Belief in the existence of supernatural powers and day-to-day unexplainable experiences has led the Nyishis into believing in other than the material visible world i.e. in the invisible spiritual world or supernatural power. Generally, the people are found to establish a close relationship with the spiritual world either by controlling or overpowering the spirit by enchanting or practicing some techniques and canalising the power or by offering ritual or worship to propitiate the supernatural power for acquisition of the thing or object desired. However, nowadays, there are clear indications that the Christian religious ideas have penetrated into the traditional religion of the people in the Nyishi villages. However, there are still many who retain their traditional religious beliefs and ritual practices which are altogether free from Christian influence. The Nyishis believes in the existence of a number of uyub, the spirits that there are in the jungles, on the lofty hills, on the top of huge or giant trees call Sangrik Sangney (Banyan tree), in rivers, and inside and outside the houses and these spirits often hurt human beings. Most of the Uyub are malevolent in character and cause harm to the human beings.

The book of Deuteronomy provides a number of valuable and unique insights into early Israelite perspectives on the nature of God, his relationship to other divine beings, and the diachronic development of both. For example, Deut 32:8–9, as found in 4QDeutj, attests to a likely early distinction between Yahweh and Elyon and presents the latter as the overseer of the gods of the several nations of the earth. Deut 4:19 represents a later recasting of the relationship of Elyon (now identified with Yahweh) with those deities (now represented astrally). Multiple historical layers and theologies are represented.

LXX Deuteronomy redefines and harmonizes the nature of God and his relationship to the deities of the surrounding nations. Whether as the result of dynamic equivalence, translator exegesis, or a variant Vorlage, the perspective offered is one of the earliest of developing Hellenistic-Jewish monotheism. The unique nature of Deuteronomy’s references to other deities provides a rich backdrop against which to read the Greek translation. This paper will examine the view of divinity presented in LXX Deuteronomy and evaluate its relationship to that of the Hebrew text as it has been preserved to us. It will then discuss the implications of its divergences for the study of monotheism in the Hellenistic Period.

This essay will examine some observations related to that perspective which arise from a comparison of the Greek translation to the Hebrew. It will first discuss deity in the Hebrew Bible in general, and Deuteronomy more specifically.

INTRODUCTION Spirituality in the context of work is increasingly gaining an importance in business and management research (Doran and Natale, 2011; Kutcher et al., 2010). This requires questioning the meanings and practice of spirituality in organizations. We contribute to the understanding of spirituality at work and in organizations by answering three main questions. These are: 1) What is spirituality?; 2) What is workplace spirituality?; and 3) Is the spiritual compatible with work organizations?.Our search for answers to these three questions has led us to a complex picture. Our chapter is structured to respond to these three questions in this same order. Our findings reveal three broad categories of spirituality. First, there are those authors whom we broadly put into the palliative category of spirituality. Originally, when ritual was still part of everyday life and everybody talked to gods and goddesses all the time, we spoke to them in everyday words. As time went on and priests assumed more power, however, exalted language and fulsome invocations arose, and pretty soon only the High Priest could speak to God Most High. We common folks were allowed to pray, of course, but the important prayers were uttered by the priests.

During the European Renaissance and all the way up to the 19th-century occult revival, it was thought that the gods spoke Hebrew and Latin. Ceremonial magicians wrote rituals in these languages or made up other highly esoteric languages like crypto-Egyptian, quasi-Sanskrit, and Enochian (the “angelic language” of the Elizabethan Dr. Dee). If you read books on high occultism, you’ll see scripts in these languages. Trying to pronounce the words can be like trying to unscrew the inscrutable.

Das British Museum beherbergt eine Sammlung von 143 Zauberschalen, die keineswegs zu den größten öffentlichen Sammlungen zählt. Das University of Pennsylvania Museum verzeichnet 260 Objekte, deren Schwestersammlung, die Frau Professor Hilprecht-Sammlung, Jena 69 Schalen. Im Vorderasiatischen Museum Berlin sind ca. 161 Nummern registriert. Die Schalen des Baghdad Museum/Iraq gehen in die Hunderte, doch liegen über den genauen Umfang mir keine exakteren Daten vor. Recht bescheiden ist die Kollektion des Louvre mit 22 Exemplaren, wie anscheinend auch die des Istanbuler Museums mit ca. 20, oder des Oriental Institute Museum Chicago mit 30 aufbewahrten Schalen. Auch existieren zahlreiche kleine öffentliche Sammlungen, insbesondere in den Vereinigten Staaten. Was die Sammlung des British Museum jedoch neben der Baghdad-Sammlung attraktiver macht, ist, daß hier diverses Textmaterial unterschiedlicher Provenienz vorliegt, das wenigstens teilweise aus gesicherten Grabungen stammt oder mit zuverlässigeren Funddaten aufwarten kann. Die Sammlungen in Philadelphia, Jena, Istanbul und Chicago beschränken sich vorwiegend auf einen Fundort, das zentralbabylonische Nippur. Berlin hingegen besteht aus einer Ankaufsammlung mit ca. 61 Exemplaren, der Rest ist Teil der Babylon-Borsippa Kollektion. Innerhalb der Bristish Museum Kollektion existiert eine größere Gruppe, die bereits in den achtziger Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts registriert wurde, aber nicht weiter zugeordnet werden konnte. Ihr Inhalt legt nahe, daß sie aus Kutha stammen. Sicher zu Kutha zu zählen sind mandäische Schalen der Rassam Grabung mit dem Archiv des Abdrahman bar Mišoy und der Bašniday bat Šahafrid. Das British Museum besitzt dazu eine beachtliche Sammlung von mandäischen Metallamuletten, die textliche Überschneidungen mit Zauberschalen aufweisen. Die Rezensentin hatte Gelegenheit, parallel zur Aufnahme der mandäischen Bleirollen auch die Schalen-Kollektion des British Museum kursorisch zu studieren.

In advocating peace as an important component of human geography's collective praxis, with War and pieces (Springer 2013) I sought to position anarchism as an ethical philosophy of nonviolence and the absolute rejection of war. Nick Megoran (2013) responded to my article by largely ignoring my substantive critique of the divisiveness, or fragmentary pieces, that religion produces in its organized contemporary practice, and instead prioritizes his own Christian perspective. He argues that I treat anarchism and Christianity as mutually exclusive, that I am negligent of the tradition of Christian anarchism, that I treat religion as a monolithic and transhistorical category, and in making a transcendental argument where nonviolence only becomes possible through Jesus Christ, he assumes that atheism is tantamount to nihilism. Contra Megoran's claims, I never denied the existence of Christian anarchism, but nor was it my intention to offer a genealogy. Instead my focus in War and pieces was on the intractable hierarchies embedded within organized religion, where I actually make space for spiritual approaches to anarchism. In this article, I respond to Megoran by contending that the emancipatory struggle for peace must be immanent, which further advances my conceptualization of an integral anarchism. I do this by drawing a firm distinction between spirituality and religion, where the former is considered as the search for 'the sacred' with respect to personal well-being and fulfillment, while the latter is related to bondage by way of its own etymology. I also critique the notion that atheism is ipso facto an acceptance of nihilism and seek to draw attention to the intersections between atheism, spirituality, and mutual aid as part of my integral approach to anarchism.

Mit der fortschreitenden Aufarbeitung der Sammlung mandäischer Bleirollen des Department of Western Asiatic Antiquities des British Museum und der zahlreichen jüdischen babylonisch-aramäischen und mandäischen Zauberschalen, die sich in den größeren Kollektionen wie Philadelphia, Paris, Cambridge, Oxford oder London, aber auch in Jena, sowie in diversen, teilweise umfangreichen Privatsammlungen befinden, wächst auch die Zahl der aus dem Iran und aus Mesoptamien stammenden Dämonennamen, die bisher kaum oder überhaupt nicht bekannt waren. Herkunft, Etymologie und Funktion vieler dieser Dämonen sind dunkel. Die wissenschaftliche Untersuchung steht zumeist noch in den Anfängen. Eine der wenigen Ausnahmen bildete eine Studie von Sh. Shaked 1985. Er beleuchtete in einem grundlegenden Aufsatz innerhalb der Festschrift für Mary Boyce den iranischen Hintergrund einiger Dämonennamen, die in babylonisch-jüdisch-aramäischen Zauberschalen und ähnlichen mandäischen Texten begegnen (Shaked 1985:520–22). Ausführliche Dämonenlisten, die sich vor allem auf den mandäischen Bleirollen, in Auszügen aber auch auf Zauberschalen finden, dürften der Forschung eine oft völlig neue Grundlage liefern (siehe demnächst Müller-Kessler 1997). Vielfach sind die Eigennamen dieser Texte in den Abschriften entstellt. Einige begegnen mehrfach und erlauben dann wenigstens die Etablierung der korrekten Schreibweise. Zumeist scheint es sich bei diesen Dämonen nicht um Phantasiebezeichnungen zuhandeln. Eine Vielzahl von ihnen scheint auf ehemalige Gottheiten oder kontemporäre Gottheiten, und göttliche Wesen und Dämonen anderer Kulturkreise und Religionen zurückzugehen, wenn auch das Fehlen relevanter Quellen in dieser Zeit die Beweisführung schwierig macht, da zahlreiche lokale und kleinere Kulte angesprochen scheinen. Auch kann nicht davon ausgegangen werden, daß zur Zeit der Abfassung der Bleirollen und Zauberschalen sämtliche genannten Gottheiten noch als solche in der Volksreligion Mesopotamiens eine Bedeutung hatten. Indizien sprechen dafür, daß teilweise ältere Traditionsstränge vorliegen, die vielleicht bis in die parthische Zeit reichen. Ganz offensichtlich ist natürlich der theophore Ursprung bei der iranischen Anaµhıµd oder Ispandarmid, bei babylonischen Göttern wie Bēl, Šamaš und Nerig/Nergal, aber auch einmal Mšiha/Christus. Schon gut bekannt sind auch die Fälle, in denen frühere Kulttermini dämonisiert wurden, wie der akkadische šedu oder der Terminus für ‘Tempel, Heiligtum’ ekurru, der sich in dem iranischen Gegenstück als parika- findet. Nur eine Minderheit, zumindest in den mandäischen Bleirollen, scheinen Dämonenbezeichnungen zu sein, deren Namen auf die von Krankheiten oder andere mit Unheil verbundene Begriffe zurückgeführt werden können.
Einer der von Shaked besprochenen Dämonen, der auch in den neuen Texten eine besonders hervorgehobene Stellung einnimmt, ist Danḥiš. Shaked 1985:520–2 zitiert bereits einige Belege für das Auftreten des Danḥiš in babylonisch-jüdisch-aramäischen Zauberschalen, so die Nippurschale 19:14 (Montgomery 1913:195, 200) und die später publizierte Schale 13:7, 13 (Naveh – Shaked 1985:198, 200). ....
