I’ve been teaching English for more than 20 years and nearly every student
says that their biggest problem is speaking. By now, you probably know the
English tenses and had lots of practice at written grammar exercises, but yet,
you stutter in your speaking.

Most English lessons at school focus on grammar, reading and vocabulary. Still,
we often fall short on listening and speaking practices, especially during and
after the pandemic. This means that when you speak English now, you feel
embarrassed or worried about making mistakes and being laughed by the
listener. Most of the time, it is difficult to find the words you need, even for
simple conversations.

Seriously, can we “learn” speaking?

Of course! We need to prepare our students with the real SPM questions
format and build their confidence. This module is specially designed with real
examination format and with countless hours of refinement, it is definitely a
“MUST HAVE” module as a student’s reference book or as a teacher resource
book. Since it is not always easy to become confident in speaking, this book
provides all the necessary materials for students to build your confidence.

I hope that this innovative module will be of great use to improve your
speaking grades In your SPM.

With zillion wishes,

Marks will be assessed according to band levels from Band to under Grammar,

by giving a mark for Overall Spoken Performance. Candidates need to focus on
all parts. There is no particular mark allocation for each part as far as the
candidate’s concern. Besides, there will be a discussion between the interlocutor
and the assessor.

. How many candidates are taking the Speaking Test in every session?

Two candidates, each sitting side by side.

. How many teachers or invigilators are there?

There will be teachers and they are called interlocutor (INT) and assessor (ASR).

. What is the role of an interlocutor (INT)?

He or she is supposed to take charge and control of the test.

. What is the role of an assessor (ASR)?

To assist in evaluating and ensuring the test process is in a smooth manner

during transitions.

. Who is the interlocutor (INT)?

The interlocutor (INT) is a teacher who teaches in the candidate’s school.

. Who is the assessor (ASR)?

The assessor is a teacher from a nearby school appointed.

. How is the sitting arrangement?

The interlocutor (INT) will sit in front of the two candidates. The assessor (ASR) will
sit to one side near enough to observe and listen. The assessor (ASR) will sit near
enough to take the marksheets from the interlocutor without moving their place
during the assessment.

. How can the Speaking Test be ensured to be in a fair manner?

The interlocutor (INT) is supposed to follow strictly to the instructions. No

unscripted comments is allowed as research has shown that interlocutor who shows
bias treatment by giving comments or help indirectly creates an unfair test and
have a negative impact on a candidate’s performance.

. Is there an advantage to the candidates who take the Speaking Test in the later stage?

Generally, a lot of candidates might think so as they might get tips from the earlier
candidates. However, the main interaction comes from Part of the Speaking Test
where candidates lead the task rather than the interlocutor. It is evaluated based on
genuine peer-to-peer interaction. Hence, I would not totally agree that candidates
will get an upper hand if they take the test later. If a candidate does not practise or
depend on memorised text, the interlocutor would have noticed and a lower band
will be given.

. Is there only be ONE set of material for the whole process of the Speaking Test?
Name : Siti Raihan Shamsudin
School : Petaling Jaya, Selangor
There will be different sets. Interlocutor will use the sets randomly to provide test
security among the candidates.

9. What are the criteria used to assess the candidate?

Three main areas : grammar, vocabulary and communicative competence.

. Will the interlocutor assist the candidate if candidate pauses too long?

Interlocutor is briefed to provide support if necessary.

. What is the support(s) that may be given?

The interlocutor can repeat the question if the candidate is not clear or being asked
upon. The interlocutor can assist by pointing to a task on the booklet or used the
scripted back-up prompts to help.

. What happens if a candidate talks too much or too long?

The interlocutor will provide a sign by hovering his/her hands or a firm “Thank
you” to interrupt.

. Can a candidate bring a pencil or pen to jot down notes?

No. Not permitted.

. Can the interlocutor make notes during the Speaking Test ?

No, Not permitted as well because there might be parts of candidate performance
that the interlocutor might miss, making the test unfair.

. I used to get overly nervous at the beginning. What should I do?

Part of the Speaking Test is to help candidates to feel at ease. Stay calm and
learn the sample answers provided in this module.

. Why sometimes, the interlocutor asks more questions in Part , Phase ?

The interlocutor is to set the atmosphere at ease and provide more time for
candidates to settle down. If one question is asked and candidate only answers in a
word or two, the interlocutor will try asking different questions using the back up
prompts. Sometimes, a hand gesture or nod will be signalled to encourage the
candidate to continue speaking.

How Can You Improve You Speaking Confidence?

TIP :
Concentrate on communicating your idea rather than worrying about your
grammar usage. There is no right or wrong answer.

Tip :
If you are speaking to an interlocutor during the exam, remember that they
rarely correct your grammar. They are there to access your confidence level
too. Take a deep breath and stay cool! It is better to speak up than to keep
quiet.

Tip :
Use phrases instead of trying to remember certain words. Remember phrases
which are easy to remember such as “Good morning, teacher”, “I am fine”, “I
don’t get you, teacher”, “I will try my best” e.t.c. can help you to start a
conversation. They are easy to get right and you can start gaining confidence!
If you are nervous, use only standard phrases until you are comfortable
enough to use some more challenging sentences.

Tip :
The golden rule is always “Practice makes perfect”! Use the new phrases and
vocabulary every day and practise them with as many friends as you can.

Tip :
Maintain eye contact with the interlocutor. Use gesture to elaborate your
points if possible. Remember, it is perfectly fine if you mess up things - just
keep going!

Tip :
Bear in mind that the interlocutor is there to help you. He or she is trying to
find ways to assist you with prompts, encourage you to speak and identify your
points to reward you. Therefore, just speak with your heart.

Answering Tips and Tricks For Each Part

Part
 Don’t be nervous. You have to behave in your confident manner.
 Don’t admit that your English is not good. This might create a negative impression.
 This is the easiest part. Don’t answer in “One-word sentence”.
 You should answer in a complete sentence. Be careful with grammar.
 Bear in mind that “lying” is completely acceptable but the lies must be reasonable
(believable).
 Interlocutor knows that most candidates will be asked about daily routine and the
interlocutor expect particularly good responses from you. The questions are relatively
simple and mainly personal and factual.
 Candidate should not spend too much time answering the “daily routine” question. This
could indicate to the interlocutor that you have prepared very well or you have actually
memorise your scripts!

Part
 You must answer the topic given in the cue card. There are four suggestions for what to
talk about. You should use all of them.

 Student should speak around minutes on the topic given. Remember, quality is more
important than quantity! Try to speak confidently and with full sentences.

 When you have finished speaking, simply make eye contact with the interlocutor. As a
gesture, you may say “ That’s all” or “Thank you”.

Part
 This part is more demanding. Always remember that there are five main categories of
questions in this part. You need to analyse the bubble illustration, compare and contrast,
describe, narrate and suggest by providing your own opinion.

 Analyse the bubble illustration

 Compare and contrast
 Describe with examples
 Narrate your own experience
 Suggest with your own opinion.

Holiday : SUGGESTED ANSWER

I am going to share a holiday trip that I recently had.

To begin with, my parents decided to bring me over to one of the tourist spots
in Malaysia - Melaka as they know that I am a history enthusiast! Frankly
speaking, I was so excited as we went to a couple of places including Jonker
Street, A Famosa and Christ Church Melaka. Personally, I loved this trip
incredibly. One thing that amazed me is that the different building structures
in this city recorded the journey on how our ancestors fought for
independence!

To be fair, is it important to get a holiday? Undoubtedly, I reckon that it’s

essential to get a break once in a while as it would help you to ease your mind
while you are recharging your battery. Apart from that, taking a holiday at
various spots will be fabulous since it would be an eye-opening experience
that you can never learn from the textbooks.

Let's chat about my next-door neighbour.

Since I was seven years old, Peter has lived next door. He is presently a

think he'll make a competent attorney.

Having a neighbour is beneficial since they can assist you in case of an

emergency. In addition, they could be the first to intervene to protect you in
any situation.

Movie : SUGGESTED ANSWER

I am going to share a night about watching movies with my family.

The last movie that I watched with my family was “The Boy 3”. We watched
this movie on Netflix at home on a Saturday night. We usually have Saturday
as a family day. I love this concept. Anyway, this is a horror movie and it
talked about how the boy killed lots of people in order to get his sister’s
attention and love. There were a few scenes that were quite bloody, but in the
end, I think this movie made me reflect on if it is worthy to hurt many people
just to get someone’s love while being so possessive. I would say that this
movie is pretty cool and everyone should watch it.

Frankly speaking, I reckon that it is essential to spend time with family

because it will not only help us to relax and de-stress but also increase the
bonds between the family members.

Personal belonging : SUGGESTED ANSWER

I'm going to share something with you that I always have to have.

Frankly, I believe it would be my phone, which my folks gave me for my

to make a call or take a picture of some delicious dish or a nice location. In all
honesty, I wouldn't give it to anyone since it contains too many significant
items.

Because they are things I own and should be treated responsibly, I believe it is
necessary to take care of my personal property.

The instructor is Mr. Subash. He teaches me the subject - English. This

instructor had a significant influence on me since he was one of the first
teachers I had who knew how to make learning engaging and entertaining. He
was quite entertaining and included practical lessons and jokes into his
classes.

I believe it is critical to have a good instructor since it may greatly affect how
much you can learn in a single lesson. It's crucial to feel like you are learning
and having fun in class, and to receive fair and transparent feedback on your
performance.

Fruit : SUGGESTED ANSWER

I am going to share with you a fruit I like.

I love apples and they can be found from trees. They are a popular fruit with
many varieties and can be found in nearly all grocery stores. The taste can
vary quite a bit depending on the kind of apple, from sour to sweet. I like
McIntosh apples as they tend to be sweet and juicy. I like this fruit because it
is a great healthy snack. They can be kept for a long time in the fridge and are
easy to bring with you.

It is important to eat fruit as not only is it usually pretty tasty but also
contains a lot of important vitamins and nutrients. Apples make for a great
healthy snack too instead of something like chips.

Part Candidate Booklet B

Ideal school : SUGGESTED ANSWER

I would love to talk about what an ideal school I would like to have.

I would love my ideal school to be less strict. My current school has many
rules being relaxed to create a better environment to study. Among the things
we can do are we can eat in the class at any time we want, we can go to the
toilet once every period and the recess time is longer by minutes. However,
there are the don’ts that I dislike. School begins 5 minutes earlier than other
schools, we have to wear uniforms even on Saturdays and we cannot visit the
library during break time.

In my view, attending a good school is crucial since it will help everyone

develop excellent behaviour. Apart from that, I certainly agree that we will
have a better study environment if we get to be in a good school.

I would love to share my two cents on the dream job that I would love to have.

I want to work as a teacher. I have to finish college before I can apply for this

and monitoring their learning. After seeing my professors, I believe that the
hardest part of the work is to maintain patience and refrain from
reprimanding the kids.

I believe that having a dream job is crucial since you need to be content with
your work in order to work for a long time. In addition, working at your ideal

Something You Lost : SUGGESTED ANSWER

Here comes a sad story about something I lost lately.

When I was nine years old, my grandma gave me a watch, which I

unfortunately lost. Well, a few weeks ago, I visited a mall. I was swinging my
hands and moving about. The watch slipped without my knowledge, and I
didn't even notice it till I got home. I needed the watch since it was something
my grandma gave me before she passed away.

Being responsible for your own possessions requires you to take care of your
personal belongings, in my opinion. Additionally, in my opinion, it is a way to
demonstrate your affection for your possessions and your commitment to
taking good care of them.

Name : Siti Raihan Shamsudin
School : Petaling Jaya, Selangor
SUGGESTED ANSWERS
Candidate A : From the illustration, there are 3 obvious advantages if we have
[Advance] home-cooked meals prepared by our parents. First and foremost,
there is less wastage. I am extremely disappointed when I see
people wasting food during buffet. Since the customers pay the
high price on a buffet, they take as much as possible and do not
care whether they can finish the food or not. Besides,
home-cooked meals are definitely more economical. With a mere
RM20, we can cook for a family of three but in view of the current
economic situation, RM20 is just enough for a person on one meal.
On the healthy aspect, when we cook ourselves, the ingredients
we use are healthier and cleaner. My mother uses olive oil to cook.
Hence, it is better for our health and less cholesterol.

Interlocutor : What do you think [candidate name]? What about this [pointing to option]?

Candidate B : For me, in particular, I prefer to have home-cooked meals because

[Advance] we can cultivate better relationship among our family members.
The merry atmosphere from cooking and eating them together on
a round table is indeed heart-warming for all. My little brother is
allergy to nuts and by cooking ourselves, we know what to avoid.
My brother was nearly sent to the hospital when he developed red
bumps on the skin and vomiting after eating outside food last
year. Talking about hygiene, no doubt that home-cooked meal is
definitely more hygiene. Certain places have vermin which can be
dangerous to health.

[vermin : rats, mice, cockroaches]

Part 2 : The MOST significant point

Interlocutor Thank you. Now, you have about a minute to decide together which is the best
reason to have home-cooked meal.

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate A After listening to [candidate B], I have to agree with him/her that
home-cooked food is more hygienic. Nothing is more important
than health because “Health is wealth”. We are what we eat. With
cleaner and hygienic food, we can be assured of our good health
condition at all times.

FOR ADVANCED STUDENTS

Candidate A : In my opinion, there are a few causes to global food crisis. One of the causes
[Advance] is the war in Ukraine. The war has brought about sufferings to humans and
the ripple effect has affected significantly to food supply and production.
Several countries go into poverty because of the war. I suggest that all the
countries to come together and put pressure onto Russia to stop the war
immediately.

Candidate B : I agree with your opinion but I have something else to add. For me, the
[Advance] effects of the pandemic and the rising cost of living now are the main
contributors to global food crisis. Prices of essential food in Sri Lanka and
many other developing countries are rising to record high. The government
should help out the people who find them hard to survive the current
situation.

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate A : From the illustration, there are 3 obvious reasons why people
[Advance] travel. First and foremost, it can build confidence. When we go
travelling, we go out from our comfort zone and try new things.
We will be more open to experience adventures in life, like trying
bungee jumping, kayaking down a river or hiking up a hill.
Besides, visiting new places gives us a whole new experience and
gain knowledge. We understand the history, the people and enjoy
the beauty of the new place. We might pick up a new language
during our holidays too. For example, I learn a few Japanese words
when I traveled to Japan and able to speak a few sentences of
Korean when I had a student exchange program to Korea for two
months when I was in Form 3.

Interlocutor : What do you think [candidate name]? What about this [pointing to option]?

Candidate B : For me, in particular, I think people travel because we can be

[Advance] independent in many ways. Traveling teaches us to organize and
make important decisions, which are imperative in our daily life.
Then, when we explore new cultures in a new place, we learn to
understand ourselves better and how people behave differently.
This is a good lesson on social studies, which we seldom learn
from our books. And yes! Relaxation is the key why people travel.
We escape for our hustle and bustle daily life to go to beaches, hike
up mountains and try other places food to satiate our taste
buds…all these are a great form of relaxation that can rejuvenate
our energy for better days later on.

Part 2 : The MOST significant point

Interlocutor Thank you. Now, you have about a minute to decide together which is the best
reason why do people travel?

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate A After listening to [candidate B], I have to agree with him/her that
people travel mainly because of relaxation. Nowadays, many
people has mental stress and problems. We definitely need a break
every now and then to release ourselves so that we can move
forward with confidence. Nothing is more important than mental
health these days because “Health is wealth”.
Name : Siti Raihan Shamsudin

Candidate B Yes, you are perfectly right. When we were lockdown and bogged
down with all the online classes, it is indeed important to break
free and find some form of relaxation elsewhere. My parents are
talking about not one, but two trips of holidays after my SPM. We
plan to go to Pulau Tioman locally and another trip to Singapore.
Universal Studio in Sentosa Island is definitely my first choice.

Select any of the following prompts as appropriate :

 What do you think?

 Do you agree?
 How about you?

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate A : It is indeed a very challenging question but I will try my best to answer it. If
[Advance] we go travelling, for example to Singapore, we can promote our country by
wearing “Visit Malaysia” shirt and be proud of being a Malaysian. We can
share to Singaporeans about Malaysia’s culture and food, by telling them
where to visit and what food to try. I think they are interested to get some
tips on where and what to do when they are in Malaysia as Malaysia is just
across the Tebrau Straits.

Candidate B : That’s a brilliant idea and I have something else to add. I would promote
[Advance] Malaysia in a more patriotic way. Whenever I have the chance, I will talk
good about my country, from politics to economy. Of course, the beauty of
Malaysia lies in the people, the harmony, the food and historical places. I will
promote to them whatever they are interested to know about Malaysia.

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate A : From the illustration, there are main things that interest
[Advance] teenagers. First and foremost, it is about games. You can see many
teenagers playing games on their mobile phones and spend endless
hours on them. I personally play some games as well but I always
limit myself to hour every day. Secondly, fashion does attract
teenagers a lot. When they go out, they always wear their best
clothes to make sure that their appearance is good. Graphic tees,
denim, baggy pants, hoodies, and sweatshirts are the most current
girl’s outfit. These are functional, loose, and comfortable clothes
for maximum freedom. Another thing that interest teenagers is
technology. I would say teenagers are on ear-phones, carrying the
latest mobile phones and obsessed with gaming computers are the
current trend of teenagers.

Interlocutor : What do you think [candidate name]? What about this [pointing to option]?

Candidate B : For me, in particular, I think the things that interest teenagers are
[Advance] music and movies as these are entertainment. Nowadays, a lot of
teenagers are hedonistic, meaning, they want to have pleasure,
easy and enjoy life. I would say out of teenagers like to listen
to music and watching movies. Besides, teenagers are very
sociable on social media platforms. Social media has become a
platform for them to express their feelings and basically, every
teenager has at least three social media platforms which they are
active in.

Part : The MOST significant point

Interlocutor Thank you. Now, you have about a minute to decide together which is the best

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate A After listening to [candidate B], I have to agree with him/her that
social media is the things that interest teenagers the most. I
personally are obsessed with them as every day, when I go back
home, the first thing I will do is to check my phone on all social
media platforms. I just do not want to be left out as there are so
many information and updates to check on.

Name : Siti Raihan Shamsudin

School : Petaling Jaya, Selangor
Candidate B Yes, you are perfectly right. But then, I have to choose games as
the things that interest teenagers because games are so addictive
that most teenagers spend endless hours on them. Games have, in
fact, weakened the relationship of family ties. I have seen so many
children ignoring their parents when they are on games. That
shows clearly on how obsessed teenagers are on games.

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate A : It is indeed a very challenging question but I will try my best to answer it. Let
[Advance] me get the question right. To how common interest with friends influence us?
Okay. Having common interest such as gaming, socializing and having a same
hobby do influence us a lot. When we talk, discuss and respond to our friends
over time, we develop a strong influence between us and keep on doing what
we felt good. Therefore, it does influence our identity.

Candidate B : You are absolutely right. For example, I have a friend that changes the way I
[Advance] feel. When I was down, he was always in touch with me on social media and
we spend hours chatting our issues and share the same interests. I felt I am
happy with him. Now, I am going out with him to the library to study as

Candidate A&B (approximately minutes)

Name : Siti Raihan Shamsudin

School : Petaling Jaya, Selangor
SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate From the illustration, I believe that keeping secrets, showing respect
and
A spending time together are imperative factors to strong
friendships relationship. When a secret is being told to a friend,
never
: let the cat out of the bag! That will tarnish our ties. We need to
respect each other by showing empathy to differences. For example,
[Advance] never be blunt on telling your friends about their look, their behavior
or their weaknesses. Instead, spend more time together and share
happiness. You are a friend, not an enemy. Get together and share the
same common interest like playing games and doing a hobby. These
ways will, for sure, keep friendships strong.

Interlocutor : What do you think [candidate name]? What about this [pointing to option]?

Candidate For me, in particular, I have to go with the factors on being open to
criticism,
B supportive and learning to forgive as the main contributors
to keep friendships strong. Life is full of criticisms and we have to be
open
: to them. At times, your friends are being honest and might utter
some comments which we do not like. However, those things could be
[Advance] true and we just have to accept the fact and don’t blame them on
others, especially our friends. Being supportive is also very
important. Sometimes, we just have to sit and listen to them, lending
our ears. On learning to forgive, I personally have an unforgettable
experience on this. There was once that I had a huge argument and
nothing could mend things until both of us learn to forgive each
other. Sometimes, saying “sorry” is necessary to maintain the
friendships we have for years.

Part 2 : The MOST significant point

Interlocutor Thank you. Now, you have about a minute to decide together which is the
best way to keep friendship strong.

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate A After listening to [candidate B], I have to agree with him/her that be
supportive is the best factor. We should help our friends out without
them having to ask. Show our gratitude by responding in kind
gesture. Like the wise people say, “Friendship is like money, easier

Select any of the following prompts as appropriate :

 What do you think?

 Do you agree?
 How about you?

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate A : It is indeed a very challenging question but I will try my best to answer it.
[Advance] In this technological world, with all the social media platforms, we
definitely have virtual friends whom we don’t really know them in person.
Some are fine but with the news of scams popping out from the newspaper
daily, we definitely have to be caution about trusting virtual friends totally.
This is true when it comes to the proverb “Precaution is better than cure”.

Candidate B : You are absolutely right. Talking about scam, one of my friends is a prey to
[Advance] love scam. She fell in love with someone who chatted with her online and
she was cheated close to RM30,000 by persuading her to invest on an
investment platform. To me, I have stayed inactive to Facebook, Instagram
and others. It is better to keep our feet on the ground. I rather spend my

teenagers enjoy outdoor activities is to relieve stress. In this
technological era, many teenagers are too obsessed with their
electronic gadgets and many could become stressed out when
cyberbullying strikes. They should put down their gadgets and
enjoy the nature, go out and have a game or a movie outside. That
could seriously shrug off lots of stress from the shoulder.

Candidate B Yes, you are perfectly right. Every time after school, I can’t wait
to go home and finish my homework. That is because I will make
a point to meet up with my friends for a game of badminton at the
park. After the game, I will be so relief and can concentrate better
in my studies at night.

this. How do the technological developments play a role in the way people
spend their leisure time?

Select any of the following prompts as appropriate :

 What do you think?

 Do you agree?
 How about you?

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate In my opinion, technology has added more options to entertainment and
A: spending leisure time for all walks of life. For example, children can play
[Advance] online games at home in case they can’t meet up for a football game. For
adults and elderly people, social networks such as Facebook and Instagram
has kept them busy updating status and sharing photos. This has changed
massively how people spend their leisure time in this era.

Candidate I agree with your opinion but I have something else to add. For me, the
B: effects of technological development has indeed changed how people spend
[Advance] their leisure time but it is not for the better in the long run. People get lazier
and children are spending most of their time on games. I think the
government should do something to limit the use of internet and technology
for those who are below years old.

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate From the illustration, there are 3 obvious ways to encourage
A
pupils to use the school library. Firstly, the school can implement a
reward system to reward those who frequent the library. Pupils
:
will be given a recognition certificate for completing a number of
[Advance] hours per month in the library and extra merit marks for the
exam. Besides, the library school be equipped with more academic
and interesting novels to read. On the part of facilities, the library
should have better lighting and sound-proof walls.

Interlocutor What do you think [candidate name]? What about this [pointing to option]?
:

Candidate For me, I am more particular on the opening hours. The school
B
library should be opened on Saturdays because after our
co-curricular activities, we can stay back and study in the school.
:
Furthermore, the place should be conducive. There were many
[Advance] areas with water leaking from the roof and if such situation
happens, the authorities should immediately repair them.
Yes..about the monthly competitions, we should follow what SMK
Titi Teras is doing. They have monthly writing competitions which
reward students to borrow books for a longer period of time.

Part 2 : The MOST significant point

Interlocutor Thank you. Now, you have about a minute to decide together which is the best
way to encourage pupils to use the school library.

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate A After listening to [candidate B], I have to agree with him/her that
a conducive library will attract pupils the most. For me, a
conducive library has to be quiet and calming. As soon as I step
into it, they environment must have an inviting setting to
encourage pupils to read or study. The book arrangement must be
neat, books must be within reach from the study area and the
temperature must be right, not too hot or cold.

Candidate B Yes, you are perfectly right. Besides, the librarian also plays an
important role to ensure that the environment is conducive. If I
can make a suggestion here, I hope that there will be a desk lamp

on every table and a water dispenser for pupils to refill their water
tumblers. That will make a library perfect.

Select any of the following prompts as appropriate :

 What do you think?

 Do you agree?
 How about you?

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Candidate In my opinion, internet has indeed influence people’s reading habit. With the
A: fast changing world, internet has led people to spend more time reading short
[Advance] articles but no more on thick books. It break the habit of pupils of picking up a
book to read or go to the library, like the old days.

Candidate I agree with your opinion but I have something else to add. For me, even
B: though you sounded negative, I think the internet is inevitable and we have to
[Advance] adapt to it. People will still read thick books, if they are available in PDFs. For
me, the internet is not stopping me from visiting the library because I go to

ANIMALS

Describe a wild animal.

You should say:

 where the animal lives
 what it looks like
 how it behaves
 is this animal special? (Why/ Why not)?

SUGGESTED ANSWER
The panda is something I'd like to talk about. This is a well-known
animal from China. It is quite large – perhaps a similar size to a
person when fully grown. It has black and white fur that makes it
stand out, and it is the symbol of the World Wildlife Fund, an
international group that works to protect wild animals. I don't know
how many pandas there are in the world, but it can't be many. They
only eat certain kinds of bamboo, which is one of the main reasons
they are in danger of going extinct. The Chinese government has
long had a protection scheme for pandas, but it has had limited
success because the pandas are notorious for not breeding in
captivity. Some pandas are sent to other countries so they can
become big draws in zoos all over the world.

ANIMALS

Describe a domesticated animal.

You should say:

 what the animal looks like
 whether it is common in your country
 what it is used for
 you like or dislike this animal? (Why/Why not?)

SUGGESTED ANSWER
I would like to talk about the cat. Since the cat is so independent,
even when it is kept as a pet, I'm not sure if it is a domesticated
animal. I consider cat as a domesticated animal since I have 2 cats at
home. Cats are usually quite small. They have four legs and a tail,
and they can be black, brown, white, or a mix of the three. Some cat
breeds have physical traits that set them apart. For example, the
Manx cat doesn't have a tail. Cats eat meat, and people have used
them to catch mice and rats. In Malaysia, there are a lot of stray
cats. Some people find them annoying, especially when they rub
their body against your leg at restaurants, but I seriously don’t
mind!

 whether you often talk about this with others
 you remember this in particular? (Why/Why not?)

SUGGESTED ANSWER
The first time I went to the beach is a happy memory from my
childhood that I'd like to talk about. My parents and grandparents
took me there. I was amazed by how big the sea was, even though I
could only see a small part of it. We went to a great part of the coast
that had cliffs in one place and sandy beaches on another. I
remember wading out into the sea and almost getting swept away
by the waves. We spent a long time on the beach building
sandcastles and had a wonderful picnic there. I can still remember
the cool breeze and the beautiful horizon. My grandfather took me
nearby to have ice cream as a treat. Ever since my grandparents
past away two years ago, I start to treasure this happy memory even
more.

Describe an electronic item you own.

You should say:

 what it looks like
 what you use it for
 how you got it
 will you buy this item again? (Why/Why not?)

SUGGESTED ANSWER
I'd like to talk about my smartphone. It's not the most recent model
because I bought it last year, but it has a lot of useful features. The
best thing about it, is that it has a great camera. I love taking
pictures, but I don't like bringing my camera gear with me
everywhere I go. A good camera on a smartphone is very useful. I
can, of course, do all the usual things with it, like sending text
messages, calling people, saving their phone numbers, and setting
alarms. There are so many smartphones in the market now that it
took me a while to decide. I would probably buy this item again with
the same brand if the product is good.

 what the building was like
 you felt sad when you first went to school? (Why/Why not?)

SUGGESTED ANSWER
I would like to talk about my primary school. It was pretty big, like
most primary schools in my country's cities. It had a few buildings
in the shape of a rough square, and in the middle, there were places
to play sports outside. The buildings were different heights and
sizes. The buildings with classrooms were six storeys tall, but the
library was only two. There was a football field with a running track
around it as part of the sports facilities. There were also places to
play tennis and basketball. When I first went to that school, I was
both excited and nervous. After a while, I began to love it so much!

 how much it costs to use
 you prefer this form of communication? (Why/Why not?)

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Messaging is my favourite way to talk to people. I use it both for
school and for my own needs. I use it almost every day, and I usually
check my messages twice a day, in the morning and in the late
afternoon. Once you have a computer or a mobile gadget and
connect to the Internet, everything is ready and set to go. A local
Internet service provider gave me an annual plan for a very
reasonable price. I like this way of talking to people because, unlike
phone calls or writing letters, it doesn't bother me much. It's simple
to use, and it's easy to attach files and pictures to messages.

SUGGESTED ANSWER
In my opinion, people should recycle more. My country is
recycling a lot, but there are many things that could be recycled that
aren't. We need more places where people can drop off their trash
and a lot more recycling plants to be built as soon as possible. These
might be expensive to build, but they could make money by selling
paper, metals, plastic, glass and other things. With all this recycling
effort, our country wouldn't have to buy as many raw materials
from other countries.

Describe a restaurant you have been to.

You should say:

 where it is/was
 what food they serve
 what the service is like
 is the restaurant decorated nicely? (Why/Why not?)

SUGGESTED ANSWER
The restaurant I'm about to talk about is close to where I live. It's
called "Selera," and as you might guess, it serves Malay food. It has
a lot of different curries, including a great lamb curry, which is my
favourite. The restaurant is about average size, with about a dozen
tables that can seat between fifty and sixty people. There are
pictures of famous places in Malaysia, like the National Mosque, on
the walls. Most of the waiters and waitresses are young Malay men
and women. Their uniform is just black and white. Service is
excellent. I like that the wait staff is ready to help if you need
something, but doesn't always stand next to the table. Evenings, the
lights are turned down low so that each table feels like it has its own
space.

 who you do it with
 is your feeling good during and after exercise? (Why/Why not?)

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Riding on my mountain bike is my favourite way to get in shape. I
like this kind of exercise because I can do it whenever I want. I
usually ride my bike for at least 30 minutes, but I often go longer. I
like to cycle with my friends on the slope of the hill in the mornings
or evenings. It helps me forget about the exercise, so I don't usually
feel tired until it’s time to go back. It is a good work out. After the
exercise, I feel fresh and energetic. I bought the mountain bike
about three years ago, and I think it was a great purchase. I would
tell anyone to do it.

SUGGESTED ANSWER
I'd like to tell you about my friend, Laila. She is a wonderful girl
who is both pretty and smart. She is about average height and thin,
but she wears clothes that don't show off her shape. She has dark
eyes and long, dark hair.
Her face is oval, her eyes are big and brown, and she has a beautiful
smile. She gets a lot of attention from boys, but she prefers to hang
out with her girl friends. We met at school. We were both in the
same class, and we got along right away. Together, we do a lot of
things. We go shopping together a lot, but neither of us has much
money, so we just look around and don't spend much. She wants to

because he was not familiar with the school. We both have the same
teacher, and our teacher, Mr. Leong suggested that I could help the
student. My help saved her a lot of time and she could progress well

You should say:

 what rooms it would have
 where it would be
 what the rooms would have
 is it possible you will own this ideal home? (Why/Why not?)

SUGGESTED ANSWER
My ideal home would be at the village or countryside. It would be a
big, separate house with a big yard where I can plant and rear some
pets. There would be two floors in the house. The first floor would
have a big living room, a big kitchen, and a dining room. There
would also be a bathroom and a garage big enough for two cars that
would be connected to the house. Also, there would be a room with
games and a study room. I hope to have a room where I can work
and study. At least four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom,
would be on the second floor. My whole family would be able to eat
outside in the garden in the shade of some trees. Because I like my
privacy, there would be a tall hedge around the house and garden. I
think I will have this ideal home if I work hard. I am studying very
hard now.

You should say:

 when you started learning it
 what you have studied
 whether you have used what you have studied
 is your feeling good when you first started learning English
(Why/Why not?)

SUGGESTED ANSWER
When I was five years old, I began to learn English. My parents were
learning English at the time, and they wanted me to do the same.
Their English teacher told them not to make me learn English
against my will. They said we should use it at home so I could learn
it in a more natural way. This worked pretty well. At first, I only
learned a few words because my parents spoke English in front of
me. The most important thing was that I got a sense of the language.
Also, it was fun! We'd hang out at home and quiz each other on our
English skills by asking each other questions or making up words.
Now, I like to learn by talking with people from other countries. In
school, my results for English are among the best. In my opinion,
this is the best way to learn and I am extremely happy how it
started.

"Children's Day" is the event I want to talk about in my area. It's
just something we started doing years ago and now, we do it every

about their ideas. After each one, there was a short discussion. I
thought the programme was great, and I think they should do it

SUGGESTED ANSWER
I went to see my grandmother not too long ago. She is very old, and
she lives in a small town. I like to spend a few days with her to see
how she's doing and tell her what's going on with our family. I also
like her cooking, which is another reason why I like going to see
her. She has a small cat, and when I go to see her, I like to caress
and brush the fur. Every day, my grandmother takes a walk to the
market, but she can't walk very far now. My grandmother and I both
like to do the same thing. We really enjoy watching TV quiz shows.
Several of these shows air during the day, so that's how we spend

SUGGESTED ANSWER
The picture I'm about to talk about is one I took in Kuala Lumpur

In the middle of the picture is a big lake. On either side of the two
tall buildings, there are gardens and plants. You can also see the

tourists, and you can see them taking pictures. Others are dressed
formally and look like they work in business or an office. I took this

a lovely shade of light blue. Inside the picture is my whole family,
together with my grandparents, who had since past away. I really

SUGGESTED ANSWER
I recently decided to try yoga to relax and calm down more. One of
my friends has been doing it for a year, and she loves it. I have to
say that she does seem more calm, so maybe it works. Anyway, she
asked me to join her at a yoga class, which I really enjoyed. At first,
it was a little hard. I had trouble focusing, and some of the exercises
made me realise that I hadn't been working out enough. But I took
some more classes, and I think they helped me relax and I know
they helped me get in better shape. I've even told other friends
about it. I've also learned that yoga is becoming very popular in my

that in return, control our body and quiet our mind.

The pet store near my house is a place I go to often. I go there a lot,
but not to buy things. Instead, I go there because I work there part
time. This shop is pretty big and has a lot of animals living in it.
There aren't many dogs and cats there, but there are a lot of rabbits,
mice, hamsters, turtles and fish. The fish are my favourite because
they come in so many colours and sizes. At the pet shop, it's my job

You should say:

 what facilities there are
 where they are located
 who uses them
 is there enough sports facilities where you live? (Why/Why not?)

SUGGESTED ANSWER
Where I live, there aren't many places to play sports. A football field
is in a large park. During the holidays, it is often turned into a
common area for old folks to exercise because there is nowhere else
for them to go. There is a sports centre, but it's not in the best
shape. There is a volleyball court that can be changed into a
badminton court or an indoor tennis court. You can also play table
tennis there. Most of the time, fans of different sports use the sports
centre at different times. For example, women's volleyball is held
on Wednesday nights. I'd love to see more sports facilities, but our

You should say:

 what the problem is
 why the problem occurs
 how this problem might be solved

SUGGESTED ANSWER
In Malaysia, teenagers relationships with their parents are a very
common problem. I have this problem to some degree, but many of
my friends seem to have much worse relationships with their
parents than I do with my parents. There are many things that can
cause problems. Teenagers are often judged by what they wear,
what they do in their free time, what they study, and how they act.
Parents want what's best for their kids, so they want them to work
hard in school. But there's more to life than work and school.

secure help from others easily. In my opinion, parents and

teachers play an important role too. However, I cannot deny that

parents with more resources such as money and social

connections have a better chance of having successful children.

Set 2 : Do you think there should be some controls placed on advertising?

Certainly. These days, there are many businesses use false

advertising to sell their products and services. They make false
claims about ingredients used. Furthermore, there are some
products and services that should not be advertised, such as alcohol
and cigarettes, where children will be watching and get influenced
by them.

Set 3 : What are the advantages and disadvantages of keeping pets?

I think that one of the best things about having a pet is that it can
keep you company. Kids often want pets because they think animals
are cute. One person I know has a dog. He says that walking his dog
is a great way to meet new people because people often stop him
and ask him about it. There are, however, a few problems with
having pets. It can be expensive. The second thing that can be a
problem with some pets is that they can be loud. Also, some pets
have bad smells.

Set 4 : How can parents be role models for children?

I think there are a few ways they can do this. First, they can show
how to be polite and act in a social setting. They can also be models
in terms of education. When adults tell kids that education is
important, it means more if those adults themselves have a good
education. Third, parents can be good role models by showing their
kids how to work hard.

Set 5 : To what extend have computers improved working life?

I think the most important thing is that they help us work faster. We
can send information more quickly. We can talk to more people, for
instance if we want to tell them about a new product or service. It has
also led to more competition, since people from different countries
can now sell on foreign markets without being there in person or
sending a representative. In the past, this was almost impossible.

Set 6 : What are the qualities of a good leader?

I think a good leader should be able to get people excited about

what they are doing and show them that what they are doing is
important.A good leader is able to do this through their words and
by setting a good example. A good leader should also be fair, in my
opinion. Most people put a lot of trust in their leaders, so it's
important for them to be fair.

Set 7 : What are the purposes of education in the country?

In my opinion, the main goals are to make good citizens and

prepare people for work. Equipped with the necessary skills and
knowledge, one can able to have equal opportunity and achieve
better life in the future. Education can contribute to the
betterment of society as a whole. Besides, education creates
patriotism among the people so that everyone lives in harmony.

Set 8 : How is the government educating people about the environment?

The government can use TV and radio programmes to create

awareness on the environment. Besides, students in school should
learn more about ways to preserve the environment and the topic of
the environment should come up on school tests more often. From
time to time, the government should organise campaigns and fund
organisations who take the initiatives to clean the environment.
Besides, the government should put emphasis on clean energy
development and recycling projects.

Set 9 : Why do some people choose to make friends on the Internet?

They might be a little nervous about meeting people in person. But I

think one of the main reasons is that they can meet more kinds of
people online. Many websites focus on a certain area of interest or
have places where people who like the same things can get to know
each other. One of the problems is that the people you meet on the
Internet could be very far away from you, so the opportunities to
meet in person are often limited.

Set 10 : Why do many people want to study abroad?

I think that getting qualifications is the main reason. This is

especially true for students from countries with less money and less
education. They think that going to school abroad, especially in an
English-speaking country, will help them get a better job and move
up faster in their own country. They also want to be able to become
citizens of the country where they study.

Set 11 : Should children be encouraged to play team or individual sports?

They should be encouraged to play both, in my opinion. Some

people think that kids should be encouraged to play team sports so
they can learn how to work with others. This argument doesn't make
sense to me. I mean, there are many ways for kids to learn to work
with others besides sports. On the other hand, if some children are
good in playing individual sports like badminton or squash, go ahead.

Set : How does the government help the poorest members of society, the
B ?

What I know is the government tries to help the poor in many

different ways. First, they provide financial help, especially those
meeting the B poverty line. The government also gives free food
to schooling children from those families under B . During times of
disaster such as flash flood, the government helps the affected with
cash assistance. What I am impressed about Malaysia is that medical
expenses at government clinics and hospitals are free or at very
minimum.

Set : Do you think it is important to study history?

Yes, of course I do. I think that a lot of things that have happened in
history happen over and over again. Even though the places and
people are different, the order in which things happen is often very
similar. History will help us to be more patriotic and recognise the
sacrifice of our leaders. In short, I think all kids should learn history
in school, but I wouldn't make it a required subject like English and
math.

Set 14 : Do you think it is necessary for schools to teach foreign languages?

Yes, I do. I don't think all students in my country need to learn

foreign languages, but I think all schools should give them the
chance to do so. The main reason is that learning a foreign
language can help me at work. Besides, it will help me when I want
to travel to other foreign countries later. Learning will be much
easier and our learning horizon will be wider if we know many
languages.

Set 15 : Which form of media do you think is the most trustworthy?

I think the most reliable source is the newspaper. Journalists are

usually very good at looking into important stories, and they
seem to have a lot of good sources. They have their own ethics to
publish only the truth and will not spread rumours unnecessarily.
TV is also a good source of information.

Set 16 : How can schools help teenagers to be more responsible?

In Malaysia, many schools have started programmes where

students go out into the community to help people like the elderly
and sick. I think these kinds of projects are a great idea and really
help teens learn to be more responsible. At my school, a lot of
teenagers were against the idea at first, but now almost all of
them are in favour of it. When they like these programmes,
automatically, they will be responsible towards themselves,
family and the society.

Set 17 : Do you think parents should control what their children watch on TV?

I agree, but to some extent. I think that parents should pay close
attention to what and how much their young children watch on TV.
It's fine if a kid watches cartoons for an hour a day. However, the
child shouldn't just sit at home and watch cartoons. He or she should
also go out with friends, get some exercise, and make new friends. I
think that parental control should be in place for older children too,
especially those in the secondary school. Nowadays, there are a lot
of violence and sex-related movies on internet that may be harmful
for their development.
