Hydraulic Construction 1 – Exercises Set 1

1-

2- A hydraulic jump occurs in a rectangular channel 4.0m wide. The water depth before
the jump is 0.4m and after the jump is 1.7m. Compute the flow rate in the channel, the
critical depth and the headloss in the jump.

3 -Water flowing in a wide channel encounters a 22cm high bump at the bottom of the
channel. If the flow depth is 1.2m and the velocity is 2.5m.s before the bump, determine
if the flow is choked over the bump and discuss.

4- Water at 10degrees C flows in a 6m wide rectangular channel at a depth of 0.55m and

a flow rate of 12m3/s. Determine a) the critical depth b) the flow is subcritical or
supercritical c) the alternate depth

5- After heavy rain, water flows on a concrete surface at an average velocity of 1.3m/s.
If the water depth is 2cm, determine wheter the flow is subcritical or supercritical.

6- Water flowing through a sluice gate undergoes a hydraulic jump. The velocity of the
water is 1.25m/s before reaching the gate and 4m/s after reaching the jump. Determine
the flow rate through the gate per meter of width, the flow depths y1 and y2 and the
energy dissipation ration of the bump.

7- The flow velocity and the flow depth in a 5m wide rectangular channel are 1.5m/s and
4m respectively. Design a converging transition so that the flow is critical in the
transition. Assume the channel bottom to be horizontal, and losses in the transition to be
negligible.

8- A 4-m wide rectangular channel is carrying 10 m3/s at a depth of 2.5 m. There is a

step rise of 0.2 m in the channel bottom. Assuming there are no losses at the transition,
determine the flow depth downstream of the bottom step. Does the water surface rise or
fall at the step?

9- A 10-m wide rectangular channel is carrying a discharge of 200 m3/s at

a flow depth of 5 m.
i. If the channel bottom has a sudden rise of 0.3 m, determine the depth of
flow downstream of the step. Does the water surface rise or drop at the
step?
ii. Compute the flow depth and the water surface level downstream of the
bottom step if the step is a drop of 0.2 m.
In both cases, assume that there are no losses at the bottom step.

10- A hydraulic jump is formed in a 4-m wide outlet just downstream of the control gate,
which is located at the upstream end of the outlet. The flow depth upstream of the gate is
20 m. If the outlet discharge is 100 m3/s,
determine i. Flow depth downstream of the jump; ii. Thrust on the gate; and iii. Energy
losses in the jump.
Assume there are no losses in the flow through the gate.

11- A 8-m wide rectangular channel is carrying a flow of 54 m3/s at a flow depth of 0.6
m. A sluice gate located at the downstream end of the channel controls the flow depth
y2. Determine y2 so that a hydraulic jump is formed
upstream of the gate.

12- A 50-m wide rectangular channel is carrying a flow of 250 m3/s at a flow depth of 5
m. To produce critical flow in this channel, determine: i. The height of the step in the
channel bottom if the width remains constant
ii. The reduction in the channel width if the channel-bottom level remains unchanged
iii. A combination of the width reduction and the bottom step.

13- A 50-m wide rectangular channel is carrying a flow of 250 m3/s at a flow depth of 5
m. To produce critical flow in this channel, determine:
i. The height of the step in the channel bottom if the width remains constant
ii. The reduction in the channel width if the channel-bottom level remains
unchanged
iii. A combination of the width reduction and the bottom step.

14- The reservoir level upstream of a 30-m wide spillway for a flow of 800 m3/s is at El.
200 m. The downstream river level for this flow is at El. 100 m. Determine the invert
level of a stilling basin having the same width as the spillway so that a hydraulic jump is
formed in the basin. Assume the losses in the spillway are negligible.
