University of the Philippines Diliman

The first campus of the University of the Philippines, which was founded in 1908, was located in Ermita, Manila. Three decades later, its location in the rapidly urbanizing and politically volatile capital led university and government officials to move the university to Diliman in suburban Quezon City, a site that embodied the university town archetype. While the new campus conformed to the university town template, Quezon City’s income-poor communities proved significant in radicalizing students, thereby undermining the original intention behind Diliman. Attention to the peculiar historical geography of the main campus of the University of the Philippines has potential to serve as the start of a conversation on the socio-spatial relations between universities and Southeast Asian cities.

The intellectual impact of the so-called “globalization” undoubtedly affected the mindsets of researchers and scholars in the field of Political Science to work within the area of Comparative Politics and Government. This area offers a plethora of far-reaching, albeit complex and mind-boggling, issues and events that in themselves make compelling reasons for doing research. Under this area, a major electoral issue emerges, that is, legislative electoral contestation in “incomplete” regimes . The topic deals with the most common features of a rival-motivated legislative electoral contestation, which are electoral protest and electoral violence.

By applying New Regionalism Approach, this paper delves into a rather unexplored area of regionalism (higher education) in a less investigated region (Southeast Asia) and state (Philippines). It treads through a relatively recent terrain of bridge-building between higher education and regionalism. Through in-depth interviews and document analysis, the exploratory study investigates how ASEAN regionalism has influenced the cross-border research of a Philippine university. Examining cross-border research sheds light on the dynamics of ASEAN regionalism as research is considered crucial to the formation of a knowledge society, which, in turn, serves as a potent tool to pursue regional and national objectives. The findings of this study demonstrate that the ASEAN higher education regionalism offers vital mechanisms to enhance the university’s research performance and its overall competitiveness in an era of globalisation. However, in spite of these advantages, there are ideational, political and material challenges that pose limits to this potential. This paper argues that cross-border research has not yet been robustly activated as a mechanism for regional and national pursuits, and that the points of collaborations and contestations are still to be addressed adequately to maximise the promises and mitigate the perils of ASEAN higher education regionalism.

This study tested the universality hypothesis on facial expression judgment by applying cross-cultural agreement tests on Filipinos. The Facial Action Coding System constructed by Ekman and Friesen (1976) was used as basis for creating stimuli photos that 101 college student observers were made to identify. Contextualization for each emotion was also solicited from subjects to provide qualitative bases for their judgments. The results showed that for five of the six emotions studied, excepting fear, the majority of the observers judged the expressions as predicted. The judgment of happiness supplied the strongest evidence for universality, having the highest correctness rate and inter-observer agreement. There was also high agreement among observers and between Filipinos and other cultures about the most intense and second most intense emotion signaled by each stimulus for these five emotions. Going deeper to this information, the constitution continues to give in-depth parts to these pillars (arts, culture and sports) in Article XIV especially pertaining to Arts and Culture, and Sports (Sec. 14-19.) There is actually no doubt that the constitution in its context actually realize the significance of sports and the numerous cultural treasure that we have through nation building and development, coming from the book entitled of The Philippine Constitution (De Leon, 2008). If this was the intention of the current constitution of the republic, why is there even a notion for different groups that the arts, culture, and sports are not important especially in today’s world where globalization and open market is the main topic for all stakeholders of the state? The main reason that numerous article say is the budgeting process to the departments that handle the arts, culture and sports namely the NCCA and PSC, and the low response that it get from the constituents of the state. The main problem that this paper wants to solve is that of the importance of arts, culture, and sports to not just a developing country, but in particular to the Philippines.

Defining Filipinoness has been problematic throughout history. Previous studies have focused on the persistent impact of the colonial experience on Filipinos (Bernad, 1971; Constantino, 1977; Enriquez, 1992; Yacat, 2005). Some scholars have framed their understanding vis-a-vis the search for a national consciousness resulting in a unif ied Filipino identity (Anderson, 1983; Constantino, 1969). But in the age of globalization, statehood and nationhood have become questionable concepts (Adamson & Demetriou, 2007; Ahmad & Eijaz, 2011; Guehenno, 1995; Omae, 1995). Who has the Filipino become amid a modern-day diaspora? I propose an analysis of history not as archival and disconnected from the present but as part of an ongoing story of identity formation. Blends of starch/polyester have been of great interest in the development of biodegradable packaging. A method based on multiple responses optimisation (Desirability) was used to evaluate the properties of tensile strength, perforation force, elongation and seal strength of cassava starch/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) blown films produced via a one-step reactive extrusion using tartaric acid (TA) as a compatibiliser. Maximum results for all the properties were set as more desirable, with an optimal formulation being obtained which contained (55:45) starch/PBAT (88.2 wt. (%)), glycerol (11.0 wt. (%)) and TA (0.8 wt. (%)). Biodegradable plastic bags were produced using the film with this formulation, and analysed according to the standard method of the Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT). The bags exhibited a 45% failure rate in free-falling dart impact tests, a 10% of failure rate in dynamic load tests and no failure in static load tests. These results meet the specifications set by the standard. Thus, the biodegradable plastic bags fabricated with an optimised formulation could be useful as an alternative to those made from non-biodegradable materials if the nominal capacity declared for this material is considered.

The article contends that neither theory-building nor theorizing is an exclusive means of understanding the social in Philippine sociological discourse. Pagdadalumat as a homegrown reflexive inquiry proves to be more proficient and powerful an approach in making sense of the foundational principles of the discipline. Henceforth, the article examines the two implicated issues of doing pagdadalumat in the production of sociological knowledge in the Philippines viz. (i) the concept of kapwa as manifestation of the nexus of the Self and Other (ii) and the epistemological affordances of pagdadalumat versus the rigid evidence-seeking temperament of scientif ic inquiry. At the end, an outline of a sociological model of pagdadalumat is presented—pakiramdaman—anchored on an indigenous communicative practice (pakikipagtalastasan) using four (4) Filipino social constructs—lapit, galang, hiya, lusot—and their corresponding indicators—relasyon, kapwa, sitwasyon, kahihinatnan.

The feeding behavior, digestive efficiency, growth, and survival of post-larval abalone Haliotis asinina fed with 5 species of locally isolated benthic diatom strains (Navicula mollis, N. ramosissima, Stauroneis sp., Pleurosigma sp., and Cocconeis sp.) were examined in the laboratory. Two 15-day feeding trials using 1 mm post-larvae were conducted. No significant differences were observed in sizes of post-larval abalone after 15 days in all diatom treatments (P>0.05). However, in both trials, Cocconeis sp. resulted in high survival rates (88.9±5.6% and 80.0±20.0% for Trials 1 and 2, respectively). Cocconeis sp. was efficiently digested by post-larval abalone, with most of the cells being ruptured during ingestion and/or passage through the gut. One diatom strain, Pleurosigma sp., resulted to a high survival but produced the slowest growth rate (<10 ìm.d-1 SL). It was probably not ingested easily during the experiment due to its large size or mobility. For the other diatom strains, N. mollis and N. ramosissima, most cells passed through the gut with the cells left intact. Stauroneis sp. is highly digestible, but did not result to high survival, although the remaining live post-larval abalone fed on this diatom as well as on N. mollis grew faster during the second week of both feeding trials. N. ramosissima resulted to poorest survival rate (<10%) due to its poor digestibility. Only Cocconeis sp. showed a fairly high growth rate, digestion efficiency, and survival rate. N. mollis which gave a fairly high survival rate and Stauroneis may be added towards the later stages of post-larval rearing as well as other large diatoms. The digestion efficiency of diatom strains is considered an important factor determining its dietary value, but other factors may also be important such as volume contents, biochemical composition, and other physical characteristics.

The study looked into how the University of the Philippines School of Library and Information Studies (UP SLIS), its faculty members, and the researcher executed their respective agencies in designing, developing, and implementing LIS 10 Information and Society as a general education (GE) course in UP Diliman. It utilized the structure-agency framework to examine the limitations set by structures the manner by which the agents exercised their agencies subject to such limits. The study is qualitative, with autoethnography as the primary method of inquiry. The researcher created a narrative to uncover knowledge and insight to answer the research questions. Related activities include analysis of documents, recollection of personal experiences, and documentation of perspectives and pertinent events. The study revealed that UP SLIS, in an exercise of its agency as an academic degree-granting unit, along with its various attributes and traits, took the opportunity to propose a GE course.  The UP SLIS Faculty exercised its agency by unifying efforts to design a GE course on information issues. The faculty in charge of implementing the course was pivotal in successfully achieving the course outcomes and improving the overall image of the LIS 10 and UP SLIS. With the 2017 UP System GE Framework and the UP Diliman GE requirements as structures, all agents effectively exercised their agencies to ensure that the course satisfied the University policies and contributed to educating intellectually and morally able citizens that are responsible in their information engagements.

Single elderly women or " spinsters " have been perceived as having negative attributes such as undesirable, man-hater or infertile. In the Philippine context, the equivalent term is " matandang dalaga " which according to sources can mean " womanhood partially fulfilled ". This study is focused on the present condition of Filipino Single Elderly Women (FSEW) through recounting their life experiences regarding their self, family, career, social relationships, health, and spirituality. Researchers interviewed 30 FSEW living in Metro Manila, Philippines. This comprised of 15 respondents living in their own homes and 15 respondents in an institution. Similarities and differences in responses between FSEW in Homes and in Institution were found. Both respondents from Homes and Institution reported being generally satisfied with their present condition. There were differences in their experiences brought about by their individual social factors. In the concept of singlehood, a few mentioned experiences related to their status as a single elderly woman. It was found that age-appropriate activities, health and nutritional programs could be developed to help FSEW cope with aging. In addition, these programs can help them gain a positive outlook about themselves and in life. Researchers highly recommend that the FSEW would be given enough care and support by their family and friends even if they were already inside the institution. Improving the life aspects of the FSEW can help them gain more positive life experiences.

The field of Business Ethics has an important role to play in identifying and establishing ethical parameters for business activities. Ethics professors have the continued challenge of being able to deliver ethics and morality teachings in the classroom. One topic in the area of business ethics and social enterprise that has begun hogging the pages of business and social responsibility research articles is the field of ethical banking. The ethical-social nature of the mission of ethical banks makes for an interesting discussion piece and scenario for a case-based teaching of business ethics. This paper presents the case of showing ethical banks as vignette in finance and ethics classes at the University of the Philippines, aimed at making students aware that it is possible for businessmen to be socially and ethically oriented and at the same time keep in mind the need for financial sustainability. The methodology involved content analysis and tests of differences based on a survey of 141 undergraduate business students. Results show overwhelming positive response to the concept of the ethical bank. 96% of the student respondents were in admiration of the ethical raison detre of ethical banks and 93% opined that it pays to be ethical. There was no difference between male and female respondents in opining that it pays to be ethical. Overall, results corroborate the mounting evidence that there is an ever greater awareness of the ethical responsibilities of business and discernment of the form that ethics can take in specific enterprises.    

Safety and security issues beset the people who study, work and live in U.P. Diliman, being a university surrounded by an urban jungle. While ever-present, such issues are rarely discussed by the Isko and Iska until an incident puts such issues to the limelight. From physical ones, such as fire, crime, and natural disasters, to social ones, such as mental health issues and gender-related violence and discrimination, there are a lot of hazards and risks being faced by the Iskolar ng Bayan in their stay in the university.

This paper seeks to provide information of hazards and risks and explore opportunities for student-led mitigation and prevention activities. It will weave through the available information to help us come to an understanding of our current safety and security situation.

TITLE INTEGRATING THE RA 9262 (ANTI-VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMENAND THEIR CHILDREN ACT OF 2004) IN LITERATURE VIA THE MOVIE ENOUGH

This study tried out various teaching techniques in integrating RA 9262 in literature through the use of film. It identified the universal values/disvalues found in the film as reflected in the students’ responses in the comprehension test administered. It also pointed RA 9262 provisions reflected in the students’ concepts in their oral participation and written outputs; determined the literariness of the film; was elicited different attitudes toward violence against women and respect to women as shaped by the film through their responses; and ascertained the most practicable teaching technique in integrating RA 9262 in literature via the movie Enough.
This study corroborated Spiro’s cognitive flexibility Theory, Ausubel’s meaningful verbal learning theory, Aristotle’s mimetic theory, Kate Millet’s theory of feminism and social politics, and Mezirow’s transformational theory. Four World Literature classes with more or less similar characteristics participated in this study. The discussion of Paulette Kelly’s I Got Flowers Today took place during the first session while the viewing of the film Enough and discussion of the film followed to enrich and bolster students’ concepts and awareness on violence against women and to introduce RA 9262 provisions where various teaching techniques were employed. Each literature class was assigned to a particular teaching technique, to wit: Completing the Picture for BEEd 2a, Quote Unquote for BEEd 2b, Giving Moral for BSEd 2a, and Star Diagram for BSEd 2b. The universal values/disvalues and students’ attitudes toward violence against women and respect to women were lifted from the students’ oral and written responses. The researchers plotted literary concepts evident in the film’s selected scenarios. In determining the most practicable teaching technique, the researchers considered two significant factors – the actual performance of the students in the classroom discussion and their responses in the comprehension test.
The students’ responses revealed 30 values and 24 disvalues amassed from the actions of the characters in the film. The following values surfaced from the students’ responses: courage/self-esteem, generosity, hospitality, kindness, self-preservation, cleverness, trustworthiness, helpfulness, empathy, wit, friendship, fearlessness, approachability, family-oriented, sympathy, love, concern, strong will, honesty, faithfulness, hard-work, patience, righteousness, assertiveness, perseverance, protection, determination, support, responsibility, and willingness to sacrifice.
On the other hand, the following disvalues surfaced from the film: cruelty, insensitiveness, unfaithfulness, treachery, abusiveness, brutality, inferiority, harshness, lust, dishonesty, arrogance, unlawfulness, greediness, selfishness, violence, immorality, possessiveness, hypocrisy, irresponsibility, disrespect, cowardice, despotism, close-mindedness, and self-centeredness.
The film Enough presented eight provisions from RA 9262 reflected in students’ concepts which centered on the acts of violence against women tarnishing women’s rights and dignity.

The following are literary concepts evidenced in the film, to wit: literature is languages, imitation, value-laden, imagination, a product of a social construct, and has organic unity.
There were 25 attitudes toward violence against women and respect to womenwhich surfaced, 11 of which are what initiate the acts, seven tell about the results from or effects of violence against women, and another seven exemplify respect to women.
Among the teaching techniques, Quote Unquote was determined as the most practicable in integrating the RA 9262 in literature via the film Enough. Tailed its lead are:Completing the Picture, Star Diagram and Giving Moral.
With the findings, it can be viewed that RA 9262 can be integrated in a literature course to awaken students’ minds on the prevalent issues on violating women’s rights and dignity. The discussion of Paulette Kelly’s I Got Flowers Today reinforced by the viewing of Enougheduced values and disvalues, issues on the violation of women’s rights and dignity, attitudes toward violence against women and students’ perception with regard respect to women. The literary concepts viewed from Enough confirmed that film aside from print literature is an effective instructional material to teach and instill values among students, thus, its use is encouraged and recognized.

For not only is it about the book, but it promises to reveal much of what is involved in a “traditional” reading of the book. In fact, the past layers of my own thinking are inscribed in Guerrero’s review, and the present reply offers me an opportunity to discuss these “familiar” layers in relation to her particular criticisms." Phytoplankton in Coron Bay of the Calamianes Islands, Palawan were investigated from 27-29 May2004. Samples were collected from 33 stations by filtering five 10 L buckets of surface water through a net with a 20 µm mesh bag. The phytoplankton consisted of four major groups. Diatoms, showed the highest mean density of 1432.9 ind•L -1 . Silicoflagellates comprised the next most abundant group with a mean density of 132.3 ind•L -1 . Dinoflagellates followed with a mean density of 94.8 ind•L -1 , while the cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) had a mean density of 19.4 ind•L -1 . The top three diatoms were Chaetoceros , Bacteriastrum and Coscinodiscus . The genus Peridinium was the most abundant dinoflagellate, while Tintinnopsis dominated the silicoflagellates. Among the cyanophytes, Trichodesmium showed the highest density. High phytoplankton concentrations were observed in the vicinity of a pearl farm and in areas adjacent to mangrove forests. The University of the Philippines Diliman is a campus embodied by more than 40,000 students, employees, residents, and guests every day. Walking is one of the primary modes of transportation of people, particularly the students, in traveling from buildings to buildings, in order to attend their respective classes, work, and other businesses. This means that pedestrian facilities play a vital role inside the campus. This research evaluated these facilities through a proposed method that was developed by adapting various methodologies. The proposed method and design standards adapted and integrated mainly three different methods, namely Gloria P. Gerilla et.al.'s -Proposed Level of Service Standards for Walkways in Metro Manila‖, Linda Dixon's -Gainsville Pedestrian LOS Performance Measures‖, and Highway Capacity Manual LOS Standards. The methodology started with assigning respective weights or standard s cores to the several criteria that determine the level of service of the pedestrian facilities. These criteria, which were mainly based on Gerilla et. al.'s method, are namely the Level of Congestion, Safety, Convenience, Comfort, Continuity, and System Coherence. Also based on Gerilla, the major criteria were assigned with respective subfactor/s characterizing them into further detail. The assigning of respective weights per sub-factor was in accordance to the pedestrians' preferences, which were determined through written surveys. In assessing each of the sub-factors, the proposed method adapted Dixon's system of scoring, wherein criteria per sub-factor were set, in order for a facility to gain particular number of points. The researchers went on field surveys in order to evaluate the present condition of the facilities and to score them based on the set of criteria. The evaluation of the Level of Congestion, one of the six major factors, was specifically in accordance to t he HCM standards. Various statistical methods were employed to calibrate the weighted factors and to come up with a table that assigns the LOS A to F rating with respective ranges of points. The LOS rating of each of the facilities was then obtained by summing up the points gained per sub-factor. The summation of points should have then been falling under one of the LOS ratings' range of scores. The study focused on the evaluation of the commonly used walkways, sidewalks, trails, and shoulders in the campus. The results showed that the LOS of selected pedestrian facilities inside the campus typically ranges from LOS B and LOS C. The facilities that did not meet the ideal standard of LOS A are recommended to be improved. Examples of areas for improvement include physical conditions like surface conditions, inadequate lighting, and others. In addition, the researchers recommend the general flow of the methodology utilized in this study, to be used by other transportation and urban planners in other places in the country. Furthermore, LOS assessment of other pedestrian facilities existing in the study area such as crosswalks, and the rest of the facilities that were not evaluated is suggested to be conducted, using the proposed standards.

In early February 1971, students at UP Diliman erected barricades, fought off the military, and briefly established the “Diliman Commune.” Using material produced by the “communards” themselves, along with contemporary press reports, I reconstruct the dramatic narrative of the commune and debunk two prominent myths: that it was a spontaneous uprising and that it was an isolated event. The commune was a part of a widely coordinated set of barricades raised by the radical groups Kabataang Makabayan (KM) and Samahan ng Demokratikong Kabataan (SDK) in service, in the final analysis, to the political interests of their ruling class allies in an election year.

This is an article I contributed to the festschrift "A Theology of the Spirit in Doctrine and Demonstration: Essays in Honor of Wonsuk and Julie Ma, which we just published at APTS Press. This essays attempts to answer the question "What do Filipinos think when we say to them 'Be Filled with the Spirit!'" How do they understand this within their worldview? To become spirit possessed is nothing new as it occurs in spiritist's healing session or by fortunetellers and like. Is this the same thing? In what way is it similar? In what way is it different? The subjects of migration and aging have both attracted scholarly attention from various disciplines, using a wide range of approaches and strategies. The intricacies of the nexus between migration and aging, however, are only now starting to be explored. This paper seeks to contribute towards an exploration of the intersection of aging and migration in the lives of Filipinas using feminist psychology and Sikolohiyang Pilipino (indigenous Filipino psychology, or SP) as methodological frameworks. Social theory today is undergoing a crisis. This crisis is brought about by the postmodern turn in social theory. In this essay postmodernism is defined both as a cultural movement and as the social condition of late capitalism. This paper deals with the restructuring of sociological theory as a result of this postmodern turn. Then, the implications of postmodern theory are discussed in relation to the future of doing a postcolonial sociology in the Philippines.

Nigeria, the world's most populous black nation, faces a major crisis in its federal structure and democratic experience. Despite the allusion to democratic governance of the country, the political class, especially elected state governors, and the bureaucratic elite have turned autocratic, refusing to obey the Constitution which demands compulsory elections into the local government administration, siphoning the statutory allocation to the councils from the Federation Account, generating instability in the polity, and arresting the socioeconomic development at the grassroots. This paper puts in perspective the legitimacy crisis and elite conspiracy in the local government council administration, which has spread rural poverty and discontentment among the citizenry, and recommends concrete steps to arrest the calamitous drift.

There is a growing trend in higher education ensuring students’ holistic growth by offering college credit once a student can demonstrate competence. Higher education institutions are now trying to develop students through programs like University of the Philippines’ Revitalized General Education Program (RGEP). These general education courses provide students avenues for improving their core competencies their majors, to some extent, cannot provide. On the other hand, factors like gender and academic discipline affect the perception of students’ core competencies due to the circumstances that they present, i.e. stereotyping and discrimination. This research paper aims to see if such factors affect the perception of University of the Philippines Diliman freshman students’ core competencies. The research suggests that the freshmen’s competencies are homogenous and not significantly affected by the factors aforementioned. This paper will redound to the academe and university administrators as this presents conditions that reflect how effective the programs higher education institutions are pursuing.

Philippine political development has been shaped by its colonial history and postcolonial elitist political system. As the country is ushered into the 21st century, the problems of underdevelopment remain. These problems are rooted on the unresolved question of nationhood, skewed concept of public service, alienated political system, and ambivalent political culture. These problems contributed significantly to the weakness of the country's political and economic institutions. If national development has to transpire, the spirit of nationalism subdued by long periods of colonialism must be revived, the political system must be democratized, and an ethic-oriented politics towards the well-being of the people must emerge. Through these efforts, Philippine sovereignty can be defended, foreign intervention can be curtailed, national honor and pride can be redeemed, and a better society for the coming generations can be created.

Public education in the Philippines is a colonial legacy of American occupation. This article examines the struggles in public higher education within the context of its colonial function as a tool for imperialist control in the “post-colonial era.” US imperialism’s hegemony partly depended on the establishment of key educational institutions. The founding of the University of the Philippines (UP) in 1908 guaranteed the production of Filipino bureaucrats and technocrats who will govern the US-installed Philippine Republic. Nationalist historian Renato Constantino rightly refers to this colonial legacy as a “continuing past.” Focusing on the UP and its strategic emplacement in the postcolony, this presentation presents the challenges against this very emplacement. We are calling this the struggle between postcolonial education and transfomative education. Post in this context does not refer to a moment in linear history. Rather, it refers to a transhistorical moment of crisis largely defined by global conditions of unequal development. This article looks at contemporary Union, teachers organizations and student struggles in the university to shed light on the following themes: How is the larger anti-colonial struggle articulated in union struggles for benefits, higher pay, regularization of work? How does the historic role of the University of the Philippines in fighting clerico-fascisim in the 60s and Martial Law in the 70s impact on contemporary alliances in University formed in response to human rights violations? How do struggles for economic and political rights become the focus and locus of the struggle for transformative education?

On the surface it would seem that the JCU and UP history departments stood to each other as First World to Third World. When I was at JCU from 1986 to 1995, my department’s wealth and resources were manifested in an awesome thesis cabinet. Its stability was evidenced by the steady growth in staff and student numbers, research outputs, and profitable ventures under the leadership of Professor Dalton.  What a difference this was from my tenure in the UP from 1977 to 1985, where history was a battleground of contending views about how the past works in the present. The ups-and-downs of funding and political shifts could be gleaned from the department’s messy and nondescript “thesis cabinet.” But, while this might reflect a certain lack of institutional and disciplinal maturity (as some have argued), it can also be thought of as another way in which history functions in the life of a nation.

Existing for more than 3 decades here in UPV, Sandigan ng Mag-aaral at Sambayanan-UPV and Partido sang Mainuswagong Bumulutho, have played a significant role in moulding the current political system here in our institution. This is evident to all their contributions and influences found not only within the corridors of this university but also within the minds of every Iskolar ng Bayan. The existence of Samasa-upv and PMB has been one of the reasons of UPV's best and worst. Nevertheless, they have kept their good status as two giant political institutions here in UPV. Their long existence have proven how durable they are, but is this enough reason to maintain their existence in UPV's political system? Or are there other reasons that could be used against these political parties? For more than 30 years, both parties have proven themselves as a good tool in uniting a diverse group of people, being their very representative in different university affairs, and making this large majority involve in different aspects of university life. In fact, both parties have conducted several mass integration programs for their members, so as to familiarize them to different social structures and the issues arising therein. Both have lead, sponsored, hosted and conducted most of the activities in the university. These political parties have pre-established constitutions and have been consistent to their views and opinions on different social and university issues. They have provided a good reputation in having good young leaders elected in a position. Most of the leaders who are currently in position, whether these organizations that they were elected are academic, non-academic or even in our student councils, are products of these political parties. These reputation is still existent due to their extensive deliberations of their prospective candidates that they'll be endorsing for a certain position. Another apparent reason for their good reputation in leader-making is the fact that they are conducting several leadership trainings and programs to prepare their members to a greater cause of leading their fellow Iskos through taking part in a number of academic and non-academic organizations. Being a political party, both have provided their prospected candidates with proper resources and publicity needed during campaign period. Thus, giving at least a chance to the less privilege students wanting political positions in different organizations. These political parties really made clear to us their importance in making young leaders and in instituting the colourful political system in UPV. On the other hand, their existence was challenged by several controversies that they both face. The field of Business Ethics has an important role to play in identifying and establishing ethical parameters for business activities. Ethics professors have the continued challenge of being able to deliver ethics and morality teachings in the classroom. One topic in the area of business ethics and social enterprise that has begun hogging the pages of business and social responsibility research articles is the field of ethical banking. The ethical-social nature of the mission of ethical banks makes for an interesting discussion piece and scenario for a case-based teaching of business ethics. This paper presents the case of showing ethical banks as vignette in finance and ethics classes at the University of the Philippines, aimed at making students aware that it is possible for businessmen to be socially and ethically oriented and at the same time keep in mind the need for financial sustainability. The methodology involved content analysis and tests of differences based on a survey of 141 undergraduate business students. Results show overwhelming positive response to the concept of the ethical bank. 96% of the student respondents were in admiration of the ethical raison detre of ethical banks and 93% opined that it pays to be ethical. There was no difference between male and female respondents in opining that it pays to be ethical. Overall, results corroborate the mounting evidence that there is an ever greater awareness of the ethical responsibilities of business and discernment of the form that ethics can take in specific enterprises.
