Ostforschung

This paper investigates the co-figuration of East and West in the historical imagination of the Global East. Focusing on the German Ostforschung, Polish Studia Zachonia, Japanese Toyoshi, and Korean Western History, it traces the process of making the imaginative geography and impossibility of overcoming the East and West binary opposition in the global chain of national histories. The invention of Eastern Europe and East Asia have been a part of the intellectual project of demi-Orientalization over the globe.

"Einleitung"

Die Einleitung erläutert Konzeption, Gründe und Ziele der vorliegenden Publikation sowie den Aufbau des Buches. Sie enthält einen Forschungsüberblick zur Geschichte des Ortes Zehden (Cedynia) und seiner Umgebung, formuliert Forschungsaufgaben und offene wissenschaftliche Fragestellungen. Danksagungen an Personen und Institutionen, die die vorliegende Veröffentlichung unterstützt haben, bilden den Abschluss der Einleitung.

"Die Schlacht bei Cidini in der Geschichtsschreibung"

Der Beitrag behandelt die Ansichten polnischer und deutscher Historiker zur Schlacht bei Cidini von der Aufklärung bis heute. Der Verfasser weist dabei vor allem auf verschiedene Konzepte zur Lokalisierung der Schlacht hin, die vom pommersch-neumärkischen Zehden über die Untere Lausitz und Schlesien bis in die Umgebung von Sandomierz reichen. Er stellt verschiedene Ansätze dar, Gründe, Auswirkungen, Bedeutung und den von Forschern genau rekonstruierten Verlauf der Schlacht nachzuvollziehen. Aufschlussreich ist die Tatsache, dass sich in der deutschen Geschichtsschreibung durchgängig mehrere Konzeptionen zur Lokalisierung hielten, während in der polnischen Geschichtsschreibung vom Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts an eine einzige Konzeption vorherrschte, die die Schlacht bei Zehden/Cedynia lokalisierte. Diese Einschätzung wurde nach 1945 durch die Herausbildung des Mythos um die Siege 972 bei Cedynia und 1945 im nahe gelegenen Siekierki verfestigt. Interessant ist zu sehen, dass viele Forscher, unter ihnen auch überaus anerkannte, die Fehler bzw. Irrtümer ihrer Vorgänger kritiklos weitertransportierten und somit verfestigten, ja auf dieser Grundlage zu neuen Schlüssen kamen. Es zeigt dies, wie weit sich die Historiker bei der Formulierung ihrer Hypothesen von den Quellen entfernt haben.

The history of Central European historiography is still something of a Cinderella subject: it is due to disciplinary dispensations and language boundaries that critical, comparative, and comprehensive studies of the historiographies of the region have remained rare exceptions. This volume breaks new ground by focusing on the Central European historiography of the Enlightenment in the twentieth century, on the works of Eduard Winter (1896–1982) and Fritz Valjavec (1909–1960) and on their reception in the region in particular. It brings together studies on Austrian, Czechoslovak, German, Hungarian, Italian, and Yugoslavian historiography.
Winter's and Valjavec's books, published in Brno/Brünn under Nazi occupation in 1943 and 1944 respectively, established “Josephinism” as a central category of research on the Habsburg Monarchy in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: Winter and Valjavec were both embroiled in Nazi rule, Winter served as a professor at the Heydrich Foundation at Prague, Valjavec held a chair at Alfred Six's Berlin academy of political science and was a member of the Einsatzgruppe D in whose activities in the Bukovina he participated. The chapters of our book show the conduits and catalysts of Enlightenment research under the impact of Nazi rule, they analyse to what extent the concepts and politics of Ost-, Südost- and Volkstumsforschung dovetailed with governmental directives, and study how Winter and Valjavec managed to garner support for their research programs after 1945 in both halves of bisected Europe: Valjavec was installed as the director of the Institut für Südostforschung in Munich, while Winter, after a brief stint at Vienna, relocated to the GDR, becoming professor at Halle and later at East Berlin.
Our book traces how Winter's and Valjavec's “Josephinism” was ensconced as a key concept for the study of the Habsburg Monarchy. It highlights that Winter's and Valjavec's concepts were shaped by their own experience of this very Monarchy and of its collapse: Both came from German-speaking families in bilingual contexts, Winter was born in North Bohemia, Valjavec grew up in the Banat and in Budapest, and their epistemes and concepts of regional scientific collaborations reflect these origins. The book looks at the fortunes of “Josephinism” in the region from the 1940s to the present. It contextualises the sprawling literature on “Josephinism” in all successor states of the Monarchy, and it fleshes out the promise and perils of its application as a basic template and instant structuring device: what can “Josephinism” reveal, what does it occlude? This reflection on "Josephinism" offers important lessons on how the diverse historical trajectories within the Monarchy can be synchronized, and about the political-cultural imperatives behind commonly used strategies of generalization, of projecting the history of one region of the Monarchy on its entirety. These matters of selection and selectivity as well as of periodization – of the sequence of Baroque, Enlightenment, and Restoration in particular – are salient issues in all chapters.

The art historiography of the period of German National-Socialism has made significant methodological progress in the last two decades, and the present volume widens the geographical scope to include the territories occupied between 1939 and 1945 by the German army. How did art historians in these countries respond to the expectations and demands of these new authorities? A range of studies on Czech, Polish, Dutch, Belgian and Lithuanian academics shows how they were either lured into cooperation with the Germans on the basis of ‘Aryan’ concepts of art and culture, or ostracized when not considered part of the German race. A range of other essays on German art historians show how they were actively involved in propaganda activities in occupied countries. Notwithstanding its geographical bias towards eastern Europe, this volume shows how important this exchange was for the course of the discipline in various regions, and that using archival research is a sine-qua-non for the study of art historiography in times of regime change.

"Die mit dem Klaus-Mehnert-Preis der DGO ausgezeichnete Arbeit lässt kaum Raum für wesentliche inhaltliche Kritik. Der Autor hat vielfältige Quellen wissenschaftlicher Institutionen, aber auch die Überlieferung von Ministerien und anderen regierungsamtlichen Stellen herangezogen, die zum Teil bislang kaum genutzt wurden. Guth kommt mit seiner Arbeit vor allem das Verdienst zu, eine erste Gesamtdarstellung des 'deutsch-polnischen Historikerdialogs' vorgelegt zu haben, die von der Zwischenkriegszeit bis in die 1970er Jahre (bzw. im Falle der DDR bis in die 1980er Jahre) reicht. Dabei analysiert er die historiographischen Entwicklungen beiderseits der Oder in ihren jeweils eigenen inneren Dynamiken, arbeitet deren Spiegelung in den jeweils konkurrierenden Narrativen im Nachbarland heraus und zeichnet schließlich den Weg zu einer konstruktiveren Diskussionskultur im deutsch-polnischen Historikermilieu sachlich und kenntnisreich nach."

The essay analyses the cultural process, that leads to the justification of the colonisation of the Slaves and their territories from the Ninethies to the Twentieth Century. In particular it describes the conflict between the German and the Slave civilisations in the German philosophical and historiographical literature from Herder to the Ostforschung and defines two streams of interpretation. The first one, taking place in the 19th century, is  based on the cultural difference and the following one is based on economic and apparent "neutral" considerations. Following this last interpretation, the Slavs are seen as economically and politically unable to rule a nation. The essay suggest that this kind of hirarchisation of different populations does not disappear with the end of National Socialism.
