Thesis Title: Careers and Labour Market Flexibility in Global Industries: The Case of Seafarers
The flexibilisation of labour in the global labour market has been a bone of contention among scholars from different disciplines over the past four decades. On the one hand, such employment is seen as a detrimental practice to employees, who might lose their occupational identity as well as constantly experience job insecurity and uncertainty. On the other hand, flexible employment is perceived as the pillar of freedom, enabling individuals to fulfil their potential through increasing labour market opportunities. In an attempt to assess these competing views within the context of a global industry where flexible employment is commonplace, the shipping industry has been chosen as the basis of an investigation to answer the following research questions:
1. To what extent are flexible employment arrangements perceived as beneficial to employers?
2. What are the perceived implications of flexible employment arrangements for employees?
3. What is the relationship between the flexibility of employment and the occupational identities of seafarers?
To answer these research questions, qualitative research methods were used to speak to over 70 participants. The methods included mostly semi-structured in-depth interviews and informal conversations conducted aboard a cargo ship.
The findings of the thesis can be largely divided into three main aspects. First, the thesis sheds light on the complexities of flexible employment in the shipping industry (i.e. the perceived negative and positive implications of such employment) for employers and employees. Secondly, using the shipping industry as an example, the thesis challenges current widespread views about the benefits of flexible employment to employers. Thirdly, the thesis presents the idea of a ‘double occupational identity’ to describe the often-complex occupational identity of seafarers related to differences in perceived labour market power.
Several strengths, limitations, and recommendations for policy and also for major stakeholders in the shipping industry are raised at the end of the thesis.

Career education is an inseparable part of general education. In many countries a very big attention is paid to this. In Lithuania after 1990, a qualitatively new career education system has been started to be created, the development of which was not consistent and systematic during the whole period up to 2017. From a scientific point of view, most of the attention was paid to the analysis and estimation of the learners’ opinion, however much less attention was paid to career professionals’ position. Career professional’s position has been established in Lithuania since January 1st, 2017. However, such specialist preparation, their qualification questions, employment in education establishments, and career education process organisation and realisation remains problematic.
A qualitative / pilot research, carried out between February-March 2017, was focused on the career professionals’ (43) position on career questions analysis. It was sought to analyse career education situation in comprehensive schools, grounding the analysis on career professionals’ position.
It has been established, that career education has the greatest importance on students’ professional decision formation, and professional decision demand is the most important. Career actualisation demand is also important, because it helps the students understand career importance, encourages the students of low motivation to be interested in their career. Career education process organisation factors most frequently cause difficulties for career education: one encounters organisational difficulties, career education episodicity is experienced.
It has been stated, that resultivity of career education in a comprehensive school is high, because students’ professional decision is improved, motivation, responsibility are strengthened, abilities, competencies are educated, knowledge and information are provided. However, seeking to improve career education at school, it is necessary to raise specialists’ qualification and to establish a full-time position.

Bu araştırmanın amacı, 2018-2019 eğitim ve öğretim yılında Bolu il merkezindeki okul türlerinin tümünde görev yapan öğretmenlerin öznel kariyer başarılarına ilişkin algılarını ortaya çıkarmak ve bu algıları çeşitli değişkenler açısından incelemektir. Karma yöntem desenlerinden biri olan sıralı açıklayıcı desenin kullanıldığı araştırmada nicel veriler, Öznel Kariyer Başarısı Ölçeği (Budak & Gürbüz, 2017) kullanılarak toplanılmıştır. Bolu merkez ilçedeki 94 resmî okulda görev yapan 3127 öğretmenden oluşan araştırma evreni içerisinden tesadüfî örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilen 24 resmî okulda görev yapan 512 öğretmenden elde edilen nicel veriler, öncelikle güvenirlik analizine tabi tutulmuş olup Cronbach's alpha iç tutarlılık katsayıları (α=.808 ile α=.945 arasında) nicel verilerin analiz için güvenilir olduğunu göstermiştir. Non-parametrik testler kullanılarak yapılan nicel analizlerin sonuçlarına göre; öğretmenlerin öznel kariyer başarılarına ilişkin görüşleri "kısmen katılıyorum" düzeyindedir. Ölçeğin boyutları arasında en yüksek aritmetik ortalamanın İşin Anlamlılığı boyutunda, en düşük aritmetik ortalamanın Tatmin boyutunda olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Öğretmenlerin medeni durum değişkeninde anlamlı bir fark ortaya çıkmazken; cinsiyet, görev yapılan okul türü, mesleki kıdem ve öğrenim durumu değişkenlerinde anlamlı bir fark ortaya çıkmıştır. Nicel analiz sonucunda ortaya çıkan anlamlı farkları derinlemesine incelemek için araştırmada nitel yöntem kullanılmıştır. Durum çalışması deseninde devam eden araştırmada, nitel veri toplama aracı olarak araştırmacılar tarafından ölçme aracının içeriğine uygun olarak hazırlanan yarı yapılandırılmış "Öğretmen Görüşme Formu" kullanılmıştır. Nitel veriler, amaçlı örneklem yöntemiyle seçilen 32 öğretmenden elde edilmiştir. Elde edilen nitel veriler, betimsel analiz yöntemiyle analiz edilmiş ve bu yöntemle nicel sonuçların altında yatan gerekçelere ulaşılmaya çalışılmıştır.

This research focuses on sport practices in the lives of people with “severe” physical dis/abilities. More specifically, this study analyses the commitment to a powerchair hockey career, by both men and women, in order to determine how participation in collective sport practice forms and transforms their life paths. The study is based on a multi-sited ethnography of powerchair hockey in French- and German-speaking Switzerland. Different tools have been used to collect data: participant observation, life narrative interviews, photo-elicitation interviews, and archival research and consultation.
Results show that powerchair hockey is the only team sport organized on a national scale available to powerchair users. A majority of players live with a progressive neuromuscular disease. Powerchair hockey is a social arena located at the intersection of two social worlds: the “able-bodied world” and the “world of dis/ability”. It combines the principles of participation in these two social worlds, thus allowing the insiders and outsiders of these two worlds to meet and form a community.
Commitment to a powerchair hockey career forms and transforms the life paths of people with “severe” physical dis/abilities by providing the conditions for: (1) facilitated movement between the “able-bodied world” and the “world of dis/ability”; (2) the learning of “handicapabilities”; (3) the embodiment of a disposition to mobility; (4) a diversification of spheres of life and networks of interdependence; and (5) joining in a collective history through transmission of a legacy to younger peers. By playing powerchair hockey, athletes distance themselves from the social roles of “disabled people” to which they were assigned prior to a sporting career. At the same time, they perform the social identity of the supercrip athlete. Thus, commitment to sport constitutes a shift away from the life path initially prescribed by doctors and the Swiss Disability Insurance program. Commitment to sport may be considered a form of emancipation from social scripts overdetermined by institutional management of the biological destinies of people living with so-called “severe” physical dis/abilities.

Entrepreneurship triggers the economic condition of a country. Entrepreneurship increases the standard of living and has provided opportunities to improve the standard of living. There are several studies on the relationship between the entrepreneurial characteristics and entrepreneurial intention of students. There are very few studies on the need and importance of entrepreneurial skills over the entrepreneurial intention of graduate students. This paper concentrates on the 537 graduate students of science, commerce, and arts. The reason for selecting these students is to understand the level of involvement in entrepreneurial activity and their preparedness to take up entrepreneurship as a career. Hypotheses were tested with descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and chi-square tests. This study helps to understand the willingness of students towards entrepreneurship. This paper focuses on the entrepreneurial skills required to equip graduate students to choose entrepreneurship as a career. This book should supplement automotive engineering texts and workshop practice, never substitute for them. English for Mechanics will ideally be used by a skilled language teacher who also has a good mechanical understanding and can bring the content to life. Since most of the target students already have a good grasp of mechanical processes, the teaching can be dynamic and interactive. The book deliberately uses short texts to make learning effective and easy. An appendix briefly explains why short texts are so useful as a learning and teaching tool. Teachers can use the principles involved to shape their own curriculum material.

Women in India are held in an elevated position. They are in concert to part their role in all walks of life shoulder to shoulder men. Today, women are found in Foreign Service, Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, in the field of medicine, education, in business, as Company Directors, as air hostess, a nurse, politicians, and many more, in addition to the role played as a mother, wife, sister, daughter, mother-in-law, etc., in their respective home. Now, women in legal services have even become a common prospect and they have proved that they are capable enough to handle jobs equally to men. Although, the women have left an identical and social mark in their legal profession, the realization of fulfilling their life between the personal and career remains a conflict. Personal and professional life balance or work-life balance refers to an individual’s priority level towards personal and professional life activities. It is the state of attaining equilibrium in which demands of personal, professional and family life are equally met. Getting an equal balance between work and life is once in a blue moon, hard to achieve. Bu çalışma KÖK – Kişiye Özel Kariyer Modelinin içinde yer alan “Kariyer Check Up” isimli uygulamanın iş ve yaşam kalitesine olan etkisi araştırılmak üzere yapılmıştır. Hızla değişen dünyanın beklentilerimizle birlikte karakterimizde yarattığı farklılıklar hem hayatımızı hem de kariyerimizi doğrudan etkilemektedir. Bilginin ışık hızıyla yayıldığı günümüzde modern insanın en önemli ihtiyaçlarından birisi koçluk ve koçluğun hayatımıza dokunması gereken yerlerden birisi de şüphesiz ki kariyer. Meslek ve firma sayısının fazlalığı, kişinin kendini iyi tanıyamaması, gelişmeleri takip etmekte zorlanması gibi birçok faktör bireylerin kariyer seçimlerini yapmasında dezavantaj sağlamaktadır. Bu doğrultuda ortaya çıkmış ve başarılı sonuçlar alınmış olan “Kariyer Check Up” isimli uygulama detaylı olarak çalışmamızda incelenecektir.

This research aims to seek out and determine the influences of Overseas Filipino
Workers to their children's choice if course a career among the high school students,
specifically the grade 9 and 10 students of S.Y. 2019-2020. It helps in determining the
relationship of the factors and influence of Parents over their children’s career. The
total number of respondents compromised of Grade 9 and Grade 10 students consisting
a total of 89 students. A likert-scale and a survey checklist was used to gather data in
terms of: years of stay in the UAE, Parent’s Career, Factors in choosing a job. In return,
the data summarized lead to a conclusion that great number of responses came from
students whose parents are both working under Health and Safety, and Asia as their
most preferred work place and salary being the most important factor in choosing their
job. to summarize all the given data, the usage of FPR and one-way analysis of variance
(ANOVA) was utilized. After gathering of all data, it determined and interpreted that
the formulated Null hypotheses in the beginning of the research which helped them
determine the outcome of the data gathered that incorporated the specifics and
information that correlates in answering what are the influences of OFW Parents in
their Children’s choices regarding careers.

Excellent secondary school academic achievement in Kenya is received with jubilation as this forms the beginning of lucrative careers studied at universities or colleges by students. Students failing to achieve academically well in secondary school tend to miss out in post-secondary institutions and become relegated to less lucrative jobs. This study attempted to address the perennial problem of academic achievement in secondary schools that leads to students receding in test scores. It was geared at specifically analyzing factors contributing to academic achievement in secondary schools in Hamisi sub-county, Vihiga-Kenya. The study was guided by the following objective: To establish the impact of teaching and learning resources to students’ academic achievement in secondary schools in Hamisi Sub-county, Vihiga – Kenya. The study employed descriptive survey research design. The target population was 4,298 consisting of 41 Principals, 428 teachers, 3826 students, 1 DEO and 2 AEOs. Simple random sampling was used to select the teachers, students and the AEO. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the DEO. The sample size was 525 respondents consisting of 12 principals, 128 teachers, 383 students, one DEO and one AEO. Data collection tools used was structured and unstructured questionnaires, interview schedules and document analysis. Instrument validity was done through content validity whereas the test and re-test technique was used to test the reliability of the tools comparing with a Pearson Correlation Coefficient of 0.5. Quantitative data analysis was done using descriptive statistics and the data was presented using frequency counts, means and percentages with the aid of the SPSS Version 16.0. Qualitative data analysis was done thematically hence results of data analysis were presented in form of frequency distribution tables, bar/line graphs, and pie charts. The study established that students receded academically at the secondary schooling level as a result of factors related to Teaching and Learning Resources (TLR). It was recommended that the Government should roll out a fund to facilitate TLR production apart from encouraging the teachers to be innovative in production of these resources and that secondary schools should make achievement targets in respect to student entry behavior and work to augment this. These researchers hope that findings of this research will be vital for both Hamisi sub-county Education Office and the Ministry of Education Science and Technology in achieving the integral national goals of education which will transform the students into competitive global citizens.

The economic literature shows many evidences on the relationship between labor market success and personality. Our study examines the connection between Myers–Briggs personality types and academic performance among students of University of Debrecen, Hungary. Our sample consists of 2nd and 3rd year Business Administration and Management and Business Informatics students (N = 408). We examine the significance of the difference between the grade means of the Myers–Briggs personality types and the group means by year and major with one sample t-test on 10% significance level. We also analyze the effect of personality types on the academic performance with linear regression models containing additional independent variables (gender, local inhabitance, work experience, university year, major, age) on 10% significance level. There are many influences that affect the preferences of grade 10 students in choosing a track to proceed to senior high school. Likewise, this study aims to identify influence of preference of a Senior High School track that is commonly encountered by the Grade 10 students in terms of Gender, Socio-Economic Status, Average academic grades, nature of parent’s occupation; and, strand and the level of influence of the respondent  to be associated with preferences in choosing a track in senior high school in terms of family influence-decision; peer influence; financial condition; and employability. It is obvious that Vocational guidance plays an integral part in the choice of a career among youths. This is so because a period of proper counseling in the choice of Vocational and Technical Education programs for our youth will make them a better individual to know and accept their personality and interest, as they select a vocation of their choice where they can develop a self-reliant life in future without seeking for a white collar job or be floating in the labor market. To this effect, this paper examines the impact of vocational guidance in career choice and technical education of our youth, how vocational guidance can enhance their choice of career. Therefore, developing an entrepreneurial skills or ability, which will make a better individual through Vocational Guidance and Counseling, especially in a constantly changing world is paramount in this era of technology. ● “Doğu” ve “Batı” dünyaları arasında arafta kalmış, kendisine yer bulamamış, kimlik bunalımı yaşayan toplumlarda, Daryush Shayegan’ın “Yeni olanı keşfedemeyen tarihin gerisinde kalan az gelişmiş milletler, kültürel şizofreni içerisindedirler.” sözünü doğrular bir biçimde, kayırmacılık ve suiistimallerin varlığı, sahip olunan devlet sistemindeki aksaklıklardan ziyade, toplumun vicdanında ve moral değerlerinde yaşanan yozlaşmanın ve yabancılaşmanın bir sonucudur.

● Kişilerin değerinin mensubiyetleri ile değil, sahip oldukları bilgi, beceri ve tutumlar ile ölçüldüğü bir çağda yükselen değerler; adalet, eşitlik, erdem ve liyakattir. İnsanlarının mutluluğunu ve kurumlarının verimliliğini önemseyenlere düşen görev; zamanın ruhuna uymak ve zamanın akışına ters kürek çekmemektir.

● Türkiye’nin kamu personel rejimi bu haliyle devam etmemelidir. İnsanına değer veren, eşitlikçi, temel hak ve özgürlükleri önceleyen, çoğulcu demokrasiyle yönetilen devletlerin bu alandaki iyi uygulama örnekleri tercih edilmelidir. Hâlihazırdaki verimsiz paradigmanın devam ettirme imkânının kalmadığı görülmelidir. Her iktidar değişikliğinde personel reformu sözü veren hükümetlerin, bir süre sonra, tıpkı eskilerin vaatlerini unutmasına benzer hafıza kaybı yaşamaları ve “bizden öncekiler de böyle yapıyordu” mazeretine sığınmaları, aynı zamanda bunu bir meşrulaştırma aracı olarak kullanmaları kabul edilemez. Başkasının günahlarını, kendi günahlarını haklı göstermek için kullanmak erdemli bir davranış değildir.

● ABSTRACT

We can define the ill aspect of the public human resource regimes with this dictum that “Those defeated in political battle should retire from office; to the victor belong the spoils.” Governments in Turkey, under the guise of competence, choose talented people only from among their own supporters to the higher offices of bureaucracy. The rationale for this approach always change, therefore favoritism and nepotism is welcomed under various guises: someday it could be “the fight against the military/civil bureaucratic oligarchs”, sometimes “struggle against the religious extremism”, another day the “struggle against the status quo”, and at another time “the fight against the elitist white Turks”. This is not any surprising, in fact, we can expect that adoption of competence and career principle would face difficulties and limitations in a country where social development is inadequate, the political situation is instable, national income level is low and employment options are limited, as it is the case in many provisions of law. From the era where even an ant’s rights were observed to our day, intolerant and indifferent attitude that the Anatolian people embraced is getting materialized in the state practices and is reproduced in the state apparatus through the political parties coming to power and the governments that they form. However, in the public human resources management, it is not anymore possible to sustain such adverse effects of underdevelopment as favoritist and inefficient paradigm under the cloak of the motto that “This is Turkey”.

Being smart and bright are important but many people who have these intellectual qualities underperform or are less than successful. If you are of normal intelligence and effectively demonstrate the following qualities – good attitude, a strong work ethic, effective communication skills, proficient time management, and honesty – you are going to be successful beyond measure in any pursuit you choose.
