Competency:
Counts the number of occurrences of an event using: (a) a grid
table; (b) a tree diagram; (c) systematic listing
Uses the fundamental counting principle to count the number of
arrangements or ways that a task can be carried out.
Defines a permutation of n objects taken n at a time.
I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of one hour, students shall be able to:
a. ACTIVITY:
1. Consider a set of letters, {A, C, T}. How many ways are there to arrange these
letters?
Solution 1:
a. Using grid table

C CAT CTA 2

b. tree diagram

2. Ask for four representatives from the class and let them demonstrate the set of
arrangement they could have out of themselves and determine the number of ways.
Solution:
b. ANALYSIS
1. Were you able to list all the possibilities asked for? What method(s) did you
use in order to give the accurate count?
2. Did you encounter any difficulty in illustrating the permutations of the object?
How?
c. ABSTRACTION
Direction: In a one sheet of paper, answer the following using any methods.
Consider a set of letters, {H, A, V, E}. How many ways are there to arrange
these letters? Use two of the four methods presented.
