TRAINING DRILLS AND TRAINING DESIGN

These training activities have the technical/tactical characteristics of

• Reduced number of players

• Reduced Game duration
• Restricted Space for exercise
• Equal to Game Intensity

Examples: Finishing situations, Attacking Options

TEAM - SPEED DOMINANT
TRAINING DRILLS AND TRAINING DESIGN

These training activities have the general physical characteristics

• Greater number of Speed efforts

• Performed at 100% effort but adequate rest between efforts
• ‘Speed’ relates to perceptive and decisional speed
• Speed Must be present in all training situations
• Maximum Acceleration effort but no (or very limited deceleration)
• 1:5 rest:work ratio
• Movement distance is shorter
• Maximum 15 yd/m burst/effort

2. ANAEROBIC - INTENSITY – WORK-RATE

WHAT IS THE PHYSICAL OUTCOME? 3. ALACTIC - POWER – STRENGTH – SPEED

HOW DO I GET A HIGH AEROBIC AND ENDURANCE ELEMENT?
Use a larger pitch size or keep the team sizes low to create space
and encourage running.
Play Lengthways and keep the pitch length longer than width

I W A N T A H I G H P H Y S I C A L E F F E C T A N D A H I G H P L AY E R L O A D E F F E C T ?
Use a Down-Up component and/or add in a specific contact drill between games.

HOW C AN I MAKE SURE QUALIT Y AND/OR INTENSIT Y DOESN’T DROP

AS THE SESSION CONTINUES?
Decrease Pitch size, decrease the Work Periods and or Increase Rest Periods
with each game

IT’S PRESEASON OR A RECOVERY SESSION AND I WANT TO USE SSG’S – WHAT DO I USE?
Use a large Pitch, plenty of space and longer work blocks and long rest periods.
Allow the intensity to suit the required RPE and allow forward passes and encourage
kicking.

I H A V E S O M E P L AY E R S W H O I ’ D L I K E T O D E V E L O P T H E I R D E P T H P E R C E P T I O N ?
Use a Long pitch, which is narrower. Allow and encourage kicking.
Use an evasion game like Aussie Rules or allow forward over arm passing

LIMIT THE INJURY RISK?
Use a larger pitch. Keep numbers low.
Allow more running speed & space.
Limit deceleration.

I WANT TO INCREASE THE INTENSIT Y OVER A SEASON OR TRAINING BLOCK?

Decreasing the work duration from 3 to 1 minute gradually.
Change team sizes and move from 10 vs 10 to 3v3 or shorter sessions.

H O W C A N I I N C R E A S E T H E A N A E R O B I C L O A D I N G O F T H E P L AY E R S ?
Decrease the rest periods gradually

HOW CAN I ADD A DECISION-MAKING ELEMENT TO THE SESSION?

Keep the area the same but switch each game between playing lengthways and
playing widthways forcing them to adjust to different dimensions but same area.
