Diaspora Media

Diasporic Identifications looks at the relationship between second-generation Korean Americans and their uses and interpretations of Korean films and popular culture. The book combines intrapersonal processes of identification with their social identities to understand how they use Korean popular culture to define “authenticity” and to construct inter-group and intragroup difference and hierarchy. The book also examines the ways social identities intersect with intrapersonal identification within Korean American youth communities to shape interpretation of Korean films. Finally, the book includes new findings on the ways second-generation Korean Americans construct intragroup difference as well as identity positions within Korean American youth communities. Overall, the manuscript is a comprehensive examination of second-generation Korean American ethnic identity, reception of transnational media, and social uses of transnational media.

Research on media and diasporic communities has often either focused on representations of ethnic minorities in mainstream media or looked at the use of media by diasporic communities.
By exclusively focusing on media coverage, the first approach has denied agency to how those represented in mainstream media interpret, accept or challenge representations of
themselves. The second approach constructs its object of study as diasporic media and hereby neglects the way in which these interact with and respond to mainstream media. This
article argues that a combination of these two approaches is fruitful as it allows for a more interactive and dynamic approach to mainstream and diasporic media which highlights the
way in which one shapes the other. This argument is illustrated through an analysis of debates among diasporic Zimbabweans in Internet chatrooms about the participation of Zimbabwean
nurse Makosi Musambasi in the British Big Brother 6 series broadcast on Channel Four in 2005.

From the late 1940s until the late 1970s Melbourne was home to a dynamic Greek cinema circuit made up of some 30 different inner-city and suburban venues operated by a handful of vertically integrated exhibition/distribution businesses. Dionysos Films was amongst the first Greek film exhibition/distribution companies to form in Australia and from 1949 until 1956 it operated with little significant competition, establishing the parameters for a diasporic Greek film circuit that stretched across regional and metropolitan Australia and into New Zealand. This article measures the shadow cast by Dionysos Films (and its charismatic proprietor Stathis Raftopoulos) over the history of Antipodean Greek film experiences and the implications that this neglected aspect of Australian and Greek film history has for our understanding of the national cinemas in both countries.

This essay explores the function of different migrant
media in New Zealand drawing examples from across the board with a particular focus on Indian media. This includes traditional media (i.e. print, TV, magazine and radio), and online media. In this, the traditional communication networks of ethnic community and religious associations and their use of web, films and events is also taken into consideration. By exploring the role, challenges and potential of ethnic media, this essay seeks to understand how these media represent the diverse voices of migrant groups, in addition to providing content relevant to their needs as migrants (i.e. content that counterbalances the mainstream host culture as it is represented in the mainstream media).

Contemporary media help construct diasporic identities
From 2009-2010, post-docs Jasmijn van Gorp and Louise Mueller carried out a pilot-study on media use among migrants from Ghana now living in the Bijlmer and from the former Yugoslavia (refugee women) as part of the research project Media and Diaspora. They discovered that contemporary media, from television to photo and film, to social-networking sites, played an important role in shaping the identities of both communities but also that there were significant differences between them. This project will also lead to an exhibition and a seminar: "Media, Visibility and Diasporas in The Netherlands," in co-operation with Imagine IC, Amsterdam, scheduled for September 2011.

This study explores the identity construction of London-based Filipinos across the media of news and karaoke. In bridging the ‘‘public knowledge project’’ with the ‘‘popular culture project,’’ I argue that the seemingly innocent social practice of singing involves raising and erasing of symbolic boundaries. As national identities are constantly flagged in everyday life, I examine how Filipino audiences negotiate multiple attachments in both media practices. From participant observation and qualitative interviews, I discover that news reception generally enables both banal nationalism and banal transnationalism, whereas karaoke functions more as a homeland-directed ‘‘high holiday.’’ I demonstrate how audiences weave in and out of their loyalties to British and Filipino publics across the media of British news, Filipino news, as well as karaoke.

This chapter explores conditions of existential tourism among overseas Chinese, focusing on relations with their ancestral homeland areas in China. Like other disaporic ethnic groups, overseas Chinese migrants, in both historic and contemporary times, have followed long established paths, bound by ‘networks of ethnicity’, which “extend the group’s identity spatially, and are an important facet of social and economic organization, particularly within migrant communities” (Mitchell 2000: 392). Highly structured ethnic networks support existential tourism to China and several major fields of influence shape this structuration process, overlapping in different ways. Overseas Chinese institutional structures support ideas about traditional Chinese values, thereby working to enable and maintain a sense of ‘Chineseness’. ‘Traditional values’, however, have also adapted to meet the special conditions of the migrant/diasporic community, as migration creates both ‘outsider’ and ‘home out there’ experiences, the evolution of multiple homes, and the need for mechanisms to overcome geographic spaces between old, new and transitory homes (Leung 2003). The influence of space-shrinking technologies and globalizing modernity provide further realms of influence, shaping the form and experience of both migration and ‘Chineseness, by, for example, enabling closer relationships and easing the strain of return visits.

Hanhemen is a global digital platform aimed at Basques all over the world, whose aim is to connect, exchange information, resources, and share experiences, wherever we are.  It seeks to give a voice to and listen to how the Basque around the world are living their lives, to learn and experiences what being a Basque and world citizen is like, observing and living world events from a Basque perspective, regardless of where we Basques “are.”

This platform seeks to become the new digital space for the Global Basque Community, and is trying, in real time, to build a new digital model that will rebuild the Basque identity be reducing the distance between “here” and “there”, regardless of where one is looking from while observing the global Basque phenomenon.

For us, and for our point of view, this project is essential for the future existence of the global Basque community.  While respecting each group’s individual characteristics and interests, this project is setting up a worldwide, operative, and practical interconnected network that can help all these Basque communities, at home and abroad, to connect, to mutually reinforce one another with experiences and knowledge, and to become stronger.

The HanHemen, Basque Global Network initiative has been set up to listen to the Basque diaspora, and thank to the successful response it’s been getting, they’ve decided to extend the deadline to answer the questionnaire through to March 31.

Those who wish to be a part of this community can get in touch with the HanHemen team to get a copy of the questionnaire and thus take part in the process of getting the Basque diaspora online.

The Directorate for the Basque Community Abroad is working to revitalize the Basque Global Network, just like HanHemen, to connect all Basque citizens in the world, here and there, with each other.  That’s why this questionnaire was set up and sent to thousands of people.  Given the results, the response from interest groups, and the interest shown by the same, the deadline to hand in the questionnaire has been extended to March 31.  And it’s quite simple to do: just get in touch with the HanHemen group, get the questionnaire, and freely and safely express your interests, concerns, and proposals.

All those who fill out the questionnaire will be entered into a drawing for ten HanHemen product kits.

It should also be noted that the responses will be used exclusively by the Directorate for the Basque Community Abroad (which is promoting the project) to help it design HanHemen, and they will be analyzed and shared with the Scientific Directorate and the academic institutions which are handling the research.  Moreover, the responses received will be treated with utmost confidentiality and will be subject to the General Regime for the Protection of Data as regards the anonymization of data.

La littérature sur les usages des médias ou des nouveaux médias par les diasporas est devenue un lieu central pour analyser l’élaboration, àl’ère de la mondialisation, d’identités décrites comme transnationales. Cependant, en procédant de la sorte, cette littérature a tendu àmettre l’accent sur les connexions médiatisées transnationales de ces populations au détriment d’autres formes d’interactions médiatisées. Erigées en symboles de ces connexions transnationales, ces populations ont, àbien des égards, dans cette littérature sur les médias et les diasporas, cesséd’être des usagers ordinaires des médias ou des technologies de communication. En rupture par rapport àce type de perspective, nous avons conduit une étude qualitative auprès de familles d’origine maghrébine vivant àParis ou dans ses environs, afin d’analyser leurs usages ordinaires des médias et des technologies de communication. Tout en tenant compte des dimensions transnationales de leurs pratiques, nous avons essayé de faire en sorte de ne pas accorder àcelles-ci une place telle que cela empêche de comprendre les autres dimensions de leurs expériences médiatiques les plus banales. Dans cet article, nous proposons de revenir sur cette recherche, d’expliquer comment nous l’avons conçue théoriquement et empiriquement, avant d’en exposer les principaux résultats.

The paper analyses the conceptions of journalism functions. The author explores the similarities and differences in the works of Russian and German scholars, provides a comparative analysis of the social functions of journalism and the dimensions of its integrative function, as well as defines the functional identity of ethnic journalism. Examples of evaluating ethnocultural media through the functional approach are given as illustration.

The literature on the uses of media or new media by diasporas has become a crucial locus for examining the elaboration, in an era of globalisation, of transnational identities. However, by doing this, this literature has tended to emphasize these populations’ transnational mediated connections to the detriment of other kinds of mediated interactions. While being symbols of these transnational connections, these populations have, in a way, in this literature on media and diasporas, ceased to be ordinary media users. In contrast with this kind of perspective, we conducted, in 2012, a qualitative study among 40 families of Maghrebi origin living in the Paris region, aiming at analyzing their ordinary media and new media uses. While taking into account the transnational dimensions of their practices, we tried to do it without giving to these an over-emphasis that would have been detrimental to an understanding of their broader banal media and new media experiences. In this article, we explain how we conceived our research, both in theoretical and empirical terms, before discussing some of its main results. While underlining the significance for our interviewees of their mediated transnational interactions, we stress the need of being cautious, when considering these, of not obscuring the importance of mediated interactions operating at other scales, which we describe here.

This study examines how mobile phones are being used among Nigerien illiterate migrants of rural origin in Yola, Nigeria, to maintain, strengthen, and regenerate extended family ties. The research uses semi-structured interviews carried out in 2007 among Nigerien migrants in Yola (Nigeria) and argues that mobile phones have not changed the nature of the relationships between family members, the character of family ties, the persons involved, or the general configuration of the family. Instead, the device has expanded those relationships and made them more frequent than before and thus had a positive effect for the intensity of family relationships, their maintenance and a regeneration of the extended family.

The advent of the Internet has allowed many scattered communities across the world to rediscover and share a common identity that was believed lost. It has also led to the reconstruction of identities by way of new representations, which are constantly being formulated, nourished, and maintained. The Africans of the diaspora, in particular, created multiple websites for community exchanges in the form of discussion groups, online forums, interactive newspapers, blogs, and various media tools such as online television, radio, and newspapers that are being used as shared spaces at national or even continental levels. However, these shared spaces do not have the stability of national, cultural or racial spaces. They appear to be the receptacles of contradictory identities, concurrently manifesting globalizing and localizing dynamics. These spaces represent a ‘fragmegration’ (Rosenau 2003), where people struggle to reconcile the tensions resulting from their perceived Africanity and their belonging to a global world; the tensions between common cultural heritages and new identities; and the tensions between a shared experience of colonization and different expressions of colonialism in different parts of Africa – and therefore different conceptions of what it means to be African today. The objective of this paper is to show how these seemingly irreconcilable contradictions manifested themselves on the French African diaspora's online forums.

This study sets out to analyse the role of ethnic media in the lives of their audiences, with particular focus on news production, content and reception. In recent years there has been an increase in African ethnic media publications in Western Europe as an alternative platform for a distinct, ethnic and niche audience in a diaspora context. Yet relatively little is known about the way in which the media practitioners and audiences perceive the role of these ethnic media in the articulation and re-articulation of collective identities. Academic assertions in this regard remain by and large theoretical and at a surface level. Very few studies have empirically investigated the perceptions of the journalists, owners and audiences of these ethnic media. A number of issues have thus remained under-explored, such as the link between media consumption and the construction of individual identities. This study identifies and examines these issues through case study of two African ethnic newspapers, Metro Éireann in Ireland and The African Bulletin in Belgium. It explores the views of the newspaper owners and journalists, how they are translated into newspaper content, and how the content and goals of the newspapers are perceived by the audiences. The study has a multi-methodological design. A quantitative and qualitative content analysis is combined with in-depth interviews with owners and journalists, and surveys and focus-group interviews with audience members. This enables comparative analysis of the views of content producers, the translation of these into actual content, and the interpretation of this content by audiences. The main research findings concern issues around professional practice. Ownership in ethnic media in Ireland and Belgium is mostly restricted to individuals, unlike in the mainstream media. Immigration issues dominate the content of Metro Éireann, in Ireland while African-origin news dominates that of The African Bulletin in Belgium. However, all respondents use ethnic media as a supplement to mainstream media.

Despite its 140 years of history, Russian ethnic press in the United States has been an untapped area in media research. Who are Russian Americans? Where do their loyalties lie? Can multiculturalism overcome partisanship in highly conflictual situations? What answers to all these questions do Russian ethnic newspapers have in store?

This book addresses our knowledge gap with respect to Russian ethnic media in the U.S. and attempts to shed light on ethnic and political identity of Russian Americans. It examines news coverage of eight U.S.-Russian foreign policy controversies, including the tone of the coverage, attributes assigned to the two countries, and whether or not the conflict between them has been emphasized in each case. It strives to understand whether or not Russian ethnic newspapers in the United States consistently support one side over the other and, ultimately, whether people reading these newspapers are more likely to consider themselves American, Russian or a combination of both.
