* Alfred Wegener proposed the theory of continental
drift 1912. His theory was very controversial and only widely accepted until the last 1950s. (After his death in 1930.)

slow movement of Earths crust and continents over time. Continental drift is supported by the process of Plate Tectonics.

that our continents broke off from. It is believed that at one time the continents formed one large landmass that eventually drifted apart.

* Divergent boundaries are where two plates
meet and move away from each other.
from the molten rock that pushes up through. The most popular is the mid-ocean ridge located in the Atlantic Ocean.
* *
* The Earth is divided into 3 main layers: * Core Inner & Outer * Mantle * Crust Continental & Oceanic * The Crust is broken up into pieces which move
called Tectonic Plates.
*
* Earthquakes are caused from movement in Tectonic
Plates. * Stress builds up when two plates are moving against each other, the release in stress we feel as an earthquake. * The Epicenter is the location on the surface directly above where the plates moved/relieved stress. * The Focus is the location under the surface where the plates moved/relieved stress.
