maalouf'un bu eserine nesnel bir perpsektifle yaklaşılarak, eserde yer alan önemli fikirler, kavramlar, yazarın argümanları, örneklemeleri ve çalışmanın anlatı düzeni gibi hususlar analiz edilmektedir. He reveals the relationship of identity and belonging, the problems related to them with the impressive discourse in this work called " Fatal Identities ". He emphasizes the description of identity in a single belonging is a mistake and explains that people have one identity

Oswald Spengler was a German historian of the last century who preceded Arnold Toynbee with the idea of analysing major civilizations to extract a general theory of history. The story of the eight High Cultures is that of societies that ultimately fail. Cultures eventually die, but produce fossils, canons of art and science and political forms. The period of fossilization, after the end of the culture proper, is what Spengler calls " Civilization " , which he said began for the West at the end of the 18th century. The work of modernity is the completion of the final forms. Spengler expected society to collapse or stagnate by 2200 AD, and maybe the recent robbery of the world's finances by the bankers is another sign of it. Spengler was the first philosopher of world history to write about the other great civilizations not as a mere prologue to Western history.

Arnold J. Toynbee was not only a controversial historian, but also a beguiling internationalist. This article analyses Toynbee as an observer of international politics. In particular, it examines both his understanding of contemporary foreign politics and his constant search of a stable world order. From the idealism of his youth to the utopianism of religious origin that marked his final years, passing through his partial and temporary disenchantment with regard to his youthful expectations, this essay will follow Toynbee’s path in the study of the international affairs of the Twentieth century.

Dagli anni Cinquanta del secolo scorso, il grande storico inglese Arnold J. Toynbee (1889- 1975) è stato spesso additato dai suoi critici come una sorta di profeta visionario. Nel suo sforzo poderoso e originale di costruire una macro-teoria delle trasformazioni politiche e internazionali, Toynbee ripercorre infatti vicende millenarie e vastissimi spazi geografici, così da poter disseppellire quelle fondamentali tendenze che contrassegnano il succedersi dei popoli e delle civiltà sulla ribalta della storia. A più di tre decadi di distanza dalla morte di Toynbee, tuttavia, le dinamiche della politica mondiale dopo la fine della Guerra fredda sembrano ridare attrattiva all’impresa teorica dello storico inglese e al suo tentativo di delineare un modello esplicativo generale del ciclo vitale delle civiltà. Toynbee e la sua opera acquistano allora una luce nuova e attuale. E da profeta, che molti suoi contemporanei giudicavano visionario, si trasforma in uno studioso che ha saputo leggere e interpretare in anticipo i più importanti mutamenti dell’ordine internazionale. Lo storico delle civiltà propone infatti uno ‘sguardo’ in grado di abbracciare l’ampio insieme dei processi politici in atto, collocandoli sulla linea del loro possibile (e forse assai probabile) orizzonte futuro. Uno ‘sguardo’ che risulta capace di oltrepassare la scorza più superficiale dei molteplici cambiamenti che stiamo vivendo.

The barbarians are the bugbear of the classicist. Because they rejected Christendom they are like the fool Othello, the “base Indian who threw away the pearl.” Lonergan shares the concern with the Christian civilization, but what to do? On the publication of Quadragesimo anno he had written “what Plato longed for, the liberal threw away,” and, with more foresight than insight, perhaps, suggested that eventually the villain of the peace, the so-called sovereign state, would be “liquidated.” Strange then, that, save for one isolated citation of Tertullian, Lonergan’s corpus never mentions the sovereign state, not for forty years, not until the final chapter of Method in Theology.

This paper argues that some tenets of thought by British historian Arnold Toynbee live on and may be applicable to generate insight into modern social phenomena in Europe. As “civilization” framed as a mode of analysis regains popularity, Toynbee’s insight into some historical processes calls for re-examination. This article claims that a set of Toynbee’s concepts related to “disintegration” of a civilization (“internal proletariat,” “universal state,” “religion as chrysalis”) may be applied to generate an interpretation of religious and demographical processes that take place in Europe. The article first identifies European Union as an “universal state” and some groups within European Muslim community as “internal proletariat.” It then goes on to analyse the logical consequences of Toynbee’s assumption that Christianity and Islam are the carriers (chrysalides) of, respectively, Western and Islamic civilizations. In accordance with Toynbee’s model of civilizational evolution (summarized in the article) there are at least six or seven logically possible outcomes of an ongoing interaction between the Western and Islamic civilizations on the territory of the EU. Both civilizations may succeed in the competition for European souls.

La presentación de este estudio histórico invita a reflexionar sobre la Filosofía y Metodología Científica en él aplicadas. Diremos primeramente que el trabajo realizado se sustenta en una profunda concepción universalista de la Historia, cuyo más genuino representante es el eminente historiador recientemente fallecido Arnold Toynbee. Concebir la Historia universalmente significa dar una real magnitud a todos los seres humanos que vivieron o viven en el planeta, con sus penas, alegrías, ilusiones, necesidades, etc., gente como cualquiera de nosotros que ocupó un lugar en el marco cultural de su tiempo y actuó en un escenario geográfico determinado.

The historical continuity of Chinese culture from the early dynasties to modern times is a common topic in Chinese ‘culturalist discourses’. The intellectuals who wanted to defend the legitimacy of a Chinese culture compatible with modernity almost never put it into question. Zhang Junmai (1887–1969), in a short book entitled the Chinese culture of tomorrow (1936) had the same attitude toward the problem. He spoke about the ‘four thousand years of Chinese civilization’. However, taking this stand is not without raising issues, for Zhang begins his text by building his theory of cultures upon many ideas defended by Arnold Toynbee, in his major work A study of History (1931). As a matter of fact, Toynbee used to divide the history of China into two periods: the Sinic society, and the Far Eastern society. In introducing Toynbee’s studies in China, did Zhang purposely change important aspects of the Study or was he simply lost in translation? Incidentally, was quoting Toynbee simply instrumental in Zhang’s discourse? These are the main questions this research note aims at tackling
