Two species of carabid beetle:Bembidion properans Steph. andPterostichus cupreus L. were the most often captured into pitfall traps in the spring period on plots with various cultivars of annual legumes. The greatest density ofP. cupreus population in the field with annual legumes was observed in May, in the feeding and eggs laying period by pea weevilSitona lineatus L. (Col. Curculionidae) — the main legumes pest. In June the most frequent carabid wasB. properans, the small beetles destroying the eggs or young larvae ofSitona lineatus. No effect of usingS. carpocapsae nematodes to infect nontarget carabid species was found in case different doses of invasive larvae on the soil surface into traps, although the mortality of captured ground beetles was high. The length of life of Carabidae collected from traps with nematodes were not significantly decreased in comparison with the control group. Die größte Dichte vonP. cupreus wurde im Mai festgestellt während der Fraß- und Eilege-Periode des Haupt-Leguminosenschädlings, des ErbsenrüßlersSitona lineatus L. (Col., Curculionidae). Im Juni warB. properans der häufigste Laufkäfer, der die Eier und Junglarven vonSitona lineatus zur Beute nahm. Die Hinzugabe invasiver Larven des NematodenSteinernema carpocapsae in mit gefangenen Laufkäfern besetzten Bodenfallen erbrachte keine gesicherte Infektion, obgleich die Carbadiden-Dichte in den Gefäßen hoch war. Die Lebensdauer von Carabidae in mit Nematoden besetzten Gefäßen unterschied sich nicht von jener in Kontrollgefäßen.

A simple and sensitive in situ method for monitoring the occurrence of toxic algal blooms and shellfish contamination events has been developed. The technique involves the passive adsorption of biotoxins onto porous synthetic resin filled sachets (SPATT bags) and their subsequent extraction and analysis. The success of the method is founded on the observation that during algal blooms significant amounts of toxin, including the low polarity lipophilic compounds such as the pectenotoxins and the okadaic acid complex toxins, are dissolved in the seawater. The results of field trials during Dinophysis acuminata and Protoceratium reticulatum blooms are presented. These data prove the concept and demonstrate that the technique provides a means of forecasting shellfish contamination events and predicting the net accumulation of polyether toxins by mussels. Data regarding the development of a structured interview measuring alterations that may accompany extreme stress are presented. A list of 27 criteria often seen in response to extreme trauma and not addressed by DSM-IV criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were generated based on a systematic review of the literature and a survey of 50 experts. A structured interview for disorders of extreme stress (SIDES) measuring the presence of these criteria was administered to 520 subjects as part of the DSM-IV PTSD field trials. Inter-rater reliability as measured by Kappa coefficients for lifetime Disorders of Extreme Stress was .81. Internal consistency using coefficient alpha ranged from .53 to .96. Results indicate that the SIDES is a useful tool for investigation of response to extremes stress.

The detection of buried land mines in soil is a well-studied problem; many existing technologies are designed and optimized for performance in different soil types. Research on mine detection in shallow water environments such as beaches, however, is much less developed. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) shows promise for this application. EIT uses current-stimulating and voltage-recording electrode pairs to measure trans-impedances in the volume directly beneath the electrode array, which sits flat over the ground surface. The trans-impedances are used to construct a conductivity profile of the volume. Non-metallic and metallic explosives appear as perturbations in the conductivity profile, and their location and size can be estimated. Lab testing has yielded promising results using a submerged array positioned over a sand bed. The instrument has also successfully detected surrogate mines in a traditional soil environment during field trials. Resolution of the detector is roughly half the pitch of electrodes in the array. In underwater lab testing, non-conducting targets buried in the sand are detected at a depth of 1.5 times the electrode pitch with the array positioned up to one electrode pitch above the sand bed. Results will be presented for metallic and non-metallic targets of various shapes and sizes.

Effects of lime and gypsum applications on the quality of soybeans grown under no-till (NT) are not well defined yet. A field trial established in 1998 on a dystrophic clayey Rhodic Hapludox, at Ponta Grossa, State of Paraná, Brazil, evaluated grain yield and soybean quality based on oil, protein and nutrient content, after lime and gypsum applications under NT, in a randomized complete block design (n = 3), split-plot experiment. In the main plots, the treatments with dolomitic lime were: control (no lime), split application of lime on the surface (three yearly applications of 1.5 Mg ha¹), surface lime (4.5 Mg ha¹), and incorporated lime (4.5 Mg ha¹). Subplots received four different rates of gypsum: 0, 3, 6, and 9 Mg ha-1. The soybean crop was evaluated in the agricultural years of 20022003 and 20032004. Two hundred thirty four participants in the DSM-IV Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Field Trial who reported sexual and/or physical abuse were evaluated. Participants were categorized according to type of abuse (physical, sexual, both), duration of abuse (acute versus chronic), and onset of abuse (early versus late). Separate logistic regression analyses examined the relationship between age of onset, duration, abuse type, and the complex PTSD (CP) lifetime diagnosis for women and men. Sexually abused women, especially those who also experienced physical abuse, had a higher risk of developing CP, although CP symptoms occurred at a high base rate among physically abused women. The theoretical implications and incremental clinical usefulness of targeting CP symptoms with abused populations are discussed.

The purpose of this Communication is to compare the efficacy of different seed priming osmotica on the germination and emergence of maize caryopses. First, a laboratory experiment was carried out to determine the effects of different seed priming osmotica on germination. The osmotica used are 0.1% copper sulphate, 0.1% zinc sulphate and 0.1% sodium sulphate. A control of unprimed caryopses was used for comparative analysis. In general, seed priming significantly increased the final caryopses germination. Caryopses primed in copper sulphate, however, gave the highest final germination. Then, field trials to determine the final seedling emergence of caryopsis in the field were carried out in a semi-arid area in southern Zimbabwe. Results testify that priming in copper sulphate and zinc sulphate significantly increased seed emergence by 43% and 29%, respectively, while priming in sodium sulphate did not significantly increase emergence. The study thus recommends copper sulphate as the most suitable seed priming osmotica.
