Islamic Enlightenment

Modern dönem öncesinde İslam coğrafyasının farklı bölgelerinde ortaya çıkan tecdid hareketleri, diğer İslam ülkelerinde olduğu gibi ülkemizde de genelde modern taleplere cevap verme saikiyle ele alınmış ve bu nedenle söz konusu hareketlerin İslam medeniyetinin klasik dönem mirasına yönelik eleştirel tavrı ön plana çıkarılmıştır. Nitekim, ülkemizdeki akademik çevrelerde, Şah Veliyyullah ve Şevkani gibi alimlerin eserleri üzerinden klasik dönem eleştirisi yapılmış, fakat tecdid tavrının kökenine ilişkin soğukkanlı değerlendirmeler ve tecdid hareketlerine dair bütüncül tespitler zayıf kalmıştır. Bu bakımdan, Fazlurrahman ve öğrencisi Voll'ün dilimize tercüme edilen eserleri istisna tutulacak olursa, tecdid hareketlerini bütüncül olarak ele alan eserler veya bu türden eserlerin tercümelerine Türkçe literatürde rastlanılmamaktadır. Değerlendirmemize konu olan çalışma, Batılı akademik çevrelerde tecdid hareketlerini bütüncül olarak inceleyen belli başlı makale ve yazıları derlemesi yönüyle, Türkçe literatürdeki önemli bir boşluğu doldurmaktadır. Kitap, editörün ifadesiyle, "18. yüzyıl boyunca gelişmiş tecdid hareketlerinin Batı akademyasındaki tasavvurlarını ortaya koymayı" ve bu hareketlerin "İslâm Medeniyet Tarihi, İslam ilimleri geleneği ve modernleşme sürecine dair ipuçları" barındırması bakımından, akademik tartışmalara zemin teşkil edebilecek yönüne ışık tutmayı amaçlamaktadır. Giriş bölümü ve ekler kısmındaki yazılar dâhil olmak üzere, on dört makaleden oluşan derleme, tecdid hareketlerine dair Batılı literatürde yapılmış çalışmalardan önde gelenlerini, konularına göre beş farklı bölüm altında bir araya getirmiştir. Yazılardan, Eyyüp Said Kaya'nın Türkçe makalesi dışındaki metinlerin aslı İngilizce, Almanca ve Arapça olup, derleme için farklı mütercimler tarafından Türkçeye çevrilmiştir.

According to Henry Corbin, in Islamic philosophy, “divine language" is seen as an inexhaustible creative power that ensures nature’s ever-changing configuration. In this essay, I claim that American poet Kazim Ali’s compositions show us that there is continuity between divine, natural and poetic language and that it is through the verbal acts of his creatures that God’s scripture goes on writing itself. Ali’s work is thus in line with Islam’s “lettristic” tradition, which shows us the religion allows room for the kind of broad-minded views about natural diversity and sexuality that some critics accuse the West of smuggling into Islamic countries.

Mohamed Turki (born 1945 in Tunesia) is one of the important representatives of an intercultural philosophy. The author's book: Einführung in die arabisch-islamische Philosophie (München / Freibuerg Karl Alber / Herder 2015)  builds a bridge between Arab and European reasoning.

In this introduction to Arabic-Islamic philosophy  he emphasizes the deep roots and corelation of Greek philosophy, Islamic rationalist theology and mystical doctrine of illumination with the aim of "making a contribution to the history of philosophy in an intercultural perspective" (p 11).  
The reader does not find only a representation of the Islamic Enlightenment, during the "classical" period of the Middle Ages, but also the cross-cultural connecting lines of Islamic philosophy. The exciting relationship between tradition and modernity, identity and enlightenment has been discussed by prominent Muslim scholars and mystics till today.
