Interfaces

The MIRAGES experiment mimics an injection well at the lab scale (1/20). This experiment allows the injection of supercritical CO 2 under geological conditions of pressure and temperature. The injection fl ow rate, confi nement and injection pressures and temperatures are recorded during the 30 days of the experiment. Chemical parameters (pH, major element contents) are also monitored. The reservoir is represented by a core sampled in the formation of Lavoux limestone. The core is drilled to form an injection well in which an injection tube (made of stainless steel) is sealed with class G Portland cement together with two discs of Callovo-Oxfordian clay representing the caprock. After the experiment, the core sample is studied to follow the petrophysical changes of the well materials and rocks. The interfaces between the reservoir, caprock, cement, and steel are investigated using scanning electron microscopy, cathodoluminescence, and Raman spectrometry. The main results suggest (i) good cohesion of the different interfaces despite the carbonation of the cement, (ii) the precipitation of different carbonate phases relating the changes in the chemistry of solution as a function of time, (iii) the enrichment in silica of the cement phase subjected to the action of CO 2 providing evidence of new mechanisms of in situ silica re-condensation, and (iv) the very good mechanical and chemical behavior of the caprock clay despite the alkaline fl ux from the cement and the acidic attack from the dissolved CO 2 .

This article focuses on the role of interfaces on lysozyme inactivation and aggregation process in stirred reactor. The first order inactivation constant of this process has found to be proportional not only to the power imparted by the impeller but also to the area of glass-liquid, air-liquid and PTFE-liquid interfaces in three reactors. Both area and type of interfaces act on inactivation: PTFE and air are four more efficient than glass to promote lysozyme inactivation because of their hydrophobicity. As well as physical interfaces, molecular surfaces of inactivated enzymes-more hydrophobic than native enzymes-enhance lysozyme inactivation and aggregation. This enhancement has been found to be correlated with the properties of aggregates of inactivated enzymes, especially their number. Then, under mechanical stirring, inactivation-aggregation process is induced by physical interfaces and self-catalyzed by increasing hydrophobic surfaces of inactivated enzymes.

The Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) is a new optical/near-infrared multi-fiber spectrograph design for the prime focus of the 8.2m Subaru telescope. PFS will cover 1.3 degree diameter field with 2394 fibers to complement the imaging capability of Hyper SuprimeCam (HSC). The prime focus unit of PFS called Prime Focus Instrument (PFI) provides the interface with the top structure of Subaru telescope and also accommodates the optical bench in which Cobra fiber positioners are located. In addition, the acquisition and guiding (A&G) cameras, the optical fiber positioner system, the cable wrapper, the fiducial fibers, illuminator, and viewer, the field element, and the telemetry system are located inside the PFI. The mechanical structure of the PFI was designed with special care such that its deflections sufficiently match those of the HSC's Wide Field Corrector (WFC) so the fibers will stay on targets over the course of the observations within the required accuracy.

Microscopic objects including living cells on a planar substrate are investigated in bio-medical applications of scanning acoustic microscopy. Beside of the observation of lateral structures, the determination of sample properties such as density, sound velocity, and attenuation is desired, from which elastic properties can be derived. This can be achieved with the aid of the acoustic phase and magnitude contrast represented in a polar plot. For homogeneous and sufficiently planar objects the contrast in magnitude and phase is a function of the properties of the substrate and the coupling fluid, which both can easily be determined, and of the mechanical properties of the sample under observation. For observation in reflection and variable thickness of the sample the signal will depend on the actual thickness. This signature of the object can be fitted based on a conventional ray model for the sound propagating in the coupling medium and the sample. The model includes also the refraction and reflection at all interfaces between transducer, lens material, coupling fluid, object, and substrate. The method is demonstrated for a chitosan film deposited on a glass substrate. The scheme presented here is capable to reach a resolution of about and even below 1% for relevant quantities in applications involving imaging at 1.2 GHz in aqueous coupling fluids.

The stability of an immiscible layer of fluid bounded by two other fluids of different viscosities and migrating through a porous medium is analysed, both theoretically and experimentally. Linear stability analyses for both one-dimensional and radial flows are presented, with particular emphasis upon the behaviour when one of the interfaces is highly stable and the other is unstable. For one-dimensional motion, it is found that owing to the unstable interface, the intermediate layer of fluid eventually breaks up into drops.However, in the case of radial flow, both surface tension and the continuous thinning of the intermediate layer as it moves outward may stabilize the system. We investigate both of these stabilization mechanisms and quantify their effects in the relevant parameter space. The generalisation of the Internet and the recent technological developments in embedded systems and wireless networks contribute to the realisation of a vision where access to information is possible at any moment and from anywhere. This is particularly attractive with information that is relevant to a specific geographic location. Applications that rely on locationbased services to provide information to mobile users, or that support interaction with real devices in the user neighbourhood, are called location-dependent applications and enhance the relationship between mobile users and a specific geographic location. However, the design of such applications breaks with the existing paradigms and methodologies as the mobile devices and the wireless communication infrastructures have characteristics that are very different from those of desktop computers and wired communication systems. The Around architecture is an open and extensible framework for location-based services that allows network services to be associated with specific geographic locations. By using this architecture applications can select services that are relevant for specific locations. Within the context of the Around project we have developed a prototype system with multiple locationbased services and an application that accesses these services to provide information related to a town transportation system. This paper reports on the design and development of this location-based application. Its design raised several new issues, going from the computational model to the interface paradigm, which are also discussed in this paper. The developed application is composed of several modules: a set of agents which are autonomous units with the knowledge necessary to select and use location-based services in a specific thematic area (e.g. transportation); an HTML output area based on a browser metaphor; and a location-context module responsible for determining the user context. The results show that an application architecture based on a modular approach turns to be very flexible as it becomes very easy to extend its functionality by simply adding or changing the agents that deal with each location-based service.

We have employed methodologies of human centered design to inspire and guide the engineering of a definitive low-cost aesthetic multimodal experience intended to stimulate cultural growth. Using a combination of design research, trend analysis and the programming of immersive virtual 3D worlds, over 250 innovative concepts have been brainstormed, prototyped, evaluated and refined. These concepts have been used to create a strategic map for the development of highimpact virtual art experiences, the most promising of which have been incorporated into a multimodal environment programmed in the online interactive 3D platform XVR. A group of test users have evaluated the experience as it has evolved, using a multimodal interface with stereo vision, 3D audio and haptic feedback. This paper discusses the process, content, results, and impact on our engineering laboratory that this research has produced.

The formation and growth characteristics of Fe based aluminide diffusion layers at the Fe-Al interface have been analysed in terms of interfacial interaction potentials based on the statistico-thermodynamical theory of multicomponent alloys combined with electronic theory in the pseudopotential approximation. The pairwise interatomic interaction potentials and partial ordering energies have been calculated to predict the effect of various alloying additions on the activity coefficient of Al atoms in G(-Fe&AlI _nX,Jo.os alloys where X = Si, Ti, Ge, Sb, Mg, Cu, Ca, Ag, Cd, Cr, Co, Zn, Mn, Ni, Pb or Bi and considered up to 1 at.%. The results of calculation show that the impurity elements with regard to their effect on the activity coefficient of Al atoms may be classified into two groups; I-group impurity elements, X,=Si, Ti, Ge, Sb, Mg, Cu, Ca, Ag, Cd, and Cr which decrease the activity coefficient of Al atoms, reduce the thickness of the Fe-Al intermetallic diffusion layer and II-group impurity elements, Xu=Co, Zn, Mn, Ni, Pb and Bi, which increase the activity coefficient of Al atoms, tend to increase the thickness of diffusion layer at the Fe-Al interface. It has been established, in agreement with experimental observation, that the value of activity coefficient of Al atoms in a-Feoss(Al, _JJo.os alloys has a strong influence on the formation and growth kinetics of interfacial diffusion layers at the Fe-Al interface. The analysis of the effects of type and content of Xl and Xn impurity elements on the activity coefficients of Al atoms, Y~,/$&, in cc-Feo,9s(All _ ,,X,,),,, alloys is in good qualitative agreement with the experimental results reported in the literature. 0 1998 Acta Metallurgica Inc.

A determinação dos mecanismos básicos e dos critérios de implantação de um pacote de software de rede num sistema operacional específico é apresentada em detalhe. Em seguida, são analisadas alternativas de arquitetura de rede susceptíveis de implantação no sistema alvo, no caso, uma arquitetura particular e outra seguindo o modelo de referência RM-OSI/ISO. Finalmente, o detalhamento da arquitetura escolhida, RM-OSI/ISO é apresentado com considerações sobre sua implantação e o escopo das aplicações suportadas.

Nanostructuring metals through nanograins and nanotwins is an efficient strategy for strength increase as the mean free path of dislocations is reduced. Yet, nanostructures are thermally often not stable, so that the material properties deteriorate upon processing or during service. Here, we introduce a new strategy to stabilize nanotwins by an interfacial nanophase design and realize it in an interstitial high-entropy alloy (iHEA). We show that nanotwins in a carbon-containing FeMnCoCrNi iHEA can remain stable up to 900 °C. This is enabled by co-segregation of Cr and C to nanoscale 9R structures adjacent to incoherent nanotwin boundaries, transforming the 9R structures into elongated nano-carbides in equilibrium with the nanotwin boundaries. This nanoscale 9R structures assisted nano-carbide formation leads to an unprecedented thermal stability of nanotwins, enabling excellent combination of yield strength (~1.1 GPa) and ductility (~21%) after exposure to high temperature. Stimulating the formation of nano-sized 9R phases by deformation together with interstitial doping establishes a novel interfacial-nanophase design strategy. The resulting formation of nano-carbides at twin boundaries enables the development of strong, ductile and thermally stable bulk nanotwinned materials.

Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) may exhibit both kesterite and stannite polymorphs and shows promise as an absorber layer in thin film photovoltaic solar cells to be produced at terawatt scales. This study examines the effects of CZTS polymorphism and inhomogeneous distributions of CZTS polymorphs on device characteristics under scenarios of single phase films, a sinusoidal variation between kesterite and stannite with depth, and single phase films with thin layers of the other polymorph at both interfaces. In general, stannite-only devices are predicted to have higher efficiency than kesterite-only devices and sinusoidal grading results in efficiency between those of the pure phases. However, the device performance is relatively insensitive to the wavelength of the sinusoidal grading and rather is very sensitive to the phase present at the CdS interface. Predicted AM1.5 current-voltage (J-V) curves and descriptive metrics as well as wavelength-resolved quantum efficiencies are reported for all models. Based on these results, we propose control of cation ordering in CZTSSe as a mechanism for device design using bandgap grading and interface engineering without variation of stoichiometry. The development of the phases in the interface of roll-bonded Al/Cu metal laminates controls the strength. Phase development as a function of sintering time was monitored via X-ray diffraction and X-ray mapping. Both techniques revealed essentially the same phase presence and highlighted a limitation of X-ray diffraction. Initial rolling reduction has no effect on phase development but does affect the interface thickness.

Analytics is having an increasing impact on decision making and performance within many organizations. To effectively compete in the analytics movement, operations research (OR) professionals need to understand the differences and similarities between analytics and OR. In this paper, we explore these differences and commonalities in terms of quantitative and soft skills. We support this discussion with the results of a survey of INFORMS members and readers of Analytics magazine. We find that the top five quantitative skills required for analytics are quite different from those required for OR professionals. However, the same set of soft skills is ranked within the top five for both fields. To better participate in the analytics revolution, OR professionals need to place added emphasis on data management and analysis skills, and strengthen their business-oriented skills in process and change management. Implications for OR professionals, academic institutions, and INFORMS are offered.

O presente artigo pretende discutir a hibridacao linguistico-cultural que ocorre na Triplice Fronteira, originando o portunhol – juncao entre as linguas hispano-americana e brasileira – de modo especial, o Portunhol Selvagem: a lingua poetica de Douglas Diegues. A partir da analise de alguns de seus sonetos selvagens sob a luz de teoricos como Sergio Buarque de Holanda, Nestor Garcia Canclini, Henri Lefebvre, Georges Didi-Huberman entre outros, almeja-se promover uma discussao acerca de elementos que podem ser relacionados a captacao de heranca das culturas originais, mas que se tornaram identificacoes para os habitantes das fronteiras. Assim, busca-se ainda, refletir sobre a importância da criacao e utilizacao dessa lingua poetica, que vem ganhando relevância no campo literario contemporâneo apesar de ser vista de forma estigmatizada, por nao representar a oficialidade dos Estados-nacao. The advances in studies of trace metal speciation and bioavailability since Mark Florence’s 1982 review of the topic, published in Talanta, have been comprehensively reviewed. While the relative merits of kinetic and equilibrium approaches are still being determined, advances in the applications of stripping voltammetry, including the application of microelectrodes and an appreciation of detection windows in both CSV and ASV, have been matched by the introduction of new dynamic techniques including diffusive gradients in thin films (DGTs), permeation liquid membranes (PLMs), and improved applications of chelating resins. There have also been improvements in equilibrium techniques such as ion-selective electrodes and Donnan dialysis. The ability of geochemical speciation models to predict metal complexation by natural organic matter has greatly improved, yet the models still require validation against field measurements. Decisions on landuse have become progressively more difficult in the last decades. The main reasons for this development lie in the increasing population combined with an increasing demand for new land and resources and in the growing consciousness for sustainable land and resource use. The steady reduction of valuable land leads to an increase of conflicts in land use decision-making processes since more interests are being affected and therefore more stakeholders with different land use interests and different valuation criteria are being involved in the decision-making process. In the course of such a decision process all identified criteria are weighted according to their relative importance. But assigning weights to the relevant criteria quickly becomes a difficult task when a greater number of criteria are being considered, especially with regard to land use decisions where decision makers expect some kind of mapped result it is therefore useful to use procedures that not only help to derive criteria weights but also accelerate the visualisation and mapping of land use assessment results. Both aspects can easily be facilitated in a GIS. This paper focuses the development of an ArcGIS VBA macro which enables the user to derive criteria weights with the analytical hierarchy process and which allows a mapping of the land use assessment results by a weighted summation of GIS raster data sets. A dynamic link library for the calculation of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a square matrix is provided. r

The electrochemical behavior of Cu–Ni alloys with different Ni contents (5–65mass%) in acidic sulfate solutions was investigated. The effects of working conditions e.g. concentration of sulfate ions, immersion time and temperature were studied and discussed. In this respect, open-circuit potential measurements, polarization techniques and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used. The diffusion-controlled growth of vanadium silicides (V 3 Si, V 5 Si 3 , V 6 Si 5 , VSi 2 ) was studied on bulk V-Si diffusion couples annealed for 2-36 h at 1150-1390°C. The layer growth kinetics was parabolic for all of the silicides. Only at 1150 and 1200°C was an induction period observed before the formation of a continuous V 6 Si 5 layer. The parabolic growth constants of the II kind for the exclusive growth of each silicide from the adjacent phases were calculated from the parabolic constants of the I kind measured on the V-Si diffusion couples. The rate constants of the II kind were in turn related to the diffusion properties of the silicides. As a result, the interdiffusion coefficient, taking into account the diffusion of both elements, was obtained for each phase. The resulting activation energies were 240 kJ mol Ϫ1 for V 3 Si, 250 kJ mol Ϫ1 for V 5 Si 3 and 190 kJ mol Ϫ1 for VSi 2 . The activation energies scale well with the melting point of the compounds. For V 6 Si 5 , the activation energy is strongly dependent on the set of thermodynamic data used in the calculation owing to the uncertainty in the decomposition temperature of this phase. 

Epitaxial iron oxide films are grown on Ag(1 1 1) by two methods. The oxide films are characterized using low-energy electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron diffraction. The first growth method is deposition of Fe films with thickness ranging from 1-10 monolayers on Ag(1 1 1) and oxidizing these films. The Fe film structure prior to oxidation is identified as poorly ordered bcc-Fe(1 1 0), and oxidation leads to the growth of poorly ordered FeO(1 1 1) films. The second method is sequential deposition of sub-monolayer Fe films (typically 60.5 ML) followed by oxidation. This procedure is repeated until the desired oxide film thickness is achieved. Iron oxide films grown by sequential deposition are identified as FeO(1 1 1) for oxide film thickness below $10 Å with growth of Fe 3 O 4 (1 1 1) for thicker films. Iron oxide films grown by the sequential deposition method have much better crystallographic order than those grown by oxidizing thicker iron films. Finally, the surface termination of the Fe 3 O 4 (1 1 1) films is investigated using X-ray photoelectron diffraction.

We performed a multiperiod data envelopment analysis (DEA) study of the efficiencies of selected branches of a large US bank (which we will call Big Bank) over six consecutive quarters (second quarter of 1992 to the third quarter of 1993). We developed a number of innovative application tools, including budgeting and target-setting modules, within a DEA framework that we subsequently customized for Big Bank. Within the performance-evaluation framework, we developed the ability to identify different potential groupings of branches that supported the multiple user views of the system. We also developed procedures to evaluate trends over time and differences in performance across user-defined aggregations of branches. We paid attention to the interface with the end users and, in particular, developed presentation tools to make the outcomes of the analysis available to managers at different levels of the bank.

We present an integrated model for simultaneous optimization of the loading and routing decisions associated with an automotive supplier's outbound supply chain. The supplier, Webb Wheel (WW), is a manufacturer of brake drums, rotors, hubs, and spoke wheels. WW accepts new orders from customers each day. Given sufficient inventory, it combines these orders into loads, releases them based on various dispatch criteria (e.g., truck-utilization, route-utilization, or penalty-based dispatch policies) and due-date considerations, and ships them in truckloads, less-than-truckloads, and containers. Dynamically changing demand information, inventory rationing, inventory interactions among orders, and lead-time considerations are some of the challenging aspects of the problem. Our optimization model is based on the decomposition of the problem into assignment and routing subproblems. The assignment subproblem determines the transportation mode and carrier choices, while considering total transportation costs. These costs depend on a variety of factors, including destination, number of drop locations on the route, and needs of customers on the route. Given the customer clusters and transportation modes from the assignment subproblem, the routing subproblem determines the sequence of drops and the true cost of the shipment using a modified traveling salesman problem. A scalable database with a graphical user interface supports the optimization model. We test our algorithm using four months of WW data and compare these data to the company's practice. Our results demonstrate the impact of transportation mode-specific capacities, customer locations, inventory availabilities, and due-date restrictions on outbound logistics costs. Since implementing our load-planning algorithm, WW has achieved cost savings of 4.4 percent over its previous load-planning process.

The fractional aircraft market is the fastest growing segment of the business aircraft industry. A fractional aircraft operation is complex-essentially an unscheduled airline in a constantly changing environment. Bombardier Flexjet implemented a comprehensive three-module optimization system to simultaneously maximize its use of aircraft, crews, and facilities. AD OPT Technologies designed the modules, using the GENCOL optimizer developed at GERAD, which employs a column-generation approach to decompose large-scale mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems. Since inception, the project has generated savings in excess of $54 million with projected additional savings of $27 million annually, primarily by lowering crew levels (20 percent), aircraft inventory (40 percent), and supplemental charter aircraft usage (five percent) while increasing aircraft utilization (10 percent). The quality of customer service has remained consistently high, with significant reduction in supply.

Bond failures at the acrylic teeth and denture base resin interface are still a common clinical problem in prosthodontics. The effect of methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer on the bond strength of three types of denture base resins (Acron MC, Lucitone 550 and QC-20) to two types of acrylic teeth (Biotone and Trilux) was evaluated. Twenty specimens were produced for each denture base resin/acrylic tooth combination and were randomly divided into control (acrylic teeth received no surface treatment) and experimental groups (MMA was applied to the surface of the acrylic teeth for 180 s) and were submitted to shear tests (1 mm/min). Data (MPa) were analyzed using three-way ANOVA/Student's test (a ¼ 0.05). MMA increased the bond strength of Lucitone denture base resins and decreased the bond strength of QC-20. No difference was detected for the bond strength of Acron MC base resin after treatment with MMA.

Batch experiments were conducted to study the sorption of uranium on selected clay minerals (KGa-1b and KGa-2 reference kaolinite, SWy-2 and STx-1b reference montmorillonite, and IBECO natural bentonite) as a function of pH (4-9) and 0.001, 0.01, and 0.025 M NaCl in equilibrium with the CO 2 partial pressure of the atmosphere. Uranium concentrations were kept below 100 lg L -1 to avoid precipitation of amorphous Uraniumhydroxides. Solely PTFE containers and materials were used, because experiments showed significant sorption at higher pH on glass ware. All batch experiments were performed over a period of 24 h, since kinetic experiments proved that the common 10 or 15 min are in many cases by far not sufficient to reach equilibrium. Kaolinite showed much greater uranium sorption than the other clay minerals due to the more aluminol sites available. Sorption on the poorly crystallized KGa-2 was higher than on the wellcrystallized KGa-1b. Uranium sorption on STx-1b and IBECO exhibited parabolic behavior with a sorption maximum around pH 6.5. Sorption of uranium on montmorillonites showed a distinct dependency on sodium concentrations because of the effective competition between uranyl and sodium ions, whereas less significant differences in sorption were found for kaolinite. The presence of anatase as impurity in kaolinite enhanced the binding of uranyl-carbonate complexes with surface sites. The kinetic of uranium sorption behavior was primarily dependent on the clay minerals and pH. A multisite surface complexation model without assuming exchange is based on the binding of the most dominant uranium species to aluminol and silanol edge sites of montmorillonite, respectively to aluminol and titanol surface sites of kaolinite. For eight surface species, the log_k was determined from the experimental data using the parameter estimation code PEST together with PHREEQC.

Planning, designing, and implementing systems to support venue operations at the Olympic Games is complicated. The organizing committees must create designs that result in reliable, high-quality venue operations at reasonable cost. The organizational backdrop is unique. The organizing committee has a limited lifetime, it has no organizational memory, any learning disappears with its dissolution, and during its lifetime it must change rapidly from a function-oriented entity to a process-oriented one. The Athens 2004 Olympic Games Organizing Committee (ATHOC) used innovative techniques from management science, systems engineering, and information technology to change the planning, design, and operation of venues. We developed the Process Logistics Advanced Technical Optimization (PLATO) approach for the games. In the PLATO project, we developed a systematic process for planning and designing venue operations by using knowledge modeling and resourcemanagement techniques and tools. We developed a rich library of models that is directly transferable to future Olympic organizing committees and other sports-oriented events. The direct financial benefit to ATHOC was the reduction of the costs of managing venue operations by over $69.7 million. The success of the games raised Greece's international profile in terms of capabilities in managing large and complex projects which, in the medium to long term, will yield financial, political, and social benefits. Internationally, the PLATO legacy of its Olympics knowledge base will enable future organizers of large-scale events to reuse and customize the knowledge to gain benefits and reduce the financial burdens on governments and society.

A new 3-alkylpiperidine compound (À)-acanthocyclamine A (1) has been obtained from the methanolic extract of Acanthostrongylophora ingens (order Haplosclerida, family Petrosiidae) collected from Wakatobi Marine National Park in South East Sulawesi, Indonesia. The structure of 1 was investigated by extensive 1D-and 2D-NMR experiments. The absolute configuration of 1 was established by X-ray crystallography from anomalous dispersion effects using Cu radiation as C2 (R), C3 (R), C7 (R), and C9 (R). A plausible biosynthetic scheme leading to 1 is presented, and compared with the biosynthetic pathway proposed for the manzamine alkaloids.

A fiber Brag grating sensor interrogator has been developed which is capable of gathering vectors of information from individual fiber Bragg gratings by capturing the full optical spectrum 3 kHz. Using a field programmable gate array with high speed digital-to-analog converters and analog-to-digital components, plus a kilohertz rate MEMS optical filter, the optical spectrum can be scanned at rates in excess of 10 million nanometers per second, allowing sensor sampling rates of many kilohertz while maintaining the necessary resolution to understand sensor changes. The autonomous system design performs all necessary detection and processing of multiple sensors and allows spectral measurements to be exported as fast as Ethernet, USB, or RS232 devices can receive it through a memory mapped interface. The high speed - full spectrum - fiber Bragg grating sensor interrogator enables advanced interrogation of dynamic strain and temperature gradients along the length of a sensor, as well as the use of each sensor for multiple stimuli, such as in temperature compensation. Two examples are described, showing interrogation of rapid laser heating in an optical fiber, as well as complex strain effects in a beam that had an engineered defect.
