EN 13445-5 INSPECTION AND TESTING 4.1 Add to this clause: The Principal shall specify whether he (or his nominee) will perform shop surveillance and if so he shall specify the scope. The Principal should tailor the scope of the Principal's inspection to avoid duplication with that of the Notified Body or Inspecting Authority. A pre-manufacturing meeting shall be held if considered necessary by the Manufacturer or Principal. 5.2.2. Add to this clause: Manholes and inspection openings See (3.11) of this DEP. 6.5 Add to this clause: If backing strips are used (against the recommendation of EN 13445-4 Clause 6.1), they shall be carefully removed after welding. Where the back of the joint cannot be dressed after welding, an adequate inert gas backing shall be applied. Production control test plates are not required for material group 1, except for material which have a specified minimum tensile strength (Rm) greater than 485 N/mm 2. Production control test plates are also required for weld-deposited cladding. The test plates shall be made at an early stage of production welding with a thickness equal to the thickness of the shell. DEP 31.22.11.32-Gen. January 2010 Page 19 In the case of spherical vessels, the test plates shall be welded separately and they shall represent each type of seam and welding position. For site-constructed vessels, the test plates shall be welded at the construction site. Half the total number of plates (minimum one plate) shall be selected and tested at an early stage. If the vessel will be post-weld heat treated, then these test plates shall be given a simulated heat treatment before testing, and a time/temperature record shall be retained by the Manufacturer. The test plates results shall be considered valid if the eventual vessel post-weld heat treatment is performed within the specified time/temperature range. The other test plates shall be placed inside the vessel during its post-weld heat treatment, and shall be retained in case later testing may be required. Subject to the Principals approval, the simulated post weld heat treatment may comprise up to three simulated PWHT cycles to prevent problems in case a vessel weld repair and additional PWHT is required. DEP 31.22.11.32-Gen.
January 2010 Page 20 6.6.3 Add to this clause: For full penetration welds in Testing Group 1, with a plate thickness exceeding 40 mm (or 20 mm if the double-wall technique would be required for radiographic inspection), ultrasonic examination SHALL [PS] be employed instead of radiography. The following techniques and procedures apply: 1. TOFD shall be used on butt welds, fabricated of low alloyed steels, and other materials that exhibit low ultrasonic attenuation, which allow access to both sides of the weld seam. For but welds joining flat or cylindrical plates of equal thickness the requirements (a) to (e) shall apply. For a weld joining plates of unequal thickness, a plate having the direction of curvature normal to the weld seam (e.g. a spherical end cap) or an angle between the joined plates, requirement (f) applies in addition. a. The TOFD method shall be applied in accordance with CEN/TS 14751, using examination level B or higher. b. Acceptance criteria for the TOFD technique shall be in accordance with EN 15617, acceptance level 2, except for vessels fabricated of Cr-Mo-materials (see DEP 30.10.02.32-Gen.), for which Level 1 (most stringent) shall be used. c. To cover the zone near the scanning surface, use shall be made of pulse-echo based examination from the scanning surface, using creep wave probes, or alternatively, TOFD applied from the opposite surface. d. When examining the outer surface of the weld using creep wave probes, the following requirements hold: i. The probes have to be calibrated on a 3.0 mm diameter Side Drilled Hole (SDH) located at a depth of 3.0 mm below the outer surface. The probe to SDH distance shall be 10 mm. ii. Acceptance criteria shall be in accordance with EN 1712, Acceptance Level B, except for vessels fabricated of Cr-Mo-materials (see DEP 30.10.02.32-Gen.), for which Level C (most stringent) shall be used. iii. The creep wave procedure shall have the approval of a UT Level III individual and shall be subject to the approval of the Principal. e. The examination procedure and the qualification and certification of TOFD personnel shall be subject to the approval of Principal. f. For butt welds not joining flat or cylindrical plates of equal thickness, blind zones may occur that may require special probe settings, and/or coverage by additional angle beam or creep wave examination. A procedure with a fully developed scan plan shall be available during the pre-qualification meeting, for review and approval by the Principal. g. If the examination of butt welds cannot satisfy the requirements of this clause 1, an alternative inspection plan shall be developed, for approval by the Principal. 2. All other full penetration welds requiring ultrasonic examination shall be examined according to the requirements in Table 6.6.3-1 of Section 5 of the code, using method 1 (3 mm side drilled holes) for setting sensitivity and reference levels in accordance with EN 1712, and satisfying the following additional requirements: a. Examination from both sides of the plate and from within the bore of a nozzle should be considered. b. Removal of the weld reinforcement should be considered to allow scanning across the weld surface, thereby improving access to the weld volume. c. At least one of the probes shall irradiate the weld bevel perpendicularly (within 5 degrees for 4 MHz shear wave probes and 10 degrees for 2 MHz probes shear wave probes or 4 MHz compression probes). DEP 31.22.11.32-Gen. January 2010 Page 21
d. When normal incidence on the weld bevel cannot be realized within the angle range specified above, supplementary examination with tandem techniques shall be applied, using methods as specified in EN 583-4. e. For wall thicknesses above 100 mm the size of reference defect (side drilled hole) may have to be adjusted f. A scan plan shall be developed for each of the welds, or for sections of weld of which the geometry varies such that a different scan plan results (e.g. nozzle on a cylindrical shell). The scan plan shall, as a minimum, show the scan surfaces used, placement and scanning range for each probe, coverage of the weld volume, the minimum-maximum length of beam paths required, and the angle of incidence on weld bevels. g. The procedure and the scan plan shall be available during the pre-qualification meeting, for review and approval by the Principal. h. For critical welds on which acceptable performance of manual ultrasonic techniques may be difficult to achieve, the use of a mechanized scanning system with automated recording of data may be required; selection of welds subject to automated examination has to be mutually agreed between the Manufacturer and the Principal. i. For critical welds where acceptable NDE performance may be difficult to achieve, a qualification test may be requested by the Principal, to qualify the procedure and NDE personnel. Qualification may require reference blocks representing the weld geometries involved, allowing, as a minimum, demonstration of weld coverage, angle of incidence at weld bevels, and sensitivity across the examination volume. For development of a qualification program guidance can be taken from CEN/TR 14748; the level of qualification has to be mutually agreed between the Manufacturer and the Principal. 3. Vessels with an internally welded overlay clad shall be examined with the following additional requirements: a. For butt welds allowing access on both sides of the weld seam, TOFD shall be applied, following the requirements under item (1) above. b. For all other full penetration welds the requirements of item (2) above hold, minus the items (2.a), (2.d), plus the following requirements: i. When each part of the inspection volume can be covered, by at least one beam from a set of two or more angle beam probes, this is deemed acceptable, if one of the following requirements can also be satisfied: 1. Prior to the application of welded overlay, the weld proves to be acceptable when examining it according to the requirements of items (2.a), (2.b), (2.c) and (2.d); 2. The weld is acceptable, when examining the fusion lines from the bore of a nozzle with a normal beam compression probe (TR-probe), after suitable preparation of the welded overlay surface, and satisfying the requirement of item (2.c); ii. If the approaches (i.1) and (i.2) above cannot be realized, a solution shall be proposed, for which the approval has to be obtained from the Principal. 4. For the inspection of coarse grained weld materials or dissimilar metal welds, the use of standard ultrasonic techniques, with shear wave angle beam probes or TOFD, may not provide an acceptable signal to noise ratio. In such cases compression angle beam probes shall be used, with the following requirements: DEP 31.22.11.32-Gen. January 2010 Page 22 a. A procedure shall be developed for approval by the Principal. As ISO 22825:2006 is under significant revision, guidance on technique selection and procedure development may also be taken from the Handbook on the
ultrasonic examination of austenitic and dissimilar welds. b. Suitable reference blocks shall be available, to be used for validation of the procedure. c. Items (2.g2.h) and (2.i) may be applicable, at the decision of the Principal. Requirements applicable for all examinations: Unless stated otherwise, NDE SHALL [PS] be performed at least 24 h after the welds have been intermediate post weld heat treated and cooled down to ambient temperature. 6.6.3 Add to this clause: For hardness testing requirements on carbon steel equipment see Appendix 3 of this DEP. 10.2.3.2.5 Replace this clause: For test water quality see DEP 61.10.08.11-Gen. 10.2.4 Add to this clause: Gaskets shall not be reused after breaking the joints. Tell-tale holes shall not be plugged, but shall be filled with a non-corrosive compound (e.g. Shell Ensis) or grease to prevent ingress of water. 11.4 Add to this clause: Standard Drawing S 10.114 shall apply to nameplates. On stainless steel equipment, a stainless steel nameplate shall be used. For vessels required for low-temperature service (0 C or lower) and for equipment containing liquefied gas, the nameplates shall include the lower design temperature. The nameplate bracket should be attached to a non-insulated, non-removable part of the pressure vessel (e.g. skirt). EN 13445-6 SPHEROIDAL CAST IRON Delete this Part of EN 13445 and replace with: Pressure vessels of spheroidal cast iron shall not be used.
