MMW Activity 6

The document contains the results of experiments measuring the length and weight of lizards and guinea pigs. It also analyzes data on the relationship between age gaps and length of relationships for couples. For the lizard experiment, the correlation coefficient calculated indicates a very strong positive relationship between length and weight. For the guinea pig experiment, the regression line developed found the slope to be 0.84, meaning weight increases 0.84 units for each 1 unit increase in length. The correlation for age gap vs relationship length was found to be very weak. Probability calculations were also performed for heights of students in a class normally distributed around 160cm.

ACTIVITY #6

Answer the following.

A. In a biology class, a group of students brought 10 lizards for their experiment.
They measured the weight and the length of the body of each lizard from the tail
to the nose. The findings were presented below.
Lizard Length in units (x) Weight in units (y)
1 5 6
2 4 3
3 3 1
4 7 5
5 2 2
6 6 4
7 5 6
8 8 7
9 9 8
10 8 6
Compute for the r and interpret the result.
Lizard Length (x) Width (y) xy x2 y2
1 5 6 30 25 36
2 4 3 12 16 9
3 3 1 3 9 1
4 7 5 35 49 25
5 2 2 4 4 4
6 6 4 24 36 16
7 5 6 30 25 36
8 8 7 56 64 49
9 9 8 72 81 64
10 8 6 48 64 36
N=10 ∑ x =57 ∑ y=48 ∑ x y=314 ∑ x 2=373 ∑ y2 =276
N ( xy ) −( x )( y)
r=
√¿ ¿ ¿
10 ( 314 )−(57)(48)
=
√¿ ¿ ¿
r = 0.86
∴ There exists a very strong positive (negative) relationship between the
length and width of the body of each lizard from the tail to the nose.

B. In a biology class, a group of students brought 10 guinea pigs for their experiment.
They measured the weight and the length of the body of guinea pig from the tail to
the nose. The findings were recorded below.

N=10 ∑ x =57 ∑ y=48 ∑ xy =314 ∑ x 2=373 ∑ y2 =276
1. compute the slope and the y-intercept of the regression line
Slope:
b = n ∑ xy−( ∑ x )¿ ¿
10 ( 314 )−(57)(48) 404
= =
10 ( 373 )−¿ ¿ 481
b = 0.84 – slope

y-intercept:
Mnx = 57/10 = 5.7 ; Mny = 48/10 = 4.8
a = Mny - bMnx = 4.8 – (0.84)(5.7)
a = 0.01 – y intercept
2. develop the regression model

The regression equation is ŷ = 0.01 + (0.84)x

3. interpret the slope and the y-intercept
Slope: If the length of the body of the guinea pig increases by 1m, we predict the weight
of the guinea pig will increase by approximately 0.84.
Y-Intercept: If the length of the body of the guinea pig is 0, then we predict the weight of
the guinea pig is 0.01.
4. predict the weight when x = 8.5 and x = 10
The regression equation is ŷ = 0.01 + (0.84)x
x=8.5 : ŷ = 0.01 + (0.84) (8.5) = 7.15 or 7 (answer)
x=10 : ŷ = 0.01 + (0.84) (10) = 8.41 or 8 (answer)
C. The researcher wants to know if the age gaps of partners affect the length of their
relationships. Is there a significant relationship between the age gap and the
length of relationships of partners? The collected data from 15 partners were
summarized below:

Partner Age Length of xy x2 y2

gap (x) relationship

1 1 5 5 1 25

2 7 6 42 49 36

3 2 7 14 4 49

4 4 10 40 16 100

5 3 25 75 9 625

6 3 30 90 9 900

7 10 22 220 100 484

8 6 4 24 36 16

9 4 3 12 16 9

10 12 10 120 144 100

11 30 6 180 900 36

12 22 12 264 484 144

13 15 10 150 225 100

14 3 5 15 9 25

15 9 8 72 81 64

N=15 ∑ x =131 ∑ y=163 ∑ x y=1323 ∑ x 2=2083 ∑ y2 =2713

N ( xy ) −( x )( y)
r=
√¿ ¿ ¿
15 ( 1323 )−(131)(163)
=
√¿ ¿ ¿
r = -0.11
∴ There exists a very weak positive (negative) relationship between the age
gap and the length of relationship of partners.

D. In a certain high school, the heights of the students are normally distributed with a
mean of 160 cm and a standard deviation of 10 cm.
a. Find the probability that a randomly selected student will be less than 158
cm tall.
Convert 158 to z-score:
x−x̄ 158−160
z= = =−0.20
s 10
P (x<158) = P (z<-0.20)
= 0.4207

b. Find the probability that a randomly selected student will be taller than 164
cm.
Convert 164 to z-score:
x−x̄ 164−160
z= = =0. 4 0
s 10
P (x>164) = P (z>0.40) = 1 – P (z>0.40) = 1 – 0.6554 = 0.3446

c. Find the probability that the height of a randomly selected student will be
between 156 cm and 165 cm.
Convert 156 and 165 to z-score:
x−x̄ 156−160 x−x̄ 165−160
z= = =−0.40 ; z = = =0.50
s 10 s 10
P (156 < x < 165) = P (z < 0.50) – P (z < -0.40) = 0.6915 – 0.3446 = 0.3469
