Canada (Nationalism And State Building)

La présente étude a pour but d'expliquer la nature et l'orientation du débat actuel sur la mise en histoire du passé du Canada. Pour ce faire, de nombreux documents (livres, articles de périodiques et de journaux, actes de colloques, etc.) ont été analysés. Notre mémoire présente les origines de ce débat dans les années 1990 et propose une vue d'ensemble des principaux arguments que défendent les historiens et autres intellectuels canadiens qui y participent. Cette démarche nous permet de faire ressortir la multiplicité des éléments de tension et de division qui structurent le discours sur l'histoire du Canada. Dans un premier temps, nous exposons la perspective des historiens des régions. Par la suite, nous abordons le débat par l'entremise des historiens du national et des historiens du social. Enfin, un dernier chapitre est consacré au cas particulier du Québec, (mi)lieu où le débat n'a pas les mêmes résonances. Globalement, nous analysons le contenu de l'histoire nationale, régionale et sociale, mais aussi l'espace accaparé ces domaines dans la trame de l'aventure historique canadienne.

The immediate post-war period was defined by shifts in capitalism's socioeconomic and institutional underpinnings. Commonly known as Fordism, until the early-1970s models of standardized industrial mass-production and robust state planning and intervention were relatively successful in maintaining secular growth in employment, productivity and demand as well as establishing the national economy and society as unified, governable fields. This paper considers how migration controls in Canada and Australia enhanced and extended such arrangements. In simultaneously boosting production and demand, diversifying and integrating industrial activities and assimilating European migrants into a mass consumer culture while excluding non-Europeans perceived as disruptive of material and sociocultural homogeneity, such policies provided central vectors of economic and cultural nationalism that complemented other monopolistic and redistributive interventions.

The aim of this paper is to explore French Canadian (Québec) students‘ historical consciousness of the nation through the lens of Social Identity Theory (SIT). Relying on a sample of 142 Québec‘s historical narratives written by Francophone Québécois students, the paper revisits findings from a previous study on the historical consciousness of young Québécois. Informed by SIT principles, our narrative analysis shows how most Franco-Québécois categorize the past in homogenous categories (e.g., the imperialist Anglophone; the surviving Francophone) and frame their stories into particular modes of present-day orientations. Implications of this study for history education are also discussed.

Canada has been a haven for refuge seekers from around the world for many years because of its relatively generous immigration rules. For that reason, in 1986, the people of Canada were awarded the Nansen Refugee Award by UNHCR for helping refugees integrate successfully into Canadian society. However, there appear to be discriminatory tendencies in its immigration policies, which in the past were based on race. This contribution delves into the differential treatment of immigrants from the global south compared to the preferential treatment of English speaking Caucasians from Europe and Oceania. The question that arises at this juncture is why, given all the accolades heaped on Canada, do discriminatory laws and practices persist in the assessment of non-European immigrants‘ credentials.

Much has been said about the Harper government’s decision to restore certain symbols of the monarchy and to tie them anew to the emblematic figure of Canada. Its decision to transform the War of 1812 into a decisive event in the creation of the country has also been contested. In Quebec, as well as the rest of Canada, many pundits are resisting what they have called a step backward in the production of national symbols and a hijacking of the past for political purposes in the present. How should we interpret the Prime Minister’s actions?

This paper explores the origins and productions of the Société Canadienne d’Opérette et d’Opéra de Montréal, a short-lived opera company that was active in the late 1870s. Headed by Calixa Lavallée and Frantz Jehin Prume, the SCOOM was established as a result of a decree issue in the early months of 1877 forbidding the use mixed choirs throughout the archdiocese, and consequently making obsolete Lavallée’s choir at Saint-Jacques Church. Following the success of their first production, Lavallée and Prume realized that the company might be used as a stepping stone to the creation of a government-funded music school, modelled on the Paris Conservatoire. This paper explores the social and political context in which the SCOOM was created, and details the staging and reception of its productions of Gounod’s Jeanne d’Arc and Boieldieu’s La Dame blanche. In selecting these works for performance, the organizers responded to demands and constraints of a society accustomed to popular entertainment from the US and under pressure from the conservative Catholic Church. They were works that were feasible to produce and likely to be successful in a city whose population was divided by religion, language and traditions. 

Cette conférence explore les origines et les mises en scènes de la Société canadienne d’opérette et d’opéra de Montréal, une compagnie qui était actif à la fin des années 1870. Dirigée par Calixa Lavallée et Frantz Jehin Prume, le SCOOM a été établi à la suite d’un décret fait par l’évêque de Montréal Édouard-Charles Fabre qui interdisent l’utilisation chœurs mixtes tout au long de l’archidiocèse, et par conséquent a fait la chorale de l’Église Saint-Jacques obsolète. Après le succès de leur première production, Lavallée et Prume s’est rendu compte que la société pourrait être utilisé comme un tremplin vers la création d’une école de musique financé par le gouvernement, sur le modèle du Conservatoire de Paris. Dans cette conférence, j’explore le contexte social et politique dans lequel le SCOOM a été créé et les détails de la mise en scène et la réception de ses productions de Jeanne d’Arc de Gounod et La dame blanche de Boieldieu. En sélectionnant ces œuvres pour la performance, les organisateurs ont répondu aux exigences et aux contraintes d’une société habituée au divertissement populaire des États-Unis et sous la pression de l’Eglise catholique conservatrice. Ils étaient des œuvres qui étaient possible de produire et de chances de réussir dans une ville dont la population a été divisée par la religion, la langue et les traditions.
