Caricature (Visual Studies)

This chapter analyses a caricature, produced in 1753 by the watercolourist Paul Sandby entitled Burlesque sur le Burlesque. This caricature attacks the painter William Hogarth, in particular, his recently published aesthetic treatise, The Analysis of Beauty, and his stance in the English Academic debates of the 1750s – a series of events in which English artists debated whether or not they should migrate from private artistic academies to publicly funded and hierarchically organised arts academies on the continental model. The chapter explores the way in which Sandby targets his object, and through iconographical analysis, demonstrates how caricature operates visually as a literal puzzle that forefronts certain criticisms, and veils others.

Nous avons pu constater que l'humour, comme point de départ, peut s'emparer d'un éventail de sujets différents les uns des autres. Le sens ordinaire des mots, les situations, la physionomie des personnages n’est qu'une invitation à deviner leur autre visage, le sens figuré des images comiques. La presse germaniques a été vivement inspirée par les événements qui ont précédé la chute du mur de Berlin en octobre / novembre 1989 et par ceux qui lui ont succédé. Elle a suivi avec beaucoup d'attention le développement politique jusqu'à la Réunification du 3 octobre 1990 et aux premières élections dans l'Allemagne unifiée en décembre de la même année. Les caricatures se réfèrent à cette série d'événements sous un double point de vue: celui d'une affaire interallemande, et d'un événement de la politique internationale.

Before the former Yugoslavia was divided by wars, its inhabitants successfully lived side by side in peace. This collection seeks to explain how former neighbors became enemies, with the hope that understanding what drove these peoples apart will help us discover ways for them to coexist in peace again.Contributors analyze political cartoons, psychiatry, the arts, visual media, and law to present a diversity of views on the conflicts in Yugoslavia. While the chapters in this book deal with regional developments, they are not so much focused on politics as they are concerned with how values and attitudes are altered and new identities formed. Thus, this volume goes beyond recent journalistic accounts and should remain relevant for years to come.This book began as a special issue of the journal Anthropology of East Europe Review. Most of the contributors to that issue have revised their chapters for this collection, and new chapters have been added, including one on the recent war in Kosovo. La communication porte sur la dimension satirique d’une gravure de Jaspar Isaac intitulée « La Belle Helena. Cléopatre. Lucrèce »,  étudiée à la lumière du discours burlesque et misogyne qui voit le jour dans l'art et la littérature de la Renaissance.

Considérer l’image dans la dimension technique de son élaboration n’est pas une réflexion périphérique à la question de la caricature chez les Goncourt. Si l’image est plus volontiers abordée sur les plans stylistique et politique, la fabrique des estampes caricaturales demeure un paramètre majeur, ce dont témoigne le discours critique et essayiste des Goncourt développé dans le Journal, la correspondance, la critique d’art ou encore la monographie sur Gavarni. La fabrique graphique de la caricature, c’est d’abord une pratique personnelle pour les Goncourt. On sait par ailleurs la passion des deux frères pour la collection et leur attrait pour la bibliophilie, intérêts qui questionnent directement l’esthétique, la facture et la valeur de l’image. Si le commentaire des Goncourt prend la forme d’un discours avisé, c’est aussi parce qu’ils ont été très tôt versés dans la critique d’art. Ces considérations posent la question de la nature et de la portée du propos des Goncourt sur les modalités matérielles de la fabrique des images caricaturales, que ce savoir émane des sociabilités artistiques et culturelles, d’une expérience de critique d’art ou encore d’une participation à la presse. Gravure, lithographie, eau-forte occupent une place centrale dans la vision du monde des Goncourt, à une époque où l’estampe gagne une visibilité à travers les associations d’artistes. Mais c’est avant tout par les sociabilités et le réseau amical que se forme chez les deux frères une conscience des techniques de l’image.

La civilisation du journal ne voit pas seulement apparaître une circulation accrue des idées, une extension du lectorat, un mode d’information tissé de romanesque et de nouveaux rythmes liés à la quotidienneté. Elle instaure aussi un rapport spécifique à l’objet en papier. À l’heure où triomphe la chose imprimée, la culture médiatique est éminemment matérielle : manipulations, appropriations, circulations invitent à considérer les usages concrets du livre, du journal, de la brochure et de l’affiche, depuis les modes d’étalage à la vente jusqu’aux modalités de collection du livre et de conservation du roman-feuilleton, en passant par le démembrement du tract et le recyclage de l’affiche. Cet article examine les objets en papier produits par les éditeurs de pittoresques et de littérature panoramique dans les années 1830-1860 en France.

This study focuses on the commercial and media aspect of the oppression of black women in America and perhaps all over the world. It looks at the caricatures of Mammy/Aunt Jemima, a Sapphire, and a Jezebel. These were invented during times of slavery and they are continuously being used to misrepresent black women and discredit any efforts to liberate ourselves and others. The myth of the strong matriarch was created to oppress the black community using it as an example that everything will fail if black women or women were put in charge of the household or community. This study was created to debunk the myth, expose the caricatures, and alter people's bad idea of black women. Also, I provide a solution to groups of people who are currently helping young black girls and afro-latinas to have high self-confidence and self-esteem.

En 1967, un año antes del golpe de estado del General Juan Velasco Alvarado que depone del poder al presidente Fernando Belaúnde Terry, una serie de caricaturas aparecen publicadas en varios medios de prensa. A pesar de las distintas tendencias políticas de estos periódicos y revistas, en todos ellos, el presidente de la República aparece representado como un líder débil, desorientado y poco apto a seguir dirigiendo el país. En este artículo, explico cómo estas caricaturas pudieron haber favorecido el golpe militar, creando un desafecto en la
población hacia la figura del presidente Belaúnde, así como por la democracia.

In 1967, a year before the coup d’état of General Juan Velasco Alvarado, that overthrew the President Fernando Belaúnde Terry, a series of cartoons were published in different medias.
Despite having different political opinions, all these newspapers and magazines depicted the president as a weak and disoriented leader that seemed unable to run the country. In this article, I explain how these cartoons had a decisive impact on the coup d’état, creating a general dislike towards the President Belaúnde and democracy.

Le récit des crimes du 7 janvier 2015 comme leur motif le plus évident - les caricatures du prophète Mahomet - ont fait le tour du monde, nourrissant des réactions et des interprétations multiples et divergentes malgré l’unanimisme des condamnations. Les lignes qui suivent se penchent sur la réception de cette tragédie en Chine. Ce texte ne s’aventure pas sur les causes multiples et complexes qui ont rendu possible ces drames sauf à préciser qu’une idéologie mortifère et totalitaire s’est épanouie sur une pluralité de facteurs et de temporalités indémêlables. Parmi les enjeux de dimension globale soulevés par ces évènements, il est possible d’identifier pêle-mêle les pratiques terroristes de l’islamisme radical, la place des minorités dans les états-nations contemporains, la question du blasphème visant des figures politiques ou religieuses, la liberté d’expression et ses limites. Dans la longue durée, ces évènements percutent aussi la condition postcoloniale du monde, et le legs d’une hégémonie non seulement géopolitique et économique mais aussi culturelle et épistémologique des sociétés occidentales. Si les sujets évoqués dans les lignes précédentes ont bien été mobilisés parmi les interprétations « chinoises » de ces attentats, la distance culturelle, politique et affective avec les évènements a parfois empêché les commentateurs chinois de saisir certains aspects du drame propres à un imaginaire national, un contexte idéologique et un langage politique spécifiquement français. La résonance globale de ces évènements ne saurait ainsi occulter que leur interprétation se déploya au sein d’un imaginaire institué déterminé par des enjeux politiques, idéologiques et linguistiques propres à la société chinoise. Parler d’une réception « chinoise » comporte le risque d’une simplification abusive et d’une essentialisation discutable d’un espace social, politique et culturel hétérogène. Un imaginaire dominant quelque peu paresseux qui réduit la « Chine » à son régime politique autoritaire empêche trop souvent de saisir les nuances, les variations et les dynamiques internes à la société chinoise. Des points de vue parfois divergents ont pu apparaitre dans les commentaires et les interprétations des évènements de janvier 2015, en fonction du statut des auteurs, des rubriques ou des titres de presse. Cette absence d’opinion unanime fut encore plus flagrante sur les réseaux sociaux pendant les quelques jours qui ont suivi les évènements. Plus tardivement, des articles de facture plus théoriques se sont confrontés au sujet dans des revues académiques et à partir de perspectives disciplinaires variées telles que la sociologie des media, les sciences de la communication, la philosophie, les études françaises. Des publications de think tanks rattachés au Parti ont aussi proposés des analyses visant à rappeler la doxa marxiste-léniniste sur la nature et le rôle de la presse dans les sociétés occidentales. Qu’il s’agisse de la presse, des textes académiques ou des interventions d’acteurs étatiques, la position dominante peut se synthétiser à grand traits de la façon suivante : une condamnation unanime et ferme du terrorisme associée à des marques appuyées de solidarité avec les victimes et, quasi-simultanément, l’apparition de critiques à l’endroit des journalistes de Charlie Hebdo en tant qu’ils incarnaient une position, un discours et des valeurs « occidentales » antagonistes avec le modèle défendu par l’Etat-Parti.
Ce sont les fondements idéologiques et politiques, mais aussi parfois épistémologiques et historiographiques, de cette critique, que cet essai se propose d’interroger, sachant que la fonction métonymique de « Charlie » en tant que symbole global de « valeurs occidentales » putatives ne s’est évidemment pas limitée pas au contexte chinois. Dans quelle mesure, et comment, ces évènements ont-ils trouvé une résonance discursive et des correspondances idéologiques dans l’espace politico-médiatique chinois ? Quelle fut la fonction de cette critique du journal satirique dans le contexte idéologique et politique chinois ? Bref, de quoi les caricatures de Charlie Hebdo ont-elles été le nom en Chine continentale ?

Au début du 20e siècle, l’artiste montréalais Joseph Charlebois est très actif dans la région métropolitaine. En plus de travailler comme cartographe à la ville de Montréal, il réalise de nombreuses enluminures qu’offre la municipalité, aux dignitaires en visite la région. Il est aussi caricaturiste pour plusieurs journaux locaux. Il produira d’ailleurs un total de 13 albums de caricatures durant sa carrière, dont La Conscription, Montréal Juif et La Prohibition. Entre 1904 et 1905, il est le premier à mettre en bande dessinée le personnage du Père Ladébauche. Jusqu’à tout récemment, cette série était la seule production de ce genre attribué à l’artiste. Ce mémoire espère démontrer que s’ajoute à celle-ci une nouvelle production. Celle portant le titre Joe Connaissant, qui parait dans le journal La Patrie de Montréal entre les mois d’avril et d’août 1918 ; un total de 17 planches signé J. Sée. Nous comptons faire la démonstration que ce nom n’est qu’un pseudonyme et que Joseph Charlebois est en fait l’auteur, non pas d’une, mais de deux bandes dessinées.

In The Efflorescence of Caricature, 1759–1838, an international, interdisciplinary, and intergenerational team of scholars reconfigures the geography of modern visual satire, as the expansive narrative reaches from North America to Europe, to China and the Ottoman Empire. Caricature's specific visual cultures are also laid bare, its iconographic means and material support, as well as the diverse milieu of its making—the military, the art academy, diplomacy, politics, art criticism, and popular entertainment. Some of its greatest practitioners—James Gillray and Honoré Daumier—are seen in a new light, alongside some of their far flung and opportunistic pastichers. Most trenchantly, assumptions about the consequences of caricature's rise come under intense scrutiny, interrogated for its cherished and long-vaunted civilizational claims on individual character, artistic supremacy, political liberty, and global domination.

Sarah Lucas is one of the greatest artists I know belonging to the generation that rose during the Clinton Nineties. She has a feeling for her materials that quite simply takes your breath away, a formidable command over sculptural form, a knack for the striking composition, juxtaposition or installation, an abiding interest in charged and often politically-incorrect content, a deliciously wicked sense of humor, and ranks among our better wordsmiths.  “What is there not to like?”, one might ask.  A more extensive version of this article is forthcoming.

Ce mémoire réévalue la production canadienne et écossaise de l’aquarelliste et caricaturiste écossaise Katherine Jane Ellice (1812-1864). Adoptant une perspective transnationale, cette étude offre un portrait de la pratique artistique, humoristique et des réseaux sociaux d’Ellice. Cette dernière est issue de la culture politique de l’aristocratie britannique du XIXe siècle qui voyage au gré du calendrier parlementaire de la capitale anglaise aux maisons secondaires, au sein desquelles la politique a cours de manière plus informelle dans des cercles où les femmes ont une forte influence. C’est d’ailleurs un voyagement d’ordre politique qui mène Ellice au Bas-Canada en 1838 alors qu’elle accompagne son mari Edward Ellice Junior (1810-1880) qui occupe la fonction de secrétaire privé de Lord Durham (1792-1840) envoyé au Haut-Canada et au Bas-Canada en tant que gouverneur général afin d’établir un rapport sur la crise politique qui s’y déroule.Voyageant de Québec à Beauharnois, où se trouve la seigneurie de son beau-père, Ellice se rend aussi aux États-Unis et au Haut-Canada. Ce mémoire s’appuie sur des documents originaux d’Ellice conservés dans des archives nationales (Bibliothèque et Archives Canada, National Library of Scotland), notamment son journal de voyage, ainsi que des dessins et des aquarelles qu’elle peignait et échangeait avec des membres de son entourage. La contribution d’Ellice à l’histoire de l’art est expliquée à travers l’analyse détaillée de sa production artistique, accordant une attention particulière à l’une des aquarelles qu’elle a peinte durant sa détention au presbytère de Beauharnois en novembre 1838 lorsqu’elle fut retenue prisonnière par un groupe de patriotes pendant près d’une semaine. Cette analyse propose de nouvelles interprétations et contribue à démontrer que des femmes ont pris des armes durant les rébellions patriotes. Cette étude aborde pour la première fois la production caricaturale d’Ellice et sa participation au sein de réseaux d’échanges d’images humoristiques. Finalement, ce mémoire examine le rôle politique joué par Ellice des années 1840 à 1860 alors qu’elle vivait avec son mari et son beau-père à Glenquoich, au nord de l’Écosse, dans une résidence accueillant chaque année des centaines de personnes. Ellice assumait alors une responsabilité politique qui contribua également à la position unique qu’elle occupa dans la circulation de la culture visuelle de son époque.

This thesis reassesses the Canadian and Scottish artistic production of Scottish watercolourist and caricaturist Katherine Jane Ellice (1812-1864). Adopting a transnational perspective, the thesis offers a portrait of Ellice’s artistic practice, humour and social networks. Her political culture was that of the British aristocracy, which followed the parliamentary calendar by moving from the capital to the country houses where politics took place in the more informal circles in which women were very influential. Such politically motivated travel led Ellice to Lower Canada in 1838 when she accompanied her husband Edward Ellice Junior (1810-1880), at the time private secretary to Governor-general Lord Durham (1792-1840) during his mission to solve the political crisis taking place in Upper and Lower Canada. Travelling from Quebec City to Beauharnois, where the seigneurial house of her father-in-law was located, Ellice also visited the United States and the Upper Canada. The thesis draws on original documents by Ellice held in state archives (Library and Archives Canada, National Library of Scotland), notably her travel diary and the drawings and watercolours that she painted and exchanged within her social networks. The distinct contributions of Ellice to art history are elucidated through detailed analysis of her artistic production, drawing a special attention to one of the watercolours that she painted during her confinement at the presbytery of Beauharnois in November 1838 when a group of patriots made her their prisoner for nearly a week. This analysis fosters new interpretations and adds to the evidence of women taking arms during the rebellions. This study also addresses for the first time Ellice’s caricatural production
and her participation in exchange networks of humorous images. Finally, the thesis examines the political role played by Ellice from the 1840’s to the 1860’s when, living in Glenquoich (North of Scotland) with her husband and her father-in-law, in a house visited each year by hundreds of persons, she assumed a political responsibility that also furthered the unique role that she played in the circulation of visual culture.

Taking into consideration the period of Khrushchev’s artistic Thaw (1956-62), the article analyses, with the help of satirical cartoons of the time, the leading and most widespread judgments expressed by Soviet criticism on contemporary Western art.

In this paper the author aims to show the specific historic and stylistic connections that existed between 19th century caricature and early animated films. By doing so and by accepting caricature as the essence of animation, the author hopes to shed new light on some of the specificities of animation as an art form and especially its ability to create hyperreal figurines or even, supernatural figurines. That is, not only fantasy characters that look real, but “cartoony”
characters that have the ability to come out as more realistic than less distorted, thus truly more realistic, representations.

L’article analyse la relation entre la caricature et la mode à partir de quelques exemples de la satire visuelle et textuelle de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. La période est propice à la caricature de mode car, tout en reflétant les transformations politiques, économiques et sociales du temps, les tendances vestimentaires prônées à l'époque par les périodiques de mode reposent sur l'exagération et la déformation, qualités qui sont aussi les armes des humoristes. La première partie examine la représentation graphique du costume féminin, avant tout celle de la crinoline-cage, et les significations véhiculées par ces images railleuses. La seconde se concentre sur les fragments de La Comédie de notre temps (1874-1876) de Bertall, consacrés à la mode et au vêtement, et cherche à définir l'image de la femme et sa place dans la société bourgeoise en pleine mutation.

This essay establishes a graphic history pertaining to Franciszka Themerson's UBU Comic Strip (1970). A product of her extensive engagement with Alfred Jarry's play Ubu Roi (1896), this work invites us to consider Themerson's vanguard approach to caricature-, cartoon-, and comic strip-making in relation to their interwoven histories. To this end, a connection is made between Themerson (1907-1988) and “father of the comic strip,” Rodolphe Töpffer (1799-1846), through their shared use of a specific and enduring autographic strategy described here as the “slovenly idiom.” This idiom is traced from the emergent modern caricature, cartoon and comic strip of the nineteenth century to the assimilation of these graphic strategies by the avant-garde community to which Jarry (1873-1907) belonged in fin-de-siècle Paris. Links are drawn between Jarry's and his associates' graphic depictions of Ubu and Themerson's later portrayal of the character.

El Humor gráfico. Texto introductorio al volumen El Humor Gráfico (Diminuta, 2019), en que se hace una pequeña síntesis de lo que es el humor gráfico, un rápido recorrido histórico desde el nacimiento de la caricatura y la aparición de la prensa satírica, y un apunte bibliográfico a los textos que pretenden aportar algo a la materia.

Le milieu du XIXe siècle est marqué par le développement de scandales littéraires ou artistiques, qui semblent garantir aux oeuvres qu'ils concernent la qualité d'oeuvres "modernes", faisant rupture avec une tradition épuisée dans la réitération académique. L'examen s'attache ici, à titre d'exemple, à un de ces "tableaux-événements" : les Baigneuses de Courbet, toile exposée sous le titre La Baigneuse au Salon officiel de 1853. L'examen de la réception exhaustive des comptes rendus de presse - articles et caricatures - permet ici de dégager l'état du regard porté sur la toile dans un temps social et culturel particulier : le sujet est alors mis en péril face à cette Vénus anadyomène au corps qui échappe aux normes académiques et aux canons datés du beau idéal.

Ever since the psychological exploration of caricature in the writings of Ernst Gombrich and Ernst Kris, images of infamy and the penal practice of executio in effigie have been considered the predecessors of charged portraiture. 1 They are said to signal a transitional phase from a fetishistic handling as in envoûtement to the abstract notion of representation evolving in the early modern period. Caricature, they argue, preserves the inherent power of derision that is, however, no longer directed at the portrayed himself, but instead deflected to the public viewing the portray. Images of shame serve as a negative backdrop to the critical potential of caricature, which is believed to seal the aggressive drive of shaming within the aesthetic sphere. 2 In a similar vein, Werner Hofmann argued that caricature designates a shift to a modern mindset mirroring the Renaissance ideals of humanism and beauty. Resumen: A pesar de los debates que a partir de 1839 enfrentaron al daguerrotipo con las artes tradicionales, fotografía y caricatura iniciaron tempranamente una fructífera relación, que se extendería al nuevo siglo. En este artículo estudiamos algunas particularidades de este fenómeno en la prensa argentina, focalizándonos en la revista Caras y Caretas, cuyo carácter pionero y modélico sentó las bases para muchas publicaciones locales posteriores. Analizando las diversas formas de interacción entre fotografía y caricatura, mostramos el rápido proceso de sofisticación y entrenamiento visual que propiciaron estas tempranas revistas ilustradas.


Abstract: Despite the debates that, towards 1839, confronted the daguerreotype with the traditional arts, photography and caricature began a fruitful relationship that would extend well into the new century. In this paper, we analyze this phenomenon in the Argentine illustrated press, focusing particularly on pioneering and exemplary Caras y Caretas magazine, which somehow laid the foundation for most of the subsequent local publications. By analyzing the different ways in which caricature interacted with photography, we intend to show the role these pioneering magazines played in the quick process of sophistication and visual training of the local public.

Charlie Hebdo became a global name following the tragic events of 7 January 2015 in Paris. Following this, two competing, somewhat reductive forms of commentary on Charlie Hebdo rapidly emerged in the global media. Could Charlie Hebdo effectively be sidelined as a case of egregiously irresponsible and offensive satire, even if the attacks per se were inexcusable? Or could its cartoonists instead be championed as martyrs to free speech, having proved to have a backbone of conviction and courage that had been lacking elsewhere in the media? This article argues that a dual set of tensions have come to the fore through Charlie’s vertiginous global exposure. These are tensions between the local and the global, and between the ethics of conviction and the ethics of responsibility. It looks to highlight how Charlie Hebdo’s contributors have been engaging with these tensions, both in the ‘survivor’s issue’ of 14 January 2015 and in other spaces of commentary.

​When writing about The Grand Tour it is tempting to follow the romantic narrative tradition that has been established with letters and publications by English travelers. I will present a different story, a comical story and perhaps a more accurate one. The impact of The Grand Tour goes far beyond those who could arrange or afford to visit the important historical sites in Europe. This brings up some key questions. Who and what created the tradition of the tour and how honest are those images and descriptions? How were young gentlemen returning from the tour perceived and where did that opinion originate? What influenced the demise of The Grand Tour when so many never got the chance? The answers to these questions cannot be resolved through articles and travel journals. I will examine the gradual development of caricature produced from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. Looking closely at the different uses of caricature surrounding The Grand Tour I will prove that exaggerated accounts contributed to the Tour’s founding, continued popularity and eventual demise. Reexamining images that are accepted as accurate representations and those that are overtly satirical I will establish better understanding of how perception of The Grand Tour was largely influenced by fictitious portrayals by artists and illustrators.

Лодзинский университет СССР в немецкой карикатуре времен «холодной войны» В статье анализируется проблема восприятия Советского Союза как «Чужого» в культуре Западной Германии, на примере таких изображений СССР, как русский медведь, советские руководители, коммунистическая угроза, советский народ и Россия-Матушка. Рассмотрим эту проблему с помощью немецких политических плакатов времен «холодной войны», а также карикатур из политических журналов того времени 1 .

El curso estudia las interrelaciones entre la literatura y el periodismo en un conjunto significativo de publicaciones en el Perú durante el horizonte modernista (1880-1920). Se analiza la construcción de un dinámico espacio público, el mercado literario, las subjetividades como espectáculo, y el tiempo del capitalismo. Además, se estudian los cambios materiales en la cultura urbana limeña, los nuevos formatos discursivos de las revistas, la temporalización mediante representaciones verbales-gráficas de la experiencia social.
