    Greek drama and lyric poetry flourished during the Golden Age of Athens in the 5th century BC under the ruling of Pericles. This period marked the high point of Greek literature with the three great tragic writers of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides dominating the theater. Lyric poetry also grew as a more individual artistic form of expression compared to the epic tradition which deeply influenced the people through ancient legends. Greek dramatic works reflected the peak of Athenian civilization but differed from modern plays through their use of long choral recitations between episodes.
