School libraries

How can you get future teachers and school lbrarians to know and use local public libraries? The author who is a teacher trainer (library science, reading education, children's literature)  at the  University College of Teacher Education Styria (Padagogsche Hochschule Steiermark) is covinced that it is necessary to deepen the emotional attachment between teachers and libraries.

This article is a bibliographic review of
the scientific production published internationally
from 2010 until the middle of 2019
on the concept of School Library. The objective
was to establish an updated status of the
issue on the most relevant research in the
school library area. In order to achieve this,
a systematic methodology of bibliographic
selection was applied in four search engines
using descriptors related to the research
objective. Therefore, a document bank consisting
of 70 titles was obtained. This bank
served as the basis of the scientific evidence
of the review. The results obtained indicated
that the main tasks of the school library are
to promote the reading habit, to offer various
reading media and to facilitate metacognitive
learning in any area of the school curriculum.
To achieve this, teachers and librarians
must unify efforts in order to turn
the school library into a pillar of the school’s
educational project. Likewise, it is necessary
to look for alliances in the social environment
and to develop activities that boost the
school library and in which families are also
involved.

Perpustakaan adalah lembaga yang bergerak di bidang jasa penyedia informasi yang berorientasi pada kebutuhan pengguna. Selain penyedia informasi, perpustakaan juga sebagai  salah satu sumber belajar dalam proses pembelajaran. Dan salah satu jenis perpustakaan  adalah perpustakaan sekolah yang dapat membantu sekolah dalam mencapai tujuannya. Perpustakaan sekolah ini mempunyai berbagai peran dan tujuan untuk membantu siswa dan guru menyelesaikan tugas dalam proses kegiatan belajar. Diantaranya perpustakaan sekolah  mampu menumbuhkan kecintaan siswa dalam membaca, memperbanyak pengalaman belajar siswa, melatih untuk bisa bertanggung jawab, serta membantu guru dalam menemukan  sumber pengajaran. Dalam melaksanakan kegiatannya, perpustakaan sekolah diharapkan mampu menyebarluaskan informasi atau bahan pustaka kepada para pengguna sehingga bisa memberikan layanan yang maksimal ketika mencari informasi yang dibutuhkan para siswa  dan guru. Perpustakaan sekolah dapat memungkinkan siswa memiliki dan mengembangkan  kreativitas, minat, dan bakat dalam melakukan berbagai kegiatan di perpustakaan. Dengan beragamnya peran dan tujuan perpustakaan sekolah, maka pustakawan perlu dituntut untuk bersikap ramah, selalu bersedia dalam memberikan jawaban dari pertanyaan para siswa dan guru. Di samping itu, perpustakaan sekolah juga perlu meningkatkan kualitas layanan,pengadaan bahan pustaka, dan menjaga kondisi perpustakaan, sehingga pengunjung merasanyaman dan menikmatinya. Dengan demikian, perpustakaan sekolah mampu melaksanakantujuan dan fungsinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi literatur dengan cara mencari informasi melalui buku, artikel, dan jurnal untuk dijadikan bahan bacaan.

The article offers suggestions on how school librarians can engage students to reflect more on their learning experience. It defines reflection as an intellectual exercise to recall and evaluate experiences in order to plan future actions. The authors suggest the use of exit tickets, an assessment method that asks students to consider how and what they have learned, in order to develop a better level of understanding.

Objetivou-se averiguar como se insere a biblioteca escolar e o bibliotecário no Plano Nacional de Educação (PNE), promulgado através da Lei Federal 13.005/2014. O estudo se justifica pelo fato de que os atuais paradigmas sociais, educacionais e tecnológicos demandam do cidadão competências em busca, recuperação, avaliação e uso da informação, registrada em seus variados suportes, para a resolução de problemas, e que o ensino de tais competências é inerente ao profissional bibliotecário. Além disso, a necessidade de refletir, a luz da literatura, as contribuições do bibliotecário na biblioteca escolar tendo em vista a lei federal nº12.244 que torna obrigatória a presença desse profissional em todas as bibliotecas do país até o ano de 2020. Buscou-se na revisão bibliográfica o aporte teórico pelo qual se esclarece o que se entende por biblioteca escolar e seu papel educativo. Buscou-se também, na análise de conteúdo da Lei Federal 13.005, os aspectos relativos a biblioteca e bibliotecário contemplados no PNE. Considera-se, à luz dos resultados da pesquisa, que o letramento informacional consiste num processo pelo qual se supre as demandas sociais por competências em informação e que a biblioteca é entendida, no contexto das políticas nacionais de educação como um espaço educativo e cultural que fomenta a qualidade da educação básica.

Blogs and online social networks are handy web 2.0 tools which can be easily incorporated into an academic library’s user service profile. The inherent features of these applications help library professionals to reach out to new generation users at their own space and time. Blogs are easy to create, maintain and cost free solutions to disseminate information on library resources and services. Social networks allow the library to facilitate collaborative learning and resource sharing. Emergence of social media as  an important channel for interaction, communication, collaboration, sharing and creation of new knowledge among the academic communities made it relevant for libraries also. The present paper discusses how blogs and social networks can be exploited as user centric service tools in academic libraries by studying the content and analysing the effectiveness of library blogs and social networks created and maintained by Kendriya Vidyalaya Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram.

Traditionally libraries of schools have been underserved by the competent institutions and underused, since they have been regarded as mere points of consulting manuals for making jobs, to solve problems and, occasionally, as a place for reading mandatory recommended books in different subjects. As a result of the unavoidable educational purposes generated by the knowledge society, the situation has to change, changes that should result in an urgent reform of the education system, focusing on active and independent learning, as well as the full integration of information and communication technologies to allow continuous education throughout life, e-learning and information literacy of all citizens. Therefore, school libraries demand a reorientation, since students have to devote much of their time preparing their own learning pathways and to be competent in virtual learning.

En este articulo se intenta exponer breve y claramente la situación de las bibliotecas escolares en España desde el pasado a la actualidad, reseñando una breve historia desde el siglo XV a 1975, continuando con la legislación autonómica, nacional y supranacional, finalizando con el caso concreto de la Biblioteca del IES Mare Nostrum, ejemplo de esfuerzo y trabajo para intentar plasmar en la praxis lo reflejado en el papel pese a los vacíos legales existentes.

Abstract:
In this article is tried to expose brief and clearly the situation of the school libraries in Spain from the past to the present time, reviewing a brief history from century XV until 1975, continuing with the autonomic, national and supranational legislation, finalizing with the tactical mission of the Library of the IES Mare Nostrum, example of effort and work to try to shape in praxis the theory about school libraries in spite of the existing legal emptiness.

Genrefication in libraries is a huge topic with librarians, and nowhere is this felt more than in the school libraries. But with numbers of librarians looking to participate in this rearrangement of library stacks, question still remain. What are best methods of genrefying the collection? Can it be used with fiction and non-fiction? Is there a clear impact on circulation, and are these impacts positive or negative? This paper looks to other papers on genrefying as well as looks into libraries that have taken the steps to change their libraries and the impact these changes have had on the user populations.

El modelo de biblioteca integrada, o joint use library, propone el establecimiento de alianzas cooperativas entre bibliotecas de distinto tipo, normalmente públicas y escolares, para desarrollar su labor conjuntamente, pero sin perder su propia identidad. La propuesta se sustenta en una concepción de biblioteca única que nace y se planifica con más de una función, y ofrece a sus usuarios servicios bibliotecarios diferenciados dentro de una misma instalación, buscando la optimización de espacios y recursos.
Esta noción de unidad de información destaca por su enorme flexibilidad y su fácil adaptación a las necesidades y peculiaridades de cada población. Cuenta con un importante bagaje histórico y una notable presencia en lugares como Australia, Canadá, Estados Unidos, Reino Unido o Suecia, donde goza del beneplácito de sus respectivos gobiernos estatales y sus asociaciones profesionales. Este reconocimiento deriva en la elaboración de documentos legislativos, normas, pautas, recomendaciones y otras herramientas de utilidad que propician y promueven su desarrollo.
El presente libro ofrece orientación práctica a los lectores-profesionales que deseen plantear un proyecto de biblioteca integrada o conocer la verdadera dimensión de un modelo de biblioteca tan infrautilizado como desconocido en nuestro país.

Library is building to collect various written and recorded information from various types such as books, journals, theses, dissertations, magazines, newspapers, maps, and others. Libraries have many types, one of them is the school library. The school library is located in the school environment and its management is based on each school concerned. The school library is the main source of knowledge and learning information for students and educational staff and educators. In the school library, of course, there is a separate management, especially during a pandemic like now, every school must start rethinking the right policies in helping the process of preventing and transmitting the corona virus in the library when the library operates starting from managing the organizational structure objectives to be achieved, policies implemented, procurement, preservation, and management of collections, facilities, and infrastructure.

By the last five minutes of class, the students are packing up their notebooks, pens, and books. Some even started packing up ten minutes before class was over. They pick up their bags and wander over to the door ofthe library and wait for the bell to ring, chatting about the weekend, having already forgotten all about the research they had just been doing. The next time they come back to the library, which may be tomorrow, or in a week, it will likely take them ten minutes just to remember where they left off and what they need to do next. Is this a familiar scene for you? Do you often feel that your students are not very invested in their research when they come to the library? How would a more intentional emphasis on personal reflection help students learn? Este informe de práctica es el resultado de la ejecución del PILEO propuesto para la Sede Escuela Seguros Bolívar de la Institución Educativa Gilberto Alzate Avendaño. En este trabajo se pretende rediseñar el PILEO en conjunto con la I. E. para responder a las necesidades de lectura de la comunidad escolar en apoyo al PEI, para ello se utilizó la metodología de lecturas en voz alta, se realizaron diagnósticos de la biblioteca escolar con el fin de apoyar en la organización de las colecciones y realizar propuestas para el servicio de préstamo y formato de inventario. Los resultados obtenidos fueron la realización de actividades de animación a la lectura en estudiantes de preescolar y primero de primaria, la ejecución de una charla sobre promoción y animación a la lectura para docentes, la creación de los formatos de préstamo e inventario para la biblioteca escolar. Se concluye que los docentes deben continuar con capacitaciones sobre promoción y animación a la lectura, la biblioteca escolar requiere de un practicante para la organización y puesta en marcha de los servicios bibliotecarios.

Resumen: Enseñar a leer y escribir es relativamente fácil, pero no lo es tanto crear y consolidar hábitos lectores. Para conseguir lectores comprometidos es necesario trabajar la lectura en diferentes contextos y con múltiples estrategias. Las bibliotecas han sido, tradicionalmente, uno de los contextos desde los que se ha democratizado el acceso a los libros y se ha promocionado la lectura. En este trabajo hacemos un recorrido por los diferentes tipos de bibliotecas (escolares, públicas y universitarias) y su forma de promocionar la lectura. Asimismo, el desarrollo de las tecnologías de la información e internet han multiplicado los escenarios desde los que se lee y se promociona el libro. Debemos tener en cuenta que nos encontramos ante un escenario diverso y cambiante, en el que confluyen tradición e innovación, y en el que el compromiso fundamental de las bibliotecas debe ser formar lectores competentes y críticos. This article considers the implementation of the Australian Curriculum in the context of school libraries. It reviews key roles of school library staff as outlined in 'Learning for the Future: developing information services for Australian schools', 2nd edition (2001), and considers what priorities face teacher-librarians and school leadership teams in ensuring the school library successfully supports learners and teachers in selecting, organising and facilitating access to curriculum resources at the school level.

Education has been proven to be a weapon for the development of attitudes and values which are capable of building a nation. Commenting, Bamigbola (1990) stressed that education today is an important legacy which any responsible nation must strive to bequeath to its citizens. For schools to be meaningful and purposeful, they must be adequately equipped and staffed. A nation is incapable of growing if illiterates outnumber those who are literate pupils.

Research has found that LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum improves the school experiences and achievement of all students, LGBTQ and straight. The school library has a unique opportunity to support a safe learning environment and provide a more accurate representation of the diversity of the world through LGBTQ inclusion. This paper provides school librarians working in a variety of cultural and political settings strategies to support LGBTQ inclusion through identifying barriers, reviewing library policies, assessing the information needs of LGBTQ students, providing access to information, and promoting LGBTQ inclusion in the library and in the classroom.

Literature review exposed that an understanding of the Vietnamese students reading habits and their preferences would help related stakeholders to take necessary measures for reading promotion, book publication and design library services in Viet Nam. This study aimed to
investigate Vietnamese students’ desired leisure activities which are related to their attitudes, purposes, preferences and tastes in reading and library habits.
Quantitative methodology and questionnaire approach were followed for this study. A total of 631 usable responses received, comprising 244 university and 387 high school students. The study revealed that reading is still a considerable leisure choice among Vietnamese students
besides browsing the Internet; listening to music; socializing with friends and watching TV. Moreover, in-depth data analysis show that less than 10 percent school and university students are keen on using their school, university and local public libraries as their reading venues.

The study also identified causalities for the slow improvement of the reading habits of Vietnamese students. These are the availability of so many Internet-based leisure options; schools and universities are less operational to make reading a central element of learning, and the limited possibilities for libraries reaching out the broader community to nurture reading and library habits at an early age. It is suggested that more strategic and innovative library activities with proactive service staff are needed to increase library users and help them cultivate reading
habits in Viet Nam.

Modernisation of present day society largely depends on the numbers of individuals using internet as a part of their daily life. India is going through the important phase of modernisation with the help of revolution in Information and Communication Technology and " Digital India " scheme launched by Indian government. Since around 60% of the total population lives in rural or suburban regions, so it seems to be very challenging to project the idea of digital India to such populations. Here the term " Digital Divide " comes into the picture which states about the disparity between information-rich and information-poor people. Government schemes like 'Digital India' project are an approach towards diminishing the digital divide. Libraries as a social service institution has to play a major role in minifying the gap of digital divide. They can impart crucial role in making India a global digital power. Librarians and information professionals have to develop certain user-oriented skills and redefine their service menu. This paper aims to outline the different areas in which librarians can work together to minimize the gap of digital divide in rural as well urban regions. It also discusses the possible causes for the digital divide in India. Keeping all the important factors of above mentioned topics, this paper highlights the basic concept of digital divide and role of librarians in uplifting the socioeconomic status of the common people. ___________________________________________________________________________

A obra reúne ensaios de pesquisadores que discutem variadas reflexões sobre leitura e literatura endereçada a crianças e jovens, articulando questões teóricas e práticas. Nossa expectativa é que E-book seja recebido como um presente e que, por meio de sua divulgação, chegue a todos interessados, professores, pesquisadores, mediadores de leitura e bibliotecários.

This study was conducted to the grade 10 students of Saint Vincent’s Academy which consisted of 53 respondents. The respondents were 27 female and 26 male in accordance to their gender which was 53 in total. The respondents was supposedly be 63 but due to the reason of some student being absent in the given date of conducting the survey only 53 respondents were able to cooperate in the research. The study was able to determine the fact that the Saint Vincent’s Academy has an Academic library which uses a Dewey Decimal System of where in it is a proprietary library classification system first published in the United States by Melvil Dewey in 1876. Originally described in a four-page pamphlet, it has been expanded to multiple volumes and revised through 23 major editions (Dewey, Melvil 1876).

The result of the research shows that high school students from grade 10 at Saint Vincent’s Academy agreed to “sometimes” go to the library “during their vacant time” specifically  47% of them. A majority of 57% of students stated that “sometimes” they go to the library to do research. Also 36% of the students stated to “sometimes” go to the library when they’re looking for answers in their assignments. Meanwhile 60% of the grade 10 students agreed to “always” visit the library to “relax their minds”. And lastly 40% of the students have the common reason of “recreation” to “sometimes” visit the library

The research also showed that the most preferred type of book of the grade 10 high school students is Historical books with the leading 91% of readers. And the most disliked book among the academic book is the Mathematical book with only 9%. And only 47% of the grade 10 high school students stated that when they visit the library they read their preferred books. With these data the researchers came to a conclusion that although the grade 10 high school students have a seemingly high general average the number of their times of visit proves that the library still lacks some facilities and services. The minority of percentages in the interest of reading a book serves evidence in saying that the school’s library has lapses in providing students a place for learning. The research was conducted only to provide knowledge and understanding of both teacher and student and has no further personal issue about the matter.

Sekolah pada tingkatan dasar dan menengah merupakan pondasi bagi pembentukan karakter dan keberhasilan generasi muda di masa yang akan datang. Berbagai strategi dan fasilitas untuk meraih keberhasilan dalam proses pendidikan dan pendidikan menjadi penting bagi sekolah. Perpustakaan, adalah salah satu elemen penting sebagai bagian dari strategi dan fasilitas yang terkadang luput dari perhatian para pengambil kebijakan di sekolah.
Masalah prioritas kebijakan dan pengambil kebijakan, sumber daya manusia, tempat/ruang, sumber daya koleksi, dan manajemen adalah hal-hal klasik yang perlu segera mendapat perhatian dari berbagai pihak. Tak kurang organisasi dunia maupun pemerintahpun mengeluarkan kebijakan dan landasan hukum yang diharapkan mampu mengurai masalah-masalah tersebut. Manifesto tentang perpustakaan sekolah oleh UNESCO/IFLA, UU Perpustakaan, Permendiknas tentang Standar Tenaga Perpustakaan Sekolah/Madrasah, dan Standar Nasional Indonesia tentang Perpustakaan sekolah adalah produk-produk yang diharapkan menjadi pedoman dan panduan bagi adanya perpustakaan dan pengelolaan perpustakaan sekolah yang lebih baik. Sehingga ke depan, perpustakaan sekolah dapat benar-benar menjadi elemen penting bagi keberhasilan proses pendidikan dan pembelajaran di sekolah atau pendidikan tingkat dasar dan menengah.
Tulisan ini mencoba memotret, mengurai dan menjelaskan bagaimana seharusnya perpustakaan sekolah dikelola agar fungsinya yang mendukung keberhasilan proses pendidikan dan pembelajaran di sekolah dapat tercapai.

Abstract
Library anxiety has been identified as a contributory factor to poor academic performance among students, and libraries are being challenged to give serious consideration to this phenomenon in order to develop strategies for reducing the problem. This study sought to determine if there were any indicators of the presence of library anxiety among a sample of 150 undergraduates in the faculty of Humanities and Education at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus and some of the factors contributing to this condition. The findings indicated
the presence of library anxiety of short-term duration among the students due to both personal and institutional factors. Some personal factors included a lack of the relevant information literacy skills, absence of previous library experience, ignorance of the capability and extent of the library information retrieval systems and confusion when trying to find their way around the library. Institutional factors included the relatively large size of the library, the layout and organization of floors and collection, unavailability of computers and lack of appropriate signage. Recommendations were made to help alleviate the problems that appear to have triggered library anxiety.

After four short years as a public secondary school teacher-librarian, I see an urgency to the changing of my role. Much of the shift has occurred with the advent of Web 2.0, but as corporations rush to fill market gaps, and school budgets shrink, public education risks dismantling its democratic core. There is a race happening to keep up with the latest trends in educational technology. A choice to spend limited resources on the same device or software reinforces the message that all students learn the same. This doesn't reflect a teacher or student‟s individuality in choosing the right tool for the right job. This choice doesn't put pedagogy or learning first. There are pitfalls in this urgent approach to integration including only exposing our students to a surface level of technology which won‟t allow them to fully understand the social, economic and environmental implications of our impulses. The role of teacher-librarian is critical in protecting the vision of democracy by advocating for the minimization of the digital divide and the emphasis of pedagogy. 

In my move from the classroom to the library, I was surprised to find that the library culture was territorial and competitive. Access to resources was controlled, availability of technology and librarian support were limited and equity was a constant struggle. One day I noticed a student using my old-fashioned lab, facing a wall and elbow-to-elbow with strangers on either side, waiting for his group members to begin collaborative work on his computer. He pulled out his iPad to read from his notes, and his phone to text his classmates asking them when they would arrive. To be doubly sure they were on their way, he opened up Facebook on his screen and messaged all of them inside their group space. His teacher came over and told him to stop playing around and to get to work. The teacher believed that the student was being unproductive.

It has taken me 5 years to get the library space and culture to a place wherethere is no need for "shushing‟. We still experience the feelings of scarcity, but generally the new learning commons is a place where learning happens and we celebrate student success. In many ways this paper on transliteracy is about my journey in understanding the complexities of technology integration in schools and my battles to keep these ideas foremost apparent in my learning commons: access, availability, and equity.

This article describes the process of developing standards for Brazilian school libraries. It presents the principles, theoretical framework and crit eria upon which such standards were based. The main goal of the standards is to help schools implement the Law 12244/2010, which determines
that, as of 2020, each Brazilian school must have its own library. More broadly, the standards allow comparative studies that may support public policies aimed at improving the quality of education. The standards may contribute to the creation of quality libraries in every school in the country, or in other words, towards each school having a true library.

Este artigo tem como objetivo descrever o processo de
elaboração dos padrões para bibliotecas escolares brasileiras.
Apresenta os princípios, referenciais teóricos e critérios que
os embasaram. O objetivo principal dos padrões é apoiar
as escolas no processo de implementação da lei 12244, que
determina que, num prazo de 10 anos, cada escola conte
com uma biblioteca. Levando-se em consideração que a
referida lei aborda apenas genericamente o conceito de
biblioteca escolar e que seu único indicador numérico é a
quantidade de títulos que deve compor o acervo - um para
cada aluno matriculado - os padrões visam a complementar
a lei e contribuir para que cada comunidade escolar possa
estabelecer o perfil da biblioteca de sua escola. Em nível
mais amplo, os padrões permitem estudos comparativos que
apóiem políticas públicas que visem à melhoria da qualidade
da educação, considerando-se que boas bibliotecas escolares
constituem elementos que influenciam positivamente o
ensino básico. Os padrões contribuirão para que o processo
de universalização das bibliotecas nas escolas do país se dê
com qualidade, ou seja, para que cada escola conte com uma
biblioteca de verdade.

The purpose of this study is to understand the present status of the secondary school librarians in Bangladesh. In general, it is found that although librarianship is not a new concept in Bangladesh, the development of school libraries and to create qualified school library professionals has been slow due to lack of government initiative. Many schools, where there are libraries and librarians, resources and services are minimal and school librarians are not considered teaching staff.

This study derived significant findings which could be used to understand the reality of secondary school libraries and librarians in Bangladesh. The recommendations could also be used to overcome practical issues which may negatively affect school library development in Bangladesh.

The present study aimed to establish the state-of-the-art of the research on school library in Brazil, between 1975 and 2011, trying to identify: its subjects, theoretical foundations, methodology, results and conclusions. A documentary analysis was made, using seventy research reports on school library, divided into six categories of analysis: the school library as a learning space, integration of teacher/librarian, user studies, collection, reading and inquiry learning. The results revealed that exist an awareness of the need to secure the space of the library in the school, considering that it can contribute to the learning process. There is a bigger number of studies in the subject of reading, although there seems to be a trend in the increasing of inquiry learning topic. The studies on teacher/librarian collaboration reaffirmed the need of teacher/ librarian collaboration. User studies are still stuck with a traditional approach, failing to perform an effective dialogue with pedagogical issues. The methodologies of the studies were mostly qualitative and the theoretical foundations were weak, resulting from the lack of clarity of its use.

O objetivo deste estudo foi o estabelecimento do estado da arte da pesquisa sobre biblioteca escolar no Brasil, entre 1975 e 2011, buscando identificar: assuntos pesquisados; embasamento teóricoconceitual; metodologias e técnicas utilizadas; resultados e conclusões dos estudos. A metodologia foi análise documental de setenta relatos de pesquisa sobre o tema, separados em seis categorias: biblioteca escolar como espaço de aprendizagem, interação bibliotecário/professor, estudos de usos e usuários, coleção, leitura e pesquisa escolar. Os resultados revelaram que existe consciência da necessidade de se garantir o espaço da biblioteca na escola, considerando-se que ela pode contribuir para a aprendizagem. Há mais estudos na categoria leitura, e tendência no aumento da categoria pesquisa escolar. A necessidade de trabalho conjunto professor/bibliotecário foi reafirmada. Os estudos de uso e usuários ainda estão presos a abordagem tradicional, não conseguindo realizar um diálogo efetivo com a questão pedagógica. As metodologias dos estudos analisados foram em sua maioria qualitativas e o referencial teórico apresentou fragilidade, resultante da pouca clareza de seu uso.
