    Reproductive Hormones and Their Functions

    Reproductive hormones are chemical substances that initiate sexual


    development essential for human reproduction. The start of sexual maturity
    happens during puberty stage and it is determined by the amount of
    reproductive hormones released in the brain. The level of these reproductive
    hormones increases relatively as we reach puberty.

    Below is the list of reproductive hormones and their corresponding


    functions.

    1. Reproductive Hormone: Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH)


    Secreted by: Hypothalamus
    Function: Stimulates the pituitary gland to release Follicle
    Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone
    (LH).
    2. Reproductive Hormone: Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
    Secreted by: Pituitary Gland
    Function: • Follicle stimulators of the ovaries and testes to begin
    the production of egg cells and sperm cells.
    • Stimulates the synthesis of sex steroid hormones
    (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone).

    3. Reproductive Hormone: Luteinizing Hormone (LH)


    Secreted by: Pituitary Gland
    Function: Aids the FSH to hasten the maturity of egg cells and
    sperm cells by producing more estrogen and testosterone.
    4. Reproductive Hormone: Testosterone (Sex Steroid Hormone)
    Secreted by: Testes/ Adrenal Gland
    Function: • Increases sperm cell production and maturity.
    • Facilitates development of male primary and secondary
    sex characteristics such as deepening of voice as vocal
    chords thicken, lengthen, and mature; and testicle
    enlargement due to the increased production and
    maturity of sperm cells.
    Secreted by: Ovaries
    Function: Maintains healthy reproductive tissues.

    5. Reproductive Hormone: Estrogen (Sex Steroid Hormones)
    Secreted by: Ovaries
    Function: • Stimulates the maturity of egg cells
    • Responsible for the development of primary female
    secondary sex characteristics such as breast development
    where fats are collected in the breast’s connective tissues
    causing it to enlarge.
    • Thickens the uterine lining during ovulation.
    Secreted by: Adrenal Gland
    Function: Aids in the maturity of sperm cells
    6. Reproductive Hormone: Progesterone (Sex Steroid Hormone)
    Secreted by: Ovaries
    Function: Aids estrogen in the thickening of the uterine lining.

    Secreted by: Testes


    Function: Stimulates the production of testosterone.
