Beyond the undoubted propensity to defend and consolidate acquired
positions by force with the value of arms, the ‘Norman Conquest’ represents an
extremely significant moment for the study of war strategies and the armaments
adopted. Courage and audacity, combined with the value of arms, celebrated
the identity of the Normans, profoundly marking the history and civilisation of
Western Europe between the 11th and 12th centuries. The reasons for this success
are multiple, some related to favorable circumstances, others to the political and
military prowess of the commanders. The essay highlights some original war
devices employed by the Norman armies against the Byzantines and the Arabs to
achieve their goals of conquest.

Caesar was without a doubt one of the greatest general created by the Roman Army and mankind. Even though a lot of researchers consider that the subject of his military and political achievements is exhausted, there still are perspectives that show new faces of his "adventure" in Rome's political life and in the provinces' military one. This book subscribes to this tendency, and the authors go beyond naratting the essential moments during the military campaigns, considering at the same time the traditions and customs of the Celtic society and their attempt to evolve towards the Roman model, especially after Vercingetorix's rise to power. In parallel we follow the events in Rome that influence Caesar's career, and which often led him to taking close call decisions. The book has 210 pages of text, and in between pages 82 and 83, there are 16 pages inserted with pictures and maps.The study in itself is divided in nine chapters, and is preceded by a section of thanks, a note that refers to the sources used and an introduction. At the end of the nine chapters there is a glossary, two appendixes, the notes, a bibliography and an index. The first four chapters, along with the introduction, are based on the elements that created the framework of the events in the year 52BC, events that have culminated with the battle of Alesia. Thus, we can see the natural framework, the two combatant forces, their leaders and the leaders decisions until the battle's final moment. The last four chapters describe the two leaders' strategy, a strategy that they tried to adapt to the opponents fighting particularity. The first chapter, An ancient city in Gaul, shows the natural framework of the decisive confrontation. Although most of the arguments assign the town of Alise-Sainte-Reine as the place where the siege took place, there are some specialists that the place was Chaux-des-Crotenay, in Juras and Alaise in Franche-Comte. In the last chapter, the authors declare themselves pretty clearly as supporting the first version. In the second chapter, De Rei Militarii, the authors present the defining elements of the Roman Army, which also represent the key to its success. A combination between discipline, practice, organization, cohesion, flexibility, command, equipment and morals, is that which drives the Roman Army towards victory. The Gauls are presented in the third chapter, Way of the Gaul. Although written from a Roman perspective, Caesar's writings are extremely important because they are the only sources written about the Gauls in that era. In this chapter there are presented the most important oppida,and also other elements of the Celtic culture, like the importance of women's role in this society. Racial battle fatigue (RBF) has been operationalized as the psychological, emotional, and physiological toll of confronting racism. In this article, RBF is used to analyze the toll of racism on teachers of Color who work within a predominantly White profession. We present counterstories of justice-oriented, urban, teachers of Color who demonstrate racism in their professional contexts as a cumulative and ongoing experience that has a detrimental impact on their well-being and retention in the field. We also share their strategies of resilience and resistance, as they rely on a critical community to persist and transform their schools.

Taking as its starting point Carr's view that historical narrative reflects the preoccupations of the time in which it is written and Foucault's concept of consensual historical discourse as the outcome of a social struggle in which the victor suppresses or at least diminishes contrary versions of historical events in favour of their own, this paper traces and discusses the historical narrative of British nursing in the Crimean war and, in particular, three competing narratives that have arisen in the latter half of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st. The most direct and definite expression of Philhellenism during the Greek War of Independence (1821–9) was military action by European volunteers, generally officers, on the side of the revolutionaries. This article discusses the Philhellenes’ military action at the Battle of Peta in 1822, as recorded in the diary of one of the few survivors, the physician Johann-Daniel Elster. Environmental ('Green') issues have become an increasingly important issue in contemporary business management. Pressure on business regarding environmental issues is increasing and is expected to continue to do so into the future. Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are thought to have a large combined effect on the environment and this area has been cited as problematic for the SME sector. This thesis investigates collaboration amongst SMEs through networks as a way to increase environmental activity in this sector-focusing on the Hackefors model (a joint ISO 14001 certification network). The empirical study of this thesis involved a survey study of 4 networks that have implemented the Hackefors model to achieve ISO 14001 in Sweden. The networks represented SMEs from a large variety of industries and the study brought a 75% response rate. It explored different aspects of the Hackefors model, such as the motives and benefits for entering the network, drawbacks and disadvantages of the model, network relations, pressures for ISO 14001 certification and the possibility of extended network relations after certification. The results showed that group ISO 14001 certification using the Hackefors model is an effective way for an SME to implement an EMS. Not only is the model successful in achieving certification, it also brings many other benefits with it. The Hackefors model can be seen as an effective way to encourage SMEs who may not have previously considered an EMS, to implement ISO 14001. In addition, it helps companies become ISO 14001 certified at a significantly lower cost and to overcome some of the problems traditionally associated with SMEs, such as size and lack of time.

This article highlights two aspects of the language used in Classical Greek literary sources to discuss pitched battle. First, the sources regularly use unqualified forms of the verb kinduneuein, “to take a risk,” when they mean fighting a battle. They do so especially in contexts of deliberation about the need to fight. Second, they often describe the outcome of major engagements in terms of luck, fate, and random chance, at the explicit expense of human agency. Taken together, these aspects of writing on war suggest that pitched battle was seen as an inherently risky course of action with unacceptably unpredictable results, which was therefore best avoided. Several examples show that the decision to fight was indeed evaluated in such terms. This practice casts further doubt on the traditional view that Greek armies engaged in pitched battles as a matter of principle.
