Holy Communion

Welcome & Notices

The Gathering
The Gathering (pg 1)

The president may say

In the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
All Amen.
The president greets the people

Grace, mercy and peace

from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you
and also with you.

Prayer of Preparation (pg 1)

This prayer may be said
Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Prayers of Penitence (pg 2)
The following summary of the Law may be used
Our Lord Jesus Christ said:
The first commandment is this:
‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord.
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul, with all your mind,
and with all your strength.’
The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’
There is no other commandment greater than these.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the
prophets.
Amen. Lord, have mercy.
A minister uses a seasonal invitation to confession or these or other suitable words
Jesus says, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’

So let us turn away from sin and turn to Christ,

confessing our sins in penitence and faith.

Confession (pg 2-3)

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you
and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
who died for us, forgive us all that is past
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name.
Amen.
Absolution (pg 3)
The president says
God, the Father of mercies,
has reconciled the world to himself
through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ,
not counting our trespasses against us,
but sending his Holy Spirit
to shed abroad his love among us.
By the ministry of reconciliation
entrusted by Christ to his Church,
receive his pardon and peace
to stand before him in his strength alone,
this day and evermore.
Amen.

Gloria in Excelsis (pg 4)

Please stand
The Gloria may be said or sung
Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father:
receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.
The Collect
The president introduces a period of silent prayer with the words
‘Let us pray’ or a more specific bidding.
The Collect is said, and all respond
God the Father,
help us to hear the call of Christ the King
and to follow in his service,
whose kingdom has no end;
for he reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, one glory.
Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

Reading (pg 5)
Ephesians 1.15-23
15
I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love[a] towards all the saints, and
for this reason 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers.
17
I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit
of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, 18 so that, with the eyes of your heart
enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the
riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable
greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power.
20
God[b] put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated
him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power
and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the
age to come. 22 And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over
all things for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
Gospel Reading
Matthew 25.31-46
When the Gospel is announced the reader says
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord.
31
‘When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit
on the throne of his glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will
separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats,
33
and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. 34 Then the king
will say to those at his right hand, “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the
kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you
gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and
you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took
care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” 37 Then the righteous will answer him,
“Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you
something to drink? 38 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or
naked and gave you clothing? 39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and
visited you?” 40 And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of
the least of these who are members of my family,[a] you did it to me.” 41 Then he will say
to those at his left hand, “You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire
prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was
thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome
me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.”
44
Then they also will answer, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a
stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?” 45 Then he will
answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did
not do it to me.” 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into
eternal life.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

The Apostle’s Creed (p. 7)
Use Nicene or Apostle’s Creed
(or) pg 7:
Let us declare our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, in the words of the Apostle’s
Creed:
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day He rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.
Prayers of Intercession (pg 8)
Please sit or kneel
Jesus our exalted Lord has been given all authority.
Let us seek his intercession,
that our prayers may be perfected by his prayer.
Jesus Christ, great high priest, living for ever to intercede for us:
pray for your Church, your broken body in the world …
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Jesus Christ, King of righteousness,
enthroned at the right hand of the majesty on high:
pray for the world, and make it subject to your gentle rule …
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Jesus Christ, Son of man, drawing humanity into the life of God:
pray for your brothers and sisters in need, distress or sorrow …
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Jesus Christ, pioneer of our salvation,
bringing us to your glory through your death and resurrection:
pray for all who are dying,
that they may trust in your promises …
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Jesus Christ, Lord of all things,
ascended far above from the heavens and filling the universe:
pray for us who receive the gifts you give us for
work in your service …
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Jesus Christ, first-fruits of the new creation,
keep the Church in the unity of the Spirit
and in the bond of peace,
until you bring the whole created order to worship at your feet;
for you are alive and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
And at the end
Merciful Father,
accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.

The Liturgy of the Sacrament

The Peace (pg 9)
Please stand
The president introduces the Peace with a suitable sentence
May the God of peace sanctify you:
may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness
that you may be blameless before him
at the coming of our Lord Jesus with his saints.
1 Thessalonians 5.23; 3.13

and then says

The peace of the Lord be always with you
and also with you.
If you're watching with other members of your household, share a sign of peace with them
- or why not put a comment on the Facebook chat
All may exchange a sign of peace.

Preparation of the Table

A hymn may be sung.
The gifts of the people may be gathered and presented.
The table is prepared and bread and wine are placed upon it.
One of the prayers at the preparation of the table may be used.
The president takes the bread and wine.
Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power,
the glory, the splendour, and the majesty;
for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.
All things come from you,
and of your own do we give you.
(or)
Wise and gracious God,
you spread a table before us;
nourish your people with the word of life
and bread of heaven.
Amen
The Eucharistic Prayer Preface
Prayer E
The Lord is here.
His Spirit is with us.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,
that we should always sing of your glory,
holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
For you are the hope of the nations,
the builder of the city that is to come.
Your love made visible in Jesus Christ
brings home the lost,
restores the sinner
and gives dignity to the despised.
In his face your light shines out,
flooding lives with goodness and truth,
gathering into one in your kingdom
a divided and broken humanity.
Therefore with all who can give voice in your creation
we glorify your name,
for ever praising you and saying:
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Eurcharistic Prayer continued
Prayer E (p.10)

We praise and bless you, loving Father,

through Jesus Christ, our Lord;
and as we obey his command,
send your Holy Spirit,
that broken bread and wine outpoured
may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.
On the night before he died he had supper with his friends
and, taking bread, he praised you.
He broke the bread, gave it to them and said:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.
When supper was ended he took the cup of wine.
Again he praised you, gave it to them and said:
Drink this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.
So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did,
in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice
made once for all upon the cross.
Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation,
we proclaim his death and resurrection
until he comes in glory.
[Praise to you, Lord Jesus:]
Dying you destroyed our death,
rising you restored our life:
Lord Jesus, come in glory.
Lord of all life,
help us to work together for that day
when your kingdom comes
and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth.
Look with favour on your people,
gather us in your loving arms
and bring us with all the saints
to feast at your table in heaven.
Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
The service continues with the Lord’s Prayer on page 21.

The Lord’s Prayer (p. 21)

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

Breaking of the Bread (p. 22)

The president breaks the consecrated bread.
We break this bread
to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.
(or)
Every time we eat this bread
and drink this cup,
we proclaim the Lord’s death
until he comes.
Agnus Dei
Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world,
grant us peace.
(or)
Jesus, Lamb of God,
have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins,
have mercy on us.
Jesus, redeemer of the world,
grant us peace.
Giving of Communion (p. 23)
The president says one of these invitations to communion

Jesus is the Lamb of God

who takes away the sin of the world.
Blessed are those who are called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,
but only say the word, and I shall be healed.
(or)
God’s holy gifts
for God’s holy people.
Jesus Christ is holy,
Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
This prayer may be said before the distribution
Most merciful Lord,
your love compels us to come in.
Our hands were unclean,
our hearts were unprepared;
we were not fit
even to eat the crumbs from under your table.
But you, Lord, are the God of our salvation,
and share your bread with sinners.
So cleanse and feed us
with the precious body and blood of your Son,
that he may live in us and we in him;
and that we, with the whole company of Christ,
may sit and eat in your kingdom.
Amen.
The president and people receive communion.
Authorized words of distribution are used and the communicant replies
Amen.
During the distribution hymns or songs may be sung.
