Brief History in Japan
• A Korean courtier introduced the Falconry in 355. Nihon
shoki
• Office of Falconry 主鷹司[shutakushi] in 701. Taiho ritsuryo
• Emperor Kanmu 桓武天皇 made 123 hunts in 783-803,
while Emperor Saga 嵯峨天皇 made 73.
• Manyoshu, Tale of Genji, Konjaku monogatari, waka.
• House of Falconry 鷹の家:Saionji 西園寺、Jimyoin 持明院、
Nijo 二条、Kujo 九条 in the 14th century.
• Oda Nobunaga 織田信長, Toyotomi Hideyoshi 豊臣秀吉,
Tokugawa Ieyasu 徳川家康 loved, Tsunayoshi 綱吉 stopped
(1687-1716), Yoshimune 吉宗 revived falconry. 3

書印, name slip, and accession date.
• 4 manuscripts were copied from Jimyoin
Motoharu’s 持明院基春 copies, it seems.

one has the same accession date as Falconry
manuscripts.

松平定信 Matsudaita Sadanobu (1759-1829)
8th Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune 徳川吉宗
(r. 1716-1745 ) restarted falconry in 1716.

Tayasu Munetake 田安宗武, the second son of


Yoshimune received falconry fields 恩賜鷹場
from the Shogun in 1738.

Sadanobu, son of Munetake, became


the lord of Shirakawa domain in 1778.
He was appointed as Chief senior
councilor 老中 (1787-1793) for the 11th
Shogun Ienari 家斉 . Returned to the
domain in 1794 and involeved in the
domain school “Rikkyokan” 立教館.

Langdon Warner (1881-1955)
Art historian, explorer, archaeologist,
and Asian art collector Langdon
Warner graduated from Harvard in
1903. From 1923 until his retirement
in 1950, he was associated with the
Fogg Art Museum of Harvard
University under various titles,
including curator of Asian art. At the
Fogg, he built a prominent collection
of Asian art and founded the Rübel
Asiatic Research Bureau. Warner
traveled extensively throughout
Japan, China, and other parts of Asia,
and he was the author and editor of
various publications on Asian art.

Langdon Warner (1881-1955) and Japan
• Warner met Okakura Kakuzo at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
in 1906. MFA sent him to Japan to study its art and language. He
met a group of Okakura students: Niiro Chunosuke (sculptor),
Rokkaku Shisui (metalworker), Okabe Kakuya (lacquerer),
Yokoyama Taiakan (painter).

「鷹口伝」 「後醍醐天皇嘉暦3年2月23日書写オワ
ンヌ。此鷹譜者自禅厳寺殿西郷殿参ルヲ大巣殿
御相伝自其写オワンヌ。」 [Copied on the 23rd day
of the 2nd month in 1328. This Falconry book came
from the lord Zengenji to the lord Saigo, which the
lord Osu copied.]
「永正13年6月19日左金吾藤[花押] 持明院基春卿
筆写」 [Copied by the Lord Jimyoin Motoharu on
the 19th day of the 6th month in 1519.]
