A burial context, excavated in 1982 at Armatambo, Peru, provides the basis for describing the Ychsma textile style during the Late Horizon. The textile data (types of garments, images, design layout , fibers, fabric structures, yarn spin, colors, etc.) are extensive enough to distinguish many types of Ychsma-style garments from those of other styles, and to identify similar textiles in museum collections. The provenience information on Ychsma textiles from museum collections suggests the extent of the Ychsma sphere of interaction on the Central Coast. Un contexto funerario, excavado en 1982 en el sitio de Armatambo, nos muestra las prácticas funerarias y la ropa de la elite masculina de esta época. También proporciona la base para describir el estilo textil Ychsma durante el Horizonte Tardío. Los datos textiles (tipos de prendas de vestir, las imágenes, la disposición del diseño, las fibras, las estructuras del tejido, el hilado, los colores, etc.) son lo suficientemente extensos para distinguir varios tipos de textiles Ychsma de los textiles de otros estilos de la costa, como Chancay, que se encuentra en los valles hacia el norte. Based on an analysis of more than 300 vessels from the Early Intermediate Period and the Middle Horizon, the Nievería style definition proposed by Dorothy Menzel (1964) is reviewed. The vessels come from the Cementerio de Nievería y, Huaca Tello (Cajamarquilla) and Catalina Huanca sites, all in the Middle Rimac Valley. The analysis covers the morphology, the technology and the decoration, as well as a retrospective examination of the ceramic tradition of the central coast of Peru in the current state of knowledge. This study achieved some data of archaeological contexts recovered by Max Uhle, Louis M. Stumer and the Italian Archaeological Mission and put together various gravelots from Huaca Tello and Catalina Huanca. In order to achieve the goals it was necessary to expect a great morphological variety of the ceramic tradition of the Peruvian Central Coast and not that every development was caused by foreign influence. The implications of this work are regarding the way the researchers study the Lima style, how we read the stratigraphy at sites with this occupation and the fact that the distinctive fine paste is not decisive in the definition of the Nievería style.

La tesis se centra en el registro y análisis de las quilcas o el arte rupestre de la costa central del Perú, que el autor ha estudiado en más de 20 sitios arqueológicos en la zona yunga del departamento de Lima, principalmente en los valles de los ríos Chillón, Rímac y Lurín; incluyendo tangencialmente sitios en la costa norcentral hasta el valle de Supe. Entre los resultados de este trabajo se destaca la comprobación de un notable desarrollo cognitivo de las sociedades antiguas de Lima expresado en las quilcas, con un uso permanente de este tipo de manifestación cultural (petroglifos, pictogramas, geoglifos y arte mobiliar con tradición rupestre) durante toda la historia arqueológica de la región, desde aproximadamente los 3500 años aEC, hasta la invasión española. En el texto se expone una secuencia de 7 fases, en las cuales destaca una serie de relaciones culturales, que articula las quilcas con importantes procesos sociales, como la formación del Estado temprano en Supe-Caral, el impacto de la civilización Chavín en la costa central, el desarrollo de los pictogramas a partir de la formación de los desarrollos regionales tempranos (cultura Lima), o la extensión social en la época Ychma, cuyas quilcas perduraron hasta el Tahuantinsuyu. Un aspecto sustancial de este estudio es la identificación de lo que se ha planteado como la primera escritura andina, sucedida durante la fase 2 de la secuencia, y cuya evidencia ha sido obtenida en 11 sitios estudiados en la costa central; evidencia que constituye la prueba de un avanzado sistema de comunicación gráfica, nunca antes registrado en los Andes. La tesis concluye en el extraordinario valor de las quilcas, como un documento arqueológico y como testimonio del avanzado desarrollo cognitivo de las gentes de Lima, durante toda su historia autónoma.

Mortuary remains within an archaeological context can illuminate the social and political aspects not only of the individual(s) buried, but also of the living who interred them. Although this is so, a consensus has not been reached in regard to the following questions: how can we determine the social identity of the living that interred the dead? What are the implications of the living-dead interaction, and how do mortuary practices alter social memory in order to fit political needs? This thesis constitutes an initial attempt to answer these questions while examining pre-internment mortuary practices, and associated ideologies regarding the afterlife based on data collected during the 2015 field season by members of the Proyecto de Investigación Arqueológica Panquilma (PIAP), under the direction of Dr. Enrique Lopéz-Hurtado, of the Instituto de Estudios de Peruanos Programa de Investigación. This project is centered at the Late Intermediate Period (LIP) to Late Horizon (LH) secondary Ychsma site of Panquilma in the mid-Valley of the Lurín River Valley, Central Coast of Peru.

This research aims to determine the time period and significance of a puzzling structure that was excavated at the cemetery’s margin at Panquilma in order to determine the building’s potential role in ancestral veneration practices of the lesser-elites. Upon first glance this structure appeared to have a layout of a household structure but was located near the cemetery, far from the residential center of the site. A wide array and substantial quantities of exotic and/or ritual items such as sheet metal fragments, colorful bird feathers, orpiment, and manuports, as well as Spondylus sp. and Nectandra sp. beads were discovered within this building suggesting non-mundane or non-domestic usages. Was this structure used in the preparation and care of the funerary bundles? Did it house an important figure (e.g., a shaman) in both their life and death? Or did it serve as a workshop for preparing ritual items? In an effort to ascertain the significance of this structure, this thesis examines the aforementioned remains as well as its relative location and the results from portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF) analyses of some of the excavated artifacts in order to provide a deeper understanding of mortuary practices at Panquilma and thus the Ychsma’s concept of and interaction with the dead on the Central Coast of Peru.

The exact function of this structure cannot be concretely stated, but the diverse lines of evidence present appear to favor the first hypothesis in which this structure functioned as a funerary preparation area, but principally for elite and/or ritually significant bundle(s). This was ascertained due to the numerous exotic and/or ritual artifacts found associated within this Inkaic structure that likely served a ritualistic function in regard to water and agricultural fertility as well as serving as indirect evidence for elite ancestral veneration practices.

Resumen El presente artículo examina las prevalencias y patrones de los traumatismos de probable origen intencional presentes en 256 individuos Lima Tardío (Huaca 20 y Copacabana), comparando los resultados con los de 45 individuos Lima Medio (Cerro Culebra) y 30 individuos del Horizonte Medio 2 a 4 (Miramar), buscando dilucidar si los cambios políticos y sociales experimentados durante la transición al Horizonte Medio pudieron haber ocasionado un alza en los episodios de violencia vividos por las poblaciones locales. Los resultados de esta investigación indican que al parecer la introducción wari en la Costa Central significó una disminución de los episodios de violencia no letal, especialmente para las mujeres, con ocasionales episodios de enfren-tamientos más violentos que conllevaron a la muerte. Esta situación parece haberse mantenido una vez consolidada la presencia (o influencia) imperial. Asimismo, se observó que los niveles y patrones de violencia durante la transición y consolidación wari en la Costa Central fueron distintos que los experimentados en la costa y sierra sur, deduciéndose a partir de esto que la presencia wari en las zonas periféricas no siempre desencadenó las mismas consecuencias sociales, obedeciendo posiblemente a las distintas estrategias políticas de expansión por parte de dicho estado. Abstract LEVELS AND PATTERNS OF VIOLENCE DURING THE TRANSITION INTO THE MIDDLE HORIZON ON THE CENTRAL COAST OF PERU is article examines the patterns and prevalence of trauma in 256 Late Lima individuals. is assemblage of human remains comes from the sites of Huaca 20 and Copacabana and was compared to 45 Middle Lima individuals from the site of Cerro Culebra, as well as 30 individuals from the Middle Horizon 2 and 4 (Miramar). Other investigators have proposed that social and political changes during the transition into the Middle Horizon on the Central Coast of Peru might have caused an increase in episodes of violence in the local population. e results of this investigation, however, show that this transition witnessed a reduction in of non-lethal episodes of violence, especially for women, with occasional episodes of more violent and lethal clashes. is situation seems to have been maintained with the consolidation of Wari imperial presence (or innuence). ese observations for the Central Coast contrast heavily with those made for patterns of violence in the South Coast and Highlands during the same period. It is thus proposed that Wari presence in peripheral zones did not always trigger the same social consequences, possibly as the result of distinct political strategies of expansion utilized by the Wari state.

The Field Museum’s (FM) osteological and artifact collection from Ancón, Peru amassed by George Dorsey in 1891 represents one of the best-preserved archaeological assemblages from this important Central Coast site.  Over the last century, however, mummies and grave goods have become disassociated from one another and their archaeological context lost.  This paper reports on recent efforts to reconstruct the Ancón grave lots using FM archival materials.  Two case studies are presented in detail, highlighting both the successes and limitations of the project.  Ultimately, the results of this study illustrate the enormous potential that the FM collection has to improving our understanding of Ancón’s Middle through Late Horizon occupations and underscores the need for scholars to place greater energy into investigating understudied museum assemblages.

The article focuses on pleated textiles from sites of the central coast of Peru. Normally considered as belonging to the colonial period these textiles are shown to be most probably of prehispanic origin. Three complete shirts with pleated bib-like parts illustrate that the pleated textiles considered here do belong to a new type of shirt. Another characteristic of this new shirt type are horizontal neck and arm openings, a trait shared with some shirts reported to have come from Late Intermediate or Late Horizon sites of the central coast. Shirts with horizontal arm and neck openings have been found only on the central coast ofPeru and it is argued, that this particular
detail can be interpreted as a sort of an "ethnic marker".

This research was conducted in Cañete, Lima (Peru), in order to characterize avocado and tangerine farms. From the 55 members of the Farmers Association of Cañete, dedicated to these crops, a sample (n = 48) was selected to conduct a survey about technical, environmental and socio-economic aspects. The results indicated that the farms are of variable extension, intensive management, average high dependence on external inputs, being 81.25% of the farmers oriented to agro-exports, which demands the implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and fulfill provisions of the National Service of Agrarian Health (SENASA) on the control of fruit flies, especially Ceratitis capitata. Additionally, 4.17% of farmers dedicated small extensions to basic crops and breeding animals 14.58% for consumption. The cluster analysis by the Ward method with a square Euclidean distance set to eight formed five groups. The first group included farms 3, 5, 33, 41, 47 and 48, which belong to tangerine producers-exporters with instruction level as technicians, complete services, more than 21 ha of crops, productive costs superior than PEN 15 000.00, yields exceeding 45 t ha-1.

The Preceramic site of Pernil Alto is located on the desertic Andean foothills of Southern Peru. It dates to 5800-5000 cal BP and with that to the end of the Middle Preceramic Period of the Central Andes. It was possible to detect the transition from foraging to agriculture starting at around 5300 cal BP in the permanent village of Pernil Alto. With these results, early village agriculture is evident in Southern Peru, which in turn contributes to an overall understanding of the emergence of the first complex societies
in the Central Andes.

En el presente artículo discutiremos cómo se ha interpretado el cambio social
en la cultura Lima durante la historia de investigación sobre esta cultura y buscaremos
mostrar cómo, de manera directa o indirecta, los investigadores han tendido
a explicar este cambio planteando una serie de dicotomías en las cuales el cambio
social es fruto de un desarrollo local o del contacto con lo foráneo; o también, que
dicho cambio se sustentó en el dominio agrícola y en la centralización económica o
en la participación de las élites en redes internacionales de prestigio, como si toda
la cultura Lima hubiese respondido como una unidad a un solo tipo de estímulo y
proceso, sin tener en cuenta su diversidad interna.
Proponemos que una manera más provechosa de interpretar estos cambios es
pensándolos dentro de un marco que nos permita traspasar escalas y grupos sociales
y, asimismo, reconocer las estructuras y organización sociopolítica lima, pero también
la práctica de los actores que, en los distintos niveles, interpretan, rebaten y
trasforman estas estructuras.
