DATA COMMUNICATION AND NETWORKING

Course Objectives: This course will enable students to:

1. Build an understanding of the fundamental concepts of computer


networking.
2. Introduce to the data communication aspects in computer networks.
3. Discuss protocols related to data link and network layers.

UNIT – I
Network Models: Layered tasks, OSI Model, Layers in OSI model, TCP/IP
Suite, Addressing, Multiplexing, Transmission media: Guided media,
unguided media. 10 hours
UNIT – II
Data Link Control: Framing, Flow and error control, Protocols, Noiseless
channels and noisy channels, HDLC, Point-to-Point Protocol.

UNIT – III
Multiple Accesses: Random access, Controlled access, Channelisation,
Token Bus and Token Ring Standards: IEEE 802.4, IEEE 802.5.

UNIT – IV
Wired LAN: Ethernet, IEEE standards, Standard Ethernet, Changes in the
standards, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, Wireless LAN: IEEE 802.11,
Bluetooth, Connecting LANs, Backbone Networks and Virtual LANs:
Connecting devices, Backbone Networks, Virtual LANs.

UNIT – V
Network Layer- Logical addressing: Ipv4 addresses, Ipv6 addresses,
Internet Protocol: Ipv4, Ipv6, Transition from Ipv4 to Ipv6. Routing
Algorithms: The Optimality Principle, Shortest Path Routing, Flooding,
Distance Vector Routing, Link State Routing, Hierarchical Routing, Quality
of Service, Transport Layer: Process to process delivery, UDP, TCP.
