Advances in machine learning allow us to predict certain events before they happen. Diseases and deaths are one of the most painful of those events for people all around the world. There are huge amounts of health data available that can be used for machine learning to predict diseases that are going to be seen in a person. Sometimes it is possible to prevent diseases and even deaths if a patient takes precaution against it. So, it is possible to save millions of lives through predicting and preventing diseases and deaths using machine learning. In this paper, the concept of preventable diseases and deaths will be discussed. Then, studies that have been done in this field will be analyzed. In the end, future potential and enablers of disease prediction will be examined.

The challenge of novel and high cost health technologies has encouraged the growth of regulatory agencies such as Health Technology Assessment (HTA) organizations and Group Procurement Organizations (GPO). Yet the existence of several agencies in the same polycentric regulatory regime raises questions about whether and how their work can be coordinated. Drawing on a case study of GPOs and HTA agencies across four provinces in Canada, involving document review and key informant interviews (n = 44) conducted between 2013 and 2016, we explore the separate evolution of these agencies, emerging connections between them for non-drug technologies , and the organizational processes and evaluative judgments that underpin coordination efforts. HTA agencies and GPOs developed separately; connections emerged recently in three provinces and suggest four modes of coordination. One mode aligns most closely with that recommended by health economists and HTA practitioners, whereby HTA precedes procurement, with coverage decisions informing technology acquisition. The second mode is a version of the first, where procurement refers cases to HTA for coverage or technology management support; unlike the first, it recognizes procurement's evaluative strengths. Yet both the first and second modes focus on exceptional cases and will be infrequent. The third mode is more systemic, reflecting a generalized complementary of purpose as public agencies. HTA could support GPOs in contested technology acquisition efforts through timely and responsive input, while procurement could expand HTA's impact and inform HTA's growing interest in responsible innovation and environmental sustainability. The final mode is non-coordination, reflecting the potential for agencies to occupy quite distinct regulatory niches within the same regime. We conclude that consistency and convergence around a single model of resource allocation is not inevitable; nor is it necessary for coordinated effort. Thus, where differences in regulatory practice and episte-mology persist, mutual accommodation and shared learning may prove most productive.

Healthcare systems generate a huge data collected from medical tests. Data mining is the computing process of discovering patterns in large data sets such as medical examinations. Blood diseases are not an exception; there are many test data can be collected from their patients. In this paper, we applied data mining techniques to discover the relations between blood test characteristics and blood tumor in order to predict the disease in an early stage, which can be used to enhance the curing ability. We conducted experiments in our blood test dataset using three different data mining techniques which are association rules, rule induction and deep learning. The goal of our experiments is to generate models that can distinguish patients with normal blood disease from patients who have blood tumor. We evaluated our results using different metrics applied on real data collected from Gaza European hospital in Palestine. The final results showed that association rules could give us the relationship between blood test characteristics and blood tumor. Also, it demonstrated that deep learning classifiers has the best ability to predict tumor types of blood diseases with an accuracy of 79.45%. Also, rule induction gave us an explanation of rules that describes both tumor in blood and normal hematology.

In this paper, we analyse patients’ perspectives on the introduction of artificial intelli- gence (AI) and robotic systems in healthcare. Based on citizens’ experiences when hospitalised for COVID-19, we explore how the opinions and concerns regarding healthcare automation could not be disassociated from a context of high pressure on the health system and lack of resources, and a politi- cal discourse on AI and robotics; a situation intensified by the pandemic. Thus, through the analysis of a set of interviews, a series of issues are identified that revolve around the following: the empirical effects of imagined robots, the vivid experience of citizens with the care crisis, the discomfort of the ineffective, the virtualised care assemblages, the human-based face-to-face relationships, and the automatisation of healthcare tasks. In light of these results, we show the variability in patients’ perspectives on AI and robotic systems and explain it by distinguishing two interpretive repertoires that account for different views and opinions: a well-being repertoire and a responsibility repertoire. Both interpretative repertoires are relevant in order to grasp the complexity of citizens’ approaches to automatisation of healthcare. Attending to both allows us to move beyond the dominant (political) discourse of technology markets as the only way to respond to healthcare challenges. Thus, we can analyse and integrate patients’ perspectives to develop AI and robotic systems in healthcare to serve citizens’ needs and collective well-being.

Le domaine de recherche scientifique sur les cyberdépendances présente de multiples définitions de cette pathologie. À partir du matériel empirique issu des débats relatifs à la proposition d'inclure l'addiction à Internet dans le Manuel Diagnostique et Statistique des Troubles mentaux (DSM-V), ce mémoire vise à comprendre les processus sociaux bornant le développement de cette pathologie au regard de la théorie de la biomédicalisation. À cette fin, un premier travail sociohistorique retrace les voies de la biologisation progressive des pratiques sociales de communication en ligne amorcées dès 1980. Un second travail d'analyse de discours systématise ensuite le processus normatif se dégageant des controverses scientifiques liées à son inclusion dans le DSM-V. La recherche menée suggère une interprétation théorique de cet objet située à l'intersection de tendances sociales propres à la société d'information. Le projet d'inclusion révèle la volonté d'une régulation sociale effectuée à partir de la transformation technoscientifique du vivant selon des processus santéistes et néolibéraux. Recent EU and Greek Government legislation highlights the need for the modernisation of the public health management system and the improvement of the overall health of EU citizens. In addition the effusion of epidemics even in developed countries makes the need for the enhancement of public health services imperative. In order to best confront the above-described challenges, the National Technical University of Athens, in cooperation with the Greek Ministry of Health and Welfare and the European Commission (EC), designed and developed an integrated public health information network, named GEPIMI (Integrated Geographical System for EPIdemiological and other Medical Information), in the framework of a three-year pilot project. This pilot project, funded by Greek Ministry of Health and Welfare and the EC supported the Programme INTERREG II to establish an advanced and integrated web-based information system that can process and move information in real time, allowing public health authorities to monitor events at hundreds or thousands of public health facilities at once. The system is established among hospitals, primary healthcare authorities and health agents in Greece, Bulgaria, Albania, Fyrom, and Turkey. The project aims at demonstrating the best practices, prospects, applications and high potential of Telematics Healthcare Networks in Europe, with a view to promoting cooperation and interconnection between European communities in the field of Telematics Healthcare Applications. The GEPIMI System, implemented via an innovative web based system, constitutes a replication of a highly effective mechanism. It incorporates state-of-the-art technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (G.I.S.), web based databases, GPS, and Smart Card Technology and supports a variety of health-related web applications including early warning and response of epidemics, remote management of medical records, seamless healthcare coverage, comprehensive statistical analysis of data, decision-making procedures, inter-communication between international scientific fora and other.

BACKGROUND: Fishbone diagrams have been widely promoted as a systems-focused hazard analysis tool for use in root cause analysis, but they suffer from a number of structural weaknesses, including a unidirectional structure that only takes into account forces that promote an accident (ignoring those that make the accident less likely or less severe) and a means of displaying these forces that does not convey any difference in strength of influence. In a separate but related issue, many healthcare organizations suffer from a lack of change management expertise.

PROPOSED SOLUTION: To address these concerns, I present a novel technique, the Lovebug diagram, which draws from both Fishbone diagrams and force-field analysis (an approach to analyzing planned change). This new technique adds value to both its progenitor methods, while retaining their key strengths and ease of use. It can be used both prospectively, to assess planned changes, and retrospectively to assess unplanned (accidental) departures from the status quo.

DISCUSSION: The Lovebug diagram is a more powerful analytical tool than its progenitor methods; however, overall adoption of systems-focused tools for root cause analysis remains suboptimal. Additional research is needed to determine how best to promote a truly systems-focused approach to healthcare root cause analysis. Beyond this retrospective use of the technique, it represents a simple tool to assist healthcare organizations with prospective change management.

Health information technology can save lives, cut costs, and expand access to care. But its full promise will only be realized if policymakers broker a "grand bargain" between providers, patients, and administrative agencies. In exchange for subsidizing systems designed to protect intellectual property and secure personally identifiable information, health regulators should have full access to key data those systems collect.

The scholarship on responsible research and innovation (RRI) aims to align the processes and outcomes of innovation with societal values by involving a broad range of stakeholders from a very early stage. Though this scholarship offers a new lens to consider the challenges new health technologies raise for health systems around the world, there is a need to define the dimensions that specifically characterise responsible innovation in health (RIH). The present article aims to introduce an integrative RIH framework drawing on the RRI literature, the international literature on health systems as well as specific bodies of knowledge that shed light on key dimensions of health innovations. Combining inductive and deductive theory-building strategies and concomitant with the development of a formal tool to assess the responsibility of innovations, we developed a framework that is comprised of nine dimensions organised within five value domains, namely population health, health system, economic, organisational and environmental. RIH provides health and innovation policy-makers with a common framework that supports the development of innovations that can tackle significant system-level challenges, including sustainability and equity.

OECD countries today are focusing on ways to incorporate IS/IT to facilitate superior healthcare delivery. However, studies of IS/IT implementations for Chinese Medicine (CM) practice are very limited. We analyse western medicine (WM) and CM diagnosis and treatment processes and find that these clinical processes share some similarities. Hence, we contend that by implementing IS/IT system solutions, CM practice can also enjoy similar benefits from IS/IT as WM. This paper serves to identify a role for IS/IT in assisting CM clinic key processes as well as identify key IT investment portfolio components of such IS/IT solutions.

Drawing upon a three and a half year long research project, this dissertation examines the adaptation process of an electronic medical record (EMR) in a primary healthcare setting, with emphasis on methodological reflections on doing action research with a community partner. This dissertation thus comprises two components: the first focuses on the implementations of EMRs, and the second focuses on action research as a method used for studying the EMRs, thus giving a glimpse of the research process.

US hospitals often now operate at full capacity, frequently causing
incoming ER patients to be staged in ER hallways or detoured to more distant
facilities. The process of moving patients from the ER is complex, requiring
matching of resources to the unique hour-to-hour mixture of patients and
illnesses in the enterprise. Some hospitals are adapting ‘lean manufacturing’
techniques by using wireless patient monitors to allow flexible creation and
reconfiguration of ‘Virtual Intensive Care Units (VICUs)’ to match changing
demands. Unfortunately, wireless medical devices cannot be deployed
carelessly because radio- and data-interference and capacity limitations can
create patient monitoring safety problems. This paper describes using Coloured
Petri Net (CPN) formal simulation modelling tools to perform wireless medical
network pre-planning and ongoing configuration management. CPN models
can be part of an effective Verification and Validation (V&V) process for
wireless medical devices in VICUs to ensure patient safety while meeting
clinical capacity demands.

RFID technology is actually considered a hot topic in all scientific areas and has been described as a major enabling technology for the automation of many processes. Although it is not a new technology it has only recently come to the awareness of the public and is widely used in many sectors and particularly in healthcare. This paper aims to illustrate the utilisation of the RFID technology in healthcare, more precisely in infant security systems within the hospitals. To achieve this objective a case study about the experience of Portuguese hospitals in this system is presented and highlighted the main advantages reached with its utilisation.

The autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasingly being recognized as a major public health issue which affects approximately 0.5-0.6% of the population. Promoting the general awareness of the disorder, increasing the engagement with the affected individuals and their carers, and understanding the success of penetration of the current clinical recommendations in the target communities, is crucial in driving research as well as policy. The aim of the present work is to investigate if Twitter, as a highly popular platform for information exchange, can be used as a data-mining source which could aid in the aforementioned challenges. Specifically, using a large data set of harvested tweets, we present a series of experiments which examine a range of linguistic and semantic aspects of messages posted by individuals interested in ASD. Our findings, the first of their nature in the published scientific literature, strongly motivate additional research on this topic and present a methodological basis for further work.

Generative design research is a collection of methodologies centered around the creation of ideas and designs from the needs and values of the users as opposed to the usability of the system. In this paper, you learn how we utilized collaging activity to understand patient’s views of trust and healthcare. Specifically, we will discuss the utility of generative design research as it applies to managing complex discussions, gathering multiple feedback resources, and using your role as the researcher to enable the team.

In the recent decades robotics and computer science have been gaining more and more relevance in all aspects of our lives. In surgery, for example, they gave birth to procedures, impossible to perform otherwise, like the tele-surgery or the nano-surgery. On this regard, these applied sciences already play an important role in assisting the surgeon both in the operative room and, as a support, in the education of young surgeons, but much work has still to be done. In fact in these last years we have seen an extreme change in the traditional training in surgery and the computer-based simulation is one of the main reason of this shift. The spread of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) has brought major improvements in the quality of healthcare, but it has also increased the complexity of the surgical procedures requiring advanced and highly specialized training systems. Moreover these training procedures need to be reiterated during the operational life of surgeons. Therefore, considering the limited availability of cadavers and the public concern with the non-ethical treatment of animals, the traditional approaches to surgical training are drastically limited encouraging the use of surgical simulators based on virtual environments. Gesture-based interaction in the operating room can provide surgeons with a way to interact with medical images of the patient in a direct and sterile way as opposed to instructing an assistant. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a modern gesture-based interface using the Kinect is considered desirable and feasible during surgical procedures. To this end, we conducted a usability evaluation on a gesture-controlled medical image viewer with surgeons in a controlled operating room environment in the UMCG Skills Lab. Participants indicated that they would like to incorporate the system in the OR, even though performance measures indicated that the tested system is less accurate and slower when compared to asking an assistant. In a second study, we evaluated two popular gesture-based selection techniques (‘Dwell’ and ‘Push’) because of the importance of selection time and accuracy in surgical tasks. Results from this experiment indicated that the tested techniques were moderately less accurate while selection time was higher for gesture-based selection techniques when compared to the mouse condition. Overall, our studies show that GBI in the operating room is promising but possible refinements include additional functionality, recognition accuracy, more precise cursor control and more ‘natural’ gestures for certain functionality.

The objective of this research was to design a 2.4 GHz class AB Power Amplifier (PA), with 0.18um Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) CMOS technology by using Cadence software, for health care applications. The ultimate goal for such application is to minimize the trade-offs between performance and cost, and between performance and low power consumption design. This paper introduces the design of a 2.4GHz class AB power amplifier which consists of two stage amplifiers. This power amplifier can transmit 10dBm output power to a 50 load. The power added efficiency is 7.5% at 1dB compression point and the power gain is 10dB, the total power consumption is 0.135W. The performance of the power amplifier meets the specification requirements of the desired.

While there has been considerable attention devoted to the deployment of electronic health record (EHR) systems, there has been far less attention given to their appropriation for use in clinical encounters -particularly in the context of complex, chronic illness. The Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA) has been at the forefront of EHR adoption and, as such, provides a unique opportunity to examine a mature EHR system in widespread use. Moreover, with a high prevalence of diabetes in its patient population, the VA provides a useful platform for examining EHR use in the context of chronic disease care. We conducted a sequential, exploratory qualitative study at two VA Medical Centers in the Midwest. First, we conducted observations of 64 clinical consultations with diabetes patients. These observations involved 31 different health care providers. Second, using insights from these observations, we conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 39 health care providers focusing on their use of information in diabetes patient care. Field notes and interview transcripts were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. Our analysis generated several categories of EHR use in clinical encounters: priming, structuring, assessing, informing, and continuing. We also outline some mismatches between EHR system design and VA diabetes care practices. We conclude by discussing implications of these emergent system uses for improving the software design of EHRs to better support chronic disease care, as well as for our understanding of the integration of technologies in health care.

Poor treatment adherence is an increasing challenge for healthcare, especially for chronic diseases and patient-administered treatments. This research has investigated how design thinking can improve adherence in self-administered treatment technology. The study has three main objectives. The first is to investigate the current state of adherence and its involvement in the design process. For this objective, literature about adherence theoretical frameworks, design thinking, and medical technology was reviewed. Also, in five SME case studies, interviews provided evidence of consideration of adherence during the design process. The second objective was to explore consideration of adherence at an early stage of a design process. Postgraduate students on an MA Design project were observed while applying design thinking processes to develop a medical solution. The third objective was to assess a framework though an eDelphi study that built consensus from panellists on adherence factors that influence patient adherence to a treatment technology regimen, and the importance of each factor.
A number of gaps were identified after addressing the first objective: 1) a lack of an adherence framework that considers the nature of self-administered treatment technology products, 2) There is a lack of a practical mechanism to consider adherence factors during the design and development of medical treatment technology, and 3) There is a need for a resource that can guide and help companies to consider adherence factors during the design process.
Based on the research findings, the study claims two contributions to knowledge: an adherence framework that identifies factors that affect patient-administered technology treatment adherence and their level of importance, and a design-focused adherence canvas, based on the adherence framework (1st claim), which is a practical resource that record how adherence factors are being consideration and their level of importance.

Background: After investing significant amounts of time and money in conducting formal risk assessments such as root cause analysis (RCA) or failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), healthcare workers are left to their own devices in generating high quality risk control options.

Personal health technologies (PHTs) are near-body devices or applications designed for use by a single individual, principally outside healthcare facilities.  They enable users to monitor physiological processes or body activity, are frequently communication-enabled, and sometimes also intervene therapeutically.  This paper explores a range of PHTs, from blood pressure or blood glucose monitors purchased in pharmacies, fitness monitors such as FitBit and Nike+ Fuelband, through to drug pumps and implantable medical devices.  It applies a new materialist analysis, first reverse engineering a range of PHTs to explore their micropolitics, and then forward-engineering PHTs to meet, variously, public health, corporate, patient and resisting-citizen agendas.  The paper concludes with a critical discussion of PHTs, and the possibilities of designing devices and apps that might foster a subversive micropolitics and encourage collective and resisting ‘citizen-health’.

OBJECTIVE To summarize current excellent medical informatics research in the field of human factors and organizational issues.
METHOD Using PubMed, a total of 3,024 papers were selected from 17 journals. The papers were evaluated on the basis of their title, keywords, and abstract, using several exclusion and inclusion criteria. 15 preselected papers were carefully evaluated by six referees using a standard evaluation grid.
RESULTS Six best papers were selected exemplifying the central role cognitive and social sciences can play in medical informatics research. Among other contributions, those studies: (i) make use of the distributed cognition paradigm to model and understand clinical care situations; (ii) take into account organizational issues to analyse the impact of HIT on information exchange and coordination processes; (iii) illustrate how models and empirical data from cognitive psychology can be used in medical informatics; and (iv) highlight the need of qualitative studies to analyze the unexpected side effects of HIT on cognitive and work processes.
CONCLUSION The selected papers demonstrate that paradigms, methodologies, models, and results from cognitive and social sciences can help to bridge the gap between HIT and end users, and contribute to limit adoption failures that are reported regularly.

A Internet das Coisas é considerada o futuro na internet atual, ela é o conceito de uma rede de diversos dispositivos e aparelhos de uso cotidiano conectados à internet usados para auxiliar o ser humano na realização de tarefas, tornando-as mais rápidas e eficientes.
A Internet das Coisas amplia a inovação no acompanhamento de pacientes. A prevenção de problemas de saúde torna-se mais eficaz com uma coleta em tempo real de informações do nosso corpo. Já os diagnósticos passam a ser mais precisos, uma vez que o perfil do paciente é criado com registros de longa duração. Assim, anualmente, milhões de pessoas ganham uma melhor qualidade de vida, com menos doenças e mais tempo para lidarem com os seus afazeres.
Na atualidade, já existem diversos exemplos de aplicabilidade da IoT, que são, em sua maioria, acessíveis. Os casos já existentes vão desde aplicativos, usado tanto por médicos quanto por pacientes, que monitoram a pressão cardíaca, contam os passos, o nível de açúcar no sangue, lembram o usuário de beber água dentre outros, até o protótipo de quartos de hospital conectados, com a função de monitorar e coletar dados de pacientes com mais eficácia e em menos tempo.
A internet das coisas está cada vez mais presente no cotidiano das pessoas, e suas áreas de atuação crescem exponencialmente, aumentando o acesso ao conhecimento da comunidade, e abrindo novos caminhos considerados anteriormente impossíveis, o limite da IoT é o imaginário humano.

Healthcare changes dramatically because of technological developments, from anaesthetics and antibiotics to magnetic resonance imaging scanners and radiotherapy. Future technological innovation is going to keep transforming healthcare, yet while technologies (new drugs and treatments, new devices, new social media support for healthcare, etc) will drive innovation, human factors will remain one of the stable limitations of breakthroughs. No predictions can satisfy everybody; instead, this article explores fragments of the future to see how to think more clearly about how to get where we want to go. Although the medical culture is similar, there have been dramatic technological changes, and actually these changes would be hard to explain. Does anybody even know how an infusion pump works? They used to be clockwork (and before that, gravity fed) and now almost everything contains a computer and has a colourful screen and lots of buttons. Implanted defibrillators that use telephone networks and web sites to keep cardiologists up to date with their patients are just magic; new pharmaceuticals that change moods, change blood pressure, or kill bacteria: all are modern magic. On reflection, given the centuries of stability, it is amazing how much healthcare has changed in the last 150 years – and one wonders how this accelerating pace of change will proceed in the future. Arthur C. Clarke, the prolific futurist and science fiction writer, famously said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Perhaps the main difference for the couple lifted out of the nineteenth century is they are sure it's magic, whereas we have stopped thinking about it, and just take it for granted! Time-travelling fiction starts to dig into many interesting issues we might normally avoid thinking about. What about organ harvesting? What about enhanced humans? What about the end of antibiotics? Will robots take over? And so on. Some of what seems to us today like science fiction is going to be routine in the future, perhaps even in our lifetimes. This article is based on evidence from empirical research conducted by the Observatory of Intranet during 2006. Results refer to 19 case studies carried out in the Italian healthcare sector through direct interviews with the management. The article focuses on the following questions: (1) what are the intranet models (functionalities, services, processes and performance)? and (2) what are the evolutive paths towards those models? In this Science Fiction Prototype (SFP) we explore the evolving relationship between technology and people. We do this by considering what may seem two irreconcilable aspirations of the human condition; the desire for utilizing ever increasingly sophisticated science based technology in our life whilst at the same time preserving the spiritual values that make us human. Superficially it would seem that these two forces in our life are pulling us in opposite directions. Can the forces of technology and spirituality be balanced in modern life? To investigate this issue we invent a future in which nano-computing technology is available for sale in many forms. One form is smart-paint called “iSkin” which, when painted on surfaces, turns them into interactive multi-media mediums. The characters in this story use this “magical” paint to create an immersive reality environment, the “WonderHome” in which reality and virtuality become confused in an intoxicating mix of sensory experiences that causes a madness known as “Obsessive-Compulsive Technophilia Disorder (OCTD)”. In the story a cure to this emerges in the form of the ancient Chinese practice of Chan, a form of Buddhism.
