Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION..
Due to limited material recourses and higher
demands at the same time, fracture Assessment
codes are constantly being modified to reduce the
level of conservatism. One of the parameters that
received much attention in this context is plastic
constraint. Constraint can influence the load
bearing capacity of cracked components
considerably It has long been known that low
constraint components, which show considerable
Plasticity prior to fracture, can endure higher
loads.

Conversely, high constraint Components, with

limited plasticity before fracture, tend to fail at
lower loads [2].

The Standard test procedures, therefore, are

designed to provide the highest constraint
Conditions which ensures the specimens to break
at the lowest load (e.g. [3]).
Such Procedures are believed to give the
most conservative value for the fracture
toughness Of a material. Most studies on
constraint effect have been focused on the low
constraint Conditions to quantify the actual
elevated fracture load compared with the
standard test Value in order to eliminate, or at
least reduce, the level of conservatism .

Chapter 2
EXPERIMENTS
Constraint effect is mostly observed and studied
at the ductile to brittle transition zone Where the
governing mechanism of fracture is brittle with
some degree of plasticity Although constraint
effect in cleavage fracture is more prominent,
ductile fracture ls also affected by the level of
constraint ]. The focus of this paper is on the
ductile Fracture. The test material is Al2024-T361
with void nucleation, growth, coalescence Ductile
fracture mechanism. The advantage of using a
ductile material is its low level of Fracture data
scatter [which enabled us to carry out less tests
and therefore reduce.

• Critical J-integral much less than the

standard fracture toughness values were
calculated.
• Stress triaxility factor can be used to
quantify in-plane or out-of-plane constraints,
but not when both change simultaneously.
• Modified Anderson-Dodds measure of
constraint can be sued to relate Page no 3
experimental data with any level in-plane and
out-ofplane constraints.
• Transgranular fracture regions were
observed in Aluminium 2024 at room
temperature in very highly constraint
specimens.

properties of Al2024-T361 are reportedIn
Table 1 from earlier studies Experiments were
performed in three different orientations relative
to

the rolling Direction namely longitudinal,

transverse and short transverse. It was, therefore,
Imperceptive to examine the isotropy of the
material. Compression tests were carried

Out in the three orientations to measure the

elastic moduli and yield stresses In order to
measure the fracture toughness of the material
two fatigue precracked SEN(B) tests in the TL
orientation [3] were performed. Figure 2 shows
the schematic Of the specimen with length 2
100mmL = thickness t = 30mm and width W =
30mm. An electrical discharge machined (EDM)
slot was introduced in each specimen Followed by
2 mm fatigue crack.
The final crack length (EDM slot plus fatigue
crack)
