Papacy

As an introduction to ecclesiology, this course seeks to provide a fundamental understanding the Church’s origin, nature, structure, and mission. An overview of the New Testament and historical sources for the theology of the Church will develop into two primary tracks: 1) an introduction to the major ecclesiological models, images, themes and issues; 2) a special consideration of the Church of Rome and its relationship to the universal Church, particularly the question of primacy and collegiality.

The theology and the practice of synodality in the Catholic Church are reviewed in the light of Pope Francis’ encyclical Evangelii Gaudium, of his recent declaration that “The path of synodality is that which God expects of the Church of the third millennium” and of his highly symbolical gestures in connection to the two sessions of the recent synod on family. Pope Francis is slowly overcoming a one-sided approach to collegiality through a practice of synodality which re-establishes the link between conciliarity and local churches and tries to root ecclesial discernment in the prophetic character of the whole people of God.

I believe that the best way to approach our topic is to walk the path of history. I don't say it in order to force the present discussion onto a plain that's familiar and comfortable for megiven the fact that my work is as a Church historian -, but rather because I want us to consider the new evangelisation as principally a historical issue. It is a theological category that ripened within a peculiar history and that ushered in, at the same time, a new stage in the Church's history, in which we currently find ourselves.

The consensus on Pope Honorius III (1216–27) is that he was a conciliatory politician who lacked the harder edge possessed by his immediate predecessor and successor. Yet, using overlooked evidence regarding the role of Honorius in Frederick II’s seizure of the kingdom of Jerusalem from John of Brienne in 1225, this article reveals that he was in fact capable of acting in a ruthlessly pragmatic manner. It provides a rare case study of the duplicitous uses that could be made of the papal chancery by an early thirteenth–century pope while navigating a difficult diplomatic path between two kings.

While the author cannot speak for churches of Christ, common among them are unique ways of understanding holy scripture, believed to have been written by apostles and prophets of the Lord before the destruction of Jerusalem (70 A.D.) and circulated among the early Christian communities (E.g. A letter called First Clement in about 95 A.D., refers to at least ten New Testament books), then collected as a volume by the self-identified Christian community of the second century A.D. or earlier, e.g. the list of Marcion (140 A.D.).

Joannes Leo Africanus, (c. 1494 – c. 1554?) (or al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Wazzan al-Fasi, Arabic:حسن ابن محمد الوزان الفاسي) was an Andalusian Amazigh Moorish diplomat and author who is best known for his book Descrittione dell’Africa (Description of Africa) describing the geography of North Africa.

Sul finire dell'VIII secolo Roma contava una notevole quantità di edifici religiosi: chiese, monasteri e oratori. La maggior parte erano decisamente antichi, altri -non molti, bisogna dire -erano di più recente costruzione. Un gran numero di essi era stato restaurato da Adriano I (772-795), che aveva attuato un massiccio programma di interventi tesi al recupero sistematico delle strutture già esistenti e ne aveva, al contempo, fatte costruire di nuove. È quindi la Roma di Adriano I quella che Leone III eredita e nella quale compie le proprie imprese edilizie, spesso in totale continuità con quelle del predecessore 1 .

Neste trabalho apresentamos uma tradução bilíngue, latim-português, de um importante documento medieval, a bula Ad extirpanda (1252). Usualmente qualificada como um dos
“textos fundadores da Inquisição”, essa bula é um documento valioso do cenário político de meados do século XIII. A tradução, inédita em língua portuguesa, é acompanhada de breve texto introdutório.

This study challenges the prevailing scholarly opinion that pope Gregory I's instruction to transform the pagan shrines of Kent into Christian churches was a direct countermand to his earlier missive that the shrines should be destroyed. By exploring Gregory's multi-faceted understanding of conversion and considering the depth and nuance of his pastoral strategies, it argues that the initial letter to Ethelbert, king of Kent, identifi ed the destruction of shrines as an example of the type of behavior that would be expected of a Christian monarch, but did not refl ect a carefully constructed strategy for conversion. Thus, the letter to Ethelbert was designed for the spiritual edifi cation of the king himself, whereas the subsequent epistle to Mellitus provided a clarifi cation of Gregory's plan for the pagan shrines and more fully refl ected the pope's syncretistic strategies for the conversion of non-Christian populations. In this way, both letters signify aspects of Gregory's rich pastoral consciousness and are more consistent with each other than is generally understood.

A lo largo de los siglos Roma se ha constituido como un mito, un referente al que han acudido todos los poderes hegemónicos –o que aspiraban a serlo– de cada periodo histórico. El ideal romano se ha configurado como paradigma de potestas y sus símbolos han sido utilizados para legitimar los más diversos proyectos políticos. Los primeros ejemplos de esta tendencia los encontramos poco tiempo después de la desaparición formal del Imperio romano de Occidente, cuando los pueblos germanos tuvieron que justificar su nuevo dominio sobre las antiguas provincias.
La Roma medieval, con el pontificado al frente, no fue una excepción. Si bien los sucesores de Pedro basaron su poder durante los primeros siglos en los textos bíblicos y patrísticos, el final de las estructuras imperiales les permitió establecerse como el principal actor político de la urbe. Frente a esta tentativa se encontraron la aristocracia local, emperadores y otros monarcas europeos que deseaban controlar la ciudad para sus propios intereses. Cada uno de ellos tuvo que elaborar un discurso propio para legitimar sus aspiraciones, en los cuales el clasicismo desempeñó un importante papel. Es en este ámbito en el que desarrollaremos nuestro estudio.
La llegada de la Reforma de la Iglesia a Roma supuso el inicio de una nueva etapa en la que el pontificado se encaminó hacia un modelo teocrático. No fue un proceso sencillo, sino que los obispos romanos tuvieron que enfrentarse a numerosos enemigos políticos, como el Senado que se restauró en el siglo XII. Pese a los éxitos que obtuvieron algunos papas, la situación finalmente desembocó en un autoexilio en la ciudad francesa de Aviñón en 1304. Esta huida abre un periodo nuevo de la historia pontificia, en el que los discursos fueron diferentes al de nuestro trabajo.
En cuanto a los objetivos que nos hemos propuesto, el más importante es analizar la imagen y uso que se realizó del pasado clásico en Roma durante el periodo ya indicado. Principalmente nos centraremos en los discursos de poder elaborados por las principales facciones políticas: el pontificado y la nobleza local. Estos eran quienes poseían los medios necesarios para poder crear una ideología basada en la Antigüedad, al contrario que el pueblo romano. Los campesinos y agricultores no eran capaces de utilizar los monumentos antiguos o de crear una literatura propia reivindicando su posición debido a una evidente falta de recursos.
El segundo objetivo de nuestro trabajo se encuentra relacionado con el paisaje urbano y cómo las estructuras heredadas de época imperial se integraron en él. Muchos de estos edificios sufrieron un periodo de decadencia durante la Edad Media, hasta el punto de que gran parte de ellos se encontraban en ruinas o habían desaparecido. Sin embargo, otros se reutilizaron como templos o nuevos espacios de poder, en donde la Historia Antigua desempeñaba un papel importante.
Finalmente, también serán analizadas las historias y leyendas locales que hacían referencia a supuestos episodios ocurridos en el pasado. La mayor parte de ellas difieren de los acontecimientos reales, pero no por ello carecen de importancia. De hecho, conviene señalar que, pese a que nuestro punto de vista racional nos hace considerar estos relatos como mitos, fábulas o supersticiones, para la población de la época eran acontecimientos pretéritos. Por ello, consideramos que no sería útil señalar que se trata de episodios compuestos de manera literaria o mediante creencias, sino rastrear cuáles fueron las influencias del mundo clásico para la creación de estas historias.

I offer  the published version of my article. This work presents an in-depth study of Mark's method of doing ecclesiology and ranking theological authorities.
Quite a few, heretofore unknown, facts have been discovered:
(1.) The important interventive roles of the papacy that were appreciated by Mark in the history of the Orient
(2.) Mark's reliance on Photius' works for ecclesiology
(3.) Mark's acceptance of the forgeries: (a.) Actus B. Sylvestri and (b.) Donation of Constantine per Photius and Balsamon respectively.
(4.) Mark's explicit and deep commitment to Constantinople V (8th Ecumenical Council) 879-80.

Furthermore, and entire section rigorously reproduces Mark's method for ranking and interpreting theological authorities. Surprisingly, Mark's method is not unlike the Commonitorium of St. Vincent of Lérins. He acknowledges classical "loci theologici" or topoi as they came to be catalogued by Mechior Cano in the 16th century. This firmly places him in the strongest possible position to dialogue meaningfully with Latins of his own epoch as well as with contemporary Roman Catholic dogmatic theologians. Mark's understanding of the role of Constantinople was well informed per his sources and his knowledge of the history of the Photian saga was second to none from his own day until Dvornik's thesis c. 1950.

"'Colunas de São Pedro' divide-se em duas partes que, de acordo com o título, dão sustentação à própria instituição da Ecclesia: territorialidade do poder e o poder sobre o tempo. Embora essas duas colunas de sustentação sejam aparentemente familiares àqueles mais versados na historiografia da Igreja medieval, o fato é que reside justamente nelas o grande desafio que o autor propõe: perceber esses sustentáculos de forma diferente. Não se trata de diminuir sua força, mas de mostrar que o material de sua composição é outro. Para tanto, foi necessário partir de uma profunda análise da historiografia - sem dúvida, um dos pontos altos do livro. A forma como os historiadores da Igreja e do político foram solidificando explicações e conceitos, a ponto de naturalizá-los, requer do pesquisador um refinado trabalho de crítica, permanente. Entre os muitos exemplos que vão surgindo ao longo do livro, destacamos o problema do conceito 'instituição', o qual Leandro Rust teve de enfrentar logo no início de seu trabalho. Se, por um lado, o conceito poderia adquirir uma feição explicitamente anacrônica, por outro, havia a dificuldade de definir seu conteúdo, uma vez que na experiência da pesquisa cabia quase tudo. O autor deixa entrever ao longo do livro os caminhos escolhidos - o método - para desentranhar o conceito às fontes. Um belo exercício de história que nos permite entender a instituição papal na Idade Média como 'poder decisório dos papas', por meio de registros já sobejamente conhecidos: sínodos e concílios. Mitos Papais é um livro sobre uma disputa pela verdade. Entre 1870 e 1950, um intenso combate foi travado para definir o lugar cabível ao Vaticano no mundo atual. Assolados pelo declínio político, os papas já não eram capazes de fazê-lo sozinhos. Até então, o pontífice era um sobrevivente do Antigo Regime. Mas, em poucas décadas, tudo virou ao avesso e os ocidentais foram desafiados a explicar a nova realidade: o que causou tão drástica mudança? A alteração era legítima? Que consequências ela traria? Na passagem para o século XX, católicos, anarquistas, nacionalistas e outros grupos ofereceram respostas concorrentes. Suas formulações, todavia, tinham algo em comum: recorrer à imaginação para conquistar as consciências dos contemporâneos. A disputa povoou nosso cotidiano de histórias fabulosas e controversas: o reencontro arqueológico com o papado de Pedro, a pureza e a corrupção do Cristianismo Primitivo, a salvação pública pelas mãos da Reforma Gregoriana, a monstruosa tirania do papa Bórgia e a suspeita da cumplicidade silenciosa entre a Santa Sé e Hitler. Hoje, vivemos as consequências desta corrida aos mitos para esculpir a verdade.

ABSTRACT
On the night of the 13th of February 1308, exactly four months after the general arrest of the Knights Templars in France on the order of King Philip IV the Fair, Giacomo da Montecucco, the master of the Templar province of northern Italy and a cubicularius of Pope Clement V, escaped from the papal Curia. A direct source provides us with a detailed account of Clement’s special frustration and great wrath after Giacomo’s flight. The master of Lombardy’s defection, it is suggested here, could hardly have come at a worse time, because it thwarted the strategy recently adopted by the pope in what had become a trial of strength with the king of France. This paper examines the meaning of this episode in the light of a general interpretation of the Templar affair.

Benedicto XVI puede ser llamado con el título de Defensor del Logos porque ha intentado reivindicarlo en todos sus aspectos. En el presente ensayo tomamos como punto de partida su discurso en la universidad de Ratisbona para estudiar, en primer lugar, los alcances de la exclusión del Logos en el pensamiento cristiano y hasta qué punto dicho olvido ha derivado en voluntarismo; y, en segundo lugar, las características propias del obediencialismo como expresión del voluntarismo y de la delogización de la cultura cristiana.

Grazie a Bonifacio e alle sue missioni giunsero tra i Germani centrali e settentrionali non solo il cristianesimo istituzionalizzato, ma anche la scrittura e la letteratura latina, la legge scritta su modello franco-romano (più applicabile e meno arbitraria di quella consuetudinaria tribale), il grande modello delle fondazioni abbaziali benedettine, che nei secoli successivi si svilupperanno sino a diventare centri di cultura e potere, giungendo a formare la base per grandi città medievali. Se oggi la Germania centro-settentrionale e i Paesi Bassi sono regioni cristiane – almeno culturalmente – lo dobbiamo principalmente all’ardore missionario di Bonifacio e ai suoi discepoli formati nelle sue numerose fondazioni monastiche in Germania, Frisia e Gallia. Egli fu davvero un uomo europeo e medievale, nel senso più nobile della parola – non influenzata da certe storiografie fantasiose di età moderna, negative verso il medioevo, di cui meglio parlerò nel capitolo successivo – ossia cosmopolita, colto letterato, abile diplomatico, evangelizzatore zelante e saggio monaco. Bonifacio fu davvero un ponte tra le culture: britanno di stirpe sassone, viaggiatore in tutta Europa, conoscitore della corte franca, portatore della Chiesa romana nei territori germanici, riuscì a organizzare una missione non debole e isolata – come quelle che erano fallite nei decenni precedenti alla sua opera, per iniziativa dei singoli ordini religiosi, solitamente irlandesi – ma una vera e propria “romanizzazione” della Germania, ossia un’evangelizzazione sotto l’egida della Sede romana e grazie all’aiuto pratico del regno franco, intenzionato ad espandersi ad oriente. A caratterizzare la missione di Bonifacio, oltre allo zelo, fu infatti lo strettissimo legame con i pontefici di Roma, legame che verrà analizzato in questo breve lavoro per sottolineare come non possa esserci vera missione nel medioevo se non con l’appoggio della Sede apostolica, garante a quei tempi non solo di dottrina, ma specialmente unico organismo produttore di cultura e portatore della grande tradizione unificatrice e civilizzatrice dell’Impero Romano.

The pontificate of Honorius III (1216–27) ranks among the most important papal reigns of the thirteenth century: the pope organised two large-scale crusades to recover the Holy Land, the second of which recovered Jerusalem for the first time since 1187; he presided over a ‘golden summer’ of papal-imperial relations with the medieval stupor mundi, Frederick II, emperor of the Romans and king of Sicily; he developed an original theological conception of his office; and he laid the foundations for a centralised papal financial machine. Yet, despite his significant impact on early thirteenth-century Christendom, Honorius has often languished in the shadow of his famous predecessor, Innocent III – a balance that the present book redresses.

Grounded in extensive original research into the manuscripts of Honorius’s letter registers, this study develops a revisionist interpretation of how the curia marshalled the crusading movement to recover the Holy Land. Questioning the utility of the historiographical construct of ‘papal policy’, this book provides new insights into crusade diplomacy, papal theology, the roles of legates, and the effectiveness of crusade taxation. It also includes a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the papal chancery and its documents, which will be of particular use to students and those approaching the medieval papacy for the first time.

Using class visits to sites as diverse as catacombs, Roman ruins, and Christian churches this class examines how the entire fabric of the western, if not the global world, is intertwined with the 2000 year old history of the Catholic Church and the papacy. In doing so it examines the major events, ideas, persons, and places that have influenced the evolution of the Church, beginning with the origins of the Church as a religious sect and political movement and ending with the establishment of the Vatican City State in the twentieth century. It concludes by discussing the future of the faith as Christians numbers decline in the wake of a rising secularism and a resurgent Islam.

This paper will focus on a specific aspect of how the relationship between tradition and the ecclesiastical authority is understood in the contemporary Catholic Church within the context of the twentieth-century liturgical reforms (especially those following the Second Vatican Council) and what this means for the possible Catholic-Orthodox rapprochement. The reforms have fundamentally changed the form of Catholic worship and their result were liturgical forms, the vast majority of which had little to do with pre-conciliar Catholic liturgy. In this sense, they were not traditional but rather constituted a visible break in  the integrity of the transition of Catholic worship forms. The main factor that enabled introduction of new forms was the concept of papal authority over the liturgy. Formulated implicitly for the first time after the Council of Trent, it had been evolving until the reign of Popes Pius X, Pius XII, and especially, Paul VI. These popes recognised that they had the right to both change the liturgy in a way that was  unlimited by actual tradition, and to introduce the effect of these changes as obligatory throughout the entire Catholic world. One of the fundamental consequences of this situation has been the far-reaching devaluation and problematization of the importance of tradition in its regulative and cognitive dimensions. In my opinion, the true problem that represents the most significant obstacle to Catholic-Orthodox rapprochement is the fact that because to these processes tradition has ceased to play any important role in contemporary Catholic self-identification and religious life.

L'espressione 'Chiesa romana' identifica tre realtà fra loro ben distinguibili. Questa è infatti sinonimo di Chiesa cattolica, di curia romana e di Chiesa della diocesi di Roma. Allo stesso modo, l'espressione 'clero romano' è trivalente: è il clero cattolico, è il clero della curia romana ed è il clero della diocesi di Roma. Questa sovrapposizione deriva da un processo storico che va ricostruito e che si intende qui presentare brevemente.* La ricerca, che è ancora lontana dall'essere conclusa, è nata da una considerazione a sua volta derivata da un confronto tra età molto lontane: l'VIII e il XII secolo. Nel periodo più antico la Chiesa romana era costituita in unità; il clero, nonostante le sue distinzioni gerarchiche, si caratterizzava per il fatto di essere quasi esclusivamente volto a espletare funzioni interne alla città. Aveva dunque una organizzazione ed una vocazione prettamente diocesane. Nel periodo più recente, invece, il clero che circondava il papa non si occupava più direttamente dei problemi inerenti la città. Per svolgere queste mansioni si era venuto formando un vero e proprio clero diocesano, detto Clerus Urbis, al quale era affidata la gestione delle chiese e la cura d'anime del popolo di Roma. I pApI nel RISoRgImento tra Settecento ed ottocento si ha un movimento politico europeo eterogeneo, che porta a distinguere il potere spirituale da quello temporale. tale distinzione passa per l'estinzione del dominio temporale della Chiesa, tanto nel suo centro romano, quanto nella compagine ecclesiale cosiddetta periferica, quali i principati ecclesiastici dell'europa centrale.

The Catholic Church celebrated two important centennials in 2016: on the one hand the 800th recurrence of the papal approbation of the Dominican Order, and on the other hand the remembrance of the 700th anniversary of the death of the Majorcan layman, polymath and missionary Ramon Llull. This article does not establish an artificial connection between these two anniversaries, but has instead a historical justification: although older research has already discussed the tension-filled relationship between this powerful institution and the charismatic individual person, more recent studies on the common research field of »missionary work« among nonbelievers are calling for a reassessment of this relationship between religious order and individual. The comparative study of the two »biographies« not only deepens our understanding of the productive crisis-ridden nature of the early missionary history of the Dominican Order, but also our understanding of the parameters of pastoral-missionary work among nonbelievers since the 13th century in general.

The system of papal provision – through which medieval clergy were appointed to ecclesiastical benefices across Christendom – has remained controversial ever since its inception in the 12th century. Xenophobic contemporary commentators, such as the 13th-century English chronicler Matthew Paris, lambasted the appointment of large numbers of foreign clergy to church livings through papal intervention – criticism that has endured in the modern historiography on papal provisions. The predominant historiographical interpretation remains that popes proactively developed an autocratic and nepotistic system of provision, expanding their own powers to reserve benefices through encyclicals such as Licet ecclesiarum, so as to increase their authority over the western Church, and to finance the curia by rewarding cardinals and kinsmen with valuable benefices in local churches throughout the West. An unresolved tension in the historiography has been created, however, by a newer approach that emphasises the importance of petitioners, rather than the popes, in fuelling the development of curial institutions. This article maps the state of the historiography, synthesises the differing scholarly traditions and suggests avenues for future research.

ENGLISH VERSION

In the early 1100s, the fifth-century church of S. Clemente in Rome was buried beneath an entirely new basilica. Inspired by suggestions published by Tommaso di Carpegna Falconieri (1998) and Valentino Pace (2007), the present article considers the possibility that this radical intervention constituted an act of damnatio memoriae or, better, of deletio memoriae, an obliteration of memory prompted by the nascent cult of miracles associated with Pope Paschal II’s enemy and rival, (anti)pope Clement III. Clement III (Wibert of Ravenna) died in 1100, not long after the execution of an extensive fresco cycle in the early Christian basilica celebrating the miracles and cult of the first-century pope and martyr St. Clement I of Rome. Resonances between these images and the prodigia attributed to Clement III may have invited analogies between the two Clements, especially during the turbulent early years of Paschal II’s pontificate, when Paschal, alarmed by reports of his adversary’s miracles, had Clement III’s corpse exhumed and thrown into the Tiber.

The perceived correspondences between the first-century pope and his eleventh-century namesake may have extended to their postmortem resting places – Clement I was martyred by being thrown into the Black Sea – as well as to their shared attributes, particularly the pontifical vestments and white hair prominently displayed in the frescoes. These attributes disappear in the early twelfth-century mosaic of Clement I on the apsidal arch of the new, upper church, where the saint is instead represented as a young man with dark hair, a dark beard, and an apostle’s clothing. This extreme makeover in a work securely associable with Roman reform-party sponsorship effectively dissociated Clement I from the painted images in the earlier church and, very probably, from his eleventh-century namesake in the Tiber.

Agli inizi del secolo XI, la chiesa di S. Clemente in Roma, risalente al secolo V, venne “seppellita” in una basilica completamente nuova. Inspirato dagli interventi di Tommaso di Carpegna Falconieri (1998) e di Valentino Pace (2007), questo articolo considera la possibilità che tale radicale intervento abbia costituito un atto di damnatio memoriae o, meglio, di deletio memoriae, una obliterazione della memoria indotta dal nascente culto dei miracoli associato con il nemico e rivale di papa Pasquale II, l’(anti)papa Clemente III. Clemente III (Guiberto di Ravenna) morì nel 1100, non molto dopo l’esecuzione di ampio ciclo di affreschi nella più antica basilica che celebrava i miracoli e il culto del papa del I secolo e martire san Clemente in Roma. I richiami tra queste immagini e i prodigia attribuiti a Clemente III possono aver favorito analogie tra i due Clementi, specialmente durante i turbolenti primi anni del pontificato di Pasquale II, quando costui, messo in allarme da quanto gli veniva riferito riguardo i miracoli dei suoi avversari, aveva fatto esumare il cadavere di Clemente III e gettarlo nel Tevere.

Le corrispondenze che si percepiscono tra il papa del I secolo e il suo omonimo dell’XI possono essersi estese alle loro sepolture – Clemente I fu gettato nel Mar Nero e così martirizzato – così come i loro attributi condivisi, in particolare le vesti pontificali e i capelli bianchi messi in grande evidenza negli affreschi. Questi attributi scompaiono nel mosaico di Clemente I del primo secolo XII nell’arco absidale della nuova chiesa superiore, dove il santo è invece rappresentato come un giovane uomo con i capelli neri, una barba scura e una veste da apostolo. Tale trasformazione totale in un’opera sicuramente associabile con il sostegno al partito della riforma effettivamente dissociò Clemente I dalle immagini dipinte nella chiesa più antica e, molto probabilmente, dal suo omonimo del secolo XI finito nel Tevere.

A long established tradition found in sources as early as the writings of St Cyprian and St Augustine and drawing on biblical precedent, allows occasions when lower ranking members of the church may speak out to advise or correct superiors. This was seen as a measure of the junior’s maturity in the faith. The reaction of the superior who recognises the justice of his inferior’s cause and his taking in good part any correction was seen as the guarantee of the integrity of his ministry. This paper considers examples of this tradition in papal letters from the sixth century and Insular sources from the seventh and later centuries, particularly the letters of Columbanus to Rome.

The goal of this article is to analyze the mechanisms used by Catholic Church authorities during the early modern period to control and repress heresies, as well as the ways in which foreign heretics were converted and eventually assimilated into local society when they came to Rome. Generally speaking, papal policies encouraged foreigners to hide their religious identity, with the aim of giving a superficial appearance of assimilation, in order to avoid any scandal. Although the guidelines established in papal bulls did allow for some exceptions, the high risk of being expelled or persecuted encouraged foreigners to present themselves before the Holy Office and disavow their religious beliefs. Their confessions before the tribunal were filed by the officials of the Inquisition according to stereotypes that filtered the memories of foreigners. How "genuine" were these stories? Do they simply respond to the expectations and manipulative tactics of the judges? The fragile boundary between true and false, between biography and autobiography, poses a question, one that always underlies any study on religious conversion: to what extent can we analyze the "real" motivations underlying any religious conversion?

La figura di Benedetto XVI è stata più volte oggetto di approvazioni e di critiche da parte di ampi settori del mondo cattolico e più in generale dell’opinione pubblica, sia durante il pontificato sia in seguito alla rinuncia all’esercizio attivo del ministero petrino (11 febbraio 2013). Rispetto all’ampia letteratura esistente sul tema, Oltre la crisi della Chiesa, lontano dal voler essere una biografia di Joseph Ratzinger, intende offrire al lettore una prima visione d’insieme della storia del suo pontificato, proponendo nello stesso tempo alcune chiavi interpretative per meglio illuminare il presente e il futuro del cattolicesimo contemporaneo. Gli anni di Benedetto XVI appaiono oggi significativi per il modo imprevedibile con cui si sono conclusi, ma lo sono ancor più per le questioni che hanno lasciato aperte: dall’attuazione del Concilio Vaticano II alle relazioni ecumeniche, dal rapporto con le altre religioni all’ecclesiologia.
A fronte della ricchezza del magistero che Benedetto XVI ha ereditato dai suoi predecessori, si può dire che abbia portato a compimento molte intuizioni maturate in seno alla Chiesa cattolica a partire dal Concilio Vaticano II, sistematizzandole con precisione in un pensiero organico, capace di interloquire con le istanze più avvertite della cultura contemporanea. Il suo pontificato ha inteso riproporre alla «odierna umanità» - segnata soprattutto in Occidente da una profonda crisi ideale - la fede in Gesù Cristo, cercando allo stesso tempo di sanare ferite e lacerazioni che ancora oggi minano l’unità della Chiesa. La sua preoccupazione principale non è stata tanto la ricerca del consenso quanto il perseguimento della verità. Non è stato un papa «politico». Qui sta la grandezza, e nello stesso tempo la debolezza, del suo pontificato.
