The ERP (event-related potential) violation paradigm was used to investigate brain responses to morphologically correct and incorrect verb forms of Catalan. Violations of stem formation and inflectional processes were examined in separate experimental conditions. Our most interesting finding is that misapplications of stem formation rules elicit an early left preponderant negativity. This complements our previous ERP results on morphological violations

The massive arrival in Spain of students of immigrant origin has visibly altered the traditional configuration of schools, where ethnic, cultural and linguistic diversity is becoming increasingly manifest. This situation is worth being mentioned insofar as it affects all the different autonomous communities in the country, even more clearly Catalonia, where the educational system is organized under the parameters of bilingual education. One of the theoretical constructs supporting this educational model is the Linguistic Interdependence Hypothesis, developed by Jim Cummins at the beginning of the 1980s. This article provides a descriptive account of the state of contemporary Catalan language publishing. Utilizing a broad array of resources, including scholarly, media and official literature as well as interviews with bookstore owners, librarians and publishers it examines how a once-censored minority language has become central to a thriving regional publishing industry. As a result of both popular and state support, the Catalan reading public’s exposure to and consumption of Catalan print material is growing. The study acknowledges the diversity, complexity and profundity of the Catalan voice while showing how central the publishing industry has become to its expression.
