23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me. 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lords death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Communion is one of my favorite acts in which we participate as Christians, and as Disciples of Christ. It is a time for all of us to join together in all of our imperfections and to share together a meal of grace. We come to the table as a community longing to grow closer to the one who created us and the one who invited us to partake in the meal. Ive heard some great feedback about Youth Sunday and all the great work that the youth did to get ready and lead our community in Worship on Sunday June 9. A couple of people have stopped to talk to me about how the use of chips and salsa for communion made them feel uncomfortable. I wanted to help you get a little better sense about why the youth chose that for use on that Sunday. When Jesus sat down at the last supper with his disciples, they were sharing the passover meal. On the table was unleavened bread and wine, common elements for the household of a Jewish family. We do not serve wine in our communion on Sunday morning. The use of grape juice instead of wine began during the temperance movement in the nineteenth century. We as a people understand the use of grape juice instead of wine, primarily because they are made from the same fruit. Jesus used wine because that was the drink they had at the table. He took those ordinary elements that brought them around the table, and he transformed them into metaphors of him. This was a symbolic act which the disciples would be able to replicate so that they can remember Jesus in the moments when life is really hard and they might feel a little lost. Communion is a tie of a community of people who begin to be spread out far and wide. When someone encounters another Christian, they can join together in a meal of remembrance. The use of chips and salsa was a nod of acknowledgement of a different culture that is part of who we are. We took the ordinary elements of chips and salsa, and gave them new life by remembering that meal in the upper room. It is not the elements themselves that make communion, but rather the remembrance of the symbols, the remembrance of the man who invited us in our imperfectness to come and share the perfect meal of love. You are invited to share that meal, in as many strange ways as it may come. Its ok to be more comfortable with the traditional elements, but allow yourself to talk about why that makes you more comfortable so that you can begin to deepen your own understanding of the ordinance of communion. Come, share the Lord.
