Professor Pendrake says "My first, and only, ferry


ride with a boatman came during a visit to my
residence in Corvis. When I arrived at the piers an
old ferryman was just pulling into dock. I hailed
him, and he waved me aboard wwih a most Barge PoleGentleman
Grymkin, / Scythe Stranger
welcoming grin.
"Where to gov-'na?" said the ferryman with a
creaking voice and appraising look. After giving
him directions to the pier nearest my home, we
made great time across the Black River. It was a
most peaceful moonlit evening, and I soon found
myself settled in and quite drowsy. A fog rolled in.
Suddenly the boat began taking on water and as I
moved to bail it out I saw something moving in the
water. Looking back I found myself face to face
with the twisted form of a boatman reaching out,
his breath salty enough to bring tears to my eyes.
Remembering my boatman folklore I said "I have
a bargain for you."
"A bargain is it then?" hissed the boatman, his
fingers paused a breath away fro my lips, "What
bauble will you give me for safe passsage? Think
quickly, for a moment is all you have." My first few
guesses met with grotesque grins, "It seems my
family will grow by one tonight." Luckily my final
guess hit upon his fancy - a pair of fine leather
boots from Khador - and after the exchange he
agreed to return me to my residence.
