L 15 LIGHT

III. ANSWER THE FOLLWING:

1. Define reflection.
Ans: The bouncing back of light from the surface of a polished object like a mirror is
known as reflection of light.
Reflection can be regular and form an image or irregular / diffused in which case it does
not form an image.

2. What is a mirror? What are the types of mirror?

Ans: Any smooth, polished surface that can reflect light is known as a mirror. A mirror is
made up of a glass with silver paint on one side.
Plane and spherical mirrors are the two type of mirrors.

3. Explain the type of spherical mirrors.

Ans: Spherical mirrors are curved mirrors which are part of a sphere.
Spherical mirrors are of 2 types.
In concave mirrors the reflecting surface is curved inwards. ( The eating part of the
spoon )
In convex mirrors the reflecting surface is curved outwards. ( The outer part of the
spoon )

4. Explain the following terms related to image.

i. Real and Virtual
ii. Erect and Inverted
iii. Enlarged and Diminished
Ans i. Real images can be obtained on a screen but Virtual images cannot be obtained on a
screen.
ii. Image which is upright is called an erect image. An image which is upside down is called an
inverted image.
iii.An image which is bigger than the object is an enlarged image. Image which is smaller than
the object is a diminished image.
5. Describe the image formed by a plane mirror
❖ The image is virtual and erect.
❖ It is the same size as that of the object.
❖ The image is formed at the same distance from the mirror as the object from the
mirror.
❖ The image shows lateral inversion. Left side appears as right and the right side
appears as left.
6. How is the image formed by a concave mirror?
Ans: A concave mirror forms real and inverted images most of the time. The size of the image
keeps increasing when the object keeps nearing the mirror.

However when kept very near the mirror it forms a virtual and enlarged image.
7. What are the uses of a concave mirror?
➢ Dentist, eye doctors and ENT doctors use these mirrors for examination.
➢ It is used as reflectors in vehicle headlight and torches.
➢ It is used as make-up and shaving mirrors.
➢ It is used as reflectors in solar cookers.

8. What are the qualities of an image formed by a convex mirror and how it is useful?

Ans: Image formed by a convex mirror is always diminished, virtual and erect. These mirrors
are useful as rear view mirrors in vehicles and as security mirrors.
9. Why is convex lens called a converging lens while a concave lens is called a diverging
lens?
Ans: A convex lens converges the light falling on it so it is called a converging lens.

A concave lens diverges the light that passes through it in various directions hence it is called a
diverging lens.
10. Why the word “ AMBULANCE “ is written inverted in a van?
Ans: When viewed in the side view mirror the laterally inverted “ AMBULANCE” appears upright
alerting the drivers about the presence of an ambulance behind.

IV. DETAIL ANSWERS:

1. How will you prove that the white light consists of seven colours?
❖ Take a circular cardboard of 10 cm diameter.
❖ Divide the cardboard into seven segments.
❖ Paint the segments with rainbow colours. ( VIBGYOR )
❖ Make a hole at the centre of the cardboard and fix an empty refill there.
❖ Rotate the cardboard at high speed.
❖ The rainbow coloured cardboard also called Newton’s disc appears white.
❖ This proves that white light is made up of seven colours.
