(a)
In his article "The Role of the Manager: Folklore and Fact", Henry Mintzberg disagrees with
the classical view of the role of managers. Outline his alternative description of the role of the
manager, and give your opinion of his view. (12 marks)
(b)
Compare and contrast the role of the manager and the role ofthe leader, outlining the tasks
both are involved in and the types of power used. (8 marks)
(c)
Outline the Trait Theory ofleadership
(5 marks)

and give your opinion of it's validity in the work place.

(a)
Outline what is meant by motivation in the workplace and explain how Abraham Maslow's
hierarchy of human needs can be applied to motivation in the workplace. (10 marks)
(b)
In his article "One More Time: How Do You Motivate Employees?", Frederick Herzberg
distinguishes between maintenance (hygiene) and motivation factors. Give examples of both
factors, his proposed solution to motivation in the workplace and give your opinion of his
approach. (15 marks)

(a)
Distinguish between the vertical and horizontal organisation structure, noting the advantages
and disadvantages of both. Explain what centralisation means in terms of delegation, and
comment on which structure is more likely to be centralised.
(15 marks)
(b)
Explain why there is a necessity for corporate governance in an organisation, and outline the
obligations of any company wishing to list on the Irish Stock Exchange. (10 marks)

(a)
Using table 4.1 below, calculate the cost variance (CY), schedule variance (SY), Cost
Performance Index (CPI) and schedule performance index (SPI) for each week of this project.
Plot the CPI and the SPI on a Quad Plot IY diagram and comment on the progress this project
is making. (10 marks)

Discuss the concepts of variable, fixed, mixed, step, direct and indirect costs in the context of a
value generating organisation, giving examples of each and explaining the motivation behind
such cost analysis.

Discuss the relative merits of the two main cost estimation techniques, i.e. engineering and
historical techniques, and explain the circumstances in which each of the cost methods would
be used.

Differentiate between the functional and contribution reporting format, giving examples of
each and indicating why and in what circumstances one method may be preferable over the
other.

In the context of a value creating organisation, explain the concept of overhead, indicating how
its relative importance may be changing in modem manufacturing industry, and commenting
on the concept of activity bases.
