Benefits
Vocabulary Checking
Before reading, the volunteers or TEENBAYAN officers will go over possible new words,
with proper pronunciation and explaining what these words mean. Comprehension in reading
rely on a combination of vocabulary, context, and the interaction of words. A struggle in
understanding one word may change the flow of what you have established while reading.
Using these newly discovered words in a sentence will be a good strategy.
In this method, volunteer workers will interact with students. After reading a material out
loud, they’ll try to evaluate what the students have learned, what was the story all about and
other questions that can tickle the mind of the listeners. One strategy to improve reading
comprehension is asking the child what he or she learned and his or her thoughts. When talking
about the material with the learner, asking him or her to recap and summarize the main points
will result to critical thinking. Letting the child explain in his or her own words ensures that
he/she understands what was read. It also helps relate the idea/concept to what he or she
already knows.
Exploring Interests
In this method, children will have the opportunity to pick a book that suits his/her interest
on a specific time. Sometimes, low reading comprehension comes down to the fact that a student
just isn’t interested in what he or she is reading. In fact, 73% of students say they would read
more if they could find books they liked (Oxford Learning, 2018).
