Stage Two

This month is all about sleep.

I want you to experience 6 sleep cycles per night (or 5 per night with a 90 minute power nap) as
well as keep tracking your calories and hitting your MAS number from last month.

So, in the next 30 days you will be doing:

1) Calorie tracking & hit your MAS number daily.


2) 6 sleep cycles per night (or 5 per night with a 90 minute power nap).

What’s so important about sleep?

Implementing correct sleeping strategies is ​vital​ to growing taller. If you are not getting enough
sleep (good sleep) which include full 90 minute sleep cycles, your ability to grow will be
impacted (and not in a good way!).

What does a sleep cycle look like?

A sleep cycle is brown down into four stages over the period of 90 minutes:

Stage 1: Non REM (stage one)


Stage 2: Non REM (stage two)
Stage 3: Non REM (stage three)
Stage 4: REM

You may have noticed that we have highlighted Non REM stage three - this is because this vital
stage is when bone and tissue growth occurs. This is necessary to the whole grow taller
process.

What is REM?

REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement Sleep.

It is also the stage where you are most likely to dream.

It is believed that the rapid eye movements relate to the internal visual images of the dreams
that occur during REM sleep.

Brain activity during REM sleep is distinguished by low-amplitude mixed-frequency brain waves,
which are similar to those experienced during the waking state. Theta waves, alpha waves and
high-frequency beta waves which you typically experience during high-level active concentration
and thinking show up as the “saw-tooth” brain wave pattern on an electroencephalogram (EEG).

The brain’s oxygen consumption (energy consumption) during REM is often higher than when
awake and working on a complex problem.

During this stage of sleep, breathing becomes more rapid and irregular than during non-REM
sleep, and the heart rate and blood pressure also increase to near waking levels.

What is non REM?

Non-REM sleep (NREM) which comprises of the first three stages is a state of dreamless sleep.
During NREM your brain waves are normally moderate, and your breathing and heart rate are

slow and regular. Along with this, your blood pressure is usually low, and your body keeps fairly
still.

During NREM when you get to Stage 3 NREM your body starts to repair itself and gears itself up
to the higher level of brain activity that takes place during REM.

How to plan your sleep, so you get enough

Planning your sleep is key to getting enough sleep. An average adult gets around 8 hours of
sleep per night - which because each sleep cycle is 90 minutes, means that they get around 5
sleep cycles a night.

As we are trying to grow taller we need a bit more than the average 5 cycles - so during this
program, you need to get at least six sleep cycles.

Now, not everyone is able (due to their lifestyle) to get the full 6 sleep cycles in a night - so, if
that is the case for you, it is perfectly okay to fit in one 90 minute power nap to bring yourself up
to the optimum sleep amount.

Look at it backwards

The easiest way to plan your sleep is to look at it backwards.

For instance if you wake up at 6am then you would subtract 90 mins (which would be one sleep
cycle) and would take you to 4.30am - you would then subtract another 90 mins which would be
another sleep cycle, which would then take you to 3am and another - to 1.30am and another - to
12.00 and another - to 10.30pm and that would be a total of 5 sleep cycles. To make that 6 -
you would need to be going to bed at 9pm.

So - bed at 9pm waking at 6am would be 6 full sleep cycles.

Now, as we said above, not everyone will be able to get 6 full sleep cycles in all in one go - so to
make up your missing sleep cycle you need to take it as a 90 min power nap.

Tips for getting better sleep

It is important to remember that when you get into bed, you are not likely to fall asleep straight
away. You are more likely to be lying there chilling out before you slowly drift to sleep. And even
if you think your body is not recovering while you are chilling out you are, so don’t worry if you
can’t sleep right away.

Below are some tips to help you get better sleep

● Go to bed a little early to give your body time to chill out


● Charge phones downstairs - smartphones are generally distracting to sleep, it can
become very tempting to check that tweet, Facebook post or text before you drift off.
● Buy an alarm so you can control when you wake up and make sure you are hitting your
sleep cycles
● Remember quality sleep is better than long sleep

So to recap:
You need to get 6 sleep cycles per night (or 5 per night with a 90 minute power nap).
