6e Le verbe BE

To BE est à la fois un verbe à part entière, qui signifie être, et à la fois un opérateur (comme DO au
présent simple) qui permet de former le présent en BE+-ING.

Formation de BE

Be au présent

Utilisation de BE

BE comme verbe
Le verbe BE est utilisé pour parler de soi, de sa personnalité, de sa vie…

Ex : My name is Anna. I am 12. I am from Australia.


As-tu remarqué que contrairement au français, on utilise BE pour donner son âge ?

Les formes Was/Were sont utilisées pour parler de sa naissance.


Ex : I was born in New York but my brothers were born in Alaska.

Il est important de repérer les indices temporels qui permettront de choisir le temps à utiliser.
Passé Last year (=l’an dernier),
Yesterday (=hier), …he was in London.

Présent Today (=aujourd’hui),


This year (=Cette année), …he is in 4th grade.

BE comme opérateur
L’opérateur BE est utilisé pour former des temps tel que le présent en BE-+ING comme nous le
verrons lors d’une prochaine leçon.

Ex : My mother is working today.

Il sert également à questionner et à répondre sur l’identité, la description ou l’emplacement d’une


personne ou d’une chose.
Ex : Are you English ? Yes I am / No I am not
Is your dad tall ? Yes he is / No, he isn’t.
Was yesterday Monday ? Yes, it was / No, it wasn’t.
As-tu remarqué que contrairement au français, les anglais ne répondent pas simplement par Oui ou par Non ? Ils se
servent du sujet et de l’opérateur de la question pour compléter leur réponse.
