A growing body of evidence suggests a protective role of vitamin D on the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We investigated this relationship in a population sample from one Australian state. The data of 3,393 Australian adults aged 18-75 years who participated in the 2009-2010 Victorian Health Monitor survey was analyzed. Socio-demographic information, biomedical variables, and dietary intakes were collected and fasting blood samples were analyzed for 25, hydroxycholecalciferol (25OHD), HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and lipid profiles. Logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the association between tertiles of serum 25OHD and categories of FPG (<5.6 mmol/L vs. 5.6-6.9 mmol/L), and HbA1c (<5.7% vs. 5.7-6.4%). Field-scale studies that examine the potential for adverse effects of Bt crop technology on non-target arthropods may supplement data from laboratory studies to support an environmental risk assessment. A three year field study was conducted in Brazil to evaluate potential for adverse effects of cultivating soybean event DAS-81419-2 that produces the Cry1Ac and Cry1F proteins. To do so, we examined the diversity and abundance of non-target arthropods (NTAs) in Bt soybean in comparison with its non-Bt near isoline, with and without conventional insecticide applications, in three Brazilian soybean producing regions. It was estimated that 1.2 million people live with HIV/AIDS in Zambia by 2015. Zambia has developed and implemented diverse programs to reduce the prevalence in the country. HIV-testing is a critical step in HIV treatment and prevention, especially among all the key populations. However, there is no systematic review so far to demonstrate the trend of HIV-testing studies in Zambia since 1990s or synthesis the key factors that associated with HIV-testing practices in the country. Mapping Research and Innovation in Jamaica represents the thirteenth country profile produced by UNESCO’s Global Observatory of Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy Instruments (GO-SPIN), marking the first volume on a Small Island Developing State. The series aims to deliver nuanced insights regarding science, technology, and innovation (STI) policies through a robust assessment framework.This comprehensive analysis delineates the evolution of STI policy in Jamaica from the late 1960s to the present, compiling statistical data and inventories of core policy instruments and the institutional ecosystem. These findings, which serve as a solid foundation for nuanced STI policy analysis, illuminate current STI policy dynamics within Jamaica, revealing substantial implications for its future direction. Central to Jamaica’s national development framework, Vision 2030 Jamaica, is the crucial role of research and innovation in enhancing economic growth and bolstering global competitiveness. The 2022 National Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy critiques identified challenges and proposes strategic policy interventions to strengthen linkages among key stakeholders, advancing the diffusion of science, engineering, technology, and innovation activities across the economic landscape. This policy underscores research and innovation as foundational pillars for transitioning Jamaica into a technology-enabled society, emphasising the urgent need to achieve the STI objectives outlined in Vision 2030.As per recent estimations, Jamaica’s gross expenditure on R&D (GERD) is around 0.07% of GDP, significantly lower than the average of 0.61% in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, the 2022 STI National Policy targets increasing GERD to 1.5% of GDP by 2029, a potential game-changer. Data from 2018 indicates Jamaica had 282 researchers per million population, predominantly within the higher education sector, notably with 90% of scientific output originating from the University of the West Indies. As of 2023, Jamaican authors contributed to 358 scientific articles indexed in the Scopus database, positioning the nation 140th globally and second within CARICOM. However, pursuing the STI objectives articulated in Vision 2030 is challenging. Key barriers include the scarcity of reliable data on the country’s research and innovation landscape, inadequate coordination among STI stakeholders, and ineffective networking mechanisms between academia, government, and industry. These issues are exacerbated by a lack of diverse funding sources, underdeveloped R&D infrastructure, and suboptimal human resource strategies within the STI sector. The report culminates in short- and medium-term recommendations organised across four strategic pillars to address these critical barriers to research and innovation for sustainable development in Jamaica.

The indigenous people of the Tibetan Plateau have been the subject of much recent interest because of their unique genetic adaptations to high altitude. Recent studies have demonstrated that the Tibetan EPAS1 haplotype is involved in high altitude-adaptation and originated in an archaic Denisovan-related population. We sequenced the whole-genomes of 27 Tibetans and conducted analyses to infer a detailed history of demography and natural selection of this population. We detected evidence of population structure between the ancestral Han and Tibetan subpopulations as early as 44 to 58 thousand years ago, but with high rates of gene flow until approximately 9 thousand years ago. This study explores the interactive pattern among social issue, academic research, and governmental policy on science and technology during the last 20 years. In particular, we try understand wether the science and technology policy research and governmental policy meets social needs appropriately. In order to do this, we have collected text data from news articles, papers, and governmental documents. Based on these data, social network analysis and cluster analysis has been carried out. According to the results, we have found that science and technology policy researches tend to focus on fragmented technological innovation meeting urgent practical needs at the initial stage. However, recently, the main characteristics of science and technology policy research shows co-evolutionary patterns responding to society. Furthermore, time lag also has been observed in the process of interaction among the three bodies. Based on these results, we put forward some suggestions for upcoming researches in science and technology policy. Firstly, analysis levels are needed to be shifted from micro level to mezo or macro level. Secondly, more research efforts are required to be focused on policy process in science technology and its public management. Finally, we have to enhance the sensitiveness to social issues through studies on agenda setting in science and technology policy.

OBJECTIVE: Regulating health behavior change often occurs in a dyadic context of romantic relationships. Dyadic approaches to standard health behavior change models are, however, barely considered. We investigated volitional processes of the Health Action Process Approach model for two health behaviors within a dyadic context of romantic couples. Specifically, we tested whether day-to-day volitional self-regulation predicted one's own and one's partner's cigarettes smoked (Study 1) and physical activity (Study 2). METHODS: In two dyadic intensive longitudinal studies (Study 1: 83 dual-smoker couples intending to jointly quit smoking; Study 2: 61 overweight couples intending to become physically active), heterosexual partners independently reported on intention, self-efficacy, action planning, and action control in end-of-day diaries. In Study 1, daily number of cigarettes smoked was assessed via self-report. In Study 2, daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was assessed objectively via accelerometers. In both studies, dyadic cross-lagged intensive longitudinal analyses based on the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model were applied. RESULTS: Across both studies, individual's own volitional self-regulation positively predicted one's own health behavior (less cigarettes smoked and more MVPA). One's partner's action control and intention also positively predicted one's own health behavior. A marginal partner effect for self-efficacy was found in the context of smoking only. CONCLUSIONS: Behavioral self-regulation is not only relevant for individuals themselves, but some volitional processes may spill over to their partners. This highlights the need to specify couple-level processes involved in health behavior change, and to consider a social context of self-regulation.

Peyronie's disease (PD) is a connective tissue disorder which can result in penile deformity. The prevalence of diagnosed PD in the United States (US) has been estimated to be 0.5% in adult males, but there is limited additional information comparing definitive and probable PD cases. We conducted a population-based survey to assess PD prevalence using a convenience-sample of adult men participating in the ResearchNow general population panel. Respondents were categorized according to PD status (definitive, probable, no PD) and segmented by US geographic region, education, and income levels. Of the 7,711 respondents, 57 (0.7%) had definitive PD while 850 (11.0%) had probable PD. Using univariate logistic regression modeling, older age (18-24 vs 24+) (OR = 0.721; 95% CI = 0.570,0.913), Midwest/Northeast/West geographic region (South vs Midwest/Northeast/West) (OR = 0.747; 95% CI = 0.646,0.864), and higher income level (<25K vs 25K+) (OR = 0.820; 95% CI = 0.673,0.997) were each significantly associated with reduced odds of having a definitive/probable PD diagnosis compared with no PD diagnosis. When all three variables were entered in a stepwise multivariable logistic regression, only age (OR = 0.642; 95% CI = 0.497, 0.828) and region (OR = 0.752; 95% CI = 0.647, 0.872) remained significant. This study is the first to report PD prevalence by geographic region and income, and it advocates that the prevalence of PD in the US may be higher than previously cited. Further, given the large discrepancy between definitive PD cases diagnosed by a physician and probable cases not diagnosed by a physician, much more needs to be done to raise awareness of this disease.

Posturographic changes in motivational conditions remain largely unexplored in the context of embodied cognition. Over the last decade, sexual motivation has been used as a good canonical working model to study motivated social interactions. The objective of this study was to explore posturographic variations in response to visual sexual videos as compared to neutral videos. Our results support demonstration of a freezing-type response in response to sexually explicit stimuli compared to other conditions, as demonstrated by significantly decreased standard deviations for (i) the center of pressure displacement along the mediolateral and anteroposterior axes and (ii) center of pressure's displacement surface. These results support the complexity of the motor correlates of sexual motivation considered to be a canonical functional context to study the motor correlates of motivated social interactions.

Objective We reviewed the current literature regarding antiretroviral (ARV)-sparing therapy strategies to determine whether these novel regimens can be considered appropriate alternatives to standard regimens for the initial treatment of ARV-naive patients or as switch therapy for those patients with virologically suppressed HIV infection. Methods A search for studies related to HIV dual therapy published from January 2000 through April 2014 was performed using Biosis, Derwent Drug File, Embase, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, Medline, Pascal, SciSearch, and TOXNET databases; seven major trial registries, and the abstracts of major conferences. Using predetermined criteria for inclusion, an expert review committee critically reviewed and qualitatively evaluated all identified trials for efficacy and safety results and potential limitations. Results Sixteen studies of dual therapy regimens were critiqued for the ARV-naive population. Studies of a protease inhibitor/ritonavir in combination with the integrase inhibitor raltegravir or the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor lamivudine provided the most definitive evidence supporting a role for dual therapy.

The accumulation of findings that most responders in the ultimatum game reject unfair offers provides evidence that humans are driven by social preferences such as preferences for fairness and prosociality. On the other hand, if and how the proposer's behavior is affected by social preferences remains unelucidated. We addressed this question for the first time by manipulating the knowledge that the proposer had about the responder's belief concerning the intentionality of the proposer. In a new game called the "ultimatum game with ambiguous intentions of the proposer (UG AMB)," we made the intentionality of the proposer ambiguous to the recipient. We expected and found that the proposer would make more unfair offers in this new game than in the standard ultimatum game. This expectation can be derived from either the preference-based model or the strategy model of the proposer's giving decision. The additional finding that more unfair giving in the UG AMB was not mediated by the proposer's expectation that the recipient would be more willing to accept unfair offers provided support for the preference-based model. Using a psychological measure of cognitive control, the preference-based model received additional support through a conceptual replication of the previous finding that cognitive control of intuitive drive for prosociality in the dictator game, rather than mind reading in the ultimatum game, is responsible for the difference in giving between the two games.

Background Exposure to food odours increases the appetite for congruent foods and decreases the appetite for incongruent foods. However, the effect of exposure to a variety of food odours, as often occurs in daily life, is unknown. Objective Investigate how switching between sweet and savoury odours affects the appetite for sweet and savoury products. Design Thirty women (age: 18-45y; BMI: 18.5-25kg/m 2) intensely smelled the contents of cups filled with banana, meat or water (no-odour) in a within-subject design with four combinations: no-odour/banana, no-odour/meat, meat/banana and banana/meat. Participants received one combination per test day. In each combination, two cups with different fillings were smelled for five minutes after each other. Treatment order was balanced as much as possible. The effects of previous exposure and current odour on the appetite for (in)congruent sweet and savoury products, and odour pleasantness were analysed. A change from meat to banana odour or banana to meat odour was referred to as switch, whereas a change from no-odour to meat odour or no-odour to banana odour was no-switch. Results The current odour (P<0.001), as opposed to the previous exposure (P = 0.71), determined the appetite for (in)congruent sweet and savoury products, already one minute after a switch between sweet and savoury odours. The pleasantness of the odour decreased during odour exposure (P = 0.005).

Predictive studies are of paramount importance for biological invasions, one of the biggest threats for biodiversity. To help and better prioritize management strategies, species distribution models (SDMs) are often used to predict the potential invasive range of introduced species. Yet, SDMs have been regularly criticized, due to several strong limitations, such as violating the equilibrium assumption during the invasion process. Unfortunately, validation studies-with independent data-are too scarce to assess the predictive accuracy of SDMs in invasion biology. Yet, biological invasions allow to test SDMs usefulness, by retrospectively assessing whether they would have accurately predicted the latest ranges of invasion. We investigated whether and why the use of a foreign language influences moral judgment. We studied the trolley and footbridge dilemmas, which propose an action that involves killing one individual to save five. In line with prior work, the use of a foreign language increased the endorsement of such consequentialist actions for the footbridge dilemma, but not for the trolley dilemma. But contrary to recent theorizing, this effect was not driven by an attenuation of emotions. An attenuation of emotions was found in both dilemmas, and it did not mediate the foreign language effect on moral judgment. An examination of additional scenarios revealed that foreign language influenced moral judgment when the proposed action involved a social or moral norm violation. We propose that foreign language influences moral judgment by reducing access to normative knowledge.

Quantitative characterization of sulfur-containing petroleum derivatives is mainly limited by the large number of potential targets present and the matrix effects suffered due to the high carbon-containing matrices. Herein we describe the instrumental modifications required in a commercial GC-ICP-MS/MS instrument, and their corresponding optimization, aiming to turn it into a compound-independent quantitative technique for both total and speciation sulfur analysis in gasolines. Additionally, carbonderived matrix effects were made negligible for direct and fast total S analysis, making the use of relatively complex isotope dilution strategies not necessary anymore. Absolute detection limit of 0.3 pg S was achieved, which is, to the best of our knowledge, more than one magnitude order below the ones reported for other sulfur GC selective detectors. Precision was below 3% RSD. Total analysis was performed by flow injection analysis through a transfer line and external calibration, whereas speciation analysis was carried out by chromatographic separation and internal standardization. In both cases, simple generic standards were used, which enabled to get rid of specific S-containing standards (sometimes not available or/and unstable). The proposed method was successfully applied to total and speciation sulfur analysis of a commercial gasoline sample and validated with a certified reference material (ERM-EF213) gasoline. The approach has proved to be simple, fast, robust and convenient for implementation in routine laboratories as demonstrated by the successive analysis of 50 gasoline samples in 3 hours without any instrumental drift.

Luminescent carbon dots (Cdots) synthesized using inexpensive precursors have inspired tremendous research interest due to their superior properties and applicability in various fields. In this work, we report a simple, economical, green route for the synthesis of multifunctional fluorescent Cdots prepared from a natural, low-cost source: collagen extracted from animal skin wastes. The as-synthesized metal-free Cdots were found to be in the size range of ~1.2-9 nm, emitting bright blue photoluminescence with a calculated Cdot yield of ~63%. Importantly, the soft-lithographic method used was inexpensive and yielded a variety of Cdot patterns with different geometrical structures and significant cellular biocompatibility. This novel approach to Cdot production highlights innovative ways of transforming industrial biowastes into advanced multifunctional materials which offers exciting potential for applications in nanophotonics and nanobiotechnology using a simple and scalable technique.

Introduction Acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT) is associated with high mortality. The creatinine-based stage of AKI is considered when deciding to start or delay RRT. However, creatinine is not only determined by renal function (excretion), but also by dilution (fluid balance) and creatinine generation (muscle mass). The aim of this study was to explore whether fluid balance-adjusted creatinine at initiation of RRT is related to 28-day mortality independent of other markers of AKI, surrogates of muscle mass and severity of disease. Methods We performed a post-hoc analysis on data from the multicentre CASH trial comparing citrate to heparin anticoagulation during continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH). To determine whether fluid balance-adjusted creatinine was associated with 28-day mortality, we performed a logistic regression analysis adjusting for confounders of creatinine generation (age, gender, body weight), other markers of AKI (creatinine, urine output) and severity of disease. Sensitivity analysis applied to Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) as well as to other types of empirical ecological models allows assessing the importance of environmental predictive variables in affecting species distribution or other target variables. However, approaches that only consider values of the environmental variables that are likely to be observed in real-world conditions, given the underlying ecological relationships with other variables, have not yet been proposed. Here, a constrained sensitivity analysis procedure is presented, which evaluates the importance of the environmental variables considering only their plausible changes, thereby exploring only ecological meaningful scenarios. To demonstrate the procedure, we applied it to an ANN model predicting fish species richness, as identifying relationships between environmental variables and fish species occurrence in river ecosystems is a recurring topic in freshwater ecology. Results showed that several environmental variables played a less relevant role in driving the model output when that sensitivity analysis allowed them to vary only within an ecologically meaningful range of values, i.e. avoiding values that the model would never handle in its practical applications. By comparing percent changes in MSE between constrained and unconstrained sensitivity analysis, the relative importance of environmental variables was found to be different, with habitat descriptors and urbanization factors that played a more relevant role according to the constrained procedure. The ecologically constrained procedure can be applied to any sensitivity analysis method for ANNs, but obviously it can also be applied to other types of empirical ecological models.

Scientists are human. As such, they are prone to bias based on political and economic interests. While conflicts of interest are usually associated with private funding, research funded by public sources is also subject to special interests and therefore prone to bias. Such bias may lead to consensus not based on evidence. While appealing to scientific consensus is a legitimate tool in public debate and regulatory decisions, such an appeal is illegitimate in scientific discussion itself. We provide examples of decades-long scientific consensus on erroneous hypotheses. For policy advice purposes, a scientific statement or model should be considered as the subject of proper scientific consensus only if shared by those who would directly benefit from proving it wrong. Otherwise, specialists from adjacent fields of science and technology should be consulted.

Cancer research is an essential part of national cancer control programmes, and the emerging economies of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Russian Federation and Central Asia (R-CA) (Commonwealth of Independent States) remain relatively understudied. Here, we map the cancer research activity from the 29 countries across these regions over a 10-year period (2007-2016), using a standard scientometric approach. Research activity was compared with the countries&#39; wealth and with the disease burden from different cancers, and analyses were also performed by the research domain (e.g. fundamental cancer biology, surgery). We found that although there was a correlation between outputs and national wealth, there were many outliers; the CEE countries publishing relatively more, and the R-CA, less. An animal's home-range can be expected to encompass the resources it requires for surviving or reproducing. Thus, animals inhabiting a heterogeneous landscape, where resource patches vary in size, shape and distribution, will naturally have home-ranges of varied sizes, so that each home-range encompasses a minimum required amount of a resource. Homerange size can be estimated from telemetry data, and often key resources, or proxies for them such as the areas of important habitat types, can be mapped. We propose a new method, Resource-Area-Dependence Analysis (RADA), which uses a sample of tracked animals and a categorical map to i) infer in which map categories important resources are accessible, ii) within which home range cores they are found, and iii) estimate the mean minimum areas of these map categories required for such resource provision. We provide three examples of applying RADA to datasets of radio-tracked animals from southern England: 15 red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris, 17 gray squirrels S. carolinensis and 114 common buzzards Buteo buteo. The analyses showed that each red squirrel required a mean (95% CL) of 0.48 ha (0.24-0.97) of pine wood within the outermost home-range, each gray squirrel needed 0.34 ha (0.11-1.12) ha of mature deciduous woodland and 0.035-0.046 ha of wheat, also within the outermost home-range, while each buzzard required 0.54 ha (0.35-0.82) of rough ground close to the home-range center and 14 ha (11-17) of meadow within an intermediate core, with 52% of them also relying on 0.41 ha (0.29-0.59) of suburban land near the homerange center. RADA thus provides a useful tool to infer key animal resource requirements during studies of animal movement and habitat use.

Visual inputs can distort auditory perception, and accurate auditory processing requires the ability to detect and ignore visual input that is simultaneous and incongruent with auditory information. However, the neural basis of this auditory selection from audiovisual information is unknown, whereas integration process of audiovisual inputs is intensively researched. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and superior temporal sulcus (STS) are involved in top-down and bottom-up processing, respectively, of target auditory information from audiovisual inputs. Thin films of pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) were shock compressed using the laser driven shock apparatus at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Two spectroscopic probes were available to this apparatus: visible white light transient absorption spectroscopy (VIS) from 400-700 nm and mid-infrared transient absorption spectroscopy (MIR) from 1150-3800 cm-1. Important PETN vibrational modes are the symmetric and anti-symmetric NO 2 stretches at 1280 and 1650 cm-1 , respectively, as well as CH stretches at ~2900 cm-1. Shock strength was varied from approximately 3 to 55 GPa to span from the chemically unreactive regime to the regime in which fast chemical reaction took place on the 250 ps time scale of the measurements. VIS and MIR results suggest irreversible chemistry was induced in PETN at pressures above 30 GPa. At lower shock pressures, the spectroscopy showed minimal changes attributable to pressure induced effects. Under the higher-pressure reactive conditions, the frequency region at the anti-symmetric NO 2 stretch mode had a significantly increased absorption while the region around the symmetric NO 2 stretch did not. No observable increased absorption occurred in the higher frequency regions where CH-, NH-, and OH-bond absorptions would be observed. A broad absorption appeared on the shoulder at the red-edge of the CO 2 vibrational band around 2200 cm-1. In addition to the experiments, reactive molecular dynamics were carried out under equivalent shock conditions to correlate the evolution of the infrared spectrum to molecular processes. The simulations show results consistent to experiments up to 30 GPa, but suggest NO and NO 2 related features provided the strongest contributions to the shocked infrared changes. Proposed mechanisms for shocked PETN chemistry are analyzed as consistent or inconsistent with the data presented here. Our experimental data suggests CO or N 2 O bond formation, nitrite formation, and absence of significant hydroxyl or amine concentrations in the initial chemistry steps in PETN shocked above 30 GPa.

Epoxy-based powder coatings are an attractive alternative to solvent-borne coatings. Here, inhouse synthesized low glass transition temperature (T g) particles containing epoxy resin and polymethyl methacrylate formed coatings at room temperature upon impact with a surface. Suspension polymerization was used to prepare particles as a function of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and methyl methacrylate ratios. Higher incorporation of DGEBA decreased the T g to below ~20°C and eliminated the need to heat the particles and/or aluminum substrates to form coatings. Using an electrostatic powder coating apparatus, a ~70% particle deposition efficiency was achieved on aluminum substrates heated to 200°C. Whereas, at room temperature, high-speed single particle impact experiments proved that particle bonding occurred at a critical velocity of 438 m/s, comparable to commercial cold spray technologies. The in-house synthesized particles used in this study hold potential in traditional and emerging additive manufacturing applications.

Background Even though health care seeking interventions potentially reduce child mortality from easily treatable diseases, significant numbers of children die without ever reaching a health facility or due to delays in seeking care in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess health care seeking behavior for common childhood illnesses and associated factors. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Jeldu District from January to February 2011. A systematic sampling method was used for sample selection. Data were collected from 422 caregivers with under-five children who experienced diseases within six weeks before the survey. Interviewer administered structured and pre-tested questionnaire which were used to collect data. Data entry and cleaning were carried out using Epi Info version 3.5.1 and analyzed using SPSS version 16. Descriptive analysis was done to determine the magnitude of health care seeking behavior. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify associated factors. Results A total of 422 caregivers of under-five children were participated in the study giving an overall response rate of 97.5%. Three hundred fifteen (74.6%) children sought care from health facilities for all conditions. However, only 55.4% of them were taken to health facilities as first source treatment during their illness and prompt care was also very low (13.7%). Marital status of the caregivers (AOR = 2.84; 95%CI: 1.62-4.98), number of symptoms experienced by the child (AOR = 2.04; 95%CI: 1.24-3.36) and perceived severity of the illness (AOR = 3.20; 95%CI: 1.96-5.22) were predictors of health care seeking behavior. Conclusion Health care seeking behavior for childhood illnesses was delayed and decision to seek care from health facilities was influenced by worsening of the illnesses. Thus, community

Sardine by-products generated during canning process entail a potential opportunity to drive them into a chain of high added-value compounds, while simultaneously decreasing the environmental impact of their discharge. This paper describes and discusses the biochemical variation of solid and liquid by-products generated during the canning process of sardine along one complete year. Additionally, by-products were also evaluated in terms of their degradation along time, monitored through microbiological and chemical analysis. Finally, their valorisation was ascertained through the recovery of lipid fractions rich in ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), as well as protein fractions with anti-hypertensive activity (ACE). The variability within biochemical composition of by-products along the year is significant, especially in terms of lipid content, and their degradation is strongly dependent on the conditions in which they were collected and stored. Both liquid and solid by-products present ω6/ω3 ratios between 0.05-0.18 and thrombogenic index between 0.27-0.57, whereas low-molecular-weight fractions of protein extracts (<3 kDa) exhibited the strongest ACE activity (IC 50 = 51 µg/ml). The potential viability of using liquid by-products as sources of functional ingredients is an interesting alternative to the management of these effluents in fish canning industry.
