The paper reviews work on informal technical help giving between colleagues. It concentrates on the process of how colleagues help each other to use a computer application to achieve a specific work task, contrasting this with the focus of much prior work on surrounding issues like the choice of whom to ask, information re-use and the larger work context of encouragement or otherwise of such learning. By an analysis of the literature and a study of office activity, some strengths and weaknesses of the method are identified. The difficulties of talking about the process of performing graphical user interface actions are explored. Various design implications for functionalities to improve the efficiency of informal help giving are explored. A consideration of informal learning can help in designing more effective, learnable, robust and acceptable CSCW systems. It also provides a different perspective on interface design as an exploration of features to support human–human interaction, using the computer screen as a shared resource to support this. In this way CSCW research may contribute to HCI research, since during such help giving, all computer systems are at least temporarily collaborative applications.

Dynamically changing background ("dynamic background") still presents a great challenge to many motion-based video surveillance systems. In the context of event detection, it is a major source of false alarms. There is a strong need from the security industry either to detect and suppress these false alarms, or dampen the effects of background changes, so as to increase the sensitivity to meaningful events of interest. In this paper, we restrict our focus to one of the most common causes of dynamic background changes: that of swaying tree branches and their shadows under windy conditions. Considering the ultimate goal in a video analytics pipeline, we formulate a new dynamic background detection problem as a signal processing alternative to the previously described but unreliable computer vision-based approaches. Within this new framework, we directly reduce the number of false alarms by testing if the detected events are due to characteristic background motions. In addition, we introduce a new dataset suitable for the evaluation of dynamic background detection. It consists of real-world events detected by a commercial surveillance system from two static surveillance cameras. The research question we address is whether dynamic background can be detected reliably and efficiently using simple motion features and in the presence of similar but meaningful events such as loitering. Inspired by the tree aerodynamics theory, we propose a novel method named local variation persistence (LVP), that captures the key characteristics of swaying motions. The method is posed as a convex optimization problem whose variable is the local variation. We derive a computationally efficient algorithm for solving the optimization problem, the solution of which is then used to form a powerful detection statistic. On our newly collected dataset, we demonstrate that the proposed LVP achieves excellent detection results and outperforms the best alternative adapted from existing art in the dynamic background literature.

Collaborative based recommendation techniques are used in E-commerce nowadays to predict the ratings of user more accurately as possible. Measuring user similarity based on user ratings leads to inaccurate results. Now we borrow the idea of measuring similarity based on neighbors of users not based on ratings and cluster the items in to item groups and forming user groups corresponding to each item group then find the user preference based on neighbor list

Computers are an integral part of day to day activities in engineering design and engineers have utilised various applications to assist them improve their design. Although computers are used to model a variety of engineering activities, currently the main focus of computer applications are areas with well defined rules. Activities related to the conceptual stage of the design process are generally untouched by computers.Artificial neural networks (ANN) have recently been widely used to model some of the human activities in many areas of science and engineering. Early applications of NN in civil engineering occurred the late eighties. One of the distinct characteristics of the ANN is its ability to learn from experience and examples and then to adapt with changing situations. Engineers often deal with incomplete and noisy data, which is one area where NN are most applicable. This is particularly the case at the conceptual stage of the design process.This paper presents practical guidelines for designing ANN for engineering applications.A brief introduction to NN is given; major aspects of three types of NN, multi-layer perceptron (MLP), radial basis network (RBF) and normalised RBF (NRBF) are discussed; new methods for selection and normalisation of training data are introduced and a practical example of a reinforced concrete slab design is presented.

This survey paper encapsulates the various deep learning algorithms employed on video data. Scarce of research has been conducted for classification, clustering and tagging the videos in social networks such as YouTube, Facebook. Instead reading we prefer to watch, hence video huddling is obligatory. The analysis and review of deep learning models for video are explained in this paper. Deep learning is merely in its infancy and, in the epochs to come, will transmute the public. Also, this article discusses the efficiency of deep learning models and concludes with thoughts on future augmentation in video clustering.

The goal of the present research is the distortional-global (D-G) buckling interaction of cold-formed steel (CFS) lipped channel (LC) columns, in its buckling, structural behavior and strength nature. Some studies on this topic have been conducted in the literature, however, the D-G interaction is not well known and needs more attention.
For an elastic buckling analysis, a software entitled FStr Computer Application Program is developed. The application is based on the Finite Strip Method, mainly focused in a simple and accessible interface. The FStr program generates the modal shapes and insert as initial geometric imperfections in the finite element software ANSYS, in order to perform a geometric and material nonlinear analysis. Both, the FStr program and the finite element model are validated with available numerical examples and laboratory tests from the literature. Moreover, for the structural behavior and column strength, it is carried out stability paths from previous nonlinear analysis, for different combination of initial geometric imperfection of global and distortional modes. The buckling mode combination as initial geometric imperfection helps to understand the D-G buckling interaction, which is difficult to predict with a simple elastic buckling analysis. The results of the initial imperfection combination have shown that, for high yielding steel, the global initial geometric imperfection provides the most detrimental ultimate load. Additionally, a parametric study varying the column’s length have shown that the nominal axial strength for global buckling equation, already in the standards, is enough to cover the DG coupled phenomenon.

Computer audio-recorded interviewing (CARI) is coming into widespread use in survey research, because it allows a data collection manager to listen to the exact circumstances of how questions were asked and answered during the interview, a more powerful approach than any prior indirect quality control method. Yet design can be complex when planning an integrated system for capturing and reviewing audio recordings from interviews. This paper looks explores a part of the operational world of survey research from the eye of the system developer, offering context for those unfamiliar with survey research. Discussion focuses on benefits, requirements, user needs, system design challenges and interface options. "

Women Security is a major concern in the current scenario and this Android Application for the Safety of Women tries to prevent the threats that might be occuring to women. The app can be activated by a single click, whenever need arises to alert the people associated with the woman. A single click on this app identifies the location of place through GPS and sends a message comprising this location URL to the registered contacts to help the one in dangerous situations. Continuous location tracking information via SMS helps to find the location of the victim quickly and she can be rescued safely.

Portfolio optimization is to build your portfolio in such a way that you maximize potential returns from investments while still not exceeding the amount of risk you’re willing to carry. Creating a balanced portfolio with many different investments, such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc., is the best way to spread out assets to maintain a riskto-reward ratio. The portfolio optimization model has limited impact in practice due to estimation issues when applied with real data. To address this, we adapt two machine learning methods, regularization and cross-validation, for portfolio optimization. First, we introduce performance-based regularization (PBR), where the idea is to constrain the sample variances of the estimated portfolio risk and return, which steers the solution towards one associated with less estimation error in the performance. We consider PBR for both mean-variance and mean-CVaR problems. For the mean-variance problem, PBR introduces a quartic polynomial constraint, for which we make two convex approximations: one based on rank-1 approximation and another based on a convex quadratic approximation
