I. RATIONALE:
The Department of Education (DepEd) supports Every Child a Reader Program, which
aims to make every Filipino child a reader and a writer at his/her grade level. Thus, the
DepEd through the Bureau of Learning Division (BLD-TLD) continue to administer the
Revised Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) assessment to learners in public
elementary schools nationwide.
One of its objective is to use the Phil-IRI data to serve as one of the basis in planning
redesigning the reading instruction of the teachers and all the school’s reading programs or
activities to improve the overall school’s reading performance.
Punong Grande National High School upholds the objectives of BLD-TLD in order
to attain the objectives of the country’s Education for all. Based on the reading passages and
findings of the Phil-IRI which was conducted in June 2022 to all Grade 7 students, it showed
that some of the students had poor comprehension skills in reading and there are those
reading levels were frustration.
II. OBJECTIVES:
IV. ACTIVITIES
The Filipino and English teachers served as the reading coordinators who conducted
remedial reading to those identified students every grading period. The students brought the
reading difficulties based on the Phil-Iri Pretest.
The reading coordinators distributed reading materials to the students every grading
period. The students brought the reading materials to be read at home with their parents.
After reading the comprehension questions were answered by the students and parents by
affixing the signature of the parents on the reading materials the students gave back the
reading materias to the reading coordinators for recording.
To assess the reading levels of the students, the Phil-IRI Post Test was
conducted. The result of the pretest and post test is shown in the table below.
There were 72 students who have been part of the Phil-IRI Assessment and their
level of Comprehension was divided into three groups; Independent, Instructional and
Frustration. From the Pre Test result it was identified that there were 46 Independent
readers, 16 Instructional readers 1 Frustration readers and 9 Non-readers.
The Post Test was then conducted after the remedial reading activities and the result
gradually improved. The post test result shows that there were 56 Independent readers, 6
Instructional readers 4 Frustration readers and 6 Non-readers, which means that there is an
increase number of Independent readers and decrease number of Instructional readers, On
the other hand, the number of Frustration readers increases, and number of Non-readers
decreases, from the toal population of Grade 7 students who are part of the Phil-IRI
assessment.
