23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me. 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lords death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Communion is one of my favorite acts in which we participate as Christians, and as Disciples of Christ. It is a time for all of us to join together in all of our imperfections and to share together a meal of grace. We come to the table as a community longing to grow closer to the one who created us and the one who invited us to partake in the meal. Ive heard some great feedback about Youth Sunday and all the great work that the youth did to get ready and lead our community in Worship on Sunday June 9. A couple of people have stopped to talk to me about how the use of chips and salsa for communion made them feel uncomfortable. I wanted to help you get a little better sense about why the youth chose that for use on that Sunday. When Jesus sat down at the last supper with his disciples, they were sharing the passover meal. On the table was unleavened bread and wine, common elements for the household of a Jewish family. We do not serve wine in our communion on Sunday morning. The use of grape juice instead of wine began during the temperance movement in the nineteenth century. We as a people understand the use of grape juice instead of wine, primarily because they are made from the same fruit. Jesus used wine because that was the drink they had at the table. He took those ordinary elements that brought them around the table, and he transformed them into metaphors of him. This was a symbolic act which the disciples would be able to replicate so that they can remember Jesus in the moments when life is really hard and they might feel a little lost. Communion is a tie of a community of people who begin to be spread out far and wide. When someone encounters another Christian, they can join together in a meal of remembrance. The use of chips and salsa was a nod of acknowledgement of a different culture that is part of who we are. We took the ordinary elements of chips and salsa, and gave them new life by remembering that meal in the upper room. It is not the elements themselves that make communion, but rather the remembrance of the symbols, the remembrance of the man who invited us in our imperfectness to come and share the perfect meal of love. You are invited to share that meal, in as many strange ways as it may come. Its ok to be more comfortable with the traditional elements, but allow yourself to talk about why that makes you more comfortable so that you can begin to deepen your own understanding of the ordinance of communion. Come, share the Lord.

Senior Adults Met Tues., June 18

The Senior Adult Ministry Group met Tues, June 18. There were 26 people (some of whom havent been here in awhile) present for lunch and the presentation by our guest Taylor Fee. Taylor told us about her two trips associated with the University of San Diego where she will complete her Masters degree this coming December in International Studies. We heard about her three-day conference of the NATO parliamentary assembly in Prague and her side trip to Krakow, Poland to see Auschwitz. She also shared her trip to Europe and the Islamic world studying European relations with the Middle East and North Africa. In addition to pictures of the above trip, we viewed pictures from her time in Paris, Brussels, Vienna and Istanbul as part of her study. Everyone was very impressed with her knowledge of the areas traveled. Taylors mom Chris Fee and boyfriend Ben Clark accompanied Taylor to our luncheon.. Thank you Taylor for giving your time and driving up to Fullerton from San Diego that Tuesday morning just for us, and then having to return the same day. It was a gift of love for her church and her grandparents. Next month we will meet on Tuesday, July16... Matt Davis will be our guest. Matt will be giving us the organ recital that was originally planned for our April meeting but due to a schedule conflict had to be rescheduled. Put the date on your calendar. Update On Mission Trip To Joplin, Missouri

We have been given four spots for a mission trip in Joplin, Missouri from October 20-26 to assist with the ongoing relief work being done in that city following the devastating tornadoes that struck that city two years ago. Those who are planning to be part of this trip at this time are Sherry Herrera, Ed Linberg, Craig Wallace and Barry Woodbridge. There might be room for one additional person, though this would need to be confirmed through the DHM office in Indianapolis once we knew another person was interested in, and able to go on, this mission trip. So, if that's you, speak to Ed Linberg to express your interest in joining this group. We are going to be partnering with the Allisonville Christian Church, near Indianapolis, for the week of hands-on mission. Watch for more information about this mission trip in the coming weeks. Looking much further ahead, we have had some initial conversations about an intergenerational mission trip for our congregation during the Fullerton School District's spring break in 2014. Debra Todd, Associate Pastor, knows pastors serving in Texas whose communities were hit by tornadoes a few weeks ago and their communities could likely be sites for a mission trip. If this interests you, speak to Debra or to Ed so your name can be put on a list for such a trip if it is possible for us to organize one for next year. The Outreach Ministry 5

Emergency Clean-Up Bucket Project To Be Dedicated On Sunday

The Emergency Clean-Up Bucket Project which has been coordinated by Phil Forbes over the past five weeks will come to a close this Sunday with the 37 buckets we've put together being dedicated prior to their being shipped to the Church World Service Distribution Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Helping us to dedicate these buckets will be Julie Brumana. She is the Director of the Church World Service Office in the Southwest. We will be honored to have Julie present for Sunday's service to be part of Children's Moment and to share with us about the work Church World Service does in the United States and around the world. Special thanks goes to Phil Forbes who took this project on, contacted ACE Hardware in Fullerton to make arrangements to get the buckets donated and to get a "package deal" for our members to purchase the items to go into the buckets. Week in and week out, Phil has been present helping all of us to be part of this very successful project. Last week, knowing that the buckets had to be shipped to Little Rock, Phil contacted a number of shippers to see what the cost would be for shipping these buckets. Working with Fed Ex, arrangements have been made for them to pick up the buckets on Monday, July 1, and to transport them to Little Rock for less than $400. This represents a 65% discount on the price courtesy of Fed Ex. FYI, the Outreach Ministry voted on 6/19 to pay for the cost of transporting the buckets from the Brown Interest Fund which, at the time, had a total of $500+ on hand. A big thank you to Fed Ex. Also a big thank you to Mike Olson, Manager of ACE Hardware, Fullerton, for his contribution to this project and his assistance to Phil in getting the buckets and the contents of same to the church so the project became very visible. Finally, thanks to all of you who've participated in this project with your donations toward the cost of the Emergency Clean-up Buckets. We will give you a final accounting of the dollars received toward this project next week when the final total of donations is known. However, we already know it is in excess of $2,000 to date. Global Ministries Congo Initiative

From the gatherings of the General Synod of the United Church of Christ in Long Beach this week and weekend and the General Assembly of us Disciples in Orlando from July 11-17 in Orlando, Global Ministries is focusing attention on the Democratic Republic of Congo. There are a number of reasons for this specific focus. In 2011, both the UCC Synod and the Disciples' General Assembly adopted resolutions calling for "reflection, education and advocacy on behalf of the Congo." Over the past decade, approximately 6 million people have been killed in ongoing conflict and war for control of Congo's vast mineral resources. Any of us who currently use cell phones and computers benefit from these mineral resources that cause so much death and misery. In addition, we have a long history of engagement in the Congo and today, through Global Ministries, the Disciples and the UCC continue this legacy of connections and relationships. 1 Corinthians 12:16 states that "when one part of the body suffers, we all suffer." With a history of engagement in the Congo since 1899, we cannot ignore our calling to walk in solidarity with sisters and brothers there. This emphasis will involve many aspects of engagement: Bible study curriculum focusing on issues such as partnership and mutuality, HIV/AIDs and healthcare, the rights of women and children, and the access to and use of natural resources; People to People immersion trips to the Congo as well as hosting delegates from the partner church/organization; opportunities to learn about and be involved in advocacy issues which have been identified by partners in the Congo; and worship resources designed to help experience God and faith in new and challenging ways. All of these resources will be available on a part of the Global Ministries website designated for the Congo Initiative. Right now we are specifically asking those who have a heart and passion for God's mission in the world to write a short prayer (between 3 and 5 sentences) lifting up the Congo ad sending it to this e-mail address: jbarnes@dom.disciples.org. These prayers will be highlighting a daily prayer for the Congo and for our sisters and brothers in the Disciples of Christ in the Congo The plan is to post the prayers that are received on the website, a different prayer each day, for the next 18 months. Our hope and prayer is that through these many and varied experiences, we will better understand the issues, priorities, successes and struggles of sisters and brothers in the Cong and, in turn, be challenged to understand ourselves, our world and our faith anew.
