Chinese American Literature

First published in 1900, this short story depicts a young boy's true adoration for a traditionally 'feminine' doll. The work is authored by Alice Dunbar-Nelson, a biracial woman who writes the story's characters as racially unmarked 1. Published within the Chicago Daily News, "His Heart's Desire" was first read by a white audience of working-class individuals 2. The story underwent immense revision following its first appearance. The 1900 publication of "His Heart's Desire" was imbued with glorification of war heroes and imperialist sentiment 3. Though, its second revision in Legacy: A Journal of American Women Writers was strung through with ideals for world peace 4. Published in 2016, the second version of "His Heart's Desire" was included for a 21 st century academic audience that viewed women as equal, and named Alice Dunbar-Nelson's authorship directly. Dunbar-Nelson's revisions of idealizations for world peace would have been seen as controversial to the early 20 th century America that had recently won the Spanish-American war through imperialist pursuit 5. Раскрыты наиболее значимые художественные приёмы создания образов, характерные для романа и индивидуального стиля писателя в целом. В исследовании дана эстетическая характеристика символов романа, определена их художественная роль и выявлена полисемантичность в структуре романа.
В «Дополнении» представлен рефлектирующий герой в русской литературе и советском кино (от Онегина и Обломова к Зилову). Выделены характерные особенности литературного типа «лишнего человека» в фильме Н. Михалкова «Несколько дней из жизни И. И. Обломова», а также в пьесе А. Вампилова «Утиная охота» и в её экранизации «Отпуск в сентябре», режиссёра В. Мельникова.

Delving into the various things in Amy Tan’s The Valley of Amazement, this article seeks to value the being of materiality with inspiration gained from Thing Narratology and New Materialism. Rather than relegating fictitious objects to the overlooked background, this research illuminates their significance in shaping the protagonist Violet’s upbringing and identity, exposing the gender hierarchy that has exploited her, and promoting the narrative about her transformation. Notably, the furniture in the courtesan house bears the “material unconscious” and constitutes an “in-between” space that forms Violet’s multicultural identity, which proves pivotal in her later career success. As Violet enters the courtesan world herself, the presents from her male patrons begin to manipulate and materialise her, and her movement in the patriarchal society further reduces her to a sexually desired commodity. In her fight against male oppression, objects take on the vibrant agency by intra-acting with her, facilitating her growth, and propelling
narrative progression. With her thing narrative, Tan suggests her advocacy for the quality between cultures, genders, and between objects and humans. This analysis endeavours to inhabit things with a radiance rarely called out in previous critical readings of Tan’s novels and to liberate critical discourse on Chinese American literature from Orientalist caricatures.

The recent decades have witnessed substantial progress in stylistic research within digital humanities. Among others, Douglas Biber's multidimensional model considers the full set of core lexico-grammatical features and counts as an efficient tool for identifying stylistic variations. As the representative of Chinese American literature, Amy Tan's novels have been thoroughly explored as regards their representation of ethnic and cultural issues, while there is a scarcity of academic discussion on their stylistic uniqueness. In this context, the present study reflects on the stylistic differences among Tan's six novels across Biber's textual dimensions with the aid of MAT and R. The aim of this incorporation of data statistics and text analysis is twofold. First, to delineate the stylistic variations among Tan's novels along six main dimensions defined by Biber. Secondly, to determine whether there is a statistically significant correlation between any two dimensions in Tan's novels. Previous multidimensional analysisbased stylistic research primarily starts and ends with the first step, while this study further investigates the possible correlations to better reveal Tan's stylistic distinctions and avoid the loss of valuable information. This qualitative and quantitative comparison of stylistic variations demonstrates that computer-assisted methods can identify significant linguistic characteristics which literary critics might have ignored and eventually provide a more detailed interpretation of Tan's works.

This paper addresses the move away from sociological and cultural interpretations of texts at a time when the commodification of ethnicity is a dominant characteristic of late capitalism. I am interested in the way some scholars of Asian American literature are calling for a turn away from cultural approaches towards the aesthetics of the text. I would like to question the definition and role of the “aesthetic” in this critical move, a development that appears to be in contradiction with transnational constructions of American identity and the contemporary globalization of cultures, especially the global market in ethnic artistic and cultural commodities. Focussing upon the work of Gish Jen, I want to question this idea of the “aesthetic” and the ways in which art is constructed and consumed in the Chinese American literary context.

Studies on Chinese diaspora and their connections with their homeland have focused on various perspectives, such as historical, socio-cultural, and economic, however, rarely discussed through literary works. This study aims to elaborate on the representations of the Chinese diaspora’s homeland in novels by two Chinese-American authors, Maxine Hong Kingston and Amy Tan, and two Chinese-Indonesian authors, Marga T. and Mira W. By employing Salman Rushdie’s memory-based imaginary homeland and Benedict Anderson’s creation-based imagined communities, the authors of this essay discuss the Chinese- American and Chinese-Indonesian people’s views of their homeland in their present contexts in their respective countries. В статье рассматривается ряд историко-культурных реалий в романе «Обломов» с точки зрения их  семантических и функциональных особенностей. Социальный и предметный мир текста выступают самоценными носителями культурной памяти, составляя вместе с тем часть общего сюжетного замысла, единого смыслового целого. Тенденция к широким обобщениям, к универсализации и символизации органична для  поэтики Гончарова, что было неоднократно отмечено в критике и научной литературе. В персонажной сфере генерализующая тенденция формирует «символические типы» (А. Ф. Лосев), или сверхтипы, в сфере бытовой и вещной возвышает до уровня символа отдельные детали, предметы, бытовые ситуации. Этой тенденцией определяется и общая стратегия деисторизации повествования, создание условного (ахронного) текстового времени, в котором внешняя и внутренняя датировка теряют актуальность в движении сюжета. Большинство социально-исторических реалий в романах Гончарова, и не только в «Обломове», даются как явления повторяющиеся, ритуализованные, хронологически не конкретизированные. На внутренних структурных повторах, ритмах и циклах выстраивается и архитектоника гончаровского текста. В статье на уровне деталей и микросюжетов демонстрируются разнообразные стратегии, выполняющие функцию деисторизации повествования, включая именование (сигнификация) и не-именование объекта изображения, систему умолчаний в его репрезентации.

Drawing on Frederick Douglass's arguments about racial pride, this article develops and defends an account of feeling racial pride that centers on resisting racialized oppression. Such pride is racially ecumenical in that it does not imply partiality toward one's own racial group. This article argues that it can both accurately represent its intentional object and be intrinsically and extrinsically valuable to experience. It follows that there is, under certain conditions, a morally unproblematic, and plausibly valuable, kind of racial pride available to White people, though one that could hardly differ more from what is generally meant by “White pride.”

The aim of the research is to carry out a terminological distinction of concepts that since the 90s of the 20th century have been increasingly used to denote literature of migrant authors, as well as to identify and analyze those characteristic features of poetics by which Marjana Gaponenko’s novel can be determined as transnational. Maxine Hong Kingston is the author of two seminal Chinese American texts: The Woman Warrior: Memoir of a Girlhood Among Ghosts (1976) and China Men (1980). These works combine autobiography, folktales, history and fiction to relate the respective stories of the women and men in her family. The crucial narrative technique used by Kingston is talkstory, which derives from traditional Chinese storytelling as well as from Asian American immigrant lore, since the term itself originates from Hawaiian pidgin. Talk-story represents the way familial narratives are passed on from one generation to the other, typically through female relatives. Kingston associates talk-story and the legacy of her Chinese background with elements drawn from American classic authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne and William Carlos Williams. She also re-elaborates Chinese legends; most famously, the story of Fa Mulan. As a Chinese American woman writer, Kingston thus ultimately constructs a hybrid form of memoir, combining disparate motifs and influences.

The present research paper discusses Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior. Kingston being a Chinese American writer touches upon the predicaments of silenced women and her selected novel advocates for these silenced characters. The study investigates that where doe lie silence of chines-American immigrant and secondly silence of Chinese women in traditional Chinese society. Although there is the taboo "not tell" but Kingston manages to break the silence. She rewrites with the help of her experience and imaginative power and articulates the voiceless thoughts. In this respect Kingston herself realizes the importance of articulation from her own experience, besides "no name woman" she presents those characters who are capable to express their thoughts by articulation and among them brave orchid represents the strongest voice as her name itself suggests. This qualitative study implies feministic model of Madson and content analysis content technique and interprets data accordingly.

This study examines the concept of dis-ease and how it is represented in poetry after the emergence of COVID-19. It is based on how contemporary East African Poets use poetry as a medium to express the presence of disease and how the selected poets artistically convey its effect in society. This study focuses on three anthologies of poetry: Soaring above the Pandemic: Poetic Echoes from East Africa, Millennial Voices East African Poetry, and Musings during a time of Pandemic. The objectives of the study are: to investigate the concept of dis-ease in selected East African poems on COVID-19 and to interrogate language strategies that the poets use in the selected poems to represent dis-ease in Contemporary East African poems on Coronavirus. The study is guided by two theories which include: the theory of stylistics and sociological literary theory. The theory of stylistics pays close attention to both form and content of the poetry which is useful in the analysis of the selected poems, whilst sociological literary theory demonstrates how literature and society influence each other. The study is divided into four chapters: chapter one forms the background to the study, chapter two focuses on dis-ease in Soaring above the Pandemic: Echoes from East Africa. In chapter three, it examines the representation of Coronavirus in Millennial Voices East African Poetry and Musings during a time of Pandemic. The last chapter is dedicated to conclusion. In concluding this study, it is apparent that contemporary East African poems on COVID-19 represent dis-ease at a point of divergence and convergence in regards to the impact of Coronavirus to human beings and society. The interaction with the disease heightened mixed reactions: anxiety, fear and discomfort as well as hope in the midst of the pandemic.

This paper analyses the depiction of the main female protagonists of Catherine Temma Davidson’s novel The Priest Fainted (1998) in the context of the symbolic formation of the hybrid identity of the main female character and narrator which is close to Bill Ascroft’s concept of the transnation. The author of this paper analyses Davidson’s depiction of three generations of female protagonists with a Greek cultural background and the way they symbolically represent the transition from a traditional diasporic identity (the narrator’s grandmother), through multicultural and transnational identity (her mother) up to the identity close to the concept of the transnation as defined by Bill Aschroft (the narrator herself). Mulan is an ancient Chinese heroine. The story shows that she is the same as other women, having personal life, but also has a heart that loves her country and her parents. She always thinks about her family, society, dan country. This article was based on library research, using Mulan poem dan a folklore entitled Mulan Pergi Berperang as media to analyze Mulan’s image. It can be said that eventhough at that time there was no gender perspective concept, Mulan had been able  to replace her father to go to war. She gave a lot of contributions for her country, society, and family. Analysis represents that Mulan has three images, as a heroine, as a daughter for her family, and self-image or leader for the women. Having good character and spirit to love country, people, and family make her equal to men. And, it makes her respected by people in each generation.

Following the pervasive trend of globalization, cultural interaction between different nations becomes possible. This article aims to distinguish between the Chinese cuisines in U.S. society that have diverged origins: the modified Chinese food which was brought by massive immigration from the southeast coastal provinces in China in the late 19th century, and the franchised cuisine from China that recently settled in the market. The historical background relating to the on-time social movements and different motivations of these two cuisines will be delineated in this article to help explain the mechanism behind Chinese culinary industries' adaptation in the United States. It is argued that the Chinese cuisine brought by Cantonese immigrants undergoes cultural integration which drives spontaneous adaption of the cuisine to blend into the U.S. culture. On the contrary, the prevalence of industrialized Chinese cuisine is rather the result of a profit-driven mechanism.

This paper examines Chinese American writer Ha Jin's collection of short stories A Good Fall. The paper gives particular attention to the way in which Jin represents Chinese people's lives in an urban ethnic community in the United States. The paper is also concerned with the topic of Chinese people's migration that becomes an essential element in the formation of Chinese people's lives in the United States. With regard to this topic, the paper analyzes how Jin demystifies the 'American Dream' that has historically served as the most powerful driving force of Chinese people's migration to the United States. This study also helps to consider the significance of Jin's transition from a Chinese writer to a Chinese American one in his literary pursuits by relating A Good Fall to A Free life, both of which deal with similar topics.
