CENTENARY OF GREATEST SANSKRIT GRAMMARIAN OF THIS CENTURY

SRI MELPAKKAM NARASIMHACHARYA was a
legendary Sanskrit grammarian who lived among us
in this century. He has worked on hundreds of palm
leaf manuscripts and brought to light a magnum opus
with collection of all the commentaries available for
Patanjali Mahabhashya of Panini Sutras, prominent
among them being Kayyatas commentary in 14
volumes. Any new researcher does not have to go in
search of palm leaf manuscripts. His Centenary
celebrations were held with pomp and glory at
Madurantakam at the Sri Ahobila Mutt Oriental Sanskrit
College under the aegis of Sri Ahobila Mutt.
The celebrations organized in the Leadership of Prof.
Dr. Padmanabhan, Sri Karyam, Sri Ahobila Mutt with
support from family members and was attended by
many prominent scholars from India and France (French
Institute of Indology Pondicherry). In the morning,
traditional celebrations were held at his residence where he once lived which was followed
by a Scholars congregation at the college where he served for a good part of his life.
Prominent scholars Like Sri U.Ve. Srivatsankacharyar, Sri U.Ve Villur Nadadoor
Karunakaracharyar attended the event. The notable among the attendees were also
Sri Karyam of Srimad Andavan Ashram and Pierrie Fillozaat, Director of French Institute
of Indology, Pondicherry and his team who are leading the institute.
Pierrie said in his speech that he learnt
Sanskrit from SRI MELPAKKAM Swamy
and could translate Vyakarana
Mahabhashya in French. He has ranked
Melpakkam Swamy among great
grammarians Like Subbaraya Sastri of 19th
century and he said even now his position
in the institute is vacant and could not be
filled by anyone due to lack of such
eminence.

THIS IS THE DIVINE PLAN
Prayers go up and blessings come down. Silent prayers seem to establish a

direct communication with the Almighty, which seems to be more effective than the
expressed prayers.
In a surprise but welcome development, the Demonetization exercise initiated
by the Honble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, a first step in the fight against the
parallel black economy has accelerated the move of our Country towards a less cash
society. On a similar note it can be said that our experiment against commercialization
of Temples is a blessed experiment in all aspects and from all angles. As Religious
people, we have to now use this opportunity to effectively implement the recommendation
of the Supreme Court for creation of a Daily Puja Fund scheme for each of our ancient
low income temples.
In 1996, the Supreme Court appointed committee visited Chilkur Balaji Temple
and recorded thus During the course of the Committees visit, Prof. M.V.
Soundararajan explained that though there is no remarkable income to the temple.
Archakas are being paid remuneration from out of Ubhayam amounts collected from
the Donors which were invested in interest yielding Fixed Deposits on permanent
basis in the name of the deity. He suggested that similar device or scheme may be
extended in the cases of those temples to remunerate the Archakas where the temples
are having no sources of income (Minutes of the Meeting of Committee Held on
28.09.1996 Pg 120 of Committee Report).
The Supreme Court accepted the Committee recommendation and ordered as
follows:-We also approve of the same and direct the Commissioner Endowments
Department to work out the modalities and modules donations floated, as and when
donations are received, the amount may be invested in interest earning fixed deposit
schemes, preferably in nationalized banks, and whenever the payment of remuneration
is to be made, they should rationalize the same in such a way that the same does
never exceed at any stage 50 percent of the interest amount and the rest of the 50%
should be earmarked for other welfare purposes
Even though the Supreme Court ordered that the concept of the Daily Puja Fund
which originated in the Chilkur Balaji Temple is extended to all ancient low income
temples it has unfortunately not been implemented in any other temple even after
over two decades. The Daily Puja Fund scheme of Chilkur Balaji Temple has been
successful in generating a corpus of nearly over 10 Crores amount and the temple
has also successfully transitioned to a Hundi less model with no cash donations accepted
since Dec 8 th 2001.
On behalf of crores of devotees we appeal to the Honble Prime Minister Shri
Narendra Modi to take suitable steps to implement the Supreme Court order requiring
a Daily Puja Fund for all ancient village temples in our Country to enable the devotees
to donate through the digital media to the Temples of their ancestral villages in their
respective bank accounts. This will enable our temples to slowly migrate to a Hundiless Chilkur temple model and surface the amounts in bank accounts thus reducing
malpractices. This will help preserving the daily puja in many such low income temples,
leading to preservation of Dharma and welfare and prosperity for the Country at large.
This is a divine plan for success of the initiative.

GUARD OF THE GODLY

Sri V.S.Karunakaran, Chennai
The Lord dwells as Sri Kodandarama, along

with His consort Sita, brother Lakshmana and
Hanuman in the holy shrine at Vaduvur near Thanjavur
in Tamil Nadu.

There is a wonderful place in this world called Vaduvur,
whose splendor is worthy of description, where the
Lord Raghoothama (the greatest of the Raghus) and
the bestower of boons shines with the daughter of
Mother Earth (Sita).
Ramachariar and Lakshmanachariar were
two Ganapaatis of Yajur Veda, who were running a
Veda Paatasala in this sacred place of Vaduvur long
ago. They wanted to go on a pilgrimage to holy
kshetras like Ayodhya and Naimisharanyam. They
decided to take the five students studying Veda in
their Paatasala along with them as there was no
one else to take care of them.
The seven of them went to those holy places
and had holy dip in the sacred waters there and
also had darshan of the Lords enshrined there. On
their way back, they reached Lucknow Railway
Junction.
From Lucknow, they travelled to Itarsi Junction
by train. From Itarsi, they had to reach Nagpur and
then start their final leg of journey towards Tamil
nadu. It was already night and hence they decided
to spend that night in Itarsi Junction itself. The two
Vedic pundits and the five students kept their bag
and baggage beside them and slept in the platform.
Ramachariar was wearing a shawl around
his body. Lakshmanachariar had kept his shawl in
his bag itself.
The next morning, when they woke up, they
were shocked to see that all their bag and baggage
were missing. Their vessels to perform their daily
rites, Salagrama Lord, their money and their train
tickets were all gone.
Yet, those Vedic scholars were not deterred.
With full faith on the Lord, they boarded the train
to Nagpur from Itarsi Junction.
But a flying squad suddenly boarded the
train and caught these seven people as they were
travelling without tickets. They did not know Hindi

and could not explain their plight to the men of
the squad.
Hence they were detrained at Nagpur Junction
and taken to the Railway police on charges of
ticketless travel. They could not explain their plight
to the Railway police too, because of the language
barrier and they were detained at the Railway police
station.
The five students began to cry because
of hunger. Ramachariar told them that they were
not even having a vessel to take bath and do
sandhyavandanam and asked them to do mantra
snana and chant Aghamarshana sooktam, which
is a jewel of Mantras appearing in the Rig Veda,
and a part of Mahanarayana Upanishad. The
students started to chant the sooktam which starts
as:

At that time, a santra seller came by that
way. Ramachariar, who was sitting inside the station
called him and asked him if he could give some
santra fruits in exchange for the shawl he was wearing.
The vendor noted that the shawl had
embroidery of swan in its border. He recalled seeing
a Vedic scholar at Dharampet in Nagpur wearing
a similar shawl with swan border.
He immediately took his bicycle to
Dharampet and brought the Vedic scholar to the
Railway police station. He showed them those seven
people detained by the police and requested him
to somehow help them out of their trouble.
The Vedic scholar saw the two scholars and
the five students chanting the Aghamarshana sooktam.
They were chanting the line

The hungry children could not carry on beyond <zD>
They said <zD> <zD> <zD> and they burst
into tears. It sounded as Hamso Hamso to those
who o heard this
The Vedic scholar decided to help them.
He was well versed in Hindi and he introduced himself
to the policemen as Krishnamachariar and requested
them to release the seven men.

But the policemen said that it was not that

easy as those people had been caught and handed
over by the squad and they could be released only
after the remittance of the fine for all seven of them.
The fine was a big amount and Krishnamachariar
did not have that much money with him.
He then approached Sri Viswanathan, a
wealthy businessman, residing in his locality and
requested him to help the Vedic scholars from Tamil
Nadu. He then gave the money and Krishnamachariar
brought them home from the railway police station.
Krishnamachariar arranged for their bath
and food. He also took them to a Udhaka Shanti
ritual nearby and the seven people did Veda parayana
there and were rewarded appropriately.
Then, Krishnamachariar arranged for their
return journey and took them to Nagpur railway
junction to board the train to Chennai. At that time,
Ramachariar asked Krishnamachariar how it was
possible for him to know that they were caught in
the police station and how could he come in time
to rescue them.
Krishnamachariar pointed his hands at the
santra vendor who also accompanied them and said
that it was he who informed him about their plight.
He added that the vendor had noticed the swan
border in Ramachariars shawl and deduced that
those people may be related to Krishnamachariar
who also used to wear a similar shawl with swan
border. And when he came to the place they were
detained he heard the sound of hamso hamso from
the children!
Ramachariar was elated on hearing this and
he said all those are the blessings of the Lord who
incarnated as the swan Hamsavatara.
He said, That is why the Lord is called
Govidaam pati. Go means Vedas. Govid means
those who know the Vedas. Govidaam pati means
the Lord of the learned people who know the
Vedas.

The vendor gave seven baskets of santra

to the seven vedic scholars as his humble offering.
They boarded the train and successfully
reached Tamil nadu and reached their hometown
of Vaduvur safely.
In the meantime, the well-off man Sri
Viswanathan, who had helped Krishnamachariar
in rescuing those people, lodged a complaint with
the Railway police about the theft of their things
in Itarsi junction.
The policemen were well aware of the thieves
who used to steal such bag and baggage at Itarsi
junction and easily caught them. They ordered them
to return atleast the Salagrama and the vessels
for performing holy rites. But the thieves returned
all the bags.
Then Shri .Viswanathan sent those
confiscated items to Tamil Nadu via train and the
pundits Ramachariar and Lakshmanachariar
collected their items at the Mannargudi Railway
station near Vaduvur.
This anecdote shows that the Sriman
Narayana, who is the Guard of the vedic scholars,
was in the form of the swan in the border of the
scholar Ramachariars shawl and in the form of
sound Hamso hamso emanating from the children
and rescued them all.
Since He is the guard of such godly men
who know the Vedas, He is called Govidaam pati.

Madhura Vijayam - 63
Sri Ranganatha Travel Part II
Tamil Manuscript : Sree Venugopalan, Chennai

Story so far: The story based on the 14th century
incidents, was written by Sri Venugopalan which is
based on the historic facts elucidated in Madhura
Vijayam composed by Maharani Ganga Devi, Chief
Queen of King Kampanaraya. Two young men Vallabha
and Dutta set out on an expedition to locate the idol of
Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam, which was saved by four
Kodavas from being ransacked by Muslim invaders.
After several adventures the two boys, with the help of
Chenchu tribes found the idol along with one Kodava
who protected the idol for more than eighteen years
deep inside the forest of Chandragiri. Lord Ranganatha
was brought to Tirumala and King Ranganatha
Yadavaraya the ruler of that place patronized the
upkeep of the idol with daily pujas. Coincidentally Sri
Gopanna, commander-in-chief of the Vijayanagaras
mulvoy province reaches Tirumala in search of Lord
Ranganatha and he promises Vallabha to restore
Lord Ranganatha to Sri Rangam with the help of
Vijayanagara king. Vallabha and Datta turned to
Kancheepuram on their way back, ensured safety of
Manjari with her neighbors after the death of
Singazhagar who was the key energy behind the
expedition and left the town with disguised Vaishnavas
as the fort doors were closed as a defense to an
impending attack by Vijayanagar army. Datta and
Vallabha went on a mission to rescue Pandya princess
Makaravizhiyaal who was held a captive in Sambuvarayas
palace with an intention to marry her off to the son of
Sambuvaraya king. Meanwhile, as a first step the Vijayanagar
army mission was u n d e r t a k e n t o c o n q u e r
Sambuvaraya of Rajagambhira. First Kancheepuram
was conquered and later Kampana Rayas army
advanced to Rajagambhira mountain conquered it and
killed the Raja Gambhira king. The Madurai princess
was rescued. Later, Vallabha and Datta are entrusted
with the task of escorting Princess Madhurangini to
Pandya kingdom. During this long journey, Vallabha
expected a heart-to-heart chat with the princess to express
his love. Madhura was escorted back to her father in Pudur.
Makaravizhiyaal proposed marriage but Vallabha requested
time till he reinstates Lord Ranganatha to Sri Rangam.
Meanwhile, Lord Ranganatha has been brought to
Chenghee by Gopanna the commander of Vijayanagar
army belonging to Mulvoy province. Vallabha, Datta and
Vallabhas mother Vasanthika meet Gopanna to find out
about the plans of restoring Lord Ranganatha to Sri
Rangam. It was 10 years since the Rajagambhira Kingdom
became part of Vijayanagar and still no further
advancement action was taken against Madurai Sultan
due to trouble from Bahamani sultans.
Vallabha stood up.

Swamy! she is my mother ! You have seen her before
twice already! She wanted to definitely see you and
hence she has come all the way from Sathyamangalam!
said Vallabha
Gopanna saw the old woman Vasanthika. She also
immediately responded Swamy! Swamy! when are

you going to attack Madurai? When will you take my

Lord Ranga to Sri Rangam? When will all my desires
get fulfilled? I am still alive because of this reason
said Vasanthika with grief stricken voice and swooned
on the ground.
Gopanna and Vallabha lifted her and made her
comfortable and sit on the steps of the temple. Tears
were running from her eyes.
Oh! Noble lady! Vasanthika! Please bear with us for
some more time. said Gopanna in a choked voice.
Swamy! how much time should we wait? I have been
waiting for 10 years. When you won the Sambuvaraya
I thought you will immediately attack Madurai. You
did not. You have been telling that attack will happen
soon and we have spent over 10 years on this. How
long should our Lord Ranga reside in others temple?
said Vasanthika with lot of energy and high voice.
Gopanna was silent and speechless for some time.
Later he slowly said Oh! Noble lady! What you say
is fully correct. We thought that we will go to Madurai
and directly occupy it after victory over Sambuvaraya.
But that could not be achieved. Said Gopanna
Why Swamy? enquired Vasanthika
knowing that we are going to attack the south, the
Bahamani sultans in the north of our empire started
taking this opportunity to attack us, the Vijayanagar
said Gopanna
Who are these Bahamanis? enquired Vasanthika
Dont you know? The Bahamani kingdom is in the
north border of Vijayanagar. The Sultans people are
frequently troubling us by attacks in the borders and
in filtrations. When they attack, we had to focus our
army completely on this attack. Even we had to send
the army that came with us to south. We never expected
this said Gopanna.
Why Swamy? should we send all the army to North
side border? asked Vasanthika.
Yes, respected lady. Bahmani army is a vast army.
They are very ruthless. Only if we send all our army
we can protect the northern borders. If we had kept
the army in the south, it would be very difficult to break
the Bahamani attackers in the north. That is the reason
immediately after winning Sambuvaraya we had to send
our army to northern borders. I regret for this but I
am helpless said Gopanna.
Alright Swamy! 10 years have passed like a play.
Are we even now unable to bring the army to the south?

enquired Vasanthika.
Gopannas face became sorrowful.
This is somewhat our fate oh! respectable lady. We
had to have many prolonged battles with Bahamanis
in the north. Even now we are fighting. Even after
10 years of completion peace did not happen. Because
of this our Mahamandeleswara Sri Bukka Raya had
to focus all attention on the Bahamanis. Even though
he wanted a lot but could not achieve anything in
the south because of this. I know he cannot do it
now said Gopanna.
Cannot do it!? What are you saying swamy? you
cannot do it! ? Does this mean that our Lord Ranga
should be like this forever? shouted Vasanthika with
grief and became unconscious.
Vallabha ran inside and brought water. Gopanna gave
her comfort by fanning her. Vasanthika was unconscious
for very long. Vallabha looked at Gopanna and said
Swamy! please proceed to your palace. I will take
care of her!
Vallabha! I will go and send the physician saying
this Gopanna left the place. He came to his palace,
and sent the physician to the temple. He then sat
on the terrace of the palace with disturbed mind. How
many years have rolled out? 10 years! How fast all
this has happened? It is now totally 43 years since
the Tamil land has become slave to the Madurai
Sultanate. Even now this countrys issue is not solved.
Every day we wake up with a hope and it gets
decimated during the course of the day. I have spent
all 10 years just saying always tomorrow. The fact
is it is wrong. We have fear from the north, we have
fear from the east. If we keep saying this what will
ignorant people understand? They will perceive it
differently. They will say we are showing some cause
or the other to delay our approaches. Is there any
other way to get into action? Is there no way we can
get back Madurai? Gopanna thought for a long time.
This protracted thinking made him restless. Later he
even did not realize that his wife was calling him to
partake food. Without taking cognizance of that he
urgently went out.
At that time it was closed to midnight. He went quickly
to the temple priests home and knocked. The priest
came out and was surprised to see Gopanna. He
said your majesty! Is that you? At this hour?
Oh! Archakaswamy! I need your mercy now said
Gopanna
Oh! Sir! I am awaiting your orders. Please dont seek
mercy. Please ordain me said the Archaka.
Please come with me at once and open the temple
doors said Gopanna.

Yes your majesty said the priest.
As he brought the keys, both walked towards the temple
in that night and climbed the hill steps. When the priest
opened the doors Gopanna walked like a possessed
man towards Lord Ranga. Even he would not have walked
for 10 steps he felt a cold liquid at his feet. When he
felt the liquid with his hands he realized that it is blood
in the light of the lamp.
How did blood come here? enquired Gopanna.
I think it may be because that old lady who came
with that boy could have vomited blood. They were
sitting here. The mother should have vomited. We did
not observe. If we had we would have cleaned it
Gopanna became further surprised.
It is dangerous.! Saying this he looked at the priest
and said please wait here. I will come soon saying
this he got down the steps.
In Vishnu Gingee there were total of three choultries
and two mutts. He went and looked for Vallabha and
his mother in all these five places. He got information
from the last mutt.
Vallabhas mother regained consciousness. She wanted
to immediately go to Kanchi. Many people including
Vallabha tried to advise her not to but she did not listen.
The information was given by the administrator of the
Mutt. This lady seem to have been in a high energy
mission. She would not stop and listen to anyone.
She will leave anyone coming in her way and proceed.
She is unstoppable Said the administrator of the Mutt.
Gopanna was fully perturbed. He returned to the temple.
How can this lady get such an avesham (internal
energy). She should have thought about Lords plight
and have got it. What kind of devotee she is. Thinking
this he climbed the steps and reached the temple.
The priest had by that time cleaned the blood. On seeing
Gopanna, the priest got up.
Swamy! did this lady become conscious after I left?
After that what did she do? enquired Gopanna.
Your majesty, when the lady became conscious his
son wanted to take her to the lords sanctum sanctorium.
She did not desire. She left the hands in despair. Whether
she had become mad we do not know. She shouted
at the sannidhi (sanctum sanctorium) from here.
Oh! Ranga! The people whom you control dont have
the power. Dont you also have the power? you could
not get back your own abode. Are you not ashamed
of this? I cannot see you. If I see you I will not be
able to bear the plight. My heart will be broken down
and I will fall. I am going. I am a lady. See whether I

like all his emotions in the body are coming out. He
suddenly went and hit his head against a pillar in despair.
Looking at Gopanna in despair and breaking his head
on a stone pillar, the priest became concerned. He
caught him and pulled him back Oh Sir! This is great
Apacharam. Can you do like this? Will this be acceptable
to Lord? enquired the priest trembling
Gopanna, became calm, breathed and looked up and
said. Oh! Priest. This is a punishment. I am giving
punishment to myself. That is all
Oh! Lord! What mistake did you do? Why are you
punishing yourself? enquired the priest.
Oh! Priest, listen. I will tell you all. I took a vow to
take Lord Ranganatha and restore him back at Sri
Rangam. This was not yesterday or today. It was ten
years before! As a first step we won the Sambuvaraya
kingdom and annexed the territory with ours. That is
all! After that nothing happened lamented Gopanna.
The Priest was perturbed. Oh! Lord, still time has
not come. We should take it only in that fashion said
the priest to Gopanna.

did I do? I came to Ghengee. This is our southern
border. I was only watching the Sultans kingdom from
here and did nothing! It did not occur to me that I
should be doing something! If I had depended on my
valor and not relied on outside help, I may have completed
my vow by this time. I am feeling it now only said
Gopanna.
Then suddenly he said Oh! Priest, bring me two flower
balls. Hide inside one with Arali leaf and in another
keep Tulasi. I am going to find out Lords intention
using this
The priest brought the flower balls accordingly. Gopanna
opened one of them with great devotion. He got the
one with Tulasi leaf. He immediately was very happy
and went to ecstacy.
Oh! Priest! The Lord has accepted what I thought. I
should start doing this with my effort and my valor
he then prostrated before Lord Ranganatha and swiftly
left the temple.
Next day morning in an auspicious moment he left
for Kancheepuram. The famous Kancheepuram was
glittering in its glory similar to the one it had long
ago. Even though this sacred place was owned by
several kings its divinity did not deteriorate. But during
the Sambuvarayas regime, there was some deterioration

for the Kancheepurams divinity. This was because the
Sambuvarayas were under the slavery of Madurai Sultan.
But now, after the kingdom and city came under the
control of Vijayanagar empire, it again regained its past
glory. The religious life climbed new heights under the
able leadership of Bukka Raya and Kampana Raya.
Because of the old tourism and business returning to
the city, the city was buzzing with people and business.
Since the victory over Sambuvaraya, the Kancheepuram
became the capital city of Kampana Raya. He moved
his residence from Mulvoy city to Kancheepuram. He
built a massive palace and beautiful ponds in and around
it and was indulging himself in all the sports of a king.
In the morning hours of summer, Kampana Raya was
going to the royal pond to play water sports with his
queens. This was a great pass time for the kings of
those days. When Kampana was indulging in the great
sports his poet queen Ganga Devi would record his
playful behavior in her poetry. She observed in her poetry
that the way Kampana was indulging in sports with
royal ladies, it reminded of Lord Devendra playing with
his heavenly damsels. Just like a great wind has blown
from south, the ornaments of the ladies were swinging.
When the hips of the beautiful ladies moved it was
like Kampana was hit by the cupids arrows. When
Kampana played with a lotus flower in the Royal pond,
it made a lady jealous and her eyes filled with water.
When Kampana pinched a lady in her thighs in the
pond she would fall on him like a fish had bitten her.
The water of the pond first touched the feet of the ladies,
later the thighs and later the hips and further on their
breasts and it stopped afterwards. The ladies bathing
in the royal pond got washed off all their make ups
and they were more affable to the king. When the ladies
came out of the pond the king enjoyed the sight of
his nail marks on their thighs. When they were adjusting
their hair and changing to dry clothes the king was
enjoying the sight. Later the king used to go back with
his royal queens to his palace, wear new clothes and
go for Pooja. In those days, as waging wars, protecting
people were expected from the kings, their indulgment
in various royal sports were also expected.
When Gopanna reached Kancheepuram, the king finished
bathing and performed pooja. Later he had also partaken
meals and was engaged in state affairs discussing various
matters with his subordinate chieftains. Gopanna also
discussed various matters with the king. After that the
king retired to his palace in the evening. He was feeling
quite heavy. He looked at his queen and said Ganga!
I am feeling quite heavy. I am not doing well!

GARUDACHALAM
Sage Narada was explaining to the other sages
who were learning from him about Garudachalam
and how this name came to the Mountain.
Garuda learnt from his father that only Lord Sri
Mahavishnu will give his devotees all they want such
as everlasting wealth, health, happiness in this world
and ensure that they enjoy them fully and finally
the eternal bliss called Moksha or Sri Vaikuntha.
He learnt from his father that Lord was worshipped
by Brahma and he created the whole universe, Lord
Devendra got the post of Indra after performing pooja
to Lord Mahavishnu. He is the only one who can
give salvation to all the souls from this samsara.
Garudas father Sage Kashyap went on Oh! My son,
King of the birds, you also can attain highest
pedestals and get all good from the Lord. The best
way to please Lord Vishnu is through devotion. Other
tools to please him like mere Yagnyas, pushpa,
chandana etc. are only secondary to devotion. Even
one lakh Ashwamedhayagas dont please him without
devotion. Even reciting vedas and performing
penance is not equal to devotion for him. The sages
practice devotion to Lord and attain salvation. Others
get their desires like Dharma, Artha(wealth) and
Kama fulfilled. Whoever does not have devotion
to Lord he is considered the lowest among people.
Even one who has not learnt vedas, mastered
shastras but has devotion to Lord Vishnu attains
all the items needed and becomes best among
people. He also is considered as a person who
had done vedadhyayanam and other ordained duties
by virtue of his birth and profession. Oh! King of
Birds, the person who has all his senses and body
in good shape but has not heard about Lord Vishnu,
not seen his divine form in temples, has not sung
the praise of Lord Vishnu, has not thought about
him and has not performed poojas to him and not
devoted to him, he is leading a wasteful life. The
mouth which sings praise of Lord Vishnu is the
mouth, the hands that perform pooja to him are the
hands, the ears that hear him are ears, the eyes
that see him are eyes and the mind that thinks of
him is mind. Who everdoes not sing praise of the
Lord is a fool. Therefore Oh! Garuda, with pure
mind and controlled senses perform pooja to
Hrusheekesha with devotion. Please perform pooja

to Lord Nrusimha with sincere devotion. The almighty
Lord who is full of compassion will lift you up from
this samsara and give you eternal bliss.
Garuda heard the words of his father with reverence,
he prostrated before him and said oh! Father I learnt
the greatest item from you today. With your grace I
will be able to please the Lord. I will follow what
you have advised. Sage Kashyapa continued My
son! If you please Lord Hari with your devotion there
will be nothing that will be impossible for you. There
is a place on the Earth called AHOBILAM which is
full of forest, mountains and caves. There is a tallest
mountain there known as NARAYANADRI. That place
is dear to Lord Narayana. Please choose that place
for your devotion filled penance and you will succeed.
Such will be your devotion to the Lord that in future
with Lords grace, the mountain will be renamed
as GARUDADRI / GARUDACHALAM.
Following the advise of his father Garuda reached
Ahobilam and was at Narayandari. He was
overwhelmed by the vastness of the place and
mountain. Which spot here is to be chosen for
performing devoted penance to Lord. Garuda was
confused. At that time he heard a divine sound Oh!
Garuda! The person revered by devas! This place
is divine place and is Lord Narasimhas loved place.
Here many revered people the devas, gandharvas,
siddhas, sages have performed devoted penance
and attained Lord Nrisimhas grace and his feet.
You can chose any place here and perform your
penance and Lord will become pleased. Said the
voice and stopped. Garuda considered that his luck,
his fathers grace and Lords grace has made him
hear this divine voice. He chose a place at the foot
of the hill called Gajakundam and performed his
devoted penance there. The Penance of Garuda
was so devout that the earth was unable to bear
and there was heat everywhere. Lord Indira panicked
at the power of Garuda and so were all devas. Lord
Indira turned to Urvashi his most beautiful damsel
and requested her to entice Garuda so that the
penance can be shattered. But Urvashis beauty
could not attract and shatter the determination of
Garuda. She was defeated by the devotion and had
to return.

PANINIAN FROM PARIS

In a sense, no old language is a living one, because
all languages change, and that is a fact of history.
After establishing contact with Dr. Pierre Sylvain Filliozat,
I had to wait for many months to interview him, because
he spends six months of the year in Paris and six
months in India, and even while in India, he is travelling,
giving lectures, and visiting temples.
Son of Dr. Jean Filliozat, founder of the French Institute,
Pondicherry, Dr. Pierre Filliozat is this years Presidential
awardee for Sanskrit (International). Filliozat studied
classical languages in Paris, and Vyakarana and Saiva
agamas in Pondicherry, under M. S. Narasimhacharya
and N.R. Bhatt, respectively. He learnt about
Visishtadvaita too from Narasimhacharya. According
to Dr. Filliozat, Manipravala, used in Vaishnava
commentaries, is a unique, difficult language, because
it is an amalgam of classical Tamil and Sanskrit.
Dr. Filliozat talks of the resilience of Sanskrit and points
to how it not only borrowed words from other languages
but assimilated them, thereby enriching itself. The Vedic
root - nrt means to dance. But in Middle Indian, the
vowel r is replaced by a. So in Middle Indian, nrt
becomes nat. In his list of roots, Panini gives both
nrt and nat for dance. Panini extracted roots from
other languages and applied his rules to them.
Dr. Filliozat says Sanskrit pandits created a remarkable
technical vocabulary for mathematics, astronomy, logic,
etc. He expresses his admiration for the complicated
sentences of the nyaya texts, where one noun is followed
by many adjectives, and a sentence covers a whole
page. This style is seen in poetry too, as for example,
Banabhattas Kadambari. How can something so
complex be appealing? The complexity is what makes
it appealing. There is a saying in Sanskrit that a grape
yields its sweetness as soon as it is bitten, but the
taste soon disappears. Sugarcane is tough to chew,
but the sweet taste lingers. So it is with Sanskrit poetry.
Reading repeatedly, to catch all the suggested
meanings, is a pleasurable exercise.
Talking of the oral tradition of learning, Dr. Filliozat points
to Paninis use of auditory markers to indicate properties
and operations of grammatical elements. When
grammar came to be written, pandits did not use
symbols to indicate tone and adventitious nasalisation
which had disappeared. Instead they mentioned these
properties in the manuscripts. Panini also resorts to
ellipsis. He deliberately omits repeating words, which
have the same syntactical constructions in consecutive
propositions, but the term is implied. Someone like
my teacher Narasimhacharya, had no difficulty following
any of this, because he had committed the Sutras to
memory. But if you are using a book, you will have a
tough time.
So, given the oral tradition, would a literate person in
Paninian times be defined as one who was master
of the spoken word? Yes, indeed. Even in recent times,
we had a pandit called Abhyankar, in Pune, who could
not read and write, but authored books on Sanskrit
grammar and Advaita. Scribes would take down as he
dictated his books. So here we have an example of a
very great scholar, who, in modern terminology, would
be termed illiterate!

Dr. Filliozat says, Patanjali considered that a person

could learn a language, without studying the grammar,
that there was a language that was innate. That sounds
like Chomsky, I exclaim! Chomsky said that all human
beings are born with a language faculty. According to
Chomsky, to say that someone knows a language is
to state that his language faculty is in that state. So
could we say Patanjali was an ancient Chomsky, I ask.
You could say that, laughs Filliozat. Patanjali was
concerned with very broad linguistic issues.
Was Sanskrit the language of one community alone?
No. In the Shadvamsa Brahmana, for example, a
Brahmin teacher prefers his student from another sect
because the latter is smarter. Patanjali himself
recognises the excellence of a coachman who corrects
a grammarian.
Dr. Filliozats definition of Sanskrit is somewhat different
from the usual. He says one must go beyond mere
etymology while defining Samskrita. Samskara, which
comes from the same root, means preparation for
an action. Samskaras in everyday life make us fit for
various activities. Language is Samskrita, when it is
accompanied by a rule-based grammar such as
Paninis. Because of this samskara of grammar,
the language Samskrita is perfect, for the functioning
of the mind in every field of activity.
Talking of the geographical spread of Sanskrit, Dr. Filliozat
says that in South Indian inscriptions, the panegyric
which speaks of the greatness of kings was in Sanskrit,
because Sanskrit was known beyond the borders of
the Indian sub-continent, and foreigners would know
of the greatness of a king, only if he was written about
in Sanskrit. Chinese pilgrims could stop over at Sumatra,
learn Sanskrit, and then come to India, linguistically
equipped to travel all over the country!
According to Filliozat, Sanskrit is a living language. But
it is nobodys mother tongue, I counter. Even in the
last census, there were people who declared Sanskrit
their mother tongue. Many institutions and pandits keep
Sanskrit alive. There is even a Sanskrit daily, called
Sudharma, which has been in circulation for 45 years.
It gives political news and even has an editorial.
In a sense, no old language is a living one, because

What about Tamil? Do you speak the beautiful Tamil
of the Sangam period? he asks.
Dr. Filliozat has a Ph.D. in Alankara Sastra, and taught
Sanskrit in Paris. He has published 20 books on
various subjects including Ashtadyayi, Patanajalis
Mahabhashya and Vedanta Desikas Varadaraja
Panchasat.
Partner in research
Dr. Filliozats wife Vasundhara, whose Ph.D. is on
Vijayanagar inscriptions, talks about Lakula Saivism.
She says its foundation was Vedic, and of its four
branches, Kalamukha and Pasupatha came to South
India and were popular in Karnataka from the 6th
century C.E. onwards. Lakulisa Pasupathas pioneered
Trikutalayas, where the main sanctum was for Siva,
in whose supremacy they believed, with two sanctums
for other deities. Wherever they built temples, Lakulisa
Pasupathas established schools, where grammar,
Vedanta and yoga were taught. A special salary was
given to teachers of Kaumara vyakarana. In Khajuraho,

there is a sculpture of Skanda holding a manuscript.

The people there say the manuscript is Kaumara
vyakarana, although they do not know where it was
taught. Colebrook made a copy of a manuscript of
Kaumara Vyakarana, which he found in Moodbidri Jaina
matha, in Karnataka, and this copy is in India Office
Library, London.
Vasundhara feels that French scholars of Sanskrit are
not as widely known in India as their work warrants.
The first European professor of Sanskrit was Frenchman
Chezy, who gave his first lecture in 1815. Chezy found
a Bengali manuscript of Kalidasas Sakuntalam in Paris.
So he learnt Bengali, transliterated the text to Devanagari
and then translated it to French. Burnoff translated Srimad
Bhagavatam and a portion of the Ramayana into French.
Neither of them visited India!
Vasundhara is a recipient of Kannada Rajyotsava Award,
and has co- authored books on Saiva temples with
her husband, whom she met while studying under his

CHILKUR BALAJI'S GRACE

My son was very healthy. In the year 2002
his health worsened. He becomes lightly weak in
the Mind. We showed to many doctors but there
was no benefit. We came to Chilkur and prayed with
the swami. The Archaka at the Temple saw us and
enquired about the problem. I explained my sons
problem. We told the Archaka that my son was very
healthy at one time but suddenly he has become
like this. The Archaka assured us that everything
would become fine and asked us to chant 'OM
GOVINDAYA NAMAHA', 'OM AKSHARAYA
NAMAHA', 'OM PUTATMANEY NAMAHA' and 108
Govinda Namas to be chanted every day. Balaji swamy
will take care and all the difficulties would go assured
the Archaka while putting a garland on my sons
neck. We thought that the Swami spoke to us in
the form of the Archaka. We came back home. After
that, we started chanting the Govinda Namas and
within few months my boy became alright and his
ill health disappeared. He is doing his own business
and has recovered fully. Recently, we saw the devotees
experience and wanted to share ours also. The Swami
has blessed us so many times earlier also. It is all
His divine grace.

THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF JAYALALITHAA'S CONTRIBUTION TO

PRESERVE DEVOTION TO ALMIGHTY THROUGH TEMPLE WORSHIP HAS BEEN MISSED
Late Hon'ble Chief Minister Selvi Jayalalithaa's contribution to preserve devotion to Almighty
exhibited through Temple worship for thousands of years and streamlined by Lord Ramanuja which
was under severe threat of extinction in Tamil Nadu due to the ideology of her political opponents
cannot be forgotten. Surely history will record this as her single most important contribution to our
Society which largely believes in existence of God and Temple worship with largest number of Divya
Deshams being in Tamil Nadu standing testimony to the concept of devotion to Almighty being integral
part of the Culture of not only people of Tamil Nadu but of all the people of our Country. She fought
against the destruction of Ram Setu and supported the cause for a temple for Lord Ram in Ayodhya
all this when it was the ideology of her political opponents to denigrate devotion to Lord Ram to gain
electoral supremacy. She never shied away from expressing devotion to the Almighty through Temple
Worship and was so successful that her opponents had to partially own Lord Ramanuja's philosophy
to stay relevant in Tamil Nadu politics. It is pertinent that she credited her historic victory against
tremendous odds in the 2016 elections to the Almighty.
