GD & T
Datum: A reference feature used to establish a
coordinate system for measurement and
tolerance.
Feature Control Frame (FCF): A GD&T symbol
that conveys information about the tolerances
and geometric characteristics of a feature.
True Position: The exact location of a feature
relative to a specified datum, defined by a
positional tolerance.
Flatness: Describes the allowable variation in the
flatness of a surface.
Circularity: Specifies the allowable roundness
deviation of a circular feature.
Cylindricity: Defines the allowable variation in the
form of a cylindrical feature.
Profile of a Line: Governs the form, size, and
orientation of a line element on a part.
Profile of a Surface: Controls the shape and
orientation of a surface within a specified
tolerance zone.
Concentricity: Ensures that two features share a
common axis.
Symmetry: Requires that a feature is
symmetrically disposed about a datum plane or
axis.
Parallelism: Specifies the allowable deviation in
parallel alignment between two surfaces or
features.
Perpendicularity: Ensures that a surface or feature
is at a right angle to a datum.
Positional Tolerance: Establishes the allowable
variation in the location of a feature relative to a
datum.
Runout: Defines the allowable movement of a
feature along its axis of rotation.
Form Tolerance: Governs the shape of a feature,
including straightness, roundness, and flatness.
Datum Feature Simulator: A theoretical
representation used for inspection and
measurement.
Basic Dimension: A theoretically exact dimension
used for reference in GD&T.
Material Condition Modifier (MMC): Adjusts the
tolerance of a feature based on its actual size in
the part's worst-case condition.
Maximum Material Condition (MMC): The
condition of a feature where it contains the
maximum amount of material within the stated
limits.
Least Material Condition (LMC): The condition of a
feature where it contains the least amount of
material within the stated limits.
Virtual Condition: The theoretically exact
location of a feature's axis or center plane.
Tangent Plane: A plane that touches a curved
surface at a single point.
Zero Position: A special case of true position
where the feature must be in the exact
location specified.
Projected Tolerance Zone: The portion of a
tolerance zone that is projected onto a
specified plane.
Bonus Tolerance: Additional tolerance
allowed in certain situations, such as when
applying MMC.
Angularity: Controls the orientation of a
feature relative to a datum plane or axis.
Tolerance Zone: The total allowable variation
in size, form, or location.
MMC Modifiers (Regardless of Feature Size -
RFS): Tolerance modifiers that ignore the
material condition of the feature.
Feature of Size: Any feature that is subject to
size control, such as holes or shafts.
Datum Target: A specified point, line, or area
on a feature used as a datum for positioning.
Projected Tolerance Zone (Straightness): The
tolerance zone projected onto a specified axis.
Datum Reference Frame: A set of datums that
define the coordinate system for inspection.
Datum Feature Simulator: A feature used to
represent a datum feature when establishing a
datum reference frame.
True Profile: The boundary within which the
entire surface must lie.
Perpendicularity Tolerance Zone: The space
within which the perpendicularity tolerance is
applied.
Cylindrical Zone: The three-dimensional space
within which cylindrical tolerances apply.
Datum Feature Hierarchy: The order in which
datum features are established in a datum
reference frame.
Simultaneous Requirement: The condition
where multiple geometric tolerances apply
simultaneously.
Projected Tolerance Zone (Parallelism): The
space within which the parallelism tolerance is
applied.
Composite Tolerance: A single tolerance that
combines multiple geometric controls.
Circular Runout: Controls the circular movement of
a feature relative to a datum axis.
Flatness Tolerance Zone: The area within which a
flat surface must lie to meet the specified tolerance.
Unequally Disposed Profile Tolerance: Specifies
varying profile tolerances for different portions of a
feature.
Datum Shift: A shift in the coordinate system to
accommodate specific manufacturing or inspection
needs.
Multiple Single Segment Profile: Profile tolerance
applied to multiple non-connected segments on a
feature.
Inclined Plane: A plane at an angle to the datum
reference frame, controlled by angularity tolerance.
Over All Length (OAL): The total length of a feature,
including any projections or extensions.
Datum Feature Simulator (Projected Tolerance
Zone): Theoretical representation projecting a
tolerance zone onto a plane.
Circular Datum: A datum feature defined by a
circular shape, often used in conjunction with
cylindrical features.
Profile of a Line (Free State): The profile tolerance
applies when the feature is in its free or
unrestrained state.
