Abstract  This work presents the effect, in terms of  travel distance and material handling time reductions, of an optimal rather than a uniform item allocation in one-block picking warehouses, both with and without the use of a simple picking heuristic. Since developing efficient product-location strategies represents a critical issue in Operations Management, due to the impact on warehouse performance in terms  of both service level and operation costs, this paper focuses on an effective quantification of obtainable travel time reductions, obtaining a significant result for manufacturing companies aiming to determine the most appropriate material handling resource configuration. Building on previous work on the effect of slot-code optimization on travel times in single/dual command cycles, the authors broaden the scope to include the most general picking case, thus widening
the range of applicability and realising former suggestions for future research.

An efficient and new but non-intrusive method to detect the fluctuation in gear load may be the motor current signature analysis (MCSA). In this paper, a multi-stage transmission gearbox (with and without defects) has been studied in order to replace the conventional vibration monitoring by MCSA. It has been observed through FFT analysis that low frequencies of the vibration signatures have sidebands across line frequency of the motor current whereas high frequencies of vibration signature are difficult to be detected. Hence, discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is suggested to decompose the current signal, and FFT analysis is carried out with the decomposed current signal to trace the sidebands of the high frequencies of vibration

O objetivo deste trabalho é identificar desperdícios no processo de solicitação de materiais visando propor melhorias através da abordagem Lean Office. O método da pesquisa utilizado foi à pesquisa-ação, o projeto se desenvolveu no setor de Cabeça de poço de uma empresa de grande porte do setor de óleo e gás da região sudeste do Rio de janeiro. A execução do método deu-se através de coleta de dados com entrevistas, consulta a documentos, observação direta e mapeamento do fluxo de valor (MFV) no ambiente da pesquisa com o objetivo se obter um maior entendimento a respeito do processo estudado. Ao final do trabalho obteve-se, primeiro, uma contribuição teórica, pois os conceitos foram aplicados em uma empresa do setor de óleo e gás, ambiente ainda pouco explorado por aplicações da abordagem utilizada. Parte das propostas sugeridas foram implantadas resultando na diminuição do lead time em até 24%. Esses resultados são consequência da melhoria da estrutura e da eliminação de atividades desnecessárias que não agregavam valor. Conclui-se que é possível aplicar os conceitos do Lean Office no setor de óleo e gás, considerando as restrições e adaptações necessárias da organização.

From the electronic survey, 35 disruptive technologies were quantified and 13 key technologies: Internet ofings, Big Data, 3D printing, Cloud computing, Autonomous robots, Virtual and Augmented reality, Cyber-physical system, Artificial intelligence, Smart sensors, Simulation, Nanotechnology, Drones, and Biotechnology were identified. Both technical and personal skills to be imparted into the human workforce for industry 4.0 were reported. e review identified the need to investigate the capability and the readiness of developing countries in adapting industry 4.0 in terms of the changes in the education systems and industrial manufacturing settings. is study proposes the need to address the integration of industry 4.0 concepts into the current education system.

The need of information is such magnitude. It would trigger advances in information technology. Many things can be done by using the internet. The main objective that people use the Internet is to find the information. Unfortunately, not all the information available on the internet it is true and good consumed. There are plenty of information on the internet which is a hoax and contains elements that are contrary to morals and ethics such as terrorism, racism, and pornography. Thus, it required a strong faith and knowledge to be able to sort the incoming information. Due there are many children who also use the internet and conditions where the parents cannot supervise the activities of their children continuously, it would require an application that is embedded in the web browser so that bad content can be blocked automatically. This article focuses on the research of handling pornographic content on the text based webpages. It needed a smart application to be able to distinguish text that contains pornography. Thus, we are implementing artificial intelligence into our research by applying Naive Bayes and information retrieval method. As a result, the application is able to block 88.02% of the pornographic content.

Today, the poultry industry is one of the most important food industries in any country in providing food to the communities. Knowledge of how the production chain works in this industry is essential. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of 28 active production chains in the Iranian poultry industry and to calculate their relative efficiency and also determines the supply chain pattern for other chains. In order to achieve this goal, non-parametric data envelopment analysis (DEA) method has been used. The relative efficiency of each unit is first calculated with the network DEA approach and then the traditional DEA and the results of the two methods are compared. Finally, the cross-efficiency method is used to rank the efficient units. The results showed that in the network and traditional model, out of 28 production chains under study, 3 and 7 efficient chains, respectively. Fault diagnosis of industrial machineries become very much important for improving the quality of the manufacturing as well as for reducing the cost for product testing. In modern manufacturing scenario, a fast and reliable diagnosis system has turned into a challenging issue in the complex industrial environment. In this work, the diagnosis of gearbox is considered as a mean of health monitoring system by used lubricant. The proposed methodology has been performed on the basis of wear particle analysis in gearbox at offline stage. Possible wear characterization has been done by image vision system to interpret into soft computing techniques like fuzzy inference and neural network mechanisms. Basically, the maintenance policy has been taken with the help of fuzzy expert system, which has been described in the present work.

The Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) is one of the regions in Indonesia. Community growth in Yogyakarta reaches 1.34% in 2017 which can cause various problems such as unemployment community that continues to grow every year. In addition, another serious problem in Yogyakarta is high congestion which is implicated by the increasing number of population in DIY. Those problems have a bad influence on regional cash which is very useful in the development of the area. This study aims to increase regional cash of DIY by considering available employment and traffic congestion. Because the problem is so complex, a system dynamics approach is used to solve it. Based on the simulation results using Powersim 2005, the main cause of unstable regional cash is the high cost of building new roads, the cause of high cost of building new roads is congestion, and the cause of congestion is the high demand for vehicles by residents of the Yogyakarta area. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the level of demand for vehicles to increase the cash of the DIY area. By reducing the demand for vehicles to 0.00003, which initially 0.00005 has succeeded in making the regional cash stable and increasing continuously. In addition, to increase employment in order to eliminate the population unemployment in Yogyakarta, it can be done by increasing the growth rate of new companies. By increasing the growth rate of the new company to 1.2 which initially 1 has succeeded in making employment increased continuously.

This paper aims at illustrating the compared results of the application of two different approaches-respectively parametric and artificial neural network techniques-for the estimation of the unitary manufacturing costs of a new type of brake disks produced by an Italian manufacturing firm. The results seem to confirm the validity of the neural network theory in this application field, but not a clear superiority with respect to the more ''traditional'' parametric approach: in particular, the ANN seems to be characterised by a better trade-off between precision and cost of development, while a critical point-especially in the specific application context-is represented by the reduced possibility of interpreting output data (which is critical for the ''optimisation'' of design solutions during the new product development process). r

The goal of this user centered design (UCD) study was to to identify usability issues on the Boğaziçi University Industrial Engineering (BUIE) department website user interface (UI) and also to provide a re-design guideline for the website. In this context, the website was evalauted via using heuristic evaluation, remote usability testing, and post-test questionnaire methods. Every single screen of the BUIE website was evaluated, and design problems along with associated severity rankings were determined. Based on the heuristic evaluation findings, various task scenarios were created for the remote usability testing study. Four diffferent user groups were identified for the study: high school students, BUIE undergraduate students, BUIE Graduate students/academic staff, and other university students. The users were asked to perform tasks relavant to the group characteristics and expectations related to the website. Their performance were evaluated in terms of task completion success rate, number of clicks, and time spent till either accomplishment, failure, or quittance by a remote usability testing tool, Loop11. A post user testing questionnaire was also administered online where the user subjective rating data were collected for each task in terms of ease of use. The results indicated numerous UI design issues, as confirmed by both heuristic and usability testing methods. Further redesign study is required to implement the results of this sudy in order to enhance the ease of use of the BUIE department website.

Galvanizing is an energy intensive industry. Knowing how much energy is consumed when producing a certain product will help the company in determining which products can be produced to maximize profits. E-GEPDSS was built to explore the potential of saving energy in galvanizing lines by utilizing heat balance analysis. Heat transfer mechanisms of the heat losses for the pot presented in the heat balance are basic heat transfer concepts (i.e. radiation, convection, conduction, and specific heat. The pot heat balance model was built and applied using the data collected from a host company during the plant visit. Sensitivity analyses were done to study the impact of changing values of input parameters on the total heat loss of main pot and pre-melt pot during the production as well as downtime (for the main pot). Two methods to predict the pressure drop threshold (∆P threshold) to initiate bubble nucleation in polymer foaming processes are developed. One method uses the modified nucleation theory developed in our previous work, while the other utilizes computer simulations to model the growth profiles of the first observable bubbles in batch foaming experiments. These two approaches have shown reasonably good agreement qualitatively with each other in their ∆P threshold predictions. Moreover, the effects of the pressure drop rate, the gas content, and the processing temperature on ∆P threshold are demonstrated. It was found that the pressure drop rate does not have a significant effect on ∆P threshold , while increasing the gas content or the processing temperature leads to a decrease in ∆P threshold .

A major drawback to Industry 4.0 that few write about is maintenance of an industry 4.0 plant. The maintenance aspect is a much greater and immediate drawback than even the commonly known major concern of security, and the lesser concern of system integration standards. Maintenance of 4.0 systems has, and will continue to result in related huge increases in process downtime. The barriers to overcoming the maintenance/downtime drawbacks of a 4.0 system are almost insurmountable.

A starved emulsion polymerization of styrene was investigated, with the aim of controlling the molecular weights of the produced polymer. The reactor was operated under a starved feed of a mixture of monomer and chain transfer agent (or "modifier"). Tert-dodecyl and tert-nonyl mercaptans were the employed modifiers. The starved operation produced a constant "most probable" molecular weight distribution along the polymerization. A mathematical model was developed to help interpret the effect of the modifier chain length. To adjust some of the model parameters, two batch experiments were carried out. In the starved polymerization with tertdocecyl mercaptan, a mass transfer resistance to the modifier was required to fit the observed molecular weights. This extra mass transfer resistance could be neglected in the case of the (more water soluble) tert-nonyl mercaptan, however. The developed model also successfully predicts the batch experiments of Harelle et al.

In the context of the scope, time, cost, and quality constraints, failure is not uncommon in project management. While small projects have 70% chances of success, large projects virtually have no chance of meeting the quadruple constraints. While there is no dearth of research on project risk management, the manifestation of barriers to project risk management is a less dwelt topic. The success of project management is oftentimes based on the understanding of barriers to effective risk management, application of appropriate risk management methodology, proactive leadership to avoid barriers, workers' attitude, adequate resources, organizational culture, and involvement of top management. This paper represents various risk categories and barriers to risk management in domestic and international projects through literature survey and feedback from project professionals. After analysing the various modelling methods used in project risk management literature, interpretive structural modelling (ISM) and MICMAC analysis have been used to analyse interactions among the barriers and prioritize them. The analysis indicates that lack of top management support, lack of formal training, and lack of addressing cultural differences are the high priority barriers, among many others.

The case study of this research is Kaleh Dairy Company as one of the active companies in dairy industries. One of the most important strategic management tool called SWOT analysis was used in this research to determine the position of Kaleh Company. IE, IFE, and EFE matrices have been used to determine the proper strategies and competitive position of the company. SWOT technique was mixed with TRIZ to remove defects and improve SWOT technique and also formulate strategies. Then, the formulated strategies were prioritized by gray ORESTE to rank strategies for lack of information and non-precision data which was resulted by experts using verbal variables.

A survey of businesses in the automobile aftermarket industry provided insights into how reverse logistics performance can be influenced by a few key strategic decisions. Resource commitment is critical to program performance. However, it is important that the resources be focused on developing information technology capabilities. This, no doubt, is reflective of the nature of reverse logistics. Information support-for authorizing, tracking, and handling returns-can positively impact both economic and service quality-related performance.

Economic measures such as internal rate of return (IRR), net present value 0, and return on investment (ROI) are commonly used in evaluating commercialbased R&D projects. However, such economic measures in their commercial form are of little use in evaluating weapon systems development efforts. This paper examines challenges faced by the Department of Defense in determining weapon system value during the R&D portfolio selection processes.

This study has been undertaken to investigate the speed control ACIM using field oriented control. The principle of vector control of electric drives is based on the control of both the magnitude and the phase of each phase current and voltage. for this purpose, the study of available conventional and non-conventional approaches has been presented. This paper also presents a clear study which illustrates introduction of efficient vector control of ACIM.

The proposed implementation is a monitor system able to train operators for on-line real time manufacturing control in order to analyze the performance of a production process. This system integrates a simulation model and a statistical analysis module. The architecture has been designed to be able to operate in a real time distributed environment, by using TCP/IP sockets; obviously this approach makes it possible to access the data by different users with a hierarchical architecture. This innovative approach pays great attention to make a use friendly network support training for both operatives and managers thanks to the portability and scalability of the system. The methodology has been tested on a real case study and the experimental results demonstrate the potential of such an approach.

The amount of traffic congestion has major impacts on accidents, loss of time, cost of money, delay of emergency, etc. Due to traffic congestions there is a loss in productivity from workers, people lose time, trade opportunities are lost, delivery gets delay, and thereby the costs goes on increasing. To solve these congestion problems it is better to build new facilities and infrastructure but at the same time make it smart.

An intelligent traffic light system senses the presence or absence of vehicles and reacts accordingly. The idea behind intelligent traffic systems is that drivers will not spend unnecessary time waiting for the traffic lights to change. Ensuring the correctness of a given software component has become a crucial aspect in Software Engineering and the Model Checking technique provides a fully automated way to achieve this goal. In particular, the usage of Model Checking in formal languages has been reinforced in the last decades given the fact that specifications provide an abstraction of the problem under study, supplying a model of the system of tractable size given the state explosion problem faced by the Model Checking technique. In this paper we focus on the main issues for adding Model Checking functionalities to the RAISE specification language and present the semantic foundations of our current approach for doing so. An outline of the main problems faced in the process and of the solutions to solve them are also presented.
