Surnames

In the article I discuss how Norwegian men who have changed their last name in marriage to their wife's, react to the reactions from others. The unusual choice of using the wife's name in marriage amongst Norwegians lead to a variety of reactions. Here, I look at how the men negotiate manliness in relation to humorous reactions, mainly from other men of whom they are not related, and the ideals of manliness expressed through the humour and the men changers reactions to the humorous remarks.

Few Norwegian men change their surnames as part of a heterosexual couple. My aim was to understand the meanings men attach to surnames in heterosexual relationships by studying four central topics in men’s surname stories – family, continuity and tradition, gender equality, and individual identity. West and Zimmerman’s perspective of doing gender with their concept of accountability guided the analysis, as well as the concept of manliness/unmanliness developed by Ekenstam and Lorentzen. The main material I analysed consisted of the responses to two qualitative questionnaires – one open for all Norwegian readers and one directed at surname changers identifying as Norwegian heterosexual males. I also interviewed male surname changers. Under the topic of family, three subthemes were connected to the nuclear family. First, surname change functioned to separate marriage from cohabitation. Second, sharing surnames helped to create the nuclear family. Third, a divorce might sever the ties between husband and wife and thus surnames might be reverted. The next three subthemes dealt with the family of origin. First, for male surname keepers the previous generations were important and meaningful. Second, the ideal of carrying on the surnames, i.e. the family names, also played a part for
changers, especially if there were no (male) heirs to their wife’s name. Third, there was a potential for conflict between male changers and their fathers. Male surname change invoked associations of betrayal or breakage of a gendered duty to carry the surname on. The seventh of the family subthemes dealt with negotiations of their relationship with the nuclear and the birth families through surnames.
The second main topic was continuity with the past. The understanding that tradition equals patronymy, i.e. a practice where men keep their surname, women take the name of their husband, and children get the name of their father, dominated in the narratives. Most male keepers adhered to this understanding. Male changers opposed patronymy as tradition, either because they knew of older practices or because they felt that the past should not have authority over the present. Some
male changers did neither. They spoke of alternative traditions in line with gender equality, while drawing on past practices, such as the idea of sharing a family name and carrying on a name from previous generations, also through female lines.
The third main topic was gender equality. The men’s narratives could be divided into four categories. The first category included male keepers who described gender equality as a woman’s right to keep her name. The second category consisted of changers and keepers. They understood surname choice as relevant for men and women, meaning both birth names could function as a shared surname. The third category consisted of some of the male changers who saw their change as a way to counter the historical and cultural discrimination of women. The fourth category was by far the largest and consisted of changers and keepers who did not touch on aspects of gender equality in their responses. For the changers and some keepers, gender equality in the naming of the nuclear family was inherent. However, most of the keepers took the practice of patronymy for granted.
The fourth main topic was individual identity, where four different approaches were followed in the men’s stories. In the first approach, the connection between an individual and their name was unbreakable. In the second approach, time played a part in the connection between the individual and the name, as some changers spoke of increased ownership as time passed. In the third approach, some of the changers
displayed independence from their names. They argued that they continued to be the same individual even if their name changed. In the fourth approach some of the men changed their name because of what kind of person they saw themselves as. The connection between name and individual was here reversed. These men considered themselves as individuals with certain ideals and abilities that led them to think about
choice in certain ways, hence they could change their names.
In sum, the men positioned themselves within each theme on two scales according to how they did accountability. The first scale was between a nuclear family orientation and an individual orientation, and the second scale was between a gender equality orientation and a patronymic orientation.
In addition, I used a quantitative questionnaire to understand the extent of male surname keeping and changing in the present-day Norwegian context. The quantitative research confirmed that women and men differed in naming actions. A total of 91.2% of the men and 47.2% of the women kept their surnames, while 4.2% of the men and 46.6% of the women took that of their partner. Around 2% of both groups used a hyphen to combine their surnames.

Many names were changed spontaneously in language contact situations according to the name stock of the dominant community in Hungary in the old centuries. In the 19th century, nationalism gave rise to a new linguistic ideology aiming at uniting the 'nation'. Surnames became also ethnic symbols, thus the concepts of the assimilation of linguistic/ ethnic minorities and the changing of surnames of foreign origin joined together. The paper gives an account of the linguistic and onomastic factors of this phenomenon, and the historical, social, ideological background of the process. It focuses on the assimilation of minorities and its consequences concerning their personal names in Hungary, a lot in common with similar processes of other countries, in the 19 th and 20 th century.

Os nomes e os apelidos constitúen a carta de presentación dunha persoa perante a sociedade. Pero, ó mesmo tempo, forman parte do patrimonio familiar, posto que nos vinculan cos nosos devanceiros, e mais do patrimonio colectivo, pois son mostra da historia do noso pobo. A antroponimia galega foi formada na Idade Media, e ó longo da súa traxectoria unha parte dela foi interferida polo castelán. Neste volume analízanse diversas perspectivas da estandarización, que só moi recentemente se comezou a acometer: aspectos xurídicos, lingüísticos, a normalización lingüística e o seu papel no textos literarios e nos medios de comunicación audiovisuais.

The paper rereads conclusions of the "Genèse médiévale de l’anthroponymie moderne" research team about surname’s birth. It was not a sharp and definitive shift, but a slow and conflicting process. Rather than looking for precocity or backwardness along the set course to the birth of modern surname, it is necessary to acknowledge the several forms of “double name” spread through high and late medieval Italy. They were due to the shared need to tell apart individuals in a more and more interrelated and dense society. We can grasp two different models of “double name”: a North-Italian one, grounded on “surname”, and a Central-Italian one, grounded on “patronymics chains”. The different chronology of “Feudal Revolution” in the two areas may explain this gap. When “double names” spread in Northern Italy during 11th century, there were a lot of seigneuries bannales; hence aristocrats got their toponymic surnames. Then other people followed them along the same path. On the contrary, in Central Italy “Feudal Revolution” was contemporaneous with (or later than) birth of “double name”. So, “double name” developed along early medieval models, firmly grounded on patronymic.

The genealogical tables of the more important Irish royal dynasties of the early and also later Middle Ages. There are 76 tables, compiled from annalistic, genealogical and other sources, with references to these sources and genealogical tables published in secondery literature up to 1994.

Ovaj rad će predstaviti bosanskohercegovačka prezimena koja su motivirana nazivima obuće i odjeće, njihovim oblicima, promjenama, načinima na koje su se javljali odjevni stilovi i mijenjali jedni druge, tokom dugog perioda bosanskohercegovačke historije. Danas je, kao i u historiji, bivanje bez odjeće ili nagost znak sramote, imanje odjeće ili odjevenost znak zaštite od vanjskih utjecaja, a njezina kavkoća znak reprezenta, te ne čudi činjenica da su lekseme iz semantičkoga polja tekstilija inspirisale domaćega čovjeka da se preko njih identificira. S tim u vezi, cilj ovoga rada je: 1. ekscerpirati odjevne motive u bosanskohercegovačkim prezimenima i utvrditi njihovu etimologiju, 2. definirati funkciju i način tvorbe prezimena tog tipa, 3. utvrditi čestotnost i locus njihove rasprostranjenosti i 4. doprinijeti većem interesu za onomastička istraživanja, kako bi se i na tom bosnističkome polju radilo intenzivnije i sistematičnije.

Il contributo propone alcune note e riflessioni storico-linguistiche ed etimologiche sui cognomi del Friuli Occidentale (ex provincia di Pordenone), occupandosi in particolare della loro notevole variabilità sia in senso diacronico che sincronico, della scomparsa di numerosi cognomi, della diffusa poligenesi e dei più alti ranghi di frequenza sul territorio considerato. Sono inoltre studiati alcuni casi particolari, come la situazione nel capoluogo Pordenone, i cognomi doppi, frequenti ad Aviano, Frisanco e Maniago, e quelli che derivano da toponimi, i cognomi collegati a Gerusalemme e ai Turchi e quelli portati da coloro che sono qui immigrati da altre regioni d’Italia e dall’estero. 

In the present paper, some considerations on surnames in Western Friuli (former province of Pordenone) are put forward through the lenses of history, linguistics and etymology. The focus is on the diversity of surnames in this area, both diachronically and synchronically, the extinction of several surnames, the widespread phenomenon of polygenesis, and frequency rankings in Western Friuli. Some specific cases have also been investigated, including the landscape of surnames in the town of Pordenone, the double surnames frequently found in Aviano, Frisanco and Maniago, as well as family names originating from place names, those related to Jerusalem and the Turks, and surnames of people moving from other regions of Italy and of foreign immigrants.

Mitologija i fantastika, kao interferirajući elementi daleke prošlosti, proži-maju se sa savremenim jezikom, a dodirna tačka im nije samo usmena književnost nego i onomastika. Ti elementi, iako prividno pohranjeni u prošlosti, revitaliziraju se u novim oblicima kao prezimena. U radu se analizira semantika tih prezimena, uz etimološka i tvorbena rješenja. Kako se od mitskih motiva više ne tvore prezimena, jer  je ta kategorija odavno zatvorena, ovakva specifična prezimena su vrijedna naučnoga proučavanja i korpusnoga pozicioniranja. Zato, izvorno navedeni, opisani i analizira-ni, primjeri u ovome radu imaju značajno filološko, etnološko i antropološko blago.

U radu su analizirani oblici prezimena militarnoga porijekla u Bosni i Hercegovini. Građa koja je poslužila kao izvor za analizu prezimena u ovome radu ekscerpirana je iz naučnih studija i rječnika bosanskohercegovačkih prezimena, i telefonskih imenika sa prostora Bosne i Hercegovine koji su nastajali u periodu od 1960. do 2007. godine. U tvorbenoj analizi bh. militarnih prezimena je moguće utvrditi dva postupka: a) izravno imenovanje u odnosu na realije iz militarne domene bez tvorbenoga čina i b) posredno imenovanje (po pretku) tvorbenim činom. S obzirom na semantičke realije koje su služile kao motivi u procesu imenovanja, utvrđeni su sljedeći tipovi prezimena militarnoga porijekla: prezimena po vojnoj službi, prezimena po oružju
u vojnim redovima, prezimena po zatečenome stanju (paćenička, mučenička ili stradalna prezimena i prezimena po somatskome nedostatku) i prezimena po raslojavanju porodice. Nositelji militarnih prezimena imenovani su s obzirom na zanimanje / vojnu službu, bez obzira na etničku i vjersku pripadnost.

In the paper, the surnames of military origins in Bosnia and Herzegovina are given and analysed. The examples in this paper are excerpted from the scientific studies and dictionaries of Bosnian- Herzegovinian surnames and the telephone directories of Bosnia and Herzegovina published in the period from 1960 to 2007. In the formation of military surnames, it is possible to establish two ways: a) direct naming in relation to military motive, without formation; and b) indirectly naming (by the name of the father or grandfather) with formation by suffixation. With regard to their semantic realia which surved motives in the process of naming, the following types of military surnames are given: surnames by military rank, surnames by the use of the weapons, surnames by the status (martydom or victim surnames and surnames by somatic disadvantage), and surnames by family stratification.

La conversazione si è tenuta il 10/6/2022 nell'ambito della settima edizione della “Lunga Notte delle Chiese”, evento di carattere nazionale che ha visto l’apertura serale dei luoghi di culto. Il tema per il 2022 è stato “IN-CONTRO” due parole apparentemente contrapposte ma che in realtà esprimono l’elemento centrale e significativo del dialogo, ossia quello della diversità. Il programma generale delle iniziative promosse insieme ai volontari parrocchiali del territorio, avrà quindi come filo conduttore quello dell’incontro e della condivisione. Nel quadro delle iniziative organizzate per l'occasione dalla Parrocchia di Cittaducale -Diocesi di Rieti-, ci sono state le aperture straordinarie di alcune delle chiese cittadine nel corso delle quali la comunità ha accolto e accompagnato i visitatori alla loro scoperta, veri e propri scrigni di arte e di devozione, un'occasione di incontro tra membri della stessa comunità e allo stesso tempo un modo per far conoscere e approfondire la storia e le tradizioni di Cittaducale. La “Lunga Notte delle Chiese” si è presentata così come un’occasione di conoscenza e di riscoperta di un territorio, quello angioino, caratterizzato da piccole entità di straordinaria bellezza, ciascuno custode di un patrimonio unico fatto di arte, di tradizioni e di fede che merita di essere valorizzato a pieno. I luoghi coinvolti nell’iniziativa sono stati:

(Double surnames from the Aviano and Pordenone area) The present paper investigates the double surnames commonly found in three municipalities in the province of Pordenone: Frisanco, Maniago, and Aviano, on which a special focus is laid. Double surnames are a branch of research relatively new to scholars of onomastics. At an unspecified time – possibly after Friuli became part of Italy in 1866 – some family nicknames have been juxtaposed to surnames in official writing. No regular pattern can be identified, hence the presence within these communities of simple and compound surnames, the latter being sometimes hyphenated.

This was a paper given at the Back to Our Past, Genetic Genealogy conference in the RDS in October 2015. It represents an update of a previous paper entitled "Blood of the Dubliners" benefiting particularly from recent archaeological publications.

Soyadı, kişinin kimliğini ve aidiyetliğini belirten önemli bir unsur, kişinin kimliğinin ayrılmaz parçasıdır. Vazgeçilemez, devredilemez, feragat edilemez bir kişilik hakkıdır. Bu nedenle soyadına ilişkin hak yasalarda özel olarak düzenlenmiş ve korunmuştur. Ne var ki bu hak ülkemizde kadınlar için sadece evlenene kadar geçerli kılınmaktadır. Evlenen kadına, sadece kendi soyadını kullanma hakkı tanınmamakta, en iyi ihtimalle kocasının soyadını da almak zorunda bırakılmaktadır. Bir başka deyişle kadının evlendikten sonra yalnızca kendi soyadını taşıma hakkı yoktur. Bu durum, en başta Anayasamızın 10. maddesinde ifade edilen “Herkes dil, ırk, cinsiyet, siyasi düşünce, felsefi inanç, din ve mezhep ayrımı gözetilmeksizin kanun önünde eşittir. Hiçbir kişiye, aileye, zümreye veya sınıfa imtiyaz tanınamaz.” şeklindeki eşitlik ilkesine aykırıdır. Kaldı ki Türk Medeni Kanunu’nda yer alan “Kadın evlenmekle kocasının soyadını alır” şeklindeki emredici hükmün yanında, eşlerin soyadını birlikte seçmelerine olanak sağlayacak irade özgürlüğüne de yer verilmemektedir. Oysa soyadı, kişinin temel kişilik hakkı olarak görülüyorsa, yalnızca erkeklere değil, kadınlara da tanınmalıdır. Kaldı ki yaşam nasıl hızlı bir değişim içindeyse yasalar da bu ölçüde yaşamın gereksinimlerine göre yaşlanmakta ve değişime uygun olarak değişime ihtiyaç duymaktadır. Yasalar önünde eşitlik temel alındığında, evlenmekle sadece kadının kimliğinin, hatta kütük bilgilerinin değişmesi, bir başka deyişle medeni hal değişikliğinin sadece kadını etkilemiş olması hem Anayasa’da öngörülen eşitlik ilkesine hem ülkemizin onayladığı uluslararası sözleşmelerden kaynaklanan taahhütlerine aykırı düşmektedir. Kaldı ki bu uluslararası sözleşmelerin iç hukukumuzdaki kanunlardan daha üstün tutulduğu Anayasa’nın 90. Maddesi’nde belirtilmektedir.
Bu çalışmada, üniversite öğrencisi kadınların, TMK’nın 187. Maddesi olan kadının soyadına ilişkin kanun kapsamında, evlendikten sonra kendi soyadlarını korumaya yönelik ne düşündükleri ve cinsiyet eşitliği çerçevesinde soyadı kanununu nasıl değerlendirdikleri üzere bir araştırma yapılmıştır. Araştırma kapsamında, Karabük Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi Ebelik Bölümü’nde “Kadın Statüsü ve Sorunları” isimli ders alan ikinci sınıf öğrencilere açık uçlu sorulardan oluşan anket yapılmıştır. Ortaya çıkan bulgular çerçevesinde kadının soyadı hakkı irdelenmiştir. Genel olarak denilebilir ki üniversitelerde verilen kadın çalışmaları ve kadın haklarına ilişkin derslerin, kadınlara birey olarak hakları ve toplumsal cinsiyet eşitliği konusunda önemli derecede farkındalık aşılamaktadır.

Abstract
Surname is an important element, which defines personal identity and an inseparable part of a person’s identity. It cannot be abandoned, alienated or abdicated. For this reason, the right of surname is especially arranged and protected in laws. However, unfortunately, this right is valid for women in our country merely until their marriage. Women have to adopt their husbands’ surname after marriage or at best they have to carry double surnames by adopting spouses’ surname with their own surname. In other words, women do not have right to keep their own surnames after marriage. This situation is primarily contradictory to our 10th Article of the Constitution, which is based on the principle of equality. 10th Article of the Constitution is as “Everyone is equal before the law without distinction as to language, race, color, sex, political opinion, philosophical belief, religion and sect, or any such grounds. Men and women have equal rights. The State has the obligation to ensure that this equality exists in practice. Measures taken for this purpose shall not be interpreted as contrary to the principle of equality.” Other than that, according to the Turkish Civil Code, women will adopt her husband’s surname after marriage. Moreover, it is not allowed couples to choose a surname together. But if surname supposed to be a unique right of identity, it should be accorded not only to men but also to women. Furthermore as life conditions changes rapidly, laws need to be revised and reconstructed according to changing requirements. Thus, this enforcement regarding women’s surname contradicts the principle of equality.
In this study, in order to understand university student women’s tendency about changing their surname after marriage and their perception about surname, a written survey with open-ended questions was conducted among students in Karabük University, Midwifery Department in Health Sciences Faculty. These woman students consist of sophomores who take a course named “Women’s Problems and Status”. Within the framework of findings, the right of woman’s surname was examined. Generally it can be concluded that courses about women rights and gender studies given in universities rise awareness of students.

ABSTRACT:
The digitization of the 1901 and 1911 Irish population censuses
has prompted renewed interest in them as sources for economic and social history.
This paper highlights what they tell us about the regional spread of Irish surnames, and what  those surnames reveal about Irish cultural history.

The paper carries out a typological-statistical analysis concentrating on the 100 most common surnames in Hungary, focusing on certain methodological aspects, which have received less than due attention in earlier studies. The research also aims to point out some characteristics of the surname stock in question in comparison with other European surname systems. The majority of European countries significant efforts have been, or are being made to describe the structure, composition and geographical distribution of their surname stock. The findings, unsurprisingly, show noteworthy differences, which are often linked to national borders and the historic-geographic presence of a language and its speaking community.  Similar studies have to be carried out in several countries, based on the most representative name corpuses and using a similar methodology - presupposes large-scale international cooperation and coordination efforts.

Într-un articol precedent am supus analizei antroponimele utilizate de maramureşeni pe parcursul secolului al XIV-iea, însă despre poreclele lor nu am discutat. Cu toate că acestea sunt în număr mic, ele trebuie semnalate şi aduse în atenţia atât a cercetătorilor Evului Mediu în Maramureş, cât şi al publicului larg iubitor de istorie. Asemănător numelor propriu-zise şi poreclele au o "viaţă" a lor, ele se "nasc" din dorinţa cuiva de a alinta pe cineva iubit (punând accent pe trăsăturile pozitive în primul rând), de a-şi bate joc de cineva neagreat (scoţându-se în prim-plan viciile, defectele fizice etc.), de a face haz de o altă persoană (chiar şi între prieteni), ori în urma unor întâmplări deosebite şi I sau marcante din viaţa unui individ. Apoi, poreclele pot să evolueze şi să se transforme în supranume (de familie, porecla fiind un supranume personal), în acest caz fiind utilizate şi de alţi membri ai familiei celui poreclit, de regulă din generaţiile următoare, sau pot să dispară pur şi simplu odată cu trecerea la cele veşnice a purtătorilor iniţiali. La rândul lor, supranumele s-au transformat de multe ori în nume de familie, o bună parte dintre numele de familie contemporane avându-şi originea în porecle şi supranume de familie I de neam...

The processes of adulteration of the surnames in Galicia by influence of Spanish language began in the XVI century. In this paper the criteria of restitution of standard forms in the Dictionary of the Galician surnames (in preparation) are explained, with abundant exemplification with specific surnames, including historical documentation, linguistic explanation and geographical distribution.

Surnames originating from ethnonyms form a characteristic part of the Hungarian surname stock, in comparison to other European nations. They make up at most 0.5% of the surname stock, yet their proportion is 7-8%. Among the 10 most frequent surnames, 3 are of this type: Tóth (= Slav, Slovak), Horvát (= Croat), Német (= German). In this paper an analysis is presented of this surname category: the background and motivations for their creation, their history, and the characteristics of their geographical distribution.

Fin dal XIV secolo, tanto la sequenza nome-cognome quanto il solo cognome di Giovanni Boccaccio hanno conosciuto una varietà di forme: Giovanni di Boccaccio, Giovanni Boccaccio, Giovanni Boccacci, Boccaccio, Boccacci. L’articolo si propone di analizzare la distribuzione cronologica e geografica di queste forme e il loro uso nella tradizione letteraria, grammaticale e lessicografica, nel tentativo di stabilire per quali vie si sia giunti alla situazione attuale (solo Giovanni Boccaccio per la sequenza nome-cognome; solo Boccaccio per il cognome).

L'argomento principale di questo libro è il cambiamento, sociale, politico, ma soprattutto economico. La domanda al centro dell'indagine riguarda i meccanismi di funzionamento del cambiamento economico in una piccola comunità della montagna bergamasca, un contesto che, secondo il senso comune, dovrebbe essere caratterizzato dall'immobilismo e dalla marginalità. Il caso di Castione, come tanti altri, ci costringe a mettere in dubbio alcune convinzioni che tendiamo a volte, per pigrizia, a dare per scontate. Come quella che esista un contrasto insanabile tra il mercato e il guadagno privato da una parte e forme di gestione collettiva e di condivisione comunitaria delle risorse dall'altra. O quella che ogni processo di innovazione economica non possa che venire dalla città. O che una società "tradizionale", fondata su una delicata trama di relazioni orizzontali e verticali e su uno stratto rapporto con l'ambiente naturale, non possa gestire e indirizzare il mutamento, economico, sociale e culturale, ma sia destinata a implodere e a disgregarsi di fronte ad esso. Paper given at Research day, Mary Immaculate College, 2nd  September 2014.  The paper looks at the ethnic diversity of medieval Limerick surnames in the light of geneticists conclusions that the population of the west of Ireland is largely the result of Mesolithic migration and is only minimally affected by subsequent arrivals. A subsidiary conclusion is that the Norman surnames attested in the medieval colony are spread throughout the island  for the most part and are not limited to single geographical districts.

This is a paper given to a conference on Brian Boru held in TCD on April 11th 2014. It is a predecessor to a paper given in the RDS in October 2014 and there are certain areas of overlap. The main function of both papers is to explore the historical and genealogical justifications for the claims made about the nature of Dál Cais overlordship in a genetics paper by McEvoy et al. in “Genetic Investigation of the Patrilineal KinshipStructure of Early Medieval Ireland” published in American Journal of Physical Anthropology 2008

A talk on Irish surnames and other surnames used in Ireland: how they came into being, how they work, how they can be categorised and what they mean.  The talk focused mainly on Irish and Scottish Gaelic surnames, but mention was also made of English, Scots, Welsh and Manx names, as well as some from further afield.  This talk was given as part of "Discover the Irish Language", a day of talks and taster classes - 31st March 2018, organised by Gordon McCoy of Turas at the Skainos Centre, Newtownards Road, Belfast.

Priimek Šorgo izhaja s področja Dubrovnika v 13. stoletju in je romanskega izvora. Njegova
prvotna oblika je Sorgo /'sorgo/, kar najverjetneje izhaja iz besede za sirek. Po selitvi dela družine
na območje Istre je bil priimku na podlagi vpliva beneške italijanščine izgovor spremenjen
v /'ɕorgo/, kar je bilo v slovenščino in hrvaščino prevzeto kot Šorgo /'ʃorgo/.

In our paper we focus on the translating practice and translatability of surnames used in Hungarian, from the problems of translating the immediate predecessors of surnames to the questions of translating surnames today. Our main interest is in how multilingualism, language contact situations, language prestige considerations, customs, fashion and other potential factors affect the use of these names in different languages, and the translatability in a wider sense in the actual practice in Hungary and other countries. We shall look at name translation practice in medieval documents, the relevant questions of spontaneous and conscious surname changes, the changes of Hungarian surnames used outside of Hungary, and finally the questions of translating surnames occurring in fiction.

Potreba za lovom, kroćenjem i podređivanjem dovela je do toga da čovjek životinje ustrajno promatra, proučava njihovu anatomiju i ponašanje, i da su vremenom postale motivom čovjekova stvaranja u umjetnosti, slikanju ili klesanju u kamenu, i naročito književnome stvaranju: u legendama i basnama u kojima je u prvome planu drugovanje i prisni razgovori čovjeka sa životinjama što će odvesti do odnosa divljenja kroz koje čovjek oblikuje ambleme ili toteme. Medutim, najviša razina prisnosti ogleda se u činjenici da se čovjek počeo identificirati preko životinja, odnosno njihovih osobina. Prezimena motivirana životinjskim nazivljem uglavnom su hipokorističnoga postanja, eufemizmi snažnoga afektivnog naboja (svojevrsni zoo-afektivi) ili apotropejska prezimena. Pri tome, motivacija se realizira uglavnom posredno, metaforičkim odnosima, dok se u metaforićnim preslikavanjima nalaze domaće i divlje životinje, a najčešće ornitonimi-nazivi za ptice kojima se čovjek divi, od kojih strahuje ili od kojih ima korist. Druga plodna domena su krvoločne zvijeri npr. vuk, lav ili tigar.

Studies of Irish surnames and by-names have been based on the assumption that the language used in creating the surname represented the ethnic background of those who used it. This examination of records from 13th and 14th C Limerick makes it clear that the same individual could have his surname recorded in a variety of different languages and that suranme analysis is therefore no guide to original ethnic identity.

В статье производится обзор средневековых английских прозвищ и произошедших от них современных фамилий, обладающих христианскими ассоциациями за счет своей внутренней формы. Наиболее распространенный тип таких когноменов восходит к на-званиям церковных санов, чинов, иерархических должностей и профессий, связанных с церковью, которые выступали как обозначения соответствующего занятия человека (Clark < clerk 'клерк, дьяк') и затем могли передаваться в виде патронима (Vickerson < vicar 'священник-викарий'). Помимо этого, они указывали на работников священнослужителей и монастырей (Monkman < monk 'монах'), а также использовались как характеризующие прозвища людей, в чем-либо соответствующих стереотипным образам этих социальных ролей (Pope 'Папа Римский'). Менее распространенные, но более вариативные «событий-ные» когномены происходят от названий праздников, на которые приходятся дни рождения людей, получивших прозвища (Christmas 'Рождество'), и от обозначения ролей, которые их носители играли в средневековых церковных драмах (Herod 'Ирод')-важной части жизни общества в этот период времени. Еще одним подтипом «событийных» прозвищ были те, что происходили от излюбленных и часто повторяемых выражений человека-молитвенных присловий (Goodspeed < God speed 'Бог в помощь [тебе]') или, наоборот, клятв-ругательств. Логика статьи построена в соответствии с ономасиологическим подходом, предпринята попытка более точно определить возможную мотивацию некоторых прозвищ. C точки зрения механизмов номинации, в анализируемом материале преобладают метонимические переходы (в противоположность метафорическим), сравнительно невысока доля дезидеративных имен. В научный оборот вводится значительное количество языкового материала, в отдельных случаях отмечаются параллели с русскоязычными прозвищами, а также дается краткая характеристика возникновения английских прозвищ в целом. Публикация продолжает ряд статей автора, посвященных влиянию христианства на английское и в целом европейское имятворчество.

The article surveys Medieval English nicknames and the derivative modern surnames carrying Christian associations through their motivation. Most commonly, these nicknames would originally refer to a clerical order or offi  ce (e.g. Clark < clerk) and then subsequently take the form of a patronymic (e.g. Vickerson < vicar). Some of these are properly occupational, designating the offi  ce itself (e.g. Prest)or the relation to people in holy or monastic orders: a familial (the name could be inherited by legitimate or, after the 12th c., illegitimate, children) or working one (e.g. Monkman). Alternatively, such nicknames are metaphoric denoting peoplethat resembled priests, monks, etc. (e.g. Cardinal). A number of nicknames refer to diverse minor church offi  ces like sexton and chanter, as well as religiously and socially marked people like palmer. There is also the type of metonymic nicknames that describe the conduct of the bearer in religious and moral terms, e.g. as pious or prayerful (e.g. Holyman). Less widespread but more varied are “event-nicknames” under which heading the author subsumes what is traditionally called pageant names, from the alleged roles in Medieval drama (e.g. Herod), and names deriv-ing from church festivals (e.g. Christmas). Religious associations also appear in names derived from oaths and favourite phrases of the named persons (e.g. Godspeed). The array therefore puts on display a wide range of Medieval social roles and attitudes, and allows to speculate on their respective prominence. Parallels are drawn with Old Russian names and nicknames, and sev-eral alternative explanations or specifi cations for English nicknames are suggested.
