To review the empirical literature to identify the activities, time spent and engagement of hospital managers in quality of care. A systematic review of the literature. A search was carried out on the databases MEDLINE, PSYCHINFO, EMBASE, HMIC. The search strategy covered three facets: management, quality of care and the hospital setting comprising medical subject headings and key terms. Reviewers screened 15,447 titles/abstracts and 423 full texts were checked against inclusion criteria. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed on 19 included articles. The majority of studies were set in the USA and investigated Board/senior level management. The most common research designs were interviews and surveys on the perceptions of managerial quality and safety practices. Lifestyle factors (eg, smoking, diet) and compliance with screening recommendations play a role in cancer risk, and emerging technologies (eg, new vaccines, genetic testing) hold promise for improved risk management. However, optimal outcomes from cancer control efforts require better preparation of health professionals in risk assessment, risk communication, and implementing health behavioral change strategies that are vitally important to cancer control. Although physician assistants (PAs) are substantively engaged in cancer-related service delivery in primary care settings, few models exist to facilitate integration of cancer control learning experiences into the curricula used in intense, fast-paced, 24- to 30-month PA training programs.

I discuss the predicament that engineering-ethics education in Japan now faces and propose a solution to this. The predicament is professional motivation, i.e., the problem of how to motivate engineering students to maintain their professional integrity. The special professional responsibilities of engineers are often explained either as an implicit social contract between the profession and society (the “social-contract” view), or as requirements for membership in the profession (the “membership-requirement” view). However, there are empirical data that suggest that such views will not do in Japan, and this is the predicament that confronts us. In this country, the profession of engineering did not exist 10 years ago and is still quite underdeveloped. Engineers in this country do not have privileges, high income, or high social status. Under such conditions, neither the social-contract view nor the membership-requirement view is convincing. As an alternative approach that might work in Japan, I propose a pride-based view. The notion of pride has been analyzed in the virtue-ethics literature, but the full potential of this notion has not been explored. Unlike other kinds of pride, professional pride can directly benefit the general public by motivating engineers to do excellent work even without social rewards, since being proud of themselves is already a reward. My proposal is to foster a particular kind of professional pride associated with the importance of professional services in society, as the motivational basis for professional integrity. There is evidence to suggest that this model works.

I am not a big fan of meta-critiques, but James Stieb's article ''A Critique of Positive Responsibility in Computing''[1] includes claims that I judge to be overstated and should be challenged. Stieb's article also discusses at least three important questions that I think should be further explored.

The question of whether clinical ethics consultants may engage in patient advocacy in the course of consultation has not been addressed, but it highlights for the field that consultants' allegiances, and the boundaries of appropriate professional practice, must be better understood. I consider arguments for and against patient advocacy in clinical ethics consultation, which demonstrate that patient advocacy is permissible, but not central to the practice of consultation. I then offer four recommendations for consultants who engage in patient advocacy, and consider the implications of this issue for the field.

Partnerships among local public environmental health (EH), emergency preparedness and response (EPR) programs, and the communities they serve have great potential to build community environmental health emergency preparedness (EHEP) capacity. In the study described in this article, the beliefs and organizational practices pertaining to community EHEP outreach and capacity were explored through key informant (KI) interviews (N = 14) with a sample of governmental EH and EPR administrators and top-level managers from Riverside and San Bernardino counties in Southern California. The results indicate that KIs were highly confident in their workforces' efficacy, ability, willingness, and motivation to directly engage local communities in EHEP. Best practices to combat organizational and systematic barriers to community EHEP outreach were identified. Zum Einstieg in den Polizeiberuf und zu Erwartungen und Motiven zu Beginn der Polizeiausbildung liegen in der Schweiz bislang nur vereinzelt Befunde wissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen vor. Anlässlich der Einführung der zweijährigen Ausbildung hat das Schweizerische Polizei-Institut zusammen mit der Universität Lausanne und der Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften eine Befragung an zwei Polizeischulen zu diesen Themen durchgeführt. Erreicht wurden dabei 141 Aspirantinnen und Aspiranten. Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt die zentralen Befunde der Befragung vor. Die ursprüngliche Idee, die angehenden Polizistinnen und Polizisten über den gesamten Zeitraum ihrer Ausbildung zu begleiten, konnte aufgrund der besonderen Situation der Corona-Pandemie zunächst nicht weiterverfolgt werden. Anhand einer neuen Ausbildungskohorte des Jahrgangs 2020/2021 wird das Forschungsdesign mittlerweile aber umgesetzt. Das Projekt dient dabei als Pilotprojekt für eine mögliche schweizweite Studie.

This study explores how dentists explain the concept of social responsibility and its relationship to issues affecting access to oral health care by vulnerable segments of the population. Analysis of open-ended interviews with thirty-four dentists, including dental educators, and administrators and officials of dental public health programs in Canada and the United States revealed that four main themes-economics, professionalism, individual choice, and politics-influenced the respondents' sense of social responsibility in dentistry. There was a belief that social responsibility in dentistry is dominated by economic imperatives that impact negatively on the policies and practices directing access to care. Yet, despite the highly critical stance on dentistry as a business, there was practical recognition of the economic realities of dental practice. In Korea, until recently, both physicians and pharmacists were allowed to prescribe and dispense drugs for outpatient care. Along with other deep-rooted structural problems, this worked against the quality and efficiency of the health care system. To rectify this problem, the Korean government launched a drug policy reform in July 2000. However, the drug policy reform was more drastic than initially intended--driven by political factors, the reform ended up bringing about complete separation of medical institutions and pharmacies. Also, unlike in many other countries, Korea did not take a gradual approach, but instead, it implemented the reform all at once and nation-wide. As a result, the reform has faced criticism and protests, thereby generating unprecedented social turmoil and even strikes by physicians. Clinical pharmacy in a hospital setting is relatively new in Sweden. Its recent introduction at the University Hospital in Uppsala has provided an opportunity for evaluation by other relevant professionals of the integration of clinical pharmacists into the health-care team.
