CD atau compact disc adalah sebuah piringan bundar yang terbuat dari logam atau plastik berlapis bahan yang dapat dialiri listrik, sehingga bersifat magnet. CD juga menyimpan data, data direkam di atasnya, kemudian dibaca dari disk dengan menggunakan kumparan pengonduksi yang dinamakan head. Selama proses pembacaan, head tidak bergerak sama sekali. Sedangkan piringan disk bergerak di bawahnya. CD ini bisa menyimpan 783 MB informasi audio pada salah satu sisinya.

Background Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease, characterized by dysregulated T cell immune response.. Objective To investigate the Tim-3 surface expression on peripheral blood CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in RA patients concerning disease activity. Tässä etnomusikologian pro gradu -tutkielmassa käsitellään kulttuurihistoriallisesta näkökulmasta CD-teknologian alkuvaiheita Suomessa vuosina 1983–1989. Tutkimus kuuluu musiikintutkimuksen äänitetutkimuksen haaraan. CD-teknologian esiinmarssia tarkastellaan formaattisodan käsitteen kautta. Formaattisodalla tarkoitetaan ääniteformaattien välistä kilpailua.

Tutkimuksessa käytetty aineisto on hyvin laaja. Se koostuu kolmesta eri tietokannasta (Suomen kansallisdiskografia, Yleisradion äänilevystön tietokanta sekä Suomen äänitearkisto Ry:n tietokanta) löytyvistä julkaisutiedoista, Hifi-lehden vuosikerroista 1979–1989, tutkimushaastatteluista, Musiikkituottajat – IFPI Ry:n kokoamista tilastoista sekä teknologiayhtiö Philipsin sisäisistä tiedotteista.

Vaikka CD-soittimet ja -levyt tulivat Suomessa myyntiin ensimmäisten maiden joukossa jo vuonna 1983, CD-teknologia yleistyi Suomessa hitaasti verrattuna esimerkiksi Yhdysvaltoihin, Japaniin tai muihin Pohjoismaihin. Syynä tähän olivat erityisesti Suomessa vallinnut vahva kasetti- ja kopiointikulttuuri sekä pienet markkinat. Ensimmäinen suomalainen CD-levy julkaistiin vuonna 1985. Vuoteen 1989 mennessä CD-julkaisusta oli tullut arkipäivää monille suomalaisille levy-yhtiöille, vaikka CD-levyjen myyntimäärä ei vielä ollut lähelläkään C-kasettien tai LP-levyjen myyntimääriä.

Valtaosa Suomessa 1980-luvun aikana julkaistuista kotimaisista CD-levyistä oli kevyttä musiikkia. Ensimmäisinä vuosina julkaistiin enemmän uutta musiikkia, mutta 1980-luvun loppuun mennessä aiemmin muissa formaateissa julkaistun, eli niin kutsutun backkatalogimateriaalin osuus kasvoi kuitenkin noin puoleen kaikista vuosittain julkaistuista kotimaisista CD-nimikkeistä.

CD-teknologian läpimurto onnistui monesta syystä. Uuden teknologian lanseeraaminen tuotti taloudellista voittoa niin laitevalmistajille kuin äänitteitä julkaisseille levy-yhtiöillekin. Kuluttajat antoivat arvoa CD-järjestelmän helppokäyttöisyydelle, kestävyydelle sekä CD:n aiempiin tekniikoihin verrattuna paremmalle äänenlaadulle. Myös radioasemien kannalta CD-järjestelmä oli helppokäyttöinen, joskin ne siirtyivät CD-aikaan vasta 1990-luvulla. Artistien kannalta CD oli tapa luoda edistyksellistä imagoa.

CD-teknologialla oli merkittävä rooli musiikin digitaalisessa vallankumouksessa. CD:n merkitys eräänlaisena välivaiheena äänilevyn ja äänitiedoston välillä on kiistaton. CD-levylle musiikki muutettiin biteiksi, mikä loi pohjan nykyiselle tietokoneistuneelle musiikkikulttuurille.

Decreasing the measurable concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in the water of the experimental systems containing Ceratophyllum demersum: The phytoremediation potential // Doklady Biological Sciences, 2009 (October), vol. 428, no. 1, p. 444-447. Finding: aquatic plants C. demersum induced a removal of the heavy metals Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb from water. Abstract: Changes in the concentrations of the four heavy metals in the water of experimental systems were studied. Using the method of inversion voltamperometry, the concentrations of the heavy metals Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb were measured in the water of the experimental microcosms. Aquatic macrophytes Ceratophyllum demersum were incubated in the microcosms. The measured concentrations of all four heavy metals decreased in the microcosms with the macrophytes much faster than in the control microcosms without any aquatic plants. The new results complement the previous data on the phytoremediation potential of aquatic plants.  The new facts proved that  Ceratophyllum demersum  is a potent tool to clean water and to remove heavy metals. This is the first time the phytoremediation potential (for the mixture of metals) of this wide-spread species  was discovered. The plant removed the toxic metals cadmium, lead, copper, zink (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn) from water with great efficiency. As a result, water quality improved dramatically with a prospect of new technology.

Optical disk (OD) and drive (ODD) are important interfaces used for recording digital streams of bits that represent multimedia with analog nature or discrete data. Enhancing the ODDs in terms of reading/writing (operation) speed is vital as multi-layer (ML) ODs with high capacities are available in the market. This paper presents a simple strategy to enhance operation speed in ODDs by multi optical pickup unit (MOPU) 1 that leads to surprisingly higher transfer rates. The main considerations with different working modes plus theoretical and physical upper bounds are studied. To keep compatibility, the MOPU method is independent of the OD types or optical lens (OL) designs and based on the ODD hardware placement, so all ODs will be also readable at higher rates. Paper also discusses improvements achieved in experimental results based on prototypes.
