Geografie Istorica

The entry begins with a definition of geography and with a description of what the discipline shares with the other social sciences and what makes it distinctive among them. Terminological clarifications are provided with regard to the relationship between human geography and physical geography, and between human geography and urban geography. After a brief history and overview of human geography’s engagement with social theory, the entry offers a discussion of the politicization of contemporary human geography and of how this phenomenon is reflected in theory building and concept development.

The title in English: "The truth regimes of the past. An enquiry into the historiography and history of geography" - this 370 pp. treatise was written in Romanian and published in 2002 with "Aurel Vlaicu" University Press. Ariceștii-Zeletin and Cărbunești are two of the easternmost communes located in Prahova County. Situated on close valleys, the first one on the Sărata brook and the second one on the Lopatna river, they share a similar past reflected by oral tradition and written sources. Like any other Wallachian free villages whose estates abut from ancient times, they needed to establish the natural boundaries and artificial landmarks which divided them and therefore in 1740, the locals achieved a neighboring document (‚carte de hotărnicie’) together with 12 boyars. Although 79 years later, on November 1819, a similar paper was written, the conflicts based on the border places never ended. As an evidence for this social and administrative reality, we will further present a newly discovered document dating from around the 1830s found in Ariceștii-Zeletin.

Vârful lui Crai is well known as the highest point (1502 m) of Tătaru mountains in the Curvature Carpathians. Due to its imposing status between the locals and its position on the medieval trade road of Teleajen, the toponym gained the attention of researchers in human sciences, which had tried to find out its meaning and age. This article aims to present a review of the folk traditions related to the Vârful lui Crai toponym and also to expose a geographical viewpoint on the condition in which had tooks its shape.

This paper takes a closer look at documents, memorials and briefs of Dutch, German, Portuguese, and Spanish-language origin to explore and reconstruct the dynamics of trade of Batu Sawar. This served as the royal residence of the Johor rulers between the late 1580s and at least until 1609/12. I will argue that in the early 17th century political and economic life at the Johor court at Batu Sawar was dominated by the interests of Raja Ali Jalla bin Abdul Jalil’s four surviving sons, of whom two played an especially important role in forging Batu Sawar’s commercial life: Raja Siak in terms of the trade in pepper and bezoars from Sumatra and Raja Bongsu in terms of the trade in rough diamonds.
