The steam condenses as a result of the drop in temperature; in practice, the front fan draws in air from
outside at ambient temperature and directs it onto the condenser, which consequently is cooled.
The condenser is equipped with two seals stuck longitudinally to the top and the bottom right hand side,
so that hot air from the drum and cool air drawn in from outside by the front fan will not come into contact.
Water produced by condensation of the steam is directed into the pump reservoir, located at the rear of
the machine, and forced from here into the collection tray at the top of the machine.

Should the user forget to empty the tray, water will spill eventually through an overflow in the tray holder.
From here, the water is returned to the pump reservoir, where the level will then rise and ultimately trip the
float switch.

The temperature of the hot air blown into the drum is controlled by two sensors (NTC), front and rear, which
monitor the temperature during the cycle and inform the mainboard.
The drying quality and times are governed by a conductivity sensor that interacts with the two NTC sen-
sors and informs the mainboard as to the level of moisture and how far the fabrics have dried during the
programme.

In the electromechanical dryer, safety is guaranteed by thermostats mounted in the upper part of the heater
housing (one resettable and cycling on/off to keep the air temperature within 120 °C, the other a one-shot
type that opens irreversibly when exposed to a temperature of 150 °C).

Depending on the type of machine (Ariston or Indesit), drying temperatures are governed by thermostats
positioned adjacent to the hot air (steam) duct.
• Ariston machines have two thermostats set at 55 °C and 60 °C; one or other of the two will operate,
depending on the selected cycle (automatic programmes). When the set point temperature is detected
by the sensor, one heating element will be deactivated. The final 10 minutes of the programme are allo-
cated to cooling the fabrics.
• Indesit machines have just one self-resetting thermostat that will deactivate both heating elements when
the temperature reaches 78 °C and reactivate them when the temperature drops. The timer will end the pro-
gramme according to the selected duration; the final step of the programme serves to cool the fabrics.

2.3 Electronic control logic

Estimate of programme duration on the basis of communication between the two
NTC sensors and the conductivity sensor.
The method for calculating the duration of programmes is as follows:
• Each drying cycle includes a procedure, active for the first 10’, in which the controller establishes the
type of load, and in particular the moisture content.
• With the programme selected, the dryer runs cold for a period of 10 minutes during which the software,
interacting with the front and rear NTC sensors and the conductivity sensor, will calculate the time nee-
ded to complete the cycle. During this initial stage, the display will show a maximum programme time of

2 Operation
2 hours and 20 minutes (Ariston with display).

Electrical and electromechanical loads and duration of single programmes

Electronic condenser and vented dryers.
Once the 10 minutes moisture content detection time has elapsed, the rear NTC sensor enables activation
of the loads and the drying programme starts.
The static heating element is always on, whereas the dynamic element cycles on and off according to the
temperature at the front NTC sensor.
The front NTC sensor measures the temperature of the air leaving the drum, the rear NTC sensor mea-
sures the temperature in the heater enclosure; the conductivity sensor monitors moisture in the load and
combines with the two NTCs to determine the duration of the programme.
As the moisture content drops, the temperature at the front of the drum approaches the temperature at the
rear.
This calculation is repeated every 40 seconds approx. The conductivity sensor, to which an input current
is applied at 5 Vdc, measures the moisture content of the load by way of a sensing strip wired to the GND
connection on the mainboard. The control module compares the resistance with a known reference value
for the selected programme and, utilizing algorithms and the readings from the front and rear NTC sensors,
proceeds to compute the cycle time remaining.

2.4 ELECTROMECHANICAL CONTROL LOGIC

Electromechanical condenser dryers.
The programme of electromechanical dryers is governed by a heat switch (if installed) on the control panel
(selects high or low temperature), a programmer, and a thermostat located in the front air duct. The user
selects high or low temperature by way of the switch, and sets the duration of the cycle by selecting the
desired programme with the programmer. At the start of the programme, the heating element is on and the
temperature controlled by a thermostat positioned on the front air duct, which will pilot the element to cut
in and out as necessary until the cooling stage is reached.
Electromechanical vented dryers.
The programme of electromechanical dryers is governed by a heat switch, a programmer, and a thermostat
located in the front air duct. The user selects high or low temperature by way of the switch, and sets the
duration of the cycle with the programmer. At the start of the programme, the heating element is on and the
temperature controlled by a thermostat positioned on the front air duct, until the moment when the timer
switches to the cooling stage.

Electromechanical vented dryers.

Certain versions of electromechanical dryer have three automatic ECO programmes, two of which are
controlled by two thermostats (50 °C and 60 °C) located in the front air duct, and the third by the timer
(approx 10’ duration).
The user selects the automatic programme as desired (full or half load), and sets the drying temperature.
Once the temperature set point for the programme is reached, the dynamic heating element will be deac-
tivated.
The third Eco programme is a short cycle (10 minutes) using a high temperature setting selected by the
user. In this instance there is no thermostat control.

2 Operation
The timed programme is controlled by the timer. The user selects high or low temperature by way of the
switch, and the selected duration of the programme is controlled by the timer.
At the start of the programme, the heating element is on and the temperature controlled by the thermostat
positioned on the front air duct, which will pilot one half of the heater to cut in and out as necessary until
the moment when the timer switches to the cooling stage.
The operating temperatures of the front thermostats are 55 °C for full load and 60 °C for half load.
These models have a separate reversing timer positioned at the bottom of the casing, near the front, which
enables counterclockwise rotation of the drum and deactivation of the heating elements.

Air temperatures for single programmes

• Indesit electromechanical condenser dryers: front thermostat operates at 78 °C.
• Indesit electromechanical vented dryers: front thermostat operates at 58 °C
• Electromechanical vented dryers (Ariston): operating temperatures of the front thermostats are 55 °C
for full load and 60 °C for half load.

programme will resume. If the door is open, the START button will first have to be pressed to resume
the programme.
! START/CANCEL button: pressing and holding this button, the programme will be cancelled, with
the display indicating ON.

2 Operation
Option buttons / icons
These buttons are used to personalize the selected programme on the basis of individual needs and pre-
ferences. Before any option can be selected, a programme must be activated by pressing a programme
selection button.

Not all the options are available for all programmes (see Start and programmes section). If an option is
not available and the relative button is pressed, a succession of four beeps will be heard. If the option is
available, a single beep is heard and the option icon blinks to confirm the selection.

Delayed Start
The start of certain programmes (see Start and programmes section) can be delayed by up to 18 hours.
Make certain that the condensate tray is empty before setting a delayed start. To set the timer, press the
delayed start button: the display reads OFF and the DELAYED START icon lights up. Pressing the button a
section time, a delay of one hour is selected and the display reads 1:hr. Pressing the button again, another
hour is added to the delay. Pressing the button when the display reads 18:hr, the message OFF appears
and after a few seconds the delayed start will be cancelled.

Pre Care
This option is available only if a delayed start has been selected. The clothes are tumbled occasionally
during the delay period, to help avoid the formation of creases in the fabric.

Alarm
Available on all programmes. Activating the alarm, the buzzer will sound at the end of the drying cycle to
remind the user that the clothes are ready to take out. Press the button, and the icon will indicate that the
option is selected.

Post Care
When this option is available and selected, clothes not removed immediately from the machine on comple-
tion of the programmed drying and cooling cycles will be tumbled again occasionally so as to prevent the
formation of creases in the fabric.

TIME DISPLAY
Thedisplay shows both the time remaining until a delayed start is due, and the time remaining until com-
pletion of a drying programme. The delayed start is displayed in hours, and counts down hour by hour. The
DELAYED START icon blinks after the start button has been pressed.

The time remaining until the end of the process, including the cooling step, is displayed in hours and minutes
and counted down minute by minute. The display shows HIGH temperature 2:20 or LOW temperature 2:20.
When timer delayed programmes are selected, the time displayed during the cycle is the time remaining
at that particular moment.

When an automatic programme is selected, the time displayed is a forecast of the time remaining. Once a
programme has been selected, the display indicates the time needed to dry a full load, then after approxi-
mately 10 minutes the controller will compute a more accurate forecast of the time remaining.

The dots between the hours and minutes blink in the display to indicate the time elapsing.

Once the the drying step of the programme has finished, the message END is displayed. The display will

also indicate any fault affecting the dryer. In this eventuality, the letter F appears followed by a fault code
number (see Fault finding).

Empty water icon / Tray

(If the dryer is connected to a drain line, this icon can be ignored as there is no need to empty the conden-
sate tray).
When this icon is alight (permanently) it reminds the user to empty the tray. If the tray should fill up during
the course of a programme, the heater switches off and the dryer activates a Cooling step. In this situation,
the icon blinks and the buzzer will sound.
At this point, the dryer stops, all the progress icons light up, and the empty water icon blinks.
The tray must now be emptied and the machine restarted, otherwise the clothes will not dry. After restarting
the dryer, a few seconds will elapse before the alarm condition of the icon is reset.
To prevent this situation from occurring and avoid having to restart, empty the tray every time the dryer is
used (see Maintenance section).

Opening the door

If the door is opened with a programme in progress, the dryer will stop and the following situation is crea-
ted:
› All 4 progress icons light up.
› During a delay period, the delay will continue to count down. The START button must be pressed to
reinstate a delay programme.
The progress icons change to indicate the current status.
› During the drying stage of the programme, the dots on the display cease blinking to indicate that the
time is beginning to run down.
The START button must be pressed to reinstate the programme. The progress icons change to indicate
the current status, the dots blink, and the countdown continues.
› During an drying or cooling programme, or during a Post Care, the programme finishes and the message
END is displayed.
Note
In the event of a power failure, switch off or unplug the machine, then press the START button and the
programme will be reinstated.

OPTION buttons / indicators

These buttons are used to personalize the selected programme on the basis of individual needs and prefe-
rences. Before any option can be selected, a programme must be selected with the knob. Not all the options
are available for all programmes (see Start and programmes section). If an option is not available and the
relative button is pressed, a succession of four beeps will be heard. If the option is available, a single beep
is heard and the relative option indicator will light up to confirm the selection.
Progress ( Drying, Cooling, Post Care) / Delay (3 hours, 6 hours, 9 hours, 12 hours) Indicators
When the indicator alongside the delayed programming button is alight, these indicators blink to show that
the delay time has been selected. During other programmes, these indicate the stage of the drying sequen-
ce, each lighting up at the start of the corresponding step.

2 Operation
Delayed Start
The start of certain programmes (see Start and programmes section) can be delayed by up to 12 hours, in
3 hour steps. Make certain that the condensate tray is empty before setting a delayed start.
When a delayed start has been selected, the indicator alongside the delayed start button will remain alight
and the selected delay period will blink (after pressing the START button).
To set a delayed start, press the Delay Time button, and the indicator alongside the button will light up
together with the 3 hour delay indicator. Pressing the button a second time, the delay increases to 6 hours:
the 3 hour indicator will go out and the 6 hour indicator will light up. Each time the delay setting button is
pressed, the delay increases by 3 hours, as shown by the corresponding indicator. If the 12 hour delay
indicator is alight, pressing the button again will cancel the delay.
The delay can also be cancelled by turning the programme knob to the 0 position, waiting for the buzzer to
sound, and then returning to the selected programme.

Pre Care
When a delayed start has been selected, the clothes are tumbled occasionally during the delay period to
help avoid the formation of creases in the fabric.

High temperature
This button, when available, selects a high temperature. Pressing the button, a high temperature is selected
and the indicator alongside the button lights up.
Timed programmes are factory-set to run at low temperature; if the indicator alongside the button is alight,
pressing the button has the effect of selecting low temperature and the indicator goes off.

Alarm
Available on all programmes. Activating the alarm, the buzzer will sound at the end of the drying cycle to
remind the user that the clothes are ready to take out. Press the button, and the indicator will indicate that
the option is selected.

Post Care
If clothes are not removed immediately from the machine on completion of the programmed drying and coo-
ling cycles, they will be tumbled again occasionally so as to prevent the formation of creases in the fabric.
