Langdon Warner (1881-1955)
Art historian, explorer, archaeologist,
and Asian art collector Langdon
Warner graduated from Harvard in
1903. From 1923 until his retirement
in 1950, he was associated with the
Fogg Art Museum of Harvard
University under various titles,
including curator of Asian art. At the
Fogg, he built a prominent collection
of Asian art and founded the Rübel
Asiatic Research Bureau. Warner
traveled extensively throughout
Japan, China, and other parts of Asia,
and he was the author and editor of
various publications on Asian art.

Langdon Warner (1881-1955) and Japan
• Warner met Okakura Kakuzo at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
in 1906. MFA sent him to Japan to study its art and language. He
met a group of Okakura students: Niiro Chunosuke (sculptor),
Rokkaku Shisui (metalworker), Okabe Kakuya (lacquerer),
Yokoyama Taiakan (painter).
