PROCEDURE:
Element of
Suggested Activities
the Plan
Awareness  Have you tried preparing milk using cold water?
 What have you noticed to the milk?
 How about if you will use hot water?

Activity  Pupils are grouped.

 Each group is given a piece of paper where instructions about the activity are
written.
(Please see activity sheet attached)
Analysis Set A
 Which sugar dissolves first, in Cup A (cold water) or in Cup B (hot water)? Why?
 What factor affecting solubility of a substance is being shown here?
Set B
 Which soap powder dissolves first, in Cup A or in Cup B? Why?
 What factor affecting solubility of a substance is being shown here?
Set C
 Given the same quality of water, quantity of salt but of different types, and the same
manner of stirring, which salt dissolves first, the rock salt or iodized salt? Why?
 What factor affecting solubility of a substance is being shown here?
Set D
 . In Set D, both cups are being poured with 1 spoonful of rock salt and same volume
of water, which cup where rock salt dissolves first, in Cup A or in Cup B? Why?
 What factor affecting solubility of a substance is being shown here?

Abstraction  What are the different factors affecting the solubility of a mixture? Describe each.

Application  5 envelopes are being posted by the teacher on the board.

 Inside each envelope is a setup of mixing mixtures which they are going to identify
the factor that affects the solubility of the substance.
 Selected pupils are called to get one and then read the set up in front of the class and
then identify the factor being tested in the set up.
Assessment Discuss briefly each factor that affects the solubility of a substance.
 Nature of solute
 Amount of solute
 Size of solute
 Temperature of solvent
 Manner of stirring

Assignment Give one example situation of each of the following factor that affects solubility of a
substance. Write your answer on your Science notebook.
 Nature of solute
 Amount of solute
 Size of solute
 Temperature of solvent
 Manner of stirring

ACTIVITY SHEET
Factors Affecting Solubility of a Substance
Problem: What are the factors that affect the solubility of a substance?

Materials:
Sugar, flour, soap powder, iodized salt, rock salt, hot water, cold water, cups,
graduated cylinder
Procedure:

1. Prepare all the materials needed for the activity.

2. Follow the following instructions properly and carefully.
Set A – 1. Get one spoonful of sugar and a glass of cold water. Mark the two cups with A and B. Cup
A
is filled with cold water while Cup B is hot water.
2. Put 200 mL of cold water into Cup A while hot water in Cup B.
2. Simultaneously pour the spoonful of sugar into Cup A and Cup B.
3. Stir the mixture and record the time elapsed from the start of stirring until the solute
completely dissolves. Stirring must be of the same speed.
Set B – 1. Get 2 cups and mark it with A and B.
2. Put 200 mL of water into Cup A and Cup B.
3. Pour 1 spoonful of soap powder into Cup A and 2 spoonful of soap powder into Cup B,
simultaneously.
4. Stir both mixture simultaneously with the same speed, direction and manner. Record the
time
elapsed until the soap powder get dissolves in both cups.
Set C – 1. Get 2 cups and mark it with A and B.
2. Put 200 mL of water into Cup A and Cup B.
3. Simultaneously, pour 1 spoon of rock salt into Cup A and 1 spoon of iodized salt into Cup
B.
4. Stir both mixture simultaneously with the same speed, direction and manner. Record the
time
elapsed until the salt in both cups dissolves.
Set D – 1. Get 2 cups and mark it with A and B.
2. Put 200 mL of water into Cup A and Cup B.
3. Pour 1 spoon of rock salt in both Cup A and B.
4. Stir Cup A slowly while in Cup B, stir it fast in 1 minute.
5. Observe what happens.

Observations:

1. Based on your observations on the experiment conducted, fill out the table below.
